I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with XP Home. When PC boots up, it gets as far as the Windows XP startup screen with the line top and bottom and thats it! no login names are displayed or anything. Mouse moves and KB is not locked. ctrl-alt-del does not display the login page either. I tried in safe mode with same results.

Plus, I've tried: Start?Run?type ?mmc? (without quotes)?File?Add/Remove snapin?click the Add button?select Group Policy?click Add?click Finish?click Close?click OK?expand Local Computer Policies?expand User Configuration?Administrative Templates?WindowsComponents?Windows Explorer and disable "Turn on Classic Shell". That does not seem to work, as I cannot do anything right at Group Policy. It seems as though Group Policy is nowhere to be found. I also tried downloading a .reg file which is suppose to "restore all display tabs" and it did not work.

The problem is that it seems at some point that some kind of update was interrupted during the process and the system will not load unless a windows xp professional edition disk is inserted to complete the update. I also cannot get it to start in safe mode. Unfortunately, I only have a home edition disk. Can I reformat XP pro with a home edition disk? If not, are there any other options?

These folders appear on all of my drives c:, d:, g: and they are random. It looks like they are of another language, maybe? Actually, the wording makes no sense at all...> It looks like most of these folders previously existed.
Things I have done: Ran Anti-V program + Ewido Suite = No viruses, trojans, malware, etc. Ran three adware programs (ad-aware, spywareblaster, spyware doctor) = Clear. Checked all running processes and startup tab in mscofig = no peculiar programs detected. Ran regseeker = Phenominal amount of invalid keys, etc. (3,000+) very unusual to the norm!!!
my vaio (2 x 1GB RAM) has an Intel i945PM Chipset which supports a max of 4GB RAM. But from what I've read only 3-3.5GB can be addressed. So I just bought a 2GB stick to replace one of my 1GB sticks. Current config is: 1x2GB and 1x1GB.After booting, BIOS displays the 3GB and a Linux boot-cd was able to test the whole 3GB as working. My problem is the following: XP boots but blacks out on the login UI! Safe Mode does the same thing. But the hard-drive keeps processing though.If I remove the 1x1GB stick, then booting is normal. How can I fix that login UI with the 3GB of RAM in place?

View 43 Replies View RelatedAnyway, when upgrading from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Pro earliler this week, everything seemed to work fine and all the program icons I had from Windows XP Home appeared on the XP Pro desktop. However, my Internet Broadband/Dial-Up connection dissapeared from 'Network Connections' and I therefore could not connect to the internet, even though the ISP ('BT Broadband' - I'm based in the UK in case you wonder who BT are) icon remained on my desktop and their software appeared in Programs.
When I contacted my ISP they claimed this is a problem with Windows XP upgrade to Pro and I should contact Microsoft Support. Is this true?
Anyway, I've had to resort to doing a clean install of Windows XP Home again now in order to get back on the internet with my Broadband internet and installing my ISP's USM Modem software all over again. It worked, but still want to upgrade to XP Pro.
Any ideas on how this 'problem' can be resovled. Don't want to have to do a clean install again and again. Also, is It this a common problem with upgrading to Windows XP Pro from Windows XP Home as my ISP claim ?
Should I install SP2 on my XP home edition on my laptop? is this fine or are there problems related and or is it even neccesary.

When I try to start in normal mode, it goes to the windows xp loading screen with the green loading bar and then goes blank, with my moniter blinking on and off. a checkdisk in safe mode returns no errors. the only things plugged into the motherboard are my cd drive and a video card.

If so, is there a way to uninstall sp2 and sp1 so its just plain home edition so i can register it?and if not, is it even possible to get it registered with my old key if i contact microsoft? I have made a list of programs to make sure I can put them back on and I also have my entire hard drive backed up on an external hard drive so I can transfer my important files back over. My question is what all do I need to get the system to work again. I have the Win XP Home instalation disk as well as the driver disk from dell. Will the computer automaticaly start using the two CD drives and 3.5 drive or do I need drivers for them as well? Sorry if this is a rookie question. I just want to make sure once I wipe it out I am all set to get it back up and running. The reason I decided to do this now is that I have a few spyware and viruses that I am having trouble getting off. They arnt doing anything because of my firewall and other settings. I just want to wipe it off and start over with a clean slate.
