Media Center Questions

Feb 11, 2009

I don't have Vista installed yet, but I want to set it up with an internal dual-tuner card, probably this one and use it as an ATSC DVR for OTA shows.
[url]

1) Can a Vista Ultimate computer running Media Center as a DVR be set to automatically wake up from S3 and start recording, then go back to sleep when it is done? I don't want to leave it running all day when on vacation just to record shows.

2) My Dell Dimension 4700 is a P4 3.0GHz, 3GB RAM, one 250GB SATA II 3.0Gbpsdrive for Vista to be installed and one 500GB SATA II 3.0Gbps for the recordings, with an eVGA NVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB video card with dual LCD displays attached.. I believe that to be a reasonable system. Do you?

3) My network is all Gigabit...or at least it was until I had to pull the PCIe Gigabit NIC from the Dell to make room for the Hauppauge card. There is only one PCIe slot available, so that leaves me with the onboard 10/100 unless I get a PCI Gigabit NIC. For streaming an HDTV recording to an"Extender for Windows Media Center" device for playback onto an HDTV, how much bandwidth does it gobble?

Anti Virus Program Questions. (AVG?)

Apr 14, 2010

I have a question about anti virus programs.

Recently I had some trouble with malware and came to realize how truly useless McAfee is, as my friend put it "its a DCS anti virus (doesn't catch ****)".

A few people recommended AVG and after doing some research it seems to be the way to go.

I was wondering what your opinions on AVG are and if there is anything else I could use to keep my comp safe. (I have ad block plus for firefox and malwarebytes but thats all. I feel bad for not being more careful with my poor machine, it's been abused)

Another thing. Would it be smart to just go ahead and remove McAfee from my computer completely after I get a new virus program?

2) What's the maximum storage limit of Vista and do mapped drives count against that limit?

Boot Configuration Data Editor Frequently Asked Questions

May 16, 2008

I copied the following from the "Boot Configuration Data Editor Frequently Asked Questions" which I found found elsewhere on the Microsoft website. Multiboot Environments. Can I install Windows Vista on a computer that already contains an operating system? Yes. You can install Windows Vista on a different partition. It is best to install Windows Vista after you install the older operating systems. Older operating systems will continue to use Boot.ini for boot configuration. Should I replace the code that used to work with Boot.ini to now use BCD on Windows Vista? No. You will need to alter your code so that it uses Boot.ini for the older operating systems, and so that it uses BCD on Windows Vista. What does "your code" mean?

If I want to install both XP & Vista on separate partitions, apparently I need to install XP first. During the XP install I have the option of creating 2 partitions don't I? It's my understanding that there can be only 1 primary partition & only the primary partition is bootable. Every other partition is an extended partition. This is what confuses me. XP uses the boot.ini file & is installed first on the primary partition. Won't Vista be installed on an extended partition? Since XP uses the boot.ini file & Vista uses the bcdedit file, which file is used if both XP & Vista are installed in a multiboot configuration? Which would be the default OS? To further complicate matters, suppose that I want to install XP, Vista & Linux. Which of the 3 do I install first since Linux uses a different boot file?

Print Jobs: Giving Couple Of Lines Of PCL Commands

Sep 19, 2009

This may actually be a Linksys problem, but I hope there's a workaround in Vista. Linksys wireless print server; network of computers (mostly Vista 32, some XP, one Vista 64, one Linux) that print through it to an HP LaserJet 1200 printer using HP PCL 5 drivers. All print jobs are OK, but many of them (somewhat unpredictably) are preceded by a junk page containing a couple of lines of PCL commands ("PJL COMMENT" and the like).

It is not clear whether the junk page is the beginning of the job or the tail end of the previous job -- thus I'm not even sure which computers are generating it. I think the former. That is, I think it is a set of PCL comments sent at the beginning of the job. Linksys drivers are not on the PCs. Instead I print through LPR or RAW protocol (both give the same results) on a TCP/IP port as recommended by Linksys.

I have tried the WinPrint print processor and 2 versions of the HP print rocessor. This seems to slightly change what's on the junk pages but not eliminate them. Printing several jobs in succession from the same computer, I usually don't get junk pages in front of them. But the actual conditions are hard to pin down. Trying to run around and try all the combinations is very tedious
