Video Problem On Dell Studio XPS 1640

I have two Dell Studio XPS 1640s, one with the 3670 and one with the 4670 video cards. Both machines are dual boot - XP Pro (32 bit) or Windows 7 x64. In XP all types of video play perfectly well. In Windows 7 x64, on both machines, playing video in a large window or full screen produces visible horizontal blocks or tears which become very obvious during action scenes or with horizontal panning.

That there is no problem in XP means it isnt an intrinsic hardware/BIOS/firmware problem.
The 4670 machine has the A10 BIOS which was supposed to improve video function but the problem is still very apparent and upgrading the 3670 machine from A06 to A10 made no obvious difference.
I have the latest drivers and have tried both Dell's and AMDs latest and over several versions these have made no difference. Perhaps unfortunately I removed Vista from these machines on arrival and dont know whether this occurs in Vista or not.

I wondered about a codec problem but the same problem occurs with VLC media player or media player classic even with ffdshow intalled and apparently working (although telling what codec is actually being used is rather difficult, I find).

Has anyone else noticed this and does anyone have a solution?

USB Problems With Dell Studio XPS 1645 Notebook
I have a Dell Studio XPS 1645 notebook with Core i7 processor, Intel PM55 chipset (brand new chipset model 5/3400) 4GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate x64. My USB storage device hangs and disconnects intermittently, while my Logitech G5 Gaming Laser Mouse hangs and the pointer then slows down until it is reconnected or system reboots, and I lose all my custom preset mouse speed/resolution configurations (it has buttons to adjust speed).

Is this the same or similar to the problem users had on nVidia chispets? I tried everything to fix it include fresh reinstall of Windows 7, and I lost all the stuff Dell preinstalled on this new system because of it. Should I try the nVidia hotfix?

Failing Dell Dell XPS 720 64 Bit RAID Drivers
I have been trying, for the last 2 days, to install Win 7 (64 bit) to my Dell XPS 720. I performed the pre-install check and it reported no problems. As I was going from Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit I knew I would have to perform a clean install.

I have installed about 6 times over the last couple of days and the system seems fine for maybe 20 minutes at which point one of two things happens. either

1. it reboots after a brief blue screen message regarding BAD_POOL_HEADER (too quick to read)

2. it hangs and performs a dump with a BSOD regarding NVSTOR.SYS

I'm assuming that the problem is with the NVSTOR.SYS driver(s) for the motherboard NVIDIA RAID arrays. I have 4 disks in 2 RAID 0 arrays of a 1TB each.

Dell does not list the PC as Win 7 compatible and there are no Windows 7 64 bit RAID drivers listed although it does list Vista 64 bit drivers as a download. I have tried these but Windows 7 doesn't seem to want to update the driver saying I already have the latest drivers installed (from the Windows 7 DVD).

Anyone else had this problem and been able to cure it. I'm writing this from the PC with the 32 bit version installed and working fine. I need 64 bit to address the 8gb of memory for some very intensive video and photoshop work I do.

Drivers For Dell Studio
Just after the October 22 release date, Dell posted some new graphics and other drivers for Windows 7. How can I tell whether they are needed, or should I assume that Windows Update takes care of making sure the latest drives are installed?

Dell Studio 1555 Problems
Last night I uninstalled my display driver for my Dell Studio 1555 via device manager for Windows 7 Ultimate 64. I rebooted and then proceeded to install the 9.10 package from AMD's website for my Radeon 4570.  The file extracted fine, then the install manager came up.  I selected English and another window came up with the option to install or uninstall.

I choose "install" and it then disappears and a Windows error window comes up saying that it didn't properly install and has compatibility mode has been enabled for the next run (which did nothing and yes, I did download the correct 64 bit Win7 version).

Dell Studio 1535 Drivers
Ive got a Dell Studio 1535 running Windows Vista.

I want to upgrade to Windows 7, used the Upgrade Advisor, no problem.

The only thing I need before I want to install Win 7 are the drivers.

HOWEVER Dell hasnt got any drivers suitable for my PC!

When I go to the download page, it only gives 2 options:

-> Windows Vista 32 bit

-> Windows Vista 64 bit

What am I to do?

I really want to upgrade, but if the drivers are missing, my PC wont work!

Do the vista drivers work for 7 as well?

Dell Studio 1737 Laptop
Installed 7 RC on a Dell Studio 1737.

First wrote the files from the ISO on a bootable USB stick.

Installation went flawless.

All hardware worked OK. Then installed the bluetooth package from the Dell Vista CD => also worked OK. Tested with a bluetooth wireless speaker.

Webcam application from Dell also installed from the Dell CD and working.

First time also that I installed AVG (the 30 day trial as Symatec only release a beta which works 14 days). Also AVG works fine, except that it ocasionnaly seems to create a temporary slowdown.

Performance in general is better than Vista.

A couple of freeware utilities would not install with a message saying that the application is not fit for the OS. Then ran the installer in compatibility mode and it worked.

So far so good.

I would have liked the classic start menu but that is probably just because I was so used to it. An extra toolbar in the taskbar does gives almost same functionality except that you have to copy the shortcuts of your favorite apps to a folder.

Upgrade On Dell Studio 1737
I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and I'm so tempted to go back to Vista...if anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

I have the Dell Studio 1737. Since I've upgraded to Windows 7...my CD/DVD driver barely works, the finger reader doesn't work, webcam doesn't work...and now I can't view video files...the web goes to 'not responding'. I have updated my Flash, that did nothing.

Any ideas?

Upgrade On Dell XPS 13
I just upgrade my laptop dell studio xps 13 from vista home to windows 7 home premium.  The upgrade went smooth and seemed to have no problem finding drivers.  However I am having some strange problems: can't adjust speaker volume, stays at max; can't adjust mouse pointer speed, stays at min; can't control scroll bar on start menu; and the screen will not power down as set by power options.  Not sure if anything else yet but Internet explorer seems to work fine. Is it possible that this machine is not compatible with windows 7.

I ran the setup on the windows 7 disk and did a reinstall upgrade

Missing Drivers Dell Studio 1535
Today, my copy of Windows 7 Ultimate finally arrived! Installation was no problem and most of the drivers are installed. However, I still miss a few.

I miss:

Name: A base system device

Developer: unknown

Location: PCI-bus 3, device 1, function 3

Name: Unknow device

Developer: unknowm

Location: on Intel(R) ICH8M LPC Interface Controller - 2815

Windows automatically installed all the other drivers.

But I cannot find any driver for the devices listed above.

Does somebody know where I can find them?

Missing Dell Studio 1535 Drivers
Its been about 2 week since I installed Windows 7.

I love the new OS but I am still missing some drivers!!!

I tried to contact Dell, and this was their answer:

"You need to download the Windows 7 drivers"

Like I dont know...

But there are still no Windows 7 drivers on the Studio 1535 driver download page.

This is the information Windows gives me:

Name: A base system device

Developer: unknown

Location: PCI-bus 3, device 1, function 3

Name: Unknow device

Developer: unknowm

Location: on Intel(R) ICH8M LPC Interface Controller - 2815

I read something about Ricoh drivers or something like that, but I cannot find any solution... One of the missing drivers listed above is for the remote control (i think)

Dell Studio Hybrid Randomly Reboots
I am having issues with my Dell Studio Hybrid after I did a brand new clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate RC1 64-Bit and have not installed any programs or any drivers because Windows 7 already has it compatible so the problem is my computer randomly reboots itself continuously after startup even before five minutes and no blue screen error message and windows action center does not even catch the problem or collect any information even after I power on the computer (so strange).

Someone please help me. I have tried installing all of the Windows Update and they go through fine. I was using Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit with SP2 before and have had no issues with this system. I wanted to try Windows 7 badly.

I checked the event viewer and it mentioned 4 critical and it said "Kernel power and I created an error report log and it sent the report to Microsoft and Dell so hopefully someone will research and fix the problem asap and get a solution back. I really believe this is a driver or software related bug and can be easily resolved with a Windows Update when available. I have detailed Event Viewer information below:

General: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Event ID: 41
Task Category: (63)

Dell Studio 17 Invalid Product Key
Brand new dell studio 17 with Windows 7 home premium (1 month) now shows invalid product key and I can't activate it. I have a brand new laptop from dell (studio 17 - 64bit) with Windows 7 home premium which was working fine for about a month.

Now the machine tells me I have an non-genuine version of Windows 7 and when I try to activate it, it tells me I have to buy a new license? Any ideas and yes, I know I can slmgr -rearm, but it's a legal copy and dell says it's M/S's problem.

Dell Xps M140 Laptop
Dell Inspiron XPS M140 - Pentium M 1.86 GHz - 14.1 " - 512 MB Ram - 60 GB HDD-Hardware Infomation and Computer Tutorials

Here is a link to my laptop specs. Never understood why Dell never released video drivers compatible with anything above xp for this device, which was purchased new in 2006. I have the system running with windows 7, and device manager reports no problems with any devices, but experience rating gives it a 1.0 for graphic, which I am thinking cannot be the case.

This thing had a decent graphics card when it was released, and plays semi modern games ok with xp. I did a little research online and found people had trubs finding graphics drivers compatible with vista.

Anyone on these boards have any advice??

Win 7 On Dell XPS Gen 4
In case anyone follows me down this road I hope my experience will save you some time. Dell does not recommend the XPS Gen 4 for upgrade but it is possible. BIOS was upgraded to the last version Dell produced (A07) and did a fresh install booting from the CD. Video card and sound card drivers were updated with appropriate Windows 7 versions from AMD (ATI) and Creative.  They installed and ran with only one issue - the game port on the Creative card wasn't supported.  It's not something I ever use to I just disabled it in the Device Manager so Windows would ignore it.

I ran a full performance test suite to run the box through its paces and found my SATA hard drive was running extremely slow (transfer rates would not exceed 5MB/s). After some digging I found that the XPS Gen 4 is built on  the Intel 925XE chipset which uses Intel ICH6 Southbridge chip.  The standard Windows 7 SATA driver apparently does not handle the ICH6 Southbridge properly on the XPS Gen 4. The latest version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager released for Windows 7 drops support for the ICH6 and you'll get an error message if you try to install that version. Fortunately an older release of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager contains a Vista driver for the ICH6 that performs just fine under Windows 7.

The version I used can be found here:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=1787&DwnldID=14794&lang=eng

The file name is iata70_enu.exe After installation and a few reboots Windows 7 device manager showed that it was using the Intel version of the SATA / AHCI driver and hard drive performance was well within specs for the drive I have (40-50MB/s).

Install On Dell XPS 720
Been scouring the net but haven't been able to find anything so I thought I'd post. Sorry if there's been a lot of these types of threads but here's my issue.

Installation of the operating system for Windows 7 actually goes without much difficulty but when I go into the post install setup the monitor goes blank. I've been poking around and what I've managed to conclude is that Dell likes to use it's own generic driver for video display rather than use the Windows Standard VGA Compatible Driver that should start up by default.

The reason why I've come to this conclusion is because I tried booting the new install in safe mode and I could actually see the initial setup page. Of course you can't do the post install settings in safe mode so I couldn't go any further.

My question for you guys, is there any way for me to disable the Dell OEM drivers that like to start overriding the generic drivers that come with windows? And if so how?
