After updating to 8.1, windows search is slow, even though I disabled Bing and I don't have extra locations in the index, and it doesn't find files even though they are in subfolders of My Documents. This problem is very outstanding with Word files.
I tried deleting the Data folder, and rebuilding the index, but to no avail. I need a way to search for text within files, so the "Everything" app does not seem to be the solution. I am trying out AgentRansack right now, and it does work, but it is slow and uses up almost all the CPU when it is searching.
I figured out how to search but Windows 8.1 stopped searching for files. I type a word in the window and nothing happens after I hit enter.
I searched the web and suggestions say to use the charms menu but I haven't figured out how to search a thumb drive with the charms menu search.
When I insert a thumbdrive, the window opens and I type in the Search Toshiba (G) box and hit enter and nothing comes up and Windows can't find its own files on a thumb drive but it works on the C drive.
I keep turning on another computer with Windows XP to do searches or I use Windows 7 and I can get around a little.
The screen shots on the internet doesn't seem to work or relate with my system.
I know of two ways to search. Neither is working for me. Indexing service is active.
1) Using Modern UI (see screenshot)
Good : finds things including file contents
Bad : Searches cannot be saved. No advanced options like (type of data: file, outlook etc..), size, date...File types associated with Internet Explorer are opened in Modern UI IE not in Desktop IE. Every time a file is opened, the search results vanish.
2) Using Explorer (see screenshot)
Good : It has everything the Modern UI search lacks (advanced options, save searches etc.)
Bad : Doesn't find things (file content wise). For example the file in the screenshot is on my desktop. It takes minutes and then finds nothing.
I'm not sure how far reaching this is but I just noticed that when I select a folder and type a file name in the search bar on the right of the address bar, files are found on my backup drive, which is attached by USB to the PC, this drive is attached because it contains other partitions for file storage.
The folder in this case was on the desktop and it shows that it is on C: Drive, but files were found on the H: Drive which is where I run my backup to.
When I un-attach the H drive the files found do not respond to left or right click.
I was working on desktop mode and suddenly my screen went black. After about 4 seconds everything returned to normal but when I went to the Start screen all of my application tiles were missing. Except for Desktop & Store tiles, all the others had disappeared. I tried to search the missing apps and pin it to Start but it cannot be found. They wont even show in All apps.
I don't think the apps are deleted because from desktop I can open image/audio files with Photos and Music app.
Not sure if the problem maybe a result of me accidently changing the AppData folder to visible a couple of minutes earlier.
I thought that Windows 7 search was bad until I started trying to search for my many videos in my win 8 laptop. I even used KIND:= VIDEOS but the search came up empty???? This frustration never used to happen with win XP. I tried all manner of searches and although I have hundreds of videos still the search could not find a single one. Any third party search that is at least as good as XPs? I often do searches and need to use wildcards because of the plethora of files I have. If possible I would prefer a free search application.
I use the excellent Classic Shell. With my fast booting win 8 (fast booting is the only positive thing about win 8 I have encountered so far).
I want to press start key and search my software but when I do this all of files in my documents appear in results. How to set default search only in softwares and control panel?
I realised you cannot search your computer with Windows Search disabled in Windows 8/8.1 Metro, I have looked for the entry in the Windows Features / Services but could not find it. (I previously turned it off, now I cannot see the entry).
I was hoping the update from 8 to 8.1 would fix it but no luck.In a nutshell: Windows search for Files stopped working out of nowhere, searching for Apps/Settings works fine, but searching for Files yield no results, not only that, when I enter a file to search for it just sits there without any info on whether it is searching or not (Just says "Files" and nothing more where it usually would also say "Searching...").
I've been troubleshooting this but no one has had this exact problem, here are the solutions I've tried:
- Going to Indexing Options and manually adding the drives I wish to index to "Index these locations" and allowing for a full index. No results, no "Searching" phrase comes up either.
- Using Microsofts Windows Search Troubleshooter which essentially is supposed to fix problems like database corruption and crashes. Part of the fix is it resets the index (so my drives I added aren't in the list anymore), and it says it has Fixed the issues, but upon trying search: I do get the "searching" phrase, but I get very slow (about 25 seconds) and half-assed results (and only when I hit enter or click the magnifying glass icon), it's no longer a list of files in the search pane that starts to list file suggestions in the search pane. It also doesn't find folders.
Finally what I discovered today was in the Windows Features dialog box there is no Windows Search option (which I know should be there, it's on my laptop running Windows 8). I think this may be the key to all of this.
When I open Windows Explorer (Windows 8.1) the search box on upper-right corner doesn't work in the Google drive folder. It works on all other folders. That is: when I enter the name of a file inside this folder, the search returns "0 items".
My search feature isn't working. This is the main search that should start with you typing while the metro screen is up. Some time ago it just disappeared. I've tried a couple of things to get it to work, but I can't.
This is my first computer with Windows 8. When I click on the search feature on the right hand sidebar, there is an icon/title for "Files" but none of my files are showing up. If I start saving files (Word Docs, PDFs, etc) on my computer, where do I save them so they show up in this feature?
I have bought a new laptop with win 8.1. ( I would have preferred Win 7 but it only came with win 8.) This laptop is being dedicated as a paperless file storage system. I scan all my paperwork to PDF files and store in folders.
I have been trying to find a way to be able to search these PDF files, the only way I have found was to add words in the file tags. I can search OK in Win 7 but the tags do not appear in win 8.1.
Windows 8.1 upgrade. The "universal" search sucks. Control panel -disabled BING. But when I return to the search screen, and start typing, the default remains EVERYTHING. This excludes a lot of the paths FILES looks under.
Is there any way for Win 8.1 to default your search to FILES (not Everything, which excludes a lot of your index locations)?
When I tried to reset my laptop, it read "could not find the files needed". mine is an Acer aspire V5, it didn't came with an installation disc or media, i know it should have a hidden partition for recovery, but i think the system is having trouble with it. i think a malware might have done this, i got malware bytes, I tried norton online scan and eset online scan, but did not detect any. before this, i experienced my firefox browser icon on the taskbar progressing a download but cant see anything on downloads tab, i closed firefox several times, but it continued everytime i opened firefox, and it did finished its download.
Later i noticed explorer.exe is always having an established connection in TCPview, without me opening any apps. so i thought i really need to reset the computer, but this is my problem. I've already run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth restore health on command prompt, but it showed no integrity violation.
Windows8 navigation. Can not find familiar file directory to access files, instead apps and app store! Could some one direct me how I can turn off start screen and go back old fashion ways. Else I will have to go back to my Vista.
I really like windows 8 and stuff, but ive been having problems with windows 7 so i decided to install windows 8.1 and never look back, but it appears that ive had an issue for the first time ever with windows 8.x
So I was trying to make this game called blacklight retribution run on windows 8 (it crashes for some reason)
And at some point i was installing some radio apps for the metro interface and trying to play the game at the same time (my PC is pretty weak -3.1ghz AMD processor, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd and a radeon 3300 hd integrated graphics card)
So my windows 8.1 (with the latest updates) crashed with the all-cool-new-bluescreen-of-death and after that my windows store app renders its content as if its broken, here's what it looks like:
I restarted windows numerous times, but the windows store app still appears to be "broken" but other apps seem to work as they should.
I am new to windows 8 and I couldn't find a way to restore windows to an earlier point, I know a very straightforward way - reinstall windows 8.1.
Some few days ago there came a problem with my Laptop; and the problem was it starts consuming lot of battery when goes to idle mode. After Searching on internet i came to know that there is virus in My Laptop and there are only some programs which can remove it. Not even Avira, Microsoft Defender and any other. So i Just installed UnHackME software are cleaned my Windows 8.1. It worked Perfect and my problem seems to be resolved. But after removing that virus. New problem came in my Windows 8.1 and the Problem is :- When i Open Built-in Apps in my windows 8.1 Like App store, Skype, Mail, Finance, New, Health & Fitness, Weather, Calender, People, Food & Drink, Music, Games, Maps, Videos, News etc they just disappear after a single flash screen. The only apps which are in working condition are Camera, Sky drive and some apps which are created by installing some programs in my Windows 8.1.
What happens when i Open my apps :-
The app Screen Comes and after some 2-3 seconds it disappears...
What I've done so far :-
I tried to visit many communities and blogs but didn't find my problem resolved. I tried to run command sfc /scannow gave me following results after full scan Windows Resource Protection Found Corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenerios. (Problem Not resolved) I tried to run different commands in different blogs even to re-install App Store so that i can even uninstall all apps and re-install them all but .. (Problem Not Resolve)
Because i have huge collection of software installed in my Windows and being student i cannot afford to get the pain of re-installing the windows 8.1. And after some days I have exams and I've to study as well.
dad upgraded from windows 7 to 8 a few months ago and selected to keep his old files (i.e. pictures, vids, so on) now we cant find his old files. I have gone to the windows.old file and there are files there but they all say that they are empty. everything else seems to be fine but we cant find all of his vacation pictures or other media that he really was not wanting to lose.
I have been using a PC for over ten years and, at best, I am still a novice! I am experiencing a lot of issues I had overcome with Win7. I will address thes one at a time. In the past when I was looking for a folder or file I pressed START and keyed in what I was looking, a name or unique words. How do I do that using Windows 8.1?
I recently purchased a new laptop (Windows 8), we put the hard disk from my old slow laptop (win XP) that stopped working into a "sata enclosure". When I attached it, I cant find my personal files. Its like the space is taken up but my important files cant be seen!! All that comes up on the hard disk enclosure drive (F is: recovery, swwork, windows, and preboot folders... and a recov.wim file. I even ran "Search" but still cant find my documents or anything...
