Desktop Icon Position/Restore (32-bit And 64-bit Versions)
May 26, 2008
All free stuff (not necessarily 64-bit, but I have found them flawless with vista x64 and I'm sure most of you probably know these already)
- "Transparent" Tools -
- Desktop Icon Position/Restore (32-bit and 64-bit versions) Restore your icon layout after updating your display driver, etc.
- ClipBoardPath (32-Bit) As far as I'm concerned, this is much better than the default in vista. I use a lot of design programs and I need the file paths from inside viewers such as acdsee and this desplays nicely, whereas the default vista one can't be accessed.......
i did was reboot my pc(vista ultimate 32bit) and my desktop icons looked like this.(see image). I posted this problem on 2 other forums and no luck yet. System restore don't work. afe mode don't work. Rebuilding icon cache don't work.
BTW - My system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit NVIDIA was randomly changing the placement of my desktop icons. UNTIL, I updated the drivers to 191.07. After that, the desktop stabilized and I didn't have an issue. NOTE: My version of NVIDIA is 8500 GT/9200 (not sure why it has two?) I just updated the drivers today to 197.13 and sure enough . . . during installation, it took my desktop icons, rearranged them, and shoved them all to the left. I cannot tell you how irritating this is to me.
I have read some of the other threads and the general concensus then, was that there is no way to lock the desktop. Has anyone found a way to either lock the desktop or resolve this issue? I assume I'm not alone in this. Course the "easy" fix would be to just restore back to the earlier drivers, but . . . I'm thinking that it's really best to have the most up-to-date ones - yes??
I really need some software like this. I used one on XP but it does not work in Vista. The icons are wildely dancing around my desktop every time I do something with the sidebar or switch from the full screen game. Change resolution or such and It is really annoying They often even get under the sidebar so I cannot use them...
In Windows Vista Inside Out chapter 7 section "Restoring Files and Folders with Previous Versions" it states, "To see what previous versions are available for a file or folder, right-click the item in Windows Explorer and choose Restore Previous Versions." When I right-click a file or folder (with frequent changes over time) in Windows Explorer, I can't find anything labelled "Restore Previous Versions".
I have "Show hidden files and folders" checked and "Hide protected operating system files" unchecked in Folder Options, and I opened Windows Explorer using "Run as Administrator". How do I get to see the "Restore Previous Versions" menu item?
I was working on the computer today using several programs and when I went back to the desktop, I noticed a sort of ghosted out icon that looks like a gear on top of a sheet of lined paper and the words "desktop.ini" under it. I have no idea how it got there. Is it safe for me to delete it or is there a better way of getting rid of it.
I am not certain, but I suspect either Vongo or Spybot2009 was responsible for one icon-(minimize all windows) disappearance from Quick launch at taskbar. Now I have to right click taskbar for "show the desktop" option to minimize all windows. Thanks God the "switch between windows" icon stayed put.
My desktop icons are not working correctly the applications are working fine but the icons are all the same attached is a jpeg of what it looks like as it is hard to explain the problem.
I accidentally deleted my desktop file and it asked me something about duplication. My fingers moved to fast and i agreed. Now I have two of the same icons on my desktop. When I try to delete one of the icons, either they will both go away or one will stay there and not work. Sometimes I can get it to only have 1 icons but once I install a new program, it will double the icons again. I added a desktop file again to "user" file and there is also a "Public Desktop" in the public file. This is very annoying and I would like to be able to put icons on my desktop without the duplication. How do I fix this? This situation is really hard to explain so I hope someone will have an idea of how to fix it besides reinstalling windows.
I didn't really want to start a new thread, but I'm too busy to look through to find a matching problem. I can't get an Icon to delete off of my desktop. The account is a standard account, so when I try to delete the icon, it asks for permission. So I type in the password and it says it deletes it, but it's still there. So I try to delete it from the Administrator account(which is the built in account), but it says I don't have permission to delete it. It's not a big problem, but it's just somewhat annoying.
everytime i try to zip a file now, it gets zipped but the icon when saved to desktop comes up as clear with the file inside, i no longer see it as a folder with a zip going from top to bottom, any clues?
Since installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
Since i got a toshiba laptop, vista, all my pdf files i scan and save to my desktop are actual small pictures of the scanned document. If i right click/properties/ adobe acrobat document showing to open with adobe acrobat 8.1. it is updated to 8.1.2. They do open in adobe reader just fine. All other desktop icons working fine. how do i get adobe icon to show instead of scanned document? With my previous HP Vista laptop, didn't have this problem?
I recently installed a game in Vista x64. It's an older game, but runs fine. Only problem is the desktop icon has the damn UAC shield and it pesters me to allow it to run every time. I trust this app, so I want it to just run. Is there a setting for the app to make it not bug me for UAC every time I run it?
From time to time my Vista Ultimate will crash, usually when installing some software. I reboot and everything is OK -- except for my desktop icons: desktop icons are all messed up. Is there a way/method of locking down the icons on my desktop without losing the ability to create new ones?
I have an icon on my desktop which refuses to get deleted. I have gone looked at various other posts and have tried to follow the steps..unfortunately none of them have helped me get rid of the sticky icon. the file name is RATATO~1.rm and i dont know how it was created.
* deleting in safe mode doesnt help. * tried shedding the file wid mcafee...doesnt work. * deleting from cmd prompt doesnt delete. * have tried to remove the registry entry, there are various entries and am not able to figure out the exact entry.
When i try to delete, the delete program goes into an infinite loop. says " recycling 1 item..calculating time remaining" and gets stuck.
I have a problem with a programs icon i am using. I dont know if anyone is firmilair with network magic but they have an icon that is undeleteable from the right click button on my mouse. Is there any other way?
I have an old icon on my desktop that I think I have done everything possible to remove but I can't seem to get it to go away. It is a "Network Magic" icon left over from some stuff that got installed with an earlier wireless modem. Everything associated with the modem has been removed from the computer. There is nothing associated with this icon ...it is just there on the desktop and annoying.
I have tried to delete an icon from the desktop but it keeps saying: "This is no longer located in C:usersamedesktop Verify the item's location and try again" I deleted it in Exporer from the desktop folder. The icon stayed on the desktop.
For some reason the Documents folder has reverted to having a plain icon and has lost the special green documents icon. How can I restore its icon to its former glory? Other special folders are unaffected.
I have sent internet explorer from the start menu to my desktop, I also created a toolbar on my system tray as desktop, when I open the toolbar, it shows 2 internet explorer icons. I delete the desktop icon, but in the toolbar, internet explorer is still there? what can I do?,because I want internet explorer on my desktop.
I installed Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended Trial version. As soon as the install finished I noticed that every single one of my desktop shortcut icons now have another icon overlaid in front of them. It's the white square icon you get when your shortcut is not linked to it's program. But my shortcuts are linked and work. Everything's normal about them except for this overlay.
It even appears in front of new shortcuts I create.
Uninstalling the Adobe program did not get rid of them.
Does any one know how to get rid of these overlays...?
sent laptop to service center for warrenty repair to cover. repair center updated the bios (bios launcher downloaded to desktop). when i got machine home i noticed an adminstrative tools icon now on my desktop. i am unable to do anything with this icon. when right clicked i get no option to delete or to open properities. i have tried dragging and dropping, moving, and deleting. i cannot move it off the desktop. control pannel still has the administrative icon in it and it works. the icon on the desktop works also. hovvever desktop is no place for admin. tools. i have also tried to delete from safe mode without any success.
I understood this question might have asked hundreds of time. I searching from last two hours but couldn?t find my right answer. I was able to change all default icon of desktop except internet explorer. C:Program FilesInternet Exploreriexplore.exe
