Windows 8 - How To Enable Included RAMDisk Drivers
Mar 7, 2012
Windows 8 has a RAMDisk driver included but I don't know how to enable it, the path is:
C:windowssystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
Ram disk.inf_amd64_d76914a4306b4196
18.02.2012 00:38 4.010 ramdisk.inf
18.02.2012 05:36 28.160 ramdisk.sys
If you add this driver a new device tree called RAMDisk shows up, but under drives I can't see a new volume. How to enable this RAMDrive? I have 16GB RAM, so I'd really like to do that.

Just sharing in case people have been having the same problem following a Store update to 8.1.
After downloading and installing via the store, a restart shows a bluescreen displaying:
"Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
There isn't enough memory available to create a ramdisk device
Error Code: 0xc0000017
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media... blah blah blah"
However, after getting that message, I was able to select F9 and it rebooted back into Windows 8 with a message stating:
We couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC
0xC1900101-0x20017
After a lot of digging, I decided that a system refresh was the way forward.
After I did this, I installed one update - KB2871389. This made the 8.1 update visible in the store
Applied the store update and it worked perfectly.

I am unsure whether I should enable "Automatically get device drivers, apps, and info for new devices" when installing Windows 8 Pro?
What exactly will it do?
If I enable this, will Windows then automatically install software packages/drivers from the manufacturer, like for example the Logitech Setpoint software for their keyboards and mouse and similar software for other devices? I don't want or need that. Or will it behave like in Windows 7?
On my other PC with Windows 7 I see in Windows Update that there are a couple of optional updates, including that Logitech stuff, as well as some driver for a BenQ monitor I have and also nvidia video drivers. This kind of stuff I don't want or need installed automatically as important updates in Windows Update - so I am worried if enabling this automatic driver stuff in Windows 8 is different than Windows 7? Meaning that it will get installed secretly/automatically?
However, it's fine that Windows finds them so I can manually go and check if I want to install any of it.
The key is that the updates are optional in Windows 7, but I have seen a few people complain about Windows 8 installing stuff like video drivers and mouse drivers automatically.

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a SDD with a second HDD along side it. Inside the Device Manager I disabled my second HDD and rebooted my system.
Windows started as normal, but a few key windows programs have stopped working:
- Task Manager
- Device Manager (basically all control panel functions)
- Powershell (Command Prompt Works, but can't be opened with administrative rights)
The main problem is that I now can't enable my second HDD. Why the HDD is needed for these programs and how I can re-enable my HDD?

sometimes when testing new systems I have to install Office 2010 from scratch (I have a VL enterprise version so activation isn't an issue).
However Windows update then every time prompts for about 1.5GB of updates and fixed.
How to "slipstream" these into my office install disk - or at least store these updates manually so I don't have to keep downloading the same stuff over and over again.

I've just built a new computer that has a 2nd hand HDD as the secondary drive. It was causing messages to appear like "Hard drive failure imminent - do you want to back up the drive". Since I was still setting up everything on the primary drive I disabled the messages by clicking "Do not show these messages again". Now I realise I should enable the message and remove the offending HDD. I'm running windows 8.1.
How do I re-enable these messages?

I am trying to load Lexmark 5470 printer and get "enable bidirectional communication" error message. I am trying to load it on a brand new Toshiba laptop running 8.1 Suggested fix is to go to "ports" tab in the printer dialog box and enable it. I can't find the enable box to click. Any thoughts on resolving this issue. Both Lexmark and Microsoft won't talk to me w/o a credit card. The ptr is 5 years old and is not worthy of any significant investment, although it did work well.

I'm running Win 8. On my brand new computer (Asus X 550BL) I've included several apps in my startup folder. Some of them run at system start and some don't.
My Firefox starts from startup ok. A batch file used to run my WAMP server works ok as well.
But my attempt to startup WinAmp fails to start. Manually clicking my WinAmp desktop shortcut works fine, but it won't 'auto' startup when that same shortcut is included the startup folder.
This all worked fine in Win 7.
All the startup folder items are set to run as a admin.
Miffed.

I recently upgraded my windows 8.1 to windows 8.1 pro as I wanted to enable bitlocker encryption on the laptop.
The issue is that I can't seem to enable or find bitlocker in any of the area's outlined. When I try to right click on the C: drive I don't have an option for bitlocker. When I go into control panel, there's no bitlocker icon. When I do a search on the machine for bitlocker I do get a "manage bitlocker" icon, but it's doesn't do anything when I click on it.
I have followed the tutorial on this site and downloaded/installed the reg files to enable it on a non tpm device. Can see that they did update the policy on the machine, but still no joy.
When I go into PC info on the machine in question I don't see anything about bitlocker. It's like it's not there. Do you have to add a windows feature to enable it?

Did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Update 1 from a TechNet ISO. Trying to figure out how to activate the new Start menu. I click on Start and get the the Start screen, click on the Start button and get the same. Gone through a few settings when I right click the task bar, properties and I don't see anything obvious in there.
I know I'm on Update 1 since I can minimize Metro apps.

I am running Windows 8 x64 without secure boot enabled. According to the screen shot
secure boot is "Unsupported" but my motherboard has secure boot features in it. Its just that I didn't have secure boot enabled when I installed Windows 8 so Windows is unable to use secure boot now. What are the steps for setting up my computer for installing windows in secure boot mode ?
Pc Specs-:
Motherboard: Gigabyte H77m-D3H (rev 1.1)GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-H77M-D3H (rev. 1.1)
BIOS ver: F11 (Latest)
Ram:8 Gb DDR3 Corsair
HardDisk-: 1) Western Digital 160 GB (boot) 2) Western Digital 1 TB.
I had mailed Gigabyte support on how to enable secure boot they told me the following-:
"We suggest you can first back up data, reset BIOS items we mentioned in first mail, format your HDD into GPT partition and then reinstall Genuine Windows 8 to test again."
So I am asking how can I format my HDD into a GPT ? Is there anything else I need to before I install Windows 8 again ?? What are the exact steps to follow.
Also, there are two things is there any app available via which I can backup my entire C drive including Program Files, all my installed apps, and all of my hotfixes and Windows updates ?? Because I don't want to reinstall everything again and again update my Windows 8.

The Direct3D acceleration for 32bit Windows applications is disabled. I need to enable this so that most games and Direct3D using Windows Store apps start working again.
How it went:
Previously, Microsoft WDDM v1.0 drivers were installed (from Windows Update) and the system had no problems. Everything was working, well, almost everything. That was when I installed Minecraft. As I launched it, an error popped up saying 'pixel format not accelerated'. I researched on that and found out that it was an OpenGL issue. I downloaded and launched GPU Caps Viewer and found out OpenGL v1.1 on my system, whereas Minecraft needed 1.4 or more to run. I further researched and found that the Microsoft's WDDM v1.0 drivers supported the maximum OpenGL v1.1 (well, at least for my GPU). However on Intel's official site, it said my GPU CAN support OpenGL v1.4. And also on Minecraft forums someone said that Intel's drivers were needed for older GPU's in order for Minecraft to work. So I looked at the Download Center, but the latest drivers for my GPU were for Windows 7 32 and 64bit not Windows 8 [URL] .....
Upon thinking that at least Windows 7 drivers would work on Windows 8 if not XP's or Vista's, I downloaded the Windows 7 x64 drivers. They installed without an issue. Restarted my PC. Checked GPU Cap Viewer again, and voila! OpenGL version 1.4 was displayed. I re-installed Minecraft and it worked like a charm! Also checked another OpenGL animation software Blender and it was also working . But then I noticed something. Some Windows Store games and apps were exiting as soon as opened them. Also all the desktop games I have e.g Warcraft showed some Direct3D or DirectX related error. All of these applications were 32bit.
I then opened up "dxdiag".The 64bit version said "Enabled" for all three as you can see below:
But when I opened the 32bit one, first it said this:
And then on the display tab, Direct3D acceleration was disabled:
What have I tried:
1- As seen from some tutorials around the web, I went to Advanced Display settings but no troubleshoot tab was found:
So yeah, no moving the slider to right side to give 'Full' Direct3D/Hardware acceleration. Those XP days are long gone.
2- As stated above, I have updated the video drivers to 'Intel's' latest version. ( Also tried the second latest version just in case).
3- Updated the DirectX through web setup. It now says that newer or equivalent version is already installed. Also installed DirectX 9.0c (June 2010) all to no avail.
4- As referred by many people, I have checked this link: direct3D acceleration is not available in Windows 7 - Microsoft Community (look at the answer)
There is no "SoftwareOnly" registry key that I could change from 0 to 1.
5- Note that this problem persist only in 32bit Direct3D using applications NOT 64bit. The driver works well for the 64bit apps.
Now from what is stated above, it is clear that this issue caused by Intel's driver but it may also be a Windows problem too. And I think I am currently running out of options here. WDDM drivers are nice but wouldn't it be great if you could have OpenGL v1.4 along with Direct3D enabled? So I could run things like Minecraft. As a side note, a year ago I had Windows 7 32bit installed having latest Intel's drivers and with Direct3D enabled without an issue. Now this problem either could be because of Windows 8 or drivers.

I though that Windows 8.1 optimizes its settings if it detets I have an SSD
Well I did a clean install of 8.1 Pro and after I installed everything, I ran the winsat formal command in DOS so it can run WEI and do the needful
I noticed that Superfetch is still enabled/
I have 32 GB of RAM and an SSD why isn't it disabling it?
I know I can do that manually but I am wondering if it is beneficial to keep it on on my setup
This is how my RAM usage is after rebooting and leaving the system idle for 10 minutes:
On Windows 7 my RAM usage would've been much higher indicating that it is loading programs in the prefetch I'm not sure it is really doing anything on Windows 8 even though the service is active and enabled by default
