Bulk Search: Consolidate The Files

Nov 1, 2008

I have Vista Ultimate. I need to find about 60 files on my PC, the file names are listed on a word document, and the actual files are stored in many different folders on my PC.

I need to consolidate the files into one folder. Is there some way I can do a bulk search using "search" where I load the file names and Vista finds them and shows where they are located.

How To Bulk Unblock Files

Mar 23, 2008

I think since XP SP2 days, a new security attribute was added to filessuch that files that came in by IM, email, or across the network were separately identified and blocked from being executed. To unblock, one need to go the Properties of the file and then click the Unblock button.

XP was rather lax in enforcing blocking. But Vista appears to block everything, including html files inside a zip file.

Each time I unzip the contents of a compressed file, I have to go andunblock each and every of its files. What is the method to Unblockmore than one file at a time? The moment I select two files, theUnblock button cannot be seen anymore, even if both individually is blocked. What is the command line version or Windows Powershell cmdlet to unblock a file?

Can't Select Multiple Files Perform Bulk Operation

Feb 9, 2009

I have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security).

These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission. My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this: - Use Internet Explorer- Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation) - Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls. Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.

Search Program, Non-indexed Files

Feb 3, 2010

I have now found out about the search you can do with Windows key + F, but I was wondering where that program is that the shortcut starts. Is it possible to make another shortcut that would just be on the desktop to the same search program, so you would only need to click on the shortcut on the desktop?

Also, is it possible to set a default so the search program would also search the non-indexed files, instead of going to the advanced screen and having to check the box? Or does Vista want to require you to have indexing on for every drive?

Folders/Files Deleted Show Up In Search

Mar 23, 2008

Vista Home Prem 32bit..... I used the "search" feature to look for something and the results displayed several Folders & Files I had deleted some time back. When I right clicked on these items that had been deleled...I got the message, The item cannot be found.....make sure the Folder exists....check that the path is correct.....Or similar words. I would expect to see the message appear appear because the items don't exist.....but why did the search display them? Is there a way to clean emove them so they don't show up on future Searches?

Search Failing With Special/technical Searches Rather Than Simple Filename Search, 85% Of This OS Is Now Great

Jun 22, 2009

except for a few grand issues like Search failing with special/technical searches rather than simple filename search, 85% of this OS is now great. I love it now. And can you guess how many processes show up in TaskManager? 26. ONLY TWENTY SIX. My IE8 starts up lightning fast and swings by all sites except videos, for certain sites w/FlashPlayer & Videos I enable CompatibilityView which aligns those older sites to IE8.

Applications startup as if they were already loaded into Memory, faster than in WinXP. Who knew? It feels like quad-core at 4GHz, seriously. Everything is momentary as if it were loaded from RAM This OS is still a failure, however, versus WinXP. Are you shocked to hear "failure" after my praises, do I contradict myself? No. Because most people are far from my tenacity and just by education, hobbies and profession I alway stune up things to perfection. My cheap car leaves far more expensive models wondering what rocket had just passed them on LIE Expressway. I enjoy tinkering with technology.

It took me 2 weeks (?) to tune up Vista beast to be a polished fast, bug-free beast. It's more convoluted than was tuning WindowsXP. I spent several days in Registry, GroupPolicies, SecPolicies, filesystem digging out and blatantly renaming & moving system files no one is supposed to touch.........

Windows Ultimate X64 Search Engine - Search Fails To Index

Jun 18, 2009

I've got an apparently "broken" search installation. So that I can skip through the normal "click the folder you want to index" type of answers, it's way beyond that. Let me give some background first. This is a new installation of Vista x64 Ultimate on this machine. I just installed it a little over a week ago after I got a blue screen of death that wouldn't allow any type of system restore, etc on the prior install. My prior installation on that machine was a Vista Ultimate x32 bit. The prior installation had the OS on the C: drive and I had moved "My Documents" out of a Windows XP onto the D: drive (D:My DOcuments).

In that prior installation, I left all Music, Videos, documents etc. under the original layout and just pointed the Vista "music", "documents", etc folders to the sub folders. I had no problem indexing on my prior version. I have a Vista 64 bit Ultimate at work as well and IT has no problem indexing even under the default locations..........

*SEARCH*

May 3, 2008

I open c: drive and do a search for "temp." I want to find all the temp folders and see if there is junk in them I can delete.

Search finds about 40 folders with the word "temp" in them and takes about 25 seconds to do it.

I click on one of the found folders and it opens and I check out what is in there.

I click the arrow to go back to the search list and the damn thing starts over it does the search again.

So I try the "Save search" thing... but all that does is save the search word that's about as stupid a function as Microsoft has ever thought up. What's the point in saving a search word when it just starts over anyway?

In XP I could do what I wanted in search. Check one of the found folders and go back to the search list. Is there a way to junk vista's search and go back to xp's?

Both were edited and saved today. If I go into the folder using Windows Explorer both show a modified date of today, 9th June. If however I do a SEARCH for the document name (both have the same name), then the .doc document shows a Modified date of today, but the ODT document does not. How Do DOS FIND With W/E Search?

Apr 5, 2008

I may not understand how Windows Explorer's Search (W/E Search) is supposed to work. I know how the Find in the DOS Window works, so let me start with an example using FIND. My expectation that both have similar capabilities is perhaps misplaced. In the "search for content" thread below I describe the steps I took to make sure the .DAT extension is in the index control panel, and re-indexed several times to insure that .DAT files are in the index.

I have a folder named TPL which I think has been indexed. It has about 5000 text files in it most of which happen to have the extension .DAT, and several other text files, some of which have the extensions .INC and .TXT. I know some of the files have the phrase GRID in them, some multiple times. I go to the folder I want in DOS, and get to the point where the cursor is:............
