Mar 16, 2010I have just bought a second hand laptop (once again!). I have changed the user name on it to my name (kasim). But the problem is that when i go to Computer and then Users, the user name is still the same as before. The only settings that are on my name is the start menu. Can u please help me change the user name in every setting.
How Change The User Logon?
Mar 23, 2008Just starting to look at Vista, but one thing that I haven't figured out is how to change the login. In XP Pro, if you went to user accts in control panel, you could choose to change the way users log on and log off, that way it didn't come up with the list of users on the machine, but worked like a domain login where you had to input your username and password.
I can't figure out how to change this on a stand alone Vista machine. I don't want the list of users, I just want to hit ctrl-alt-del and get a sign on screen where I input the username and password. Is this possible, and how/where do I make this change? Again, it is Vista Ultimate.
User Folder Shortcut Name Change
Jan 4, 2008I accidentally changed my user folder shortcut name in Windows Explorer under Desktop.
It was changed when I tried to save a file to the desktop and accidentally create new folder while highlight the user folder shortcut. It might be a bug in the system, since I can’t duplicate the change again.
I have tried to rename it but nothing happens.
I deleted it but it came back after refresh (F5).
There is no property available since this is a special folder or shortcut like network shortcut in Windows Explorer.
I briefly went through the registry and search for ‘shell’ related value but find none to resolve the issue. Did the search on Google and this forum, I have found nothing related to this problem. Maybe I use the wrong word for the search. Does anybody know how to reverse the change or edit in the registry?
Deletetion Of Change User Account
Jun 15, 2009I am pretty computer literate but a) I have just joined this group and b) I have only just progressed to Vista. I have a problem and it's bugging me to the point of turning me neurotic! I bought my Vista laptop from "Comet" and I have no idea how to delete all of their information from my computer. Whatever I do the folder C/Users/Comet appears everywhere - hundreds of times in the registry. I cannot delete it from User Accounts because for some reason it doesn't appear there at all - just my own admin account. It will not allow me to rename it (that would just screw up the system anyway, I expect). I want to remove all references to COMET. But how? What if I took it back to the shop? But would my data be and settings preserved?

Dec 15, 2008They were there just there a couple of days ago, each forum have a very unique, vista like icon and, all of a sudden...I don't think I have changed anything on my USer CP, nor have I installed anything new on my pc (Vista updates today) and yet... they are gone. Not really a big deal but is just a bother to be loosing some things with my Vista x64 OS. I feel like the computer is either hunted or I have been hit with a virus/spyware/malaware but I did a whole check-up and the pc is clean.

Mar 23, 2008I installed Vista Ultimate about 8 months ago. This was an upgrade from XP. I just now have had the need to do an uninstall. I went to my Admin User account (although my normal user account has Admin privileges) and when I go to Add/Remove programs, there are no command lines for Uninstall/Remove/Repair programs.
I verified that my normal user account had Admin privileges. Logged into it and it does not have the capability to do any of the above. I even added a new user with Admin privileges, no success. I then re-installed Vista Ultimate as an "upgrade" again, still the same problem. All my user accounts have full security access, so I know that's not it. I've read through the threads and although there are similar admin issues, I haven't seen this specific one. I have tried a couple of the suggestions for other Admin problems to no avail.

Mar 26, 2008[This is my second post on the same subject. The first thread died] I had this Vista Home Basic machine working okay, but the power went out and then another person who was high used the machine. They named a new user as administrator. I don't know what else they did.
Now I have a new user as administrator and the previous users are gone. I still see evidence of them in the file tree but the old programs are gone and the documents are buried in C > Users > Admin (that was a name of a previous user that I had named when I first got the machine) I've gradually installed some of my old programs and I'm currently
just rebuilding everything, but it would be a lot easier if I could revert to the old user system. The Control Panel > add or remove user accounts is useless. I only have two icons there So is there anyway to return to the original condition? How can I recover the missing users?

Feb 6, 2009Received my computer back yesterday from HP with reinstalled clean version of Vista Home Premium. It came back with a user name of 'test'. I attempted to change the name to my name "Bob Lafayette" and the user name in task manager under user shows up as "BOBLAFAYETTE est". In System Information the user name shows as BOBLAFAYETTE est
In user profiles the administrator shows as Bob Lafayette. The computer name shows as "BobLafayette." Computer description shows as "Bob's Computer." How can I amend the user name in task manager to reflect solely "BobLafayette"? Without the "test"?
One User Cannot Log On

Oct 23, 2009the special junctions that Vista and Win7 have added to the profile directories for backwards-compatibility. No backup software I have seen (short of complete imaging software) seems to backup and/or restore junction points. So I find myself with the profile missing all the default junction points, and quite frankly, not sure how to manually recreate them. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to replicate the Vista/Win7's original junctions that are hidden when "Hide Protected Operating System Files" is enabled.
The junction points that I am referring to are things like ("My Documents", "My Music", "Application Data", "Local Settings", etc). Is there a tool out there that can accomplish this for me? Or is there somethign I can do by hand to recreate these junction points? I have searched and searched the web for hours, but cannot seem to find anyone who has asked this question before.
User Accounts Gone
Oct 21, 2009I restarted my computer yesterday and when it came back on only guest account was available. My user account and my sons account were gone. I tried starting in safe mode and got "windows could not connect to the sens service. contact admin". I tried restoring my system to two different points 10/17 and 10/19 and neither worked. So now I am on my computer as a guest. I go to C: users and can see my username and my sons but can't open them b/c I am not an admin.

could save me an hour or two with my first Vista install and apprise me of the user SID (the last segment) that Vista assigns to the first user created? i'm hoping that it is either -0003 or -0004 so i don't have to reassign user IDs on the other boots
Can’t Delete A User With No Name?
Mar 31, 2008I have been having this problem for a while now. Under any file I download or any shortcut I make under security is a User with no name. This is what it says: Account Unknown (S-1-5-21-3555475015-4039561939-2811441107-1002). This has been concerning me because I’ve noticed that any file with this in security can’t be removed by anything but the Recycle Bin, which I find interesting, I usually use a file shredder for any file I want to delete, but I can’t. So my question is how do I delete this user name… with no name?

Jul 29, 2009The shared printer is connected to LPT of a Vista computer. We used to have an XP computer that could print to this printer. We changed the XP comp for a Vista notebook. This notebook has the same user/password as the Vista machine where the printer is connected to. Hence, this user can print from the notebook.
Now the strange part: another user on this notebook can't. It is sent to the printer spooler, sits there for a few minutes ('printing...') and then there's an error message (just 'cannot print' or something like that). We set this account to administrator type, during install we put in and stored the account name and password of the account that can print (so the one that is the same on both computers) but to no avail. May 12, 2010Sent my computer off to diagnose a program on the weekend. I was told some start up programs were taken off. Now when i turn on the computer it does the usual windows logo animation and instead of going to the log on screen it loads up the account straight away. I am the only user but still want the machine locked so i have to enter a password to log on. Just wondering if it needs to be added to the start up list or something to get it to start as normal again??

It started this morning when I logged in and everything off of my
desktop was gone. All of the files and everything. I don't know what
happened, I didn't delete the account or make a new one or anything.
All I know is that my brother, he was stupidly going through my
files from his user account (through Computer/Users), since he was made an admin, and he was deleting some files off of my user account. I'm not sure what it was but it must have been something he deleted that messed up everything! I still see some of the items in my garbage can of stuff that might have been deleted by the moron. The
other user accounts are fine, its just mine that is missing everything
and acting like its a brand new account.
I don't know what he deleted but I know he didn't do a complete wipeout of my account.I
still have a feeling that my files are somewhere because the hard drive
is still the same size.

screwing up the folder line-up in my user folder. In spite of many tries I haven't been able to "unscrew" it. There are two main problems:
1. There are now two folders called Pictures (E referring to ther new partition
Both of these folders contain the same subfolders and files. No matter what I try, I cannot delete one of these listings.
2. There is an additional folder called Pictures.
However this folder contains all the music folders and files. When I try to rename this folder to Music, I get the error message:"This action can't be completed because the
