How To View Folder Containing Desktop Background Image

Aug 25, 2014

If my desktop background image is a slideshow from my picture folders, is there a way to open the folder holding the particular picture from the desktop? I ask because sometimes a picture will pop up, and I'm not sure what folder it came from. It seems like in older windows versions you could right click on the desktop and select "open folder" or something and be taken to the folder holding the picture. Is that still possible?

I don't know what I did, but all the background images on all websites (including this one) are gone...if I right click on the web page, the selection "View Background image" is greyed out, disabled. How to reset the background images on websites so they appear again..

I just got a new computer with Windows 8, I use Firefox. If I open these websites with IE, the background images are there. So what did I do to my Firefox settings?

I have spent over 4 hours searching through the control panel, tools, Firefox itself, and I can't find a solution.

Newly Built PC - Can't Change Desktop Background Image

Mar 7, 2014

I recently built my own PC (I5-4670K) and installed Win 8.1 64 Bit OEM Builder. Installation went fast and easy. Updated all my drivers/win updates in the past 2 hours. Windows 8.1 is activated.

When I go to Taskbar and Navigation properties -> navigation menu -> "Show my desktop background on Start " and "Search everywhere instead of just my apps when I search from the Apps view" are BOTH GRAYED OUT.

When I go to Personalization to choose images for my background nothing happens. Not even windows desktop backgrounds or anything in my picture library gets recognized.

Maintenance :: System Image Recovery Can't Find Image On USB Drive

Mar 7, 2013

I've been dual-booting Windows 8 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate, but a while back my Windows 8 kind of went "South" and wouldn't boot at all (I got an error message that a device was "not attached"). I have a recent system image on an external USB hard drive, but when I boot to "system recovery" using my repair disk it can't seem to find my USB drive at all.

The tutorials here mention installing a SATA driver to access disks that are not recognized, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

How To Clone / Image Hard Drive And Restore It To New SSD Drive

Jul 10, 2013

I know there is good software out there to clone/image my hard drive and restore it to a new SSD drive. I'm just wondering though, since my laptop is brand new, I made a full recovery to a USB drive and included the OEM recovery partition.

Couldn't I just swap out the old HDD with the new SSD and boot with the recovery stick and do a full recovery back to the new SSD?

Also, however I do this, recover or image backup/restore, do I need to do some type of SSD alignment? I can't find a clear answer on that.

How To Recreate Image On External USB Drive

Feb 24, 2013

I created restore disks for my new laptop. It gave me the option of using a USB drive, but I chose the option to create DVD disks instead. This went fine up until disk 6. I was able to finish, but the system has a problem reading the 6th disk. I cannot recreate the disks because HP, for some reason, made it so you can only do this once. I want to recreate the image on an external USB drive. Is there any way around this? HP will sell me a recovery set, but apparently only on disks.

Maintenance :: Using Windows 7 Image To Restore Certain Drive

Feb 23, 2013

I have 2 hard drives in my computer, my main Windows 8 C:, and a win7/game/data drive, the second of which is failing. reports show it is failing a smart short test, and although it has been running fine for months, i figured i would replace it with my tax return.

My question: If i create a system image of C: and D:, would it be possible to just restore the D: portion of the image, or do I have to restore both, then delete the second C: on the new drive? i do not have the resources or courage to test this on my system now because I am not sure what this reformat, and with my luck, the drive would die during the restore.

Hardware Drivers :: How To Get Notification When Insert SD Card

Apr 8, 2014

Some setting must have changed. Or maybe it was the 8 to 8.1 update.

I use to get a notification at the upper right when I turned on an external HD, or inserted an SD card. I could click on it, and it gave me the opportunity to open it in explorer.

Now I don't get the notification.

The device works, but I have to go to My Computer if I want to see it in explorer.

Is there a setting for this somewhere?

Error / Insert Media Some Files Are Missing?

Jul 14, 2014

I have an error when trying to restart my computer to factory settings. I am running on windows 8.1. It used to say "Could not find recovery environment" but after looking on forums for the day I got it to say the new error (Which I think is better than the old one). So when I go to settings it then change PC settings, than update and recovery, than recovery than remove everything and re install windows, It gives the error "Insert media, some files are missing. Insert recovery disk or drive" I want to restart it because my computer had randomly switched to a temporary profile, than i fixed it but the "temporary" profile was the new one I had to use and there are many messed up things happening with it. I do not have any disk or my windows activation code. Also, I have used a partition manager before to change the size of one of my partitions (The windows one) ...

Maintenance :: System Image Recovery From Network Drive - Not Found?

Mar 25, 2014

I have been routinely backuping my OS and important files using Windows 7 backup on a NAS. It just so happened that I needed to re-image my OS drive and I got into the Windows 8 recovery boot sequence.

Under the Advanced tools I selected the System Image Recovery and tried to look for the system image on the network path. Although the prompt said it was connecting to the network , the network share was not found. the command prompt couldn't ping google.com and netsh wlan <SSID> command did not work in hopes of connecting to my local wifi.

Is there a way to connect to the wifi network where my NAS is connected to in order to re-image from the system image found on the NAS? Luckily , there was an older image on a separate local HDD that I could re-image from but I would prefer if I could connect to the NAS during the recovery process.

Security :: Windows 8 Drive - Access Folder On Mounted Disk Image?

Aug 27, 2013

I use O&O Disk Image 7.2 to make images of my Windows 8 drive. Occasionally I need to mount an image to access folders and files. One folder I can't access is my user folder. I get the message 'You don't currently have permission to access this folder.' I took ownership of the folder but that didn't work. I get a similar result for the folder "C:WindowsCSC" if you want to see how my user folder behaves.

How can I access my user folder on my mounted image?

Windows 8 Refuses To Mount ISOP Image Because Image Is Sparse

Oct 31, 2012

I have problem mounting .iso images in Windows 8 Pro.

The error message I was getting was this:

and in powershell I got this:

Essentially the problem is that windows .iso mounting does not like 'sparse' files. I had used Acronis backup to backup my original .iso files and this DOES use sparse files. You can check if a file is 'sparsed' by looking at the files details in properties. The 'P' in the attributes represents a sparse file. See the screenshot below.

The result? When I restored my .iso images I could no longer mount them.

The simplest solution I have found is to just copy the .iso to a new file - this seems to create the new file without the sparse flag set.

Screen Saver Background Color

Jan 5, 2013

When using a screensaver that is suppose to have a transparent background (be able to see what is on the desktop) it defaults to the background color chosen for the start screen theme.

An easy example is the bubbles screensaver that comes preloaded, the weird thing is when selected and you preview it, it previews with a transparent background you are able to see what is on your desktop, but when you let it run its time and it pops up on its own it replaces the background with the color theme you chose for your start screen.

How to change it to remain transparent? I've tried changing the background color of the start screen to transparent with Decor8 but the screensaver background still is not transparent.

Attached are the images of how it should look and how it actually looks.
