Anyways, my machine is running win7 HP with the drive bitlockered, can i just go install Windows 8 straightaway or do i have to decrypt and disable bitlocker first?
I bought an upgrade version of 8.1 Pro from my university, so I need to have an os installed before upgrading. However, I want to install it on my new PC, which means I have to install Win7 before upgrading. I wanted to know if I can install win7 and immediately install the upgrade, or is it better to go to windows update and install all the updates before upgrading?
have Acronis 2013 Plus. What I am trying to do is image the disk of a Windows 7 machine (source) to a machine that had Windows 8 pre-installed (target - Gateway SX2110G).
I connected the Windows 7 drive to the new machine (USB data cable), disabled Secure Boot, and enabled Legacy. Booted to True Image and started the cloning of the drive. Everything seemed to go ok, but as soon as it starts to boot Windows 7, it gives a 7D BSOD. (the same BSOD it gives when I simply plug the source hard drive into the target and try to boot from it).
The source HDD (win 7) boots fine in its original machine.
*I tried the startup repair that's included with the image.. does it matter if I use the one from a disc instead?
I have tried installing Win 7 in UEFI on my old Asus K56JV Laptop.
I have used a tutorial by Brink to create the bootable usb. The system can see it but after it has loaded, I get the following message:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix problem
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart 2. Choose your language setting and click next 3. click "repair your computer"
status 0xc0000225
What should I do from here?
I have tried to make the usb both manually and with rufus usb software. The system does not currently run on UEFI, but it supports it, and I have changed it in BIOS. Also I run Ubuntu in dual boot. I don't know if the GRUB interface does anything here, because the recovery will not start either, though I believe it did so last time I formatted the laptop
I am having problems installing UEFI & a Error 0x80004005 with Windows 8.1 OEM saying it can't create partitions for UEFI then creating 2 partitions for MBR installation instead. This using a 400 TB, hard drive, setup with a GPT system & nothing else & ready for Windows 8.1 to create the partitions.
The first time it happened I used MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional, to delete the partitions created by Windows 8.1 & convert the MBR to GPT, then used Wipe Disk function to erase all data and set all the bits to a 1.
The only thing that I can think is upsetting the installation is that I have left the other drives in the system including 1x3 TB drive, 1x2 TB drive and a second 4 TB drive.
The 2 TB drive has "Win 7 Ultimate" installed using MBR, the 3 TB drive is empty but ready to install Windows 8.1 setup with GPT, and the other 4 TB drive has a UEFI Windows 8.1 installed but broken.
I have also tried to install UEFI Win 8.1 on the 3 TB drive but it failed with the same error code as above.
This UEFI takes a lot to get ones head around dose't it, and me being much older than I once was makes it even harder. I have tried this installation at least 3 to 4 times now and doing these "Wipe Disk Functions" every time has so far lost me 3 whole days just in wasted time.
1st partition is Win7 SysPrep and the 2nd partition is Windows 8.1 Sysprep. I install Win7 and press Ctrl-Shift-F3 to form SysPrep, same as Windows 8.1 in 2nd partition. I made this becuase I've 25 Dell new Windows 8.1 Computer which are UEFI. I want to clone it to the other 24 Dell computers.
CASE 1 : 2 different partitions with 2 different Windows : --------------------------------------------------------------- If I install both Windows like above, when Sysprep Generalize Win7, it works fine. But if I SysPrep Generalize Windows 8.1, it's fine also, but never can boot again back to Win7. The start boot option is like this : Windows 7 Windows 8.1 If I choose to boot Windows 8.1, it's fine. If I choose to boot Windows 7, it ever boot to Windows 8.1. It means nomatter I choose to boot which Windows, it all goes to Windows 8.1 ?
CASE 2 : 1 partition for Win7 + Win81.VHD : --------------------------------------------------------------- I install Win7 (C and press Ctrl-Shift-F3 to form SysPrep. I create a Win81.VHD in Drive D: , imagex Windows 8.1 install.wim in it. Also press Ctrl-Shift-F3 to form SysPrep. Sysprep Generalize Win7 is OK , SysPrep Generalize Windows 8.1 is also OK. But after that I can only boot to Windows 7 fine, when choose to boot Windows 8.1 , it always restart and back to the boot menu ?
I had a computer with windows 7 home premium x64. A while ago I decided that I wanted to up grade to windows 8 and so I partitioned my os drive and installed (OEM) windows 8 Pro on the new partition. During the set up I was able to set up a duel boot system with windows 8 and windows 7. When I look at the drive structure I noticed that there isn't a system recovery partition for windows 7 or windows 8.
I would like to generate a system recovery partition for windows 8 and remove windows 7 but I am not sure how to go about doing this.
The method for obtaining a retail Windows 8.1 ISO has been published and re-published. It seems that most people who are interested in the ISO want to use it for a clean install. I respect that, however I want to upgrade my copy of (retail) Windows 8.0 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro.
Can I use the retail Windows 8.1 ISO to upgrade from 8.0 Pro to 8.1 Pro?
My system: Brand new Asus CM6870 desktop 2 TB HD 16 GB RAM Win 8 Core (originally installed by Asus) Motherboard; Asus P8H77-M Pro (AMI BIOS 0606) Asus did not supply and will not supply original Win 8 media
I also purchased an OCZ SSD with the intention of moving Win 8 to the SSD. The exisiting HD is installed as a UEFI device and I wanted to install Win 8 on the SSD as an UEFI device too.
I installed the SSD on port 1 of the SATA III (AHCI). In every win install attempt I had the HD disconnected. When reconnected, it was on SATA III port 2 (AHCI).
After MANY, MANY attempts, I have Win 8 installed on the SSD and the original Windows 8 remains on the HD. I was unable to to a UEFI install, so I gave up and did an MBR traditional install. When I boot to the SSD, Windows works but I can't see the HD. When I boot to the HD, Windows works but I can't see the SSD.
To make a VERY long saga, less long, I attempted the following.....- created a recovery drive to use to do a clean install on the SSD - didn't work - "found" original Win 8 Core media and used it to install on the SSD. (It worked but it was a MBR install. I tried this many times using both a DVD and a UEFI formatted USB drive using instructions found on this forum) Up to this point, any time that Win 8 was installed on the SSD, I could see the HD as a secondary drive. If I booted to the HD, I could see the SSD as a secondary drive.- I then tried to clone the system using Paragaon - it couldn't see the SSD - I then tried to clone the system using Mini Tool Partition Wizard (as recommended by OCZ) - it proceeded but failed and I got the "Starting Automatic Repair" message that froze the system. After unplugging the SSD, it booted to the HD. - Based on posts here and other forums, I read that you could use the Windows 8 Pro upgrade to do a clean install. I bought it and upgraded my HD. - The upgrade would not install on the SSD. It would only upgrade so I re-installed Win 8 Core on the SSD and then upgraded to Pro. (I had to add a PID.txt file with my upgrade licence to the upgrade disk.) After I did this, I could no longer see the secondary drive regardless of whether I booted to the HD or the SSD.- Then I re-installed Win 8 Core on the SSD to see if the Pro upgrade was the issue. - no change I looked in Device Manager and I don't see any errors but I don't see the secondary drive.
I'll attach jpgs of the Device Manager from both the SSD and the HD Win installation"
The SSD appears as unallocated on the HD Disk Manager even though Win 8 is working on that drive! The HD does not appear on the SSD Disk Manager.
I've worked on so many alternatives over the past week that I feel like I'm going around in circles.
I'll settle for a Win 8 MBR installation on the SSD with access to the secondard HD.
I have purchased window 8.1 pro DVD from a retail store please note it is complete windows DVD not an upgrade pack i want to upgrade my window 7 ultimate to win 8.1 pro with this Complete DVD and retail key provided with it, upgrading with this DVD note i don't want to lose any of my data and installed apps which are compatible.
I have Windows 7. Do I need to install Windows 8 so that I could upgrade to Windows 8.1 or can I directly upgrade to Windows 8.1 using ISO's available?
I recently went through a ton of issues with my lenovo y510p laptop and since it didn't come with a recovery disc, I was forced to reinstall windows 8 through a recovery disc on a usb stick. However, the only one I was able to get was an "evaluation version" of windows, so I've lost my original version of windows 8 after the reinstall. Is there any way to find my old key so that I can upgrade? I've tried a key finder, but it only finds the evaluation key.
Would I have to contact Lenovo to see if they can give me my product key or is there an easier way?
I've tried to upgrade from windows 8 to windows 8.1, but it didn't work. all the steps of downloading and installing through Windows store went well, until the computer restarted and was configuring things then a blue screen appeared showing that the computer ran into a problem, then the procedure to go back to windows 8 started. I'm now working with windows 8. My computer came with windows 8.
I have a laptop that has win 8 but not the Pro version. And it apparently does not have Bitlocker on it.
I have the win 8 Pro upgrade software but i think its the full version which i bought for another pc.And the upgrading instructions on the outside of the box talks about upgrading from vista or xp only.I am running win 8.
The only reason I am wanting to upgrade to win 8 Pro is to have Bitlocker.
Is it not possible to install the win 8 Pro OS?
Or is there another way of obtaining Bitlocker?
Its an acer laptop. The system info says: The system type is a "x64 based-pc" Celeron cpu 1017u 1.6 ghz,2 cores,2 logical processors, Win 8 version is 6.2.9200 build 9200
I have a small computer that is simply used for email, I want to upgrade the system from Vista to Win 8 Pro, I ran the initial upgrade assistant, and it claimed it would work on my system... I bought the upgrade, started the installation (choosing to keep all windows settings and files) and during the actual installation process, it freezes at 11%.
I know that others have asked questions like this, but I don,t have time to do a clean install, can this installation be completed without having to move all of my data from this machine?
I have been having several issues with Windows 8 (more specifically Windows 8.1).
My Toshiba U845T-S4165 has been dropping WiFi access, switching to "Limited" WiFi status, or cannot connect to my network whatsoever. The most aggravating thing is that this happens at seemingly random times and frequency. I can go a week or two with no issue and then one day I have constant problems where I can't connect after repeated tries. I have trouble-shooted everything I can and have tried some workarounds I found online. I finally contacted Toshiba and all they did was delete my network driver and redownload/reinstall it. That seemed to stabilize the problem for about 8 days or so but now I am having consistent issues.
I have read that many people started experiencing this problem after upgrading to Windows 8.1. While I can't say with absolute certainly that my problems began after upgrading, but they may have. So I am trying to revert to Windows 8. Now this would be a seemingly easy process however ignorantly and stupidly I did not create recovery media after I initially bought the laptop and built-in recovery drive has been, again stupidly, deleted during my upgrade process to 8.1. So in short, I have no recovery media.
I did find a source online that sells Windows 8 downloadable software that I can download, burn to DVD, and then start from scratch. However, I must provide my own COA. I used Belarc Advisor to find my current COA. However, this COA is associated with Windows 8.1. So my ultimate question is: Will this COA work with a Windows 8 recovery media? Did the COA change when I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1? I don't want to start this process and then get screwed midway through because my COA isn't valid when downgrading.
Before upgrading I had 4 partitions for my UEFI Windows 8 install, the main partition for the system, and the three others it created during install. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 it has reduced the main Windows partition by 472MB and created a new 472MB recovery partition.
I have not yet run any Windows 8.1 updates as the drivers for my laptop are tricky and to make everything work as it should I need to install them before running updates. What I have run is Disk Cleanup, which I had remove the old Windows install.
Is it normal for Windows 8.1 upgrade to create this new recovery partition and is it going to delete it or the old recovery partition and merge it with the main Windows 8.1 partition?
I already have a W7-Windows 8 dual boot machine.I want to upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1
Are there any major considerations I need to be aware of when upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 8.1? Does the Windows 8.1 upgrade handle and cope with an already dual-booting machine? I don't want to wreck/lose my w7 installation at all.
I have made a terrible mistake when I installed the Windows 8 90-Day evaluation. I have a 64-bit CPU (AMD 5800K) and 8GB of Ram, and I accidentally installed the 32-Bit version of the trial.
Is there any way I can upgrade without having to do a fresh re-install?
Original ACER desktop with Windows 8 and it was upgraded through the Windows Store to Windows 8.1 The upgrade came up with errors "the Secure Boot watermark".
I tried various things suggested to fix the error but was unable to.
I backed up the computer data.
I formatted the drive and installed Windows 8.1 from a thumb drive and it installed correctly without errors.
I was unable to install a Product Key Licence as the computer had it imbedded in the bios and I have no label with the key on the machine.
I should not have to purchase another licence. How do I find the original licence key?
So I'm using linux on my hp laptop where was previously windows 8. I have made backup of Windows 8 with HP recovery manager on a dvd and completely formated hdd. Now I want to install windows 8 but only on external hdd. I have tried using official windows 8 iso but it says that my key cannot be used to install retail version of Windows 8.
I already bought and installed Windows 8. I have a i7 laptop with 64bit proccessor but somewhat the company decided to pull it out with win7 32 bit OS. When I upgraded to Windows 8 I wanted to switch to 64bit but didn't find the option for that during the installation proccess. Can I do it now? switching from 32 to 64 (I understand that I will need to reinstall the windows again, I just don't wanna pay again for that).
I have an asus u43f laptop currently running windows 8 pro with a MAK. I downloaded the 8.1 pro iso from the vlsc , ran the upgrade advisor which flagged 3 items which were taken care of, but the upgrade still fails. after the reboot, I see the frown face, the a message about a driver violation, then it goes back to 8 and spits out that code.
So I have linux ubuntu on my little homemade computer and finally was able to get a copy of windows 8.1 and how to just get rid of my ubuntu machine and boot windows I'm not trying to dual boot I just want to have windows on my computer finally.
I have a Windows 8 / Vista dual boot - Windows 8 on SSD on C: and Vista on HDD on D: (data only on E: ) I have not used Vista since installing Windows 8 and now want to remove to free up some space and remove dual boot
Is there an option to keep my files on the drive but simply remove the Vista OS folder and remove the dual boot option? Or do I need to follow process here and "delete volume" and then copy all the files across again from backup?
If I do need to "delete volume" my first issue is that this option is greyed out and cannot be selected for D: drive? How can I sort this? also what do I do with 11GB recovery partition and 3.54GB OEM partition?
Right now I have an asus h61-le-CSM motherboard with EFI; it's a little older with a i3 2120 processor. On Friday I'm upgrading to a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H with a i7 processor.
Right now, I have windows 8 installed. I believe I purchased the upgrade version, although the receipt from microsoft in my e-mail has no mention of the word upgrade, it just says Windows 8 Pro. I am going to want to do a clean install with this stuff which I am capable of doing, however I don't know what I need to do to keep Windows. Will I be ok just re-entering my key?
