Computer Booting Slow And Freezes

Mar 23, 2008

My computer is really slow then it just freezes after a while. This started a few days ago. I turned on my computer, had a bite to eat. Then when I went to my room, my computer suddenly re-started itself. Then I began to notice it was really slow; I looked at the clocked it it was reseted to like "12:00 am" and the date was like in year 2005." It frooze so I restarted and at the beginning I was able to run a
program but minutes later it begins to be really slow until it freezes for good.

So I just went to "safe" mode and the speed on my computer and everything is normal. It's just when I go into normal mode that's when it's just horrible. I scanned for virus and nothing; cleaned all cookies and such and it didn't work. I dunno what else to do.

Freezes After Booting Up

Aug 19, 2009

After booting up the computer the desktop freezes immediately. If it doesn't freeze up immediately I'll have some functionality, but minimal. I'll no longer have access to the internet (no network adapter present), can't run programs (they fail to open) or can't install programs/updates. I have even gotten a couple of Blue screen error messages such as: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

In safe mode with networking I do have access to the internet. When I try to download updates in safe mode I can't because Install shield will not work, or some other excuse. There are no restore points to restore to. There was a Windows Framework update on August 7th. I tried to uninstall it, but apparently it was never installed properly. No blue screens while in Safe Mode. I've been trying to problem solve this on my own, but with my limited computer repair skills I'm scared to try things.

Reinstall: Vista Freezes On Booting

Dec 10, 2008

I am running Vista Home 32bit on an Acer T180. I recently upgraded the CPU from an Athlon Sempron to a Athlon 64 X2. Now when I boot the PC, Vista freezes as it boots. I can still boot into Safe Mode and also using a Live Linux DVD. Also, surprisingly, sometimes Vista will boot and will run fine and both cores of the CPU are recognised. I obviously need to solve this problem, but am unsure how to proceed.

After the PC freezes, I reset it and after a reboot am taken to a screen with the safe mode option that also advises using the Vista repair option. I have a DVD of Vista (not an OEM, but without SP1) but I have installed SP1 on the PC.......

Slow Start Up/booting

Jul 29, 2009

it takes 52 secs for my laptop vista 64 Home Premium to pop the log in screen & 58 after log in to load 8 start up programs. My desktop running on XP Pro does all that in 45-52 secs total. I've defragged hard drive, registry, killed aero, reduced opening window time, readjusted unwanted vista service (SP2- safe) program according to Black Viper and I don't see why I have to wait more than a minute loading to start working. Is Windows 7 going to take that long too? What else is there to be done to reduce loading time?

Slow Down Booting Process

Apr 8, 2008

Looks like my Vista x64 experience is a pain in the neck since the beginning. Here is the next one I am in front of: Vista needs from 5 to 10 minutes (sometimes maybe more but I do not have the patience to wait and I just switch off - switch on again). Once in Vista it works fast and I do not have any wait on starting application (Only Games), I can also say that once I put my user password, Vista is ready in few second including Wireless connection Network, but the Screen with the Scrooling Bar is the one which takes so long to disappear. If you see my rig, you'll deduce that cannot be a low Hardware performance. As I use it only for Gaming purpose I do not have much Application on Start-up. I do not even have a Anti-virus installed yet, which could slow down the Booting process. Shut down seems with no problem, faster than I am with XP Pro Sp2. Also weird result: If I restart my PC from Vista the BIOS does not detect anymore the DISC0, where dual Boot file are installed, so none of my OS can boot. I always have to Shut down Vista completly and Switch on again to have the BIOS detecting this HDD.

Computer Not Booting?

Apr 1, 2008

My laptop (Sony vaio w/Home Premium) came with a trial version of Norton 360. I decided that would uninstall it and replace it with Avast! free home. I uninstalled Norton and any other Symantic software found in Add/remove programs. I also ran the Norton removal tool that someone posted a link to. Everything seemed fine. I noticed that Sony said I had a few software updates that needed to be downloaded & installed. I downloaded them and installed them. Still everything seemed fine.

I had downloaded an earlier version of Avast last month to install on another computer. I had also downloaded the lastest version last night. I accidently installed the earlier version. It installed without any problems but soon notified me that an newer version existed. I then installed the lastest version OVER the installed version. I guess this is where I goofed.

After the install completed the computer needed to reboot. Well the computer would not fully shutdown. My screen went black but the mouse was till lit and I could move the curser. I let the computer sit this way for about 20 minutes. I was finally able to get the computer to shut down by hitting the power button a few times.

This morning when I hit the power button the computer immediately went back to this odd state. Curser worked but no windows. I hit the power button a few times and the computer finally acknowledged it had a problem and allowed me to boot in safe mode. From here I did a system restore to yesterday morning. The computer is fine right now but I would still like to replace Norton with Avast. Then I would like to install SP1.

Slow Boot:Freezes On Run Application

Sep 29, 2009

It takes about 2 minutes to boot to all my startup programs. However, for the next 10 to 15 minuts the hard drive is running continuously. If I try to run another app., e.g. Outlook, it will freeze and the "Not Responding" notation appears at the top of the screen. I've tried to nail down what might be hogging the hard drive (using reliability and performance monitor) but can't identify any single program. I have 50 gigs free space, 2 GB RAM. I defrag once a week and clean up temp files and cashes once a day. It seems all proposed solutions I've run across lead me to one of the registry cleanup programs. I run Reg. Clean & Wise Registry Cleaner once a week. Real time monitoring by McCafee and Windows Defender. I have run both AD Aware and Spy Bot frequently.

Internet Explorer Slow & Often Freezes

Jan 12, 2009

I have been using IE7 for a year and a half. No problems. Now it takes twenty seconds to load, and each time I visit a site it's slow, and it often freezes on me. I installed Canon software for 8600 scanner, and that started my IE7 problem. I have since removed the program but IE7 still is slow. What can I do to correct this? Can I uninstall IE7 and reinstall? What do look for that the software installation might have left on my computer? Might add that Foxfire works fine.

Uninstalling IE7: Slow As Molasses And Often Freezes

Jan 12, 2009

Internet Explorer has taken a turn for the worse. Not sure what caused it, but it loads slow (Firefox doesn't), and every click is slow as well. Is it possible in uninstall, and then reinstall? Would it worth my effort to give that a try. I have been using it for about a year and a half now, and it's been great.

The problem started when I installed Canon scanner software. Not sure what happened, but immediately after IE7 started acting up. It's slow as molasses and often freezes. If anyone has suggestions please, please let me know. It's driving me crazy. I did uninstall the Canon program, but evidently something is still interfering. I have also scanned with Spybot and Norton, and everything comes up fine. I want my old, fast IE7 back!

Install Slow, Freezes, Black Screen

Jan 20, 2010

This computer ran Vista x64 fine for over a year. I sold it to brought it back to me the other day stating it started up, but just a black screen. First thought was power supply. Replaced the power supply with a 500 watt Thermaltake. System POST's. Gets to windows screen with the loading bar. Freezes. Decide to re-install thinking maybe there was too many unsucessful boots.

Install is VERY slow. Never have I seen it do this. It takes forever to get into the language screen. Finally once installed, Freezes at the windows screen with the loading bar underneath, yet again. Fooling around, I popped out the CMOS battery and cut all power to the system (Resetting CMOS, yes I know I can do it via Jumpers as well but I dont have the manual handy) and low and behold once I replace the battery and reboot I get into vista. I shutdown, restart to see if everythings all set. Frozen at the windows loading bar screen again...............

Slow Home Network Access, Explorer Freezes

May 15, 2009

Dell Studio Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium. Home wired & wireless network with Wireless N D-Link router, Netgear ReadyNAS duo wired to router, PS3 game console connected to router. I only use wireless from my laptop. When I try to move files around on the NAS using windows explorer, I can't seem to browse the NAS' content for more than a few minutes, then explorer locks up or enters a mode where it keeps refreshing the view of the network directory and doesn't allow basic file operations like right-clicking on a file to get its properties.

I can't get more than 1 Mbps of transfer speed with Robocopy out of the NAS. I have some video files on the NAS unit. Double clicking on any video to play it in Media Player is the worst thing to do - WMP doesn't manage to download enough data to buffer it and never allows to be shut down. I prevents Windows from shutting down cleanly. I made sure I had the latest drivers for the wireless adapter.

RAID 0 Setup On X64 Home Premium:computer's Hardware Not Support Booting To This Disk

Mar 26, 2008

I'm attempting to set up a new PC with RAID 0 using Vista x64 Home Edition Premium. However, I'm having no luck. (Hours of scouring various forums have yielded nothing as well.) I've set up 2 RAID 0 partitions across my 2 SATA drives using Intel's Matrix Storage Manager. (CTRL + I thing at boot). When I load up Vista for installation, it recognizes the partitions but refuses to let me install on them. I get an alert at the bottom of the screen saying that my "...computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I'm not completely clear on what this means, but after entering BIOS, I have my drive configuration set to configure SATA as RAID. Attempting to continue the installation yields something like "Windows cannot find a drive that is suitable for installation" (not verbatim, sorry.) I have downloaded all of Intel's drivers for my motherboard and have even hunted down the RAID driver for my HDDs. I put all of those files onto a USB drive, but Vista doesn't seem to recognize any of them.

Computer Freezes Up

Sep 17, 2008

About every couple of days, somewhere during the day the computer just freezes up entirely - can't close programs, can't even get the task manager to come up, etc. As such I can't do anything except turn the computer off. Then, when I turn it back on, of course it wants to boot back into safe mode. So I do that - then try restarting from within safe mode, and just about every time, when I try rebooting in that way, upon entering my password into the machine, the "Welcome" screen comes up and stays up for over an hour.

Ive tried everything. Installed on different hard drive, used different memory, different power supply, different CD rom drive, absolutely nothing will get the installation to not freeze. The windows event viewer is useless. I even tried 3 different install cd's. It's not overheating as far as i can tell either. Like i said vista 32 runs perfect so i cant understand whats going on? Should I RMA my motherboard? Ever heard of a cpu being defective in this way

Everything is fine until I leave and come back...and it is frozen again. I cannot ctrl-alt-delete either. When I went to do a system restore, I saw that all my restore points were gone. How could this have happened? I thought maybe a windows update could be the source so I uninstalled the many updates (approx. 25). the next morning, I saw they had all returned even though I have it set not to download automatically.

Computer Freezes After Coming Out Of Sleep

Mar 23, 2008

My computer (HP m9000t) freezes up after coming out of sleep mode. I have tried turning off sleep / hybrid sleep / hibernate, but the computer still goes into "sleep" of some kind. When it comes out of sleep, I can hear a whirling sound, which could be the harddrive starting up, but moments later it sounds like it spins down and stops, and then the whole computer freezes up, and I have to turn it off and then turn it back on in order to make it work again. I've tried to make it (using power options) so that the harddrive does not power down, but
that doesn't appear to do anything either, because the drive still turns off when the computer sleeps. Before this problem developed, I was having problems with the Media Center remote not working after sleep, and was also having problems with the usb ports, and the sound turning off.....................
