Can't Boot From EFI Mode After Do Some Change In Original MSDN Win 8 ISO

Nov 24, 2012

I just added the ei.cfg file into my original MSDN ISO by UltraISO, saved the modification and burned the ISO to DVD disc afterwards, but now I discovered that it didn't give me an option to boot from EFI mode. only legacy mode works.

Dual Boot - Remove Original Windows 7 OS And Keep Windows 8

May 30, 2014

How do you safely remove Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) from a dual boot with Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit)

I'm quite happy with Windows 8.1 Pro alone

The scenario:

Both are on the same hard drive (a SATA).

Windows 7 was on the hard drive initially. I installed Windows 8.1 on a new partition (which i made from shrinking the Drive C:)

But since Windows 7 was the original operating system, I had some concern about losing the Master Boot

Record(bootloader configuration data) that Windows 7 had established on the drive.

To address this, best I found : [URL] .....

Here's a screenshot of my disk management ...

Change PC Settings Does Not Work In Audit Mode?

Mar 1, 2013

I'm an IT pro and I'm in the process of creating Windows 8 Pro (64-bit) images for my workplace using audit mode (i have done this countless times on windows 7). The problem is, the 'Change PC settings' button does NOT work when I click on it in audit mode. Nothing happens at all, the charms bar just slides away as it should, and then....nothing.

Heres what I'm doing:

1. Installing Windows 8 using our (MAK) dvd on my base image PC (Dell Optiplex 780). This is a CLEAN install on a wiped hard disk using verified installation media.

2. I Press Ctrl-SHift-F3 at the 'Personalize' screen to launch audit mode

3. The system logs in as it should with the built-in admin account

At this stage, Windows is not yet activated. The change PC settings button does not work.

I then:

4. Activate Windows 8 using the 'slui 3' command to input my volume product key. This activates OK.

5. I reboot to complete activation

6. I verify in system settings that windows IS activated.

The 'change pc settings' button still does not respond at this stage (nothing happens at all, no errors etc). And this is with ZERO changes to the PC.

Attempted Workarounds

For the record, I have tried countless things in a bid to fix this, including but not limited to:

* put the resolution to 1024x768 (as some forums recommended) - 'change PC settings' still not working.

* installing ALL available windows updates (before activation, after activation etc) - 'change PC settings' still not working.

* updated the PC bios and tried again - 'change PC settings' still not working.

* I have created new local accounts (admin and non admin) just to test it using the new accounts, and that doesnt work either.

* I have wiped the disk and attempted complete wipe and reinstalls countless times (and on 3 different models of PC), with the same result. 'change PC settings' still not working.

* tried countless possible fixes found in forums all over the web - none of which worked.

I have done all this and more, countless times, and in countless different orders to try and beat this thing, but to no avail.

Can't Get Into Windows Boot Manager To Change Boot Order

Feb 22, 2014

My Dell Inspiron 660 is 2 months old. It came with Windows 8 preinstalled. My problem: I am trying to change the boot order so I can boot from CD ROM as a first option. I have tried using the "F" keys on boot, but it just ignores me and goes on to boot up. I have also tried the "Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings" in "Change PC Settings" and got the same results. I spent some time on the phone with a Dell tech. After trying all the things I had already tried, he and his supervisor decided I must have a bad Motherboard. Does this sound right? Is there any way to repair this problem?

BIOS Boot Order Change - Windows 8.1 Does Not Boot?

Apr 27, 2014

.I have an HP Pavilion Slimline PC desktop. It does not allow me to boot from CD/DVD drive or USB connection. Windows 8.1. I wish to be able to use the boot options cd/dvd and all the USB options. I can't use any of the options. I list bios setup options and suggestions given to me from articles but I'm not sure I'm afraid of error. I don't have that much experience in bios setup.

Articles have said in BIOS setup Security is to be disabled. I suppose Legacy remains disabled(?). It is suggested that I shutdown and reboot.

BIOS Setup > Storage > Boot Order has this list:
UEFI Boot Sources
Windows Boot Manager
USB Floppy/CD[code]....

At bottom of this Boot Order Window are the options: F5=disable Enter=drag F10=accept ESC=cancel

Windows Boot Manager at the the top stops all other options.beneath it. How does that 'drag' work. Don'tr I have to move 'Windows Boot Manager' to the bottom?

And move ATAPI CD/DVD drive to the top? of this UEFI boot sources list?

Is it true that if there is an error in the BIOS Boot Setup and Windows 8.1 does not boot, the BIOS Setup will come up instead so one can do a fix?

How do I do this upgrade using the MSDN bits available? I would really prefer to not to a clean install if I can avoid it because the bump to 8.1 pro has to be minimal from an upgrade point of view.

How To Change Boot Order So Can Boot Win 8.1 From DVD

Mar 15, 2014

I'm trying to boot Windows 8.1 from DVD (for Nero backitup.) . I can get to the advanced settings option and even to the UEFI option. Once I get tothe UEFI restart the computer shuts down and then just sits there - power light on - but nothing on the screen. The screen stays asleep(?) if that is what you would call it.

I'm on an Acer Aspire AT3-605_ES20 desktop. They had an instruction to hit "delete" at the Aspire logo during boot. But I don't get an Aspire logo - it just starts up to the Windows log in screen. I turned off "fast startup". How I can change my boot order so I can boot from DVD?

Accounts :: Restore User Folders To Original Location?

Nov 16, 2013

I had the idea of redirecting my User/Tom/Documents' folder to SkyDrive/Documents on both my desktop and laptop using the Properties/Location tab to keep everything in sync. Turns out that with all the folders various applications create in 'Documents', this creates a lot of clutter, so I wanted to restore the 'Documents' folder back to its original location and just sync my genuine documents using SkyDrive. However, upon attempting this, I'm met with the message "can't move the folder because there is a folder in the same location that can't be redirected". How can I get around this? I have tried doing the action in safe mode but to no avail, the same message once again.

Print Preview Colour Does Not Match To Original Image

Jun 30, 2013

Overview: My print preview colour does not match the original image colour.

This has been true since buying this Toshiba with Windows 8 preinstalled. Prior to Win 8 I had a machine with Win 7, and used Spyder4express, and SpyderPRINT for my colour management with no issues. I've recently installed and calibrated my Win 8 machine to try to fix the fact that all prints are off colour and cold, and to maybe fix that in print preview, the print won't match the saved image. Calibrating hasn't worked. Btw, my print matches the preview, but I want it to match the saved file that I've worked on.

Here's a screenshot, the smaller image should be the same as the larger image in the background! Whether I try to print from Photoshop, Word, Lightroom, Photo Viewer, or Windows Explorer, the colour never matches the saved image.

Windows 8.1 Won't Boot Even Into Safe Mode?

Jan 6, 2014

I can't boot into Windows 8.1 at all or even safe mode..I have tried startup repair etc etc ....I also tried the bcdedit trick to boot directly into Safe mode with the command prompt option no dice either..I would rather not do a refresh or reset pc..Matter of fact I have tried both options and even with a clean 8.1 disk I can't ....It gives me the error message remove cd or media and restart no matter whether i have the disk on or not. i think it might be a problem with the boot or something or its booting to the wrong device perhaps a USB ? i do have bitlocker on the drives and when i got to do a startup repair it asks for my key and i obv have it on other media which is my usb which won't read the key from it anymore..

How To Boot Windows In Verbose Mode

Nov 7, 2013

My windows 8 installation decided to go into automatic repair mode without warning and now all I get is a black screen after the blue windows logo at boot. It does the same thing with onboard gfx or the Radeon card so I doubt it's graphics driver issues.

I'm more of a mac guy these days and If I run into trouble I can either boot in verbose mode or consult the console to get a readout of what's going on behind the scenes and track down the problem and fix it.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like if you can't boot windows 8, the only choice is to re-install?

f8 or shit/f8 does absolutely nothing.

Tablets :: How To Boot Into Safe Mode

Sep 11, 2013

SVF1521P2EB from PC world.Trying to use a recovery program I always use for all my laptops and desktops and have created a bootable USB Stick and also a DVD bootable disk. Both disk and usb work on all other systems but this Sony Laptop.

Have USB stick in the usb2 port not the usb3 port due to compatibility issues with backup/restore on usb3. The stick is a usb2. I have gone into bios and set usb and also tried dvd as first boot device. Will not boot.

Have tried the assist button on the laptop and the restore (boot from dvd/usb media) also does not work, as stated these both work on other laptops and desktops.

I have tried to find the boot option menu or safe mode startup. I have tried this by pressing various buttons each time on boot usually F2, Del, esc, F12, F10 on other systems and also F8 which does not appear to enable the laptop to start with a manual boot.

All I seem to achieve is the Vaio screen and straight to Windows8.

I do see the sony recognise the usb as the green light is flashing, no message of boot failure.

1) What is the boot option at startup to manually select a boot device.

2) How to boot into safe mode.

3) How to possibly rid the boot up screen displaying the VAIO logo.

4) Get the Sony to recognise either the bottable dvd or usb to backup the system without using the sony or built in miscrosoft bootup.

Final result should be a full image backup of the hard drive ona an extarnal harddrive/usb stick for future restoration.

No Login Screen When Boot Even In Safe Mode?

Aug 21, 2014

One day, I rebooted, and then there was nothing. After Windows finished loading, there was naught but a black screen, and a cursor if I move the mouse quickly. This happens in safe mode as well, and on both my dedicated graphics card (an Asus AMD HD 6450 Silent) and my integrated graphics (Other than it is a Biostar A780L3G). When I try to refresh directly, with a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 installation media, it says it is invalid, despite it being x64, same as the installed version. When I try directly, it says the HDD is locked, and none of the guides I have followed to unlock it through the disk work. Also, I dont know if this matters or not, but when I try booting into safe mode, at first, when I move the mouse, in the corners, it says Safe Mode.
