Deleting Files In Root Of C:
Dec 13, 2009
Am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit all current updates. In the root directory, C:, I find the files 0X0409.ini , 1033.mst, realtek.log RHDSetup.log, and unistall.bat Are these of any importance or can I delete them without harm?

How can I be certain that a few files that I want permanently deleted cannot be recovered by someone at a later date. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium and I recently did a full hard disc recovery, reinstalling all the applications of Microsoft Office. However, I read somewhere yesterday that some files may still be recoverable by knowledgeable searchers. I had some files that I never want to see again and I do not want anyone else to see them either.

I recently had to reformat my computer, but saved basically all of my old computer in the folder windows.old before doing so. Now that I wiped my drive and reinstalled vista, I want to get rid of that windows.old folder because it is huge and I don't use it anymore, but I can't get clearance to delete or move it to an external hard drive.

I recently deleted some 2,000+ files from my WindowsTemp folder. I remember - back in my Windows 2000 days - I set up a batch file that executed on boot-up from the Start-up folder that deleted such files. What would the equivalent procedure be for Vista Home Premium (64-bit)? Am I able to duplicate that former procedure? Are there other temp files that are created that I should be aware of for deleting purposes?

I recently backed up my files to the Recovery D drive (Back up and Restore center). It failed as I did not have enough memory to complete the op. I've since uninstalled programs that I do not normall use, but still only have 20MB free out of the 10GB drive. I'm trying to go into the user files to delete folders which contain pictures that I want to delete to free up room. BUt when I click on the folder and try to delete it, I get an error message indicating that I do not have enough memory to complete the operation. So how do I delete these folders (that contain a ton of pics)?

I am the only user on my computer and am an administrator obviously. I am trying to delete some *.gdp files that a software did not remove when uninstalled. It says I need permission. FROM WHO? How do I rid myself of these files and is it possible for VISTA to be set so it recognizes that I am the only one on the planet actually with the permission to do anything on this stupid OS?

My C drive shows 2.98 GB free. I have deleted tons of programs and files, and it remains at 2.98 GB free. I'm also getting messages that my D: partition is full (I have never messed with it, so ???). Have run chkdsk /f, ran the dell repair utility that took all day yesterday, said everything was fine. Tried to reinstall Vista from the DVD and got a message that I need 7 GB of free space, so it aborts.
You can hopefully see my problem, i.e., not enough space to reinstall Vista, but can't get the space I need no matter what I do. Have run disk cleaner and everything else, too. Hibernation is not turned on. System restore is not turned on. My c drive is 288 GB on a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop with 4 GB of ram. Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

I have a file that I tried to delete. When attempting to delete, I receive a message saying the file name is to large. I moved the file to the recycle bin and ran the free up disk space and received the same message. I also tried to rename the file...no can do.

-> I started Deleting Files and cleaning space, yet my drive shows I'm -> losing space?? What is going on? Are you cleaning your temporary internet files, cookies and browser cache when you do you hard drive cleanup? You also might want to check and make sure that you uninstall software that you are sure you are no longer using.

Windows Vista has loads of new backup features such as previous versions of your documents and system state points that are part of System Restore. All of these features are turned on by default and offer you a great deal of backup protection. However, you pay a big price in disk space. Every once in a while when your system is stable and you need to free up some disk space, it is a good idea to clear all of these previous versions of your files and System Restore points from your computer. This is a very easy way to free up a few gigabytes of space across all of your hard drives.
To get started, just follow these steps: ...

I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64, and it came with 2 set of program files: program files, and program files x86. Since my hard drive is only 100 gigs, I was wondering if I could delete the normal program files and keep the x86 ones, or would that cause problems?

I just bought a new 4-port USB hub after my old one had stopped working for some reason, and I can't plug in more than 1 device at a time. My old one also had 4 ports and I could use my 2GB USB drive and my wireless mouse at the same time without any problems. With my new hub, If I have my mouse plugged in and then plug in my USB drive, my mouse stops working (as if I have pulled the receiver out - the 'safely remove hardware icon disappears) and my USB doesn't even connect. Then If I remove either one, the other one which is still plugged in will connect again.
I've also had the same problem if I try any combination with my external hard drive. My external HD has its own power source and has the same problem. I can't say though, whether my old hub worked with either my mouse or USB stick, because I didn't have an external back then.
I've tried opening Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and looking around in the USB section for the power being supplied to the ports, but it only shows 98 mA for my mouse. And what I don't understand is, even when I run this program without the hub plugged in, it'll show 5 listings for 'USB Root Hub'. Now my laptop has 4 usb ports and an integrated webcam, and the options for the 5th listing says my camera's name along with 500 mA, even though I'm not even using it. And when I plug the hub in, it doesn't show any new entries, and the properties for my mouse show up under the previous 'USB Root Hub' entries.
Does this have to do with my hub not being able to support more than 1 device at a time, or is this a power supply problem? (power supply as in the power that's being supplied to my USB ports, not PSU). And if I haven't mentioned already, both my old and new hubs do not have an external power source, the just have a USB connection.

Vista 64-bit, New to vista (from xp). Been working with vista for about a week trying to get things going after transferring files from xp. Up until just moments ago, I could have sworn that documents & settings existed on the c root. Here's what happened. I needed to find some files and worked in Folder Options to unselect hide extensions and hide protected operating system files. I got an alert that this may cause a problem, but ignored it (as this operation was recommended by a trusted source). So, after do all this, I noted that D/S and several other folders were now shortcuts. When clicking on these short cuts, I got access denied. I then did a restore to an earlier date and when I went back to the c root, d/s and the other noted short cuts had disappeared. BTW, I ahve undone what I did in Folder Options, but to no avail. Also, I have seen post that say one doesn't need D/S. I find all this very confusing as I had these folders and now I don't.

Several weeks ago UAC started blocking access to my root drive. Not sure if it occured after an update or not. I have restored to about 2 months earlier but the problem persists. Tried TweakUAC but no change. I'm not sure modifying the Regestry is the way to go. Hate to have to reinstal and start over.

I have McAfee SiteAdvisor on my pc and have a technical issue When I click on "are you the owner of this site?" it gives me the option to create a "Request Verification File" which I have done. It has my website url together with a code Now it says: Create a file with this exact filename in the root Web directory on the Web server of the site you are claiming to own. How do I do this? What do I have to do so McAfee knows it is my site?

Just as earlier post says...I too have, in just the past 2 days, begun to have something wacky going on with my Windows Mail. When I open, it receives and posts mesages in the appropriate folders so it is downloading the mesages and the count of how many in each folder. BUT, then the problems start...Sometimes, if I open the email and read it, then move to another folder with mail it deletes the emails just read in the first folder. Other times, it will delete the mail in one particular folder just as I click to open it and read them. I have already gone through and checked View---> Current View---Show All.
I have also watched carefully at the top right corner of my email and each of the 3 folders is marked "Show all Mesages". Nothing is marked to be "Hidden". I have also checked and re-checked the three message rules. The deleted mails are nowhere else to be found. It's now to the point where I may not even get to read them once deposited in the folder of my mailbox. One folder in particular is having the most problems.

Whilst doing the extraction process vista is deleting the setup.exe but not the other files in the zipped file. I have successfully done this on at least 5 other vista machine and have not had this issue before. He is logged in on the only account according to him which is the admin account. How can we overcome this security flaw?

I am hoping to find an automated method for deleting the Vista Search Folders. I tried command line scripts to remove the folder (RMDIR or DELTREE), but I'm not having any luck with the search folders. I am able to delete other folders with a script (like this one): Del C:Myfolder*.*.* RMDir C:Myfolder But I cannot delete a Vista Search
Folders like this folder; C:UsersmynameSearchesEverywhere I can delete them manually, but not with a script.
