X64 Vista Ultimate To Win 7 Ultimate Upgrade Fails
I addressed all compatibility issues by uninstalling the software that it didn't like and downloaded the 3gig 64bit upgrade ISO. After it ran for a few hours and moved to what appeared to be the final stages - it rebooted. I found the screen hung right after the spinning MS logo displaying "starting windows" (or similar verbage). I gave it some time... moved the mouse, pressed spacebar, unplugged an external drive, and nothing made the silent HDD act up.
Left with no other choice I killed it and rebooted. When it got to the same place it paused... but then informed me the upgrade was not successful, previous version of windows being restored, do not restart.Any advice on where to start here?

Vista Ultimate X64 To Win 7 Ultimate X64 In Place Upgrade Issue
I have, twice now, tried to do an in place upgrade from Windows Vista x64 Ultimate to Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Vista is pretty much fully patched up to date, and Windows 7 is RTM and is choosing the option to download the latest updates for install. Both times it has taken about 11 hours to work through most of the phases of the upgrade, and then apparently hang in the transferring setting stages. It has hung at exactly the same point each time: 458886 of 607131 (for some strange reason, it reports this as 62%). The "hang" is not absolute, which is to say that all the rotation of "please wait..." messages continues, so it's not a totally lockup. That said, I let it be for about 8 hours the first time with no changes, and a whopping 35 hours last time (about 46 hours of total time with the upgrade running) - again without any change. Since there is no option to cancel, I was forced to shut down both times, and the rollback has taken perhaps a half hour. There are, of course, several questions to come out of this, but the primary one is "Where is the log?", and how can I determine what the heck it was working on when it decided to go away. Frankly, the idea that someone would RTM this when I'm hearing that a 5 hour in place upgrade is "fast", and it can take as long as 85 hours seems a bit more than ridiculous, but I'm doing my best to go with the flow.

Unable To Upgrade Vista Ultimate X64 To Win 7 Ultimate X64
I tried to upgrade from Vista Ultimate x64 to Windows 7 Ultimate x64. This is supposed to be a supported path for an in-place upgrade. When choosing Upgrade from Setup I get the following message: Windows Vistaâ„¢ Ultimate cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You'll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”. I have run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and uninstalled any application or driver that reported problems. The only application left with a warning is Visual Studio 2008. Everything else is reported as compatible (green check mark). In fact, the Upgrade Advisor indicates that an in-place upgrade is available as an option. I haven't been able to find anyone else with this issue and there is nothing else pointing me in the right direction to resolve this. Has anyone seen this before and/or found a work-around.

Stardock Preventing Upgrade From VISTA Ultimate To Win 7 Ultimate
Doing an upgrade from VISTA Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate. Got error that it could not upgrade because Window Blinds 6.0 or earlier was installed. I uninstalled Window Blinds via the STardock user interface and still get the error messages. Cleaned out the registry of any Stardock or Window Blinds reference. Removed any traces of both programs from the drive. Still get the error message and it won't upgrade. Any ideas? I've check Stardock support with no luck.

BSOD During Upgrade From Vista Ultimate To Win 7 Ultimate
I've tried to upgrade from Vista Ultimate 32 bit to 7 Ultimate 32 bit numerous times now, all with the same result: a BSOD during the install process, which I get during (what I think is) the final step called "Transferring files, settings and programs." The installation compatibility test warns me about my Nvidia drivers, which I've attempted to both remove and upgrade to the latest version, but that doesn't seem to make a difference (I still get the warning during the compatibility check, and I still get the blue screen). I'm not sure that's even the problem, either. I can't (easily) remove/replace the video card, since my mobo doesn't have onboard video, so I'd hopefully be able to avoid having to do that. The error in the blue screen is a nebulous "REFERENCE_BY_POINTER" message. The technical information is "STOP: 0x00000018 (0x00000000, 0x86478030, 0x00000002, 0xFFFFFFFF)." As a zip file, I've attached the setup log, error log, compatibility report, and what I think is the setup dump file, all of which I found in C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanther (I believe that's the right place to look). The logs complain about BthMig problems, which I think has something to do with bluetooth, but I don't have any bluetooth peripherals. I've uninstalled things that I thought might have some bluetooth things in it, like MS Intellitype (maybe a stretch), but again, no difference. System specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, on an Asus M2N SLI Deluxe, with 4 GB of ram, and an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT. The hard drive I'm installing (upgrading) on has about 100 GB free.

I heard that an in-place upgrade to Windows 7 is only possible within the same language (e.g. EN-US). Now I worry that I'll buy the wrong Win 7 version.I know that my current Vista Ultimate is English, but how to find out which one (could be British as well)? Ist there a native OS language at all besides the language I set in the "regional and language options" in the control panel?And is this important at all? As far as I know Windows 7 Ultimate supports 35 languages, so does it matter at all as long as I accept to install Win 7 in the same language like my Vista is?Sorry, maybe I'm a bit confused *ggg*.

Issue With Win 7 Ultimate Upgrade From Vista Ultimate
I upgraded one of our test laptops from Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, I had a couple of issues installing the straight upgrade. The last issue I have is that during the update I was never prompted for a key, now when I go to the Control Panel/System I see that I have 27 days for the windows activation, however when I click on the Activate Windows now or If I click on the change product Key link under the Windows Activation page the O.S does nothing. I do have 3 licensed keys but the system does not even prompt me to enter any key. I also booted in safe mode and was unable to change the key. I've also run repair from the installation CD, does anyone know how to solve this issue or how to change the key in any other way..

Vista Ultimate To Win7 Ultimate RTM Upgrade: Incompatible App Removal Error
Disk copy of Vista Ultimate used for upgrade attempt. First upgrade attempt identified several issues with apps needing to be uninstalled. First removed Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, but deferred reboot to complete, until rest of problem apps were uninstalled. After reboot, restarted upgrade install with check compatability online test (Win7 Upgrade Advistor Beta) - no problems found. Then, "install now" option taken: completed temp file copy, setup started, accepted option for "go online for latest updates...", accepted license terms, then, very quickly received the following "Check Compatability" errors: Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing. For these items, make the following changes: Uninstall these programs. Open Control Panel and search for "uninstall a program". Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 - Examination of registry and installed programs and features list shows no sign of uninstalled app.

Vista Ultimate Upgrade To Win7 Ultimate Failing At Last Reboot
I've attempted to upgrade a machine 3 times as indicated. During the final reboot to Win 7 all appears fine until I get to a screen stating that the upgrade failed and the previous version will be restored. The restore works fine. The machine is dual core box with 2GB RAM. The upgrade advisor indicates no problems bar the fact that Ultimate Extras will no longer be available. I'm running setup from the d: drive (rather than CDROM drive). Unfortunately the process gives no indication as to why the upgrade has failed. Where can I find upgrade logs and what should I look for?

Win 7 RC Install Over Vista Ultimate SP1 Fails At First Reboot
I've now tried several times to install the Windows 7 RC over Vista Ultimate SP1. Each time, the install fails after it gathers files with a message that says setup was unable to reboot the system. The only choice is to cancel setup and start over. The process begins at the beginning, and it takes forever, and fails at the same point, so I'm giving up unless someone can point me to specific information. My machine is a Dell XPS with 4 GB of RAM and an ATI Catalyst video card; everything is up-to-date in Vista Ultimate.

Just wanted to state that I encountered the "stuck" issue as well, but on my machine it was stuck at 32% for hours on a machine with over 1 million files. I powered down my machine and it restarted in Vista with no problem, although there were three new folders obviously created during the upgrade to hold installation files. I've deleted those folders.I was unable to find a log file that might indicate the file(s) which were causing the "stuck" condition. NOTE TO MICROSOFT: It would be GREAT if you could provide more on-screen feedback about what specific file or setting is being migrated, and some onscreen indication of the location of a log file (if it exists) where one could go to find out how far the process went. You display every file as it is installed in Visual Studio. Why be so obscure during the upgrade process in Windows 7?In my case, I've been testing Win7RC in a separate partition via dual-booting. I zapped that partition and did a clean install of Windows 7 RTM, which went off without issue. I've been re-installed my programs (a pain, but I'll only put on what I need). In the meantime, I've still got my Vista partition to boot up in if I need anything there.

Unable To Upgrade From Vista 32 Ultimate To Windows 7 Ultimate
When upgrading from windows vista 32 ultimate 2nd edition to windows 7 ultimate upgrade the upgrade proceeds through the transfer of the files and programs with no problems but when the 4th process of the installation is reached namely expanding windows files, at 21% the process stops and apparently requires a restart. When the computer restarts I recieve the message that this computer is being shut down to prevent damage, I presented this problem to the Windows 7 technicians and spent many hours on the phone and was told eventually that the problem was in my hard drive and that I would need outside help to correct this problem as they were not trained in such problems. I have a raid 5 configured hard drive consisting of 4 Seagate Barracuda 500GB for a total of 2 T. I hae used this HD for at least 3 years to run Vista 32 with no problem and am currently back using Vista 32 ultimate. I assembled this computer from components as I have done with 5 other computers.I would appreciate any help that can be given me by the forum and would supply any further information that might be needed such as the components that are in this computer and what I had done before attempting Windows 7 ultimate uograde

I am a bit confused about "We would like to inform you that the upgrade should be done without a problem. Windows 7 ultimate supports Danish aswell we do not have Danish version." When I try to do the upgrade, I get this message : "You can't do a typical upgrade using an installation disc that's different from the language installed on your computer. Go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings. " The upgrade then stops.Ultimate supports Danish as well but there is not Danish version. Vista X64 To Win 7 X64 Upgrade Fails
I have tried upgrading my Vista Hope Premium X64 system to Windows 7 Home Premium X64 system many times in the past few days and I am having a problem with the process aborting. I am running an Acer Aspire x1200 with 4GB of ram. System is running fine on Vista but I wanted to upgrade my home network with Windows 7 for ease of use. I have run the Upgrade Advisor and the only thing it flags is the NVIDIA nForce System Management Controller with a status of Unknown and "We don't have compatibility information about this device". I have checked and the driver is up to date. When I run the migration, I run in an update mode. It runs for about 4 hours. When it gets to the "Transferring files, settings, and programs (62%)" point, it sits there for about an hour while it moves thousands of Sun cache files. This appears to finish normally. I then get a screen that says "Setup will continue after restarting your computer". I then get the Windows Logo screen. The next screen says "Setup is starting services". Next, the process continues with the "Transferring files, settings, and programs" at the (63%) point which seems to indicate that things are going forward. Next comes the BSOD. "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. The technical information on the screen: *** STOP: 0x0000003B (0x00000000C000001D, 0xFFFFF88006277D30, 0xFFFFF880054C5EC0, 0x0000000000000000) . It then states that it is collecting data for a crash dump. At this point, to MS credit, the process rolls back to my Vista system and I am able to have my system back in an operational manner. I have disconnected all of my USB devices except for my wireless mouse. I ran scans to get rid of any spybots and ad-bots before I started the migration. I turned my McAfee security software off before starting the migration. I have the latest Vista updates applied. All of my other software is up to date.

Fail Upgrade To Win7 Ultimate RTM 32 Bit From Vista Ultimate 32 Bit
I just tried the upgrade from Vista 32bit Ultimate to Windows 7 32 Ultimate. Several issues occurred. First the install uses an incorrect version of jraid.sys (I suspect it may be a 64 bit version from what I have read on various posts). After copying the files the system reboots and fails as the jraid.sys file is corrupt or wrong version. I booted the Vista load and copied the Vista version of jraid.sys from windowssystem32drivers to $Windows.~BTwindowssystem32drivers and the system reboots Windows 7 and continues the install process. As it gets to the final stage, I get a message that the upgrade has failed (with no other info) and a rollback to Vista occurs. the $Windows.~BTsources ollback folder has a setupact.log file that details the roll back but the setuperr.log file is empty. Any suggestions?

Upgraded Vista Ultimate To Win7 Ultimate RTM Ok, But Boot Screen Is Still Vista's
I got my copy of Win & Ultimate and a legal key from TechNet, did an upgrade of my Vista Ultimate computer. All went well and other than my new copy of Norton Internet Security 2009 not working (long story for another thread). The problem I'm having is that the boot screen (Starting Windows with the 4 colored balls and the windows logo) did not change, I still have the old Vista one with the boring green progress bar. I never dual booted this system and I have tried the fixes out on the net - using an administrator command prompt to send: bcdedit /set {current} locale en-US or bcdboot %WinDir% /l en-US Neither one worked. This is not a fatal flaw, but it is annoying in an otherwise perfect upgrade. Is there a registry setting I can change or another fix to try for this? It used to be easy to change the boot screen in XP and not too hard in Vista, how do I get my correct boot screen back in Windows 7?

I recently tried to upgrade mc PC to the RC1...I got about 90% done and then I got the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). At this point, the installation stopped and reinstalled all of my previous Vista files. I tried the installation again and got the same BSOD; unfortunately, I wasn't able to capture the BSOD in order to determine what the cause was. What are my options? Am I stuck with Vista?

I am currently running Windows Vista Ultimate OEM 64 bit as my main operating system. I am thinking of upgrading to WIN 7 Professional because of the discounted upgrade available. (In Canada WIN 7 Pro upgrade is $125.00) I do not need the multi-language or Bit-Locker features of the Ultimate version of WIN 7. However, I do need the Fax program and Windows Media Center.
