Defragment Query, Should Run The Defragment Tool Regularly
Sep 13, 2009
Last night I defragged my HD using Auslogics defrag program. I've just turned on my PC and checked how much free space I now have and I've gone from having 54.2gb free space on one partition of the HD to 51.3gb after the defrag. How can this be? Surely there should be more empty clusters/free space on my HD now than was before? Would it best for me to run the defrag tool a few more times? This is the first time I've actually defragged the HD since getting this PC 2 years ago. I now know I should run the defrag tool more regularly.
Windows' built-in defragmenter has not been doing too well. Tried running Defraggler http://www.piriform.com/defraggler This is working much better and gives a graphical window with the progress. What I see is that C:pagefile.sys is hugely fragmented (1.5G and 500 fragments). This file seems to not to be able to be defragmented. Sort of makes sense since it is an important system file. Is there a way to get the pagefile to defragment?
which has a boot mode operation that can be enabled to defrag system files before they are locked. This does not seem to be working properly. It does not seem to be doing anything with the pagefile (even though it is in the explicit file list). Perhaps I have not found the correct command line switches yet. Both Defraggler and UltraDefrag were recommended by Kim Komando in her newsletter
I thought I had asked this before but upon searching I found that I did'nt and could not find anyone else posting about this, so here I go again. I like using Auslogics Defrag, but its taking an absolute eternity to defrag, I tend to defrag after every install of a game and I installed another game this afternoon and its still defragging now, is this normal?? does'nt feel like it
My only thought is and I'm just guessing that would it be at all down to the fact that I have disabled index searching, or even the system restore being on? I'm annoyed at the fact that its taken almost all afternoon to defrag and counting
I cannot defrag. or restore. The Dell tech. said that he found a few files which cannot be repaired by SFC/Scannow. I told him I probably needed to take it into a PC shop, as he wanted me to reinstall Vista and I don't think I can do that. He said to tell the shop to perform CHKDSK/R. Is this something I can do at home, find and delete corrupt files, without uninstalling and reinstalling Vista? I just used defrag.
Vista home premium SP2. In XP the disk defrag pushes CPU close to 100% and takes a few minutes to sort out the disk. My Vista defrag seems to get bored with defragging and goes to sleep. It does the following
* displays Analysing... * Puts focus on button Defrag Now Select the button Select C: and deselected D: (a small partition) Select Continue * Button becomes Cancel Defrag * displays Defraging hard disk CPU rises to 75%+ for a few minutes and then falls to
I recently upgraded my Norton's Internet Security to Norton 360 - which contains a disk optimizer (defrag). Prior to upgrading Norton my Vista Defrag tool worked fine no problem and always on schedule. After the upgrade to Norton, I was setting up the program and the defrag tool in Norton said "pending" which I left alone, because I was comfortable using the native defrag utility. However, now the vista defrag does not work. I went into the the vista tool to look at the schedule and it gave the last run date ( I had it set to weekly on Wed at 1am).
The next scheduled defrag said "Never" despite the box checked "run automatically". I then unchecked the box and rechecked it, and then it gave the next scheduled date which I changed to that evening. I left it alone until the next morning and it not only did not defag per the schedule but the Vista tool said next scheduled defrag "never" and Norton was back to Pending again. I have to assume this has something to do with Norton. I am told that Norton's defrag tool is tied to Vista's tool.
I'm running Vista Home Premium. I have the Vista defrag set to go automatically on the first day of each month at 9 PM. The settings are correct on screen. However, it says next scheduled defrag = never, and the automatic defrag does not occur. I have to start it manually each month. I do not know what is wrong, nor how to fix it.
After contacting hp 5 times disk defrag still does not work on vista. i ran auslogic love it,, but after the $$$ i spent on my computer i want everything to work right. 16 hours and it was still defragging drive c. rann all the diag everything was fine. any ideas out there
After functioning properly since I got a new computer with 64-bit Vista nearly a year ago, the defragmenter now does its "spinning" for about 5 minutes and indicates: "Your file system performace can be improved. It is recommended that you defragment now." When I click on "Defragment now..." it spins again for about 5 minutes and repeats the same message. This repeats each time.
I know that few of you bother with Restore Points. It's something I play around with for the experience. But I have found out through two reinstalls and more BSODs than I can count that on "my" machine SP1, Auslogics reg. defrag and System Restore just don't play well together! The only way I could get my system to not crash on boot today was to start in safe, uninstall A.R.D. and restore to the only point I had left.
WARNING: only for advanced users who like to clean the registry. Quicksys regcleaner normally $25 free - only 4hrs left from here: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/
Win 7 compatible - have used this and deleted all 1200 entries it found. It makes a backup - been running for several hours and reboots with no probs. Also working fine so far on my Vista x64 and Win 7 x86 installs. After cleaning you need to shut the app. and reopen it for it to find it's backups. (Easy to find them by hand - it can compress them to.7z files, too ). Have used their regdefrag a lot - identical scans and results to the Auslogics and Glary versions- so use whichever defragger you already have. WARNING: not recommended to defrag registry across drives.
I check defragmenter regularly and each time it says my file performance is good...no need to defrag at this time. Should I defrag anyway? BTW, I'm running McAfee which has a disk defrag app. and it always gives me the same message...No need to defrag at this time.
I click the "defragment now" and instead of freeing up a few Gbt of HD, I have now 3G Less. As soon as I hit the "defrag now" (I have always had it run as scheduled) , my HD started to reduce by alarming speed before my eyes. The defrag took hours, 4 hours, by the end, i ended up less than 10G, 7 of which came back out of nowhere the next day, but 3 did not. So I did defrag and ended up 3G Less HDS than before.
To improve my laptop's (ASUS F3Jc - Vista Home Premium) performance, I used chkdsk and defrag on each drive. After I'd used the chkdsk and defrag respectively on my USB HDD (Maxtor 750GB) then I couldn't reach my portable HDD. It says "F: is not accesible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." When I right click to open the properties of the driver, It just shows me an empty HDD with no label. As you can guess there was a huge amount of effort stored in that HDD. How can I recover them? Even though I don't have the secret formula of Coca Cola in that HDD, it matters a lot to me.
Firefox regularly crashes for no apparent reason. Anyone know why? Also the load on my CPU is permanently over 50% and the hard drives spin for no reason. My system is quad core q6600 with 5gb ddr3 RAM and ATI 3870 HD HD was fully formatted before fresh installation.
how understanding fan speeds with regards to the cpu, 1st of i understand that the hotter the cpu the faster and louder it will become, now if i can explain a little or at least try some year ago or more i built my system, specs can bee seen in my profile,I have not been 1 for using the over clocking software that came with my mobo (U_GURU), well not so long ago but since before the hot weather i noticed that my CPU fan was running rather loud well enough to annoy me anyway, I have always had the U-GURU software installed but like i say never really used it, it just was there.
ok so with the rather loud fan noise i decided to take a look and noted that the fan was running 3,600 RPM under idle and load with temps of around 30-40 oC(is this normal?) i also tried to enable cool and quiet but i got Overclocking failed from the U-guru util, well i wasn't asking it to Overclock just to turn on the damn cool and quiet option.....so WTF? well it activated and i left it but only for the system to freeze/crash some hour or 2 later, well anyway i thought maybe i need to unclog all the dust so pulled the side of ect but no dust build up in the heat sink but still blasted it with the airline regardless to still find that the fan was running quite noisy, well i asked around in some repair shops ect and got the usual rubbish about faulty ram ect (ROFLMAO) anyway i though ok ill remove the ram ect and see if out of chance they maybe rite, nope nothing changed.........
Having a bit of a tough time learning the Advanced Query Language. I'm trying to find folders that BEGIN with something. I figured out that I should use kind:folders, but can only find information on how to query if the folder name contains something, not begins with. Let's say that I wanted to find all folders with a name that begins with the letter B. What would be the correct query string for this?
I have Windows Vista on my VAIO laptop. I use a wireless connection at my dorm to connect to the internet. Sadly, suddenly my Internet stopped working. It seems to be connected but no page can be loaded. At first when I diagnosed and repaired it said that there is no problem, but it still wouldn't load any pages. Now when I do a diagnose and repair it says something about the filter query policy being changed and to check my firewall setting.
I've got a silly question here. Its not really a problem, but I like my PC's to be set up the way I like it, and anything that changes it annoys me.
I have 3 physical IDE disks on my PC.
I've just formatted the C drive on of the IDE drives, on one of my PC's and re-installed everything, as it was time for a clean-up. To do this I disconnected two IDE drives leaving me with an IDE HDD & a CD drive as the slave. The Bios found them as Primary Master and Primary slave as expected. Windows Disk Management COnsole showed my C Drive as Disk 0 again as expected.
When all was working fine, I added the other HDD's as Secondary Master & slave. Again the Bios showed them correctly.
..However Windows Disk Management had changed my original Disk 0 to Disk 2
why is it that in Vista the system restore actually deletes all of my files as in my installed programs etc. etc. My downloads folder. And everything eles like that is affected yet windows say that shouldn't be happen. So how cna i fix this?
Would be interested in Forum's comments. I had a 9800 GX2 card that failed about 11 months into the 1 year warranty (after an agonising 4 weeks of trying to find out what was wrong with my machine!) The shop I bought it from replaced it FOC with a new single GTX260. When I queried them, that this didn't seem a fair replacement (I would have thought two GTX260's SLI'd together was fairer, their argument was:
The 9800 GX2 was no longer available as a new card The second hand 9800 GX2's are about NZ$400 (I am in New Zealand) and the new GTX 260 is the same price. The GTX 260 performs as well as the 9800 GX2 I am not unhappy with the GTX 260, but I feel kind of ripped off. NZ has pretty strict Consumer protection laws, so I will explore those as well, but my post here is to find out if this sort of replacement is common where high end cards fail and are no longer available.
i notice an extra lan address appearing in my router. i have the mac address filter on limiting access to both network pcs yet still this address appears.
Admittedly I may have done something to cause this but I can not get it right: Vista Home premium, 32 bit. New User, new PC. Had all data and music files on external HDD's. Moved data (documents, pictures) over last week, and moved Music files over to C drive today.
On Taskbar, at Start button, click on button, On right side of Start menu there are: under my picture, choices for "Me (user)", Documents, Pictures, Music, Games, then a divide and then, Search, Recent Items, Computer and so on. If I click on Documents I go to the folder with files of documents. Same with Pictures. The files from both Documents and Pictures came from an external HDD.............
I have a new PC running Vista Home Premium. I tried the snipping tool soonafter I received the computer three weeks ago. It appeared to work fine atthat time. I just tried to use it again but could not find the shortcut. Ithad been in the start menu under accessories but it was no longer there.
Using the Search facilities I found the program file "Snipping Tool.exe" onmy hard drive. I created a new shortcut but the program will not start, nothing happens. I also tried double clicking on the "Snipping Tool.exe"file.
Those of us who installed SP1 may remember that there was a cleanup tool (vsp1cln.exe)There is now a tool for sp2 called compcln.exe See: SP2 Disk Cleanup Tool. Once this tool has been run, SP2 cant be removed
Right now i'm running vista ultimate with a Q6600 and 4 gigs of ram. but i do graphics professionally and video a LOT so the memory is maxed out already. I'd like to prepare for the future with the 64 bit. i'm considering upgrading from a 32 bit to a 64 when Win7 is released later this year. with what i've researched already, i think my system should be able to handle it ok, but i was wondering if there were any kind of software tools that would check a system and advise what will NOT handle it. along the lines of the vista upgrade tool that was available.
i just got windows Vista Home Premium X64 a couple days ago and so far i have just a couple problems that i can't figure out. Well first of all i can't get the switching between windows thing to work correctly. My Girlfriend has Vista Home Premium also but she has 32 bit. But on hers the switching between windows is the live tabs of each window. And also when you hover the mouse over a minimized window on the taskbar its shows a live icon window of that window, but on mine it's just a tool tip. Another thing is i cannot change my colors of my taskbar and active windows. On my girlfriends PC when you go to the control panel and go to customize then colors it shows some different colors and it changes the taskbar as well as the windos but on mine its way different when you go to change the colors. And one last little question I have read about the Aero thing.. not sure exactly what it is.. i think its a theme right? well i don't have it under my themes list.
