Can I upgrade from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows 7 Professional with the student upgrade version? I have a question which may seem pretty complicated, but I want to have a good and certain answer, because I am not sure how to proceed.

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium To Win 7 Professional
I have a valid install of Vista Home Premium, and would like to upgrade to Windows 7. I made the mistake of buying the Windows 7 Professional before I noticed this upgrade matrix:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-considerations.aspx

So, apparently, in order for me to upgrade to what I have in my hands (Win 7 Pro), it'll be a doosey (at least for me). But, I found Paul Thurrott's clear instructions on how to do a clean install with an upgrade version of Win 7 (again, I have a valid install of Windows Vista).

So here's my question : Can I perform a clean install with my upgrade package (via Paul's workaround), and keep all my files somehow by using partitions? That is, is there a way to do this install with partitioning instead of backing up everything externally and then restoring (my external drive is having issues)?

More info on my internal drives : My computer has 2 physical hard drives. One contains drive C and D, and the other has E and F. Drive C of course has my Vista OS on it, and most of my programs. Drives D, E, and F have personal data files and some programs on them.

Space available:

-- Drive 1 C: 52 GB
-- Drive 1 D: 365 GB
-- Drive 2 E: 9 GB
-- Drive 2 F: 10 GB

I have relatively little experience upgrading O/S's and playing with partitions. One thought was that I might be able to create a partition on Drive 1, do a clean install of Win 7 Pro on it, and then work on migrating over personal files and programs from the existing partitions on that drive. Would this work? Is there a better solution?

Use Win 7 Ultimate Upgrade Version DVD To Upgrade WinXP Professional X64 Computer
Can I use Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade version DVDs to upgrade my Windows XP Professional x64 computers?WindowsMarketplace.com says:Microsoft designed Windows 7 Upgrade media for Windows Vista. Customers with Windows XP can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions but must back up their files, clean install, and then reinstall their applications.

So if I have to back up my files, clean install, and then reinstall my applications, then what's different from a full install? And what are the differences between Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade versions and Windows 7 Ultimate Full versions then?

Vista Home Basic To Win7 Enterprise - Supported Upgrade?
I'm working with an organization that has several PCs running Vista Home Basic.  We'd like to upgrade them to Windows 7, and my understanding is that the only supported in-place upgrade path would be to Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate.

However, the organization is eligible for deep discounts for Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Enterprise (but not Home Premium or Ultimate).  Since as far as I know Professional would not work as an in-place upgrade, would the Enterprise edition work for an in-place upgrade for Vista Home Basic?

Student Upgrade $29.95 From Home Edition To Professional Edition
I have not seen an answer to this question yet. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and I want to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional using the $29.95 student upgrade promotion. Is this possible? And if so, would it be an "upgrade" over the top of my current edition, or would it instead be a clean install?  It looks like the promotion is geared towards users with XP or Vista, but I would like to try Windows 7 Professional, now that I have tested the Home edition.

Upgrade From Win 7 Home Premium To Win7 Professional
I'm trying to upgrade from Win7 Home Premium to Win7 Professional on my new machine. I click the Windows Anytime Upgrade icon and get the dialog to "Go online and choose the edition that is right for you" "After your purchase, Windows will upgrade automatically". Well, it rejects every form of payment I've given it, so this is broken.

I call into the Microsoft Store and they have never heard of this path and insist the only way to upgrade is through the postal service (in other words, through the mail). Who can I call or talk to about buying a product key that will be given to me by EMAIL or PHONE? 1-877-696-7786 is absolutely not the right answer to my question.

Permanent Switch - Vista Home Basic On Home Network To Win 7
Want to install and use windows 7 on one of my home network computers which currently has Windoes Vista Home edition installed as the OS. Want steps to install/upgrade to full permanent install of Windows 7, migrate data and programs so all used on Vista home can be demonstrated w/Windows 7. Intend to install Windows 7 w/signature edition disk provided in the party pack.

Also since the 1st computer I install will not necessarily be the only one, can I install on 2nd(later date) using the same product key? Both computers are my personal ones w/same registration info.

Basically want to fully migrate the 1st computer data/programs and use all w/Windows 7 OS (no virtual trials)

Attempting An Upgrade From Vista Basic 32 Bit To Win 7 RC 32bit
I have a Windows Vista SP2 machine I am trying to update to Windows 7 RC.  I get to the point where I click Upgrade - the scrolling bar goes as it says 'Checking Compatibility' then it stops and flips to a window that says 'Compatibility Report (saved to desktop)'. There is nothing on the list and the only option is 'Close' which exits setup. What could the problem be? I ran the Upgrade Advisor and my system is 100% compatible. I run OneCare Live as an antivirus. Any suggestions???

Upgrade From Win 7 Home Premium To Win 7 Professional
I have bought a new HP laptop bundled with windows 7 home premium. I also bought the upgrade for the windows 7 Professional. As per instructions, i backed up the laptop then run the Windows Anytime Upgrade service, entered the upgrade key and sat back in excitement. Two and a half hours later the laptop is still on the "Preparing to configure Windows- Do not turn off your computer." screen. Is this an expected and acceptable time frame for a brand new machine to run this upgrade? I have to admit i was not expecting this to take as long. i did read somewhere that an upgrade from Vista to 7 could take 1-2 hours.

Upgrade From Vista Ultimate To Win 7 Professional - Is It Possible?
I am currently running Windows Vista Ultimate OEM 64 bit as my main operating system. I am thinking of upgrading to WIN 7 Professional because of the discounted upgrade available. (In Canada WIN 7 Pro upgrade is $125.00) I do not need the multi-language or Bit-Locker features of the Ultimate version of WIN 7. However, I do need the Fax program and Windows Media Center.

I am intending to do a clean install rather than just upgrade the OS. Is it possible to upgrade to a lower version of Windows 7 or do I have to upgrade to the Windows 7 Ultimate?I have been running Windows 7 RC1 on a different drive and like the way it works.

Can Win 7 Home Premium Full Version Be Used To Do An In-place Upgrade?
Can Windows 7 Home Premium full version be used to do an in-place upgrade?

I have a new PC with Vista Home Premium that gives me a free upgrade to Windows 7 (but it will still cost 20 euros for p&p). Vista is pre-loaded and the recovery files are on a separate partition on one drive. Worse case scenario is the hard drive dies. I will need the full version of Windows 7 to do a clean install on a new hard drive, but at the moment I would just like to upgrade.

All things considered, I'm thinking of buying the full version while it's half price but need to know if I can use that to just do an upgrade. Is that possible?

How To Upgrade OEM Home Premium Or Professional To Ultimate ?

Upgrade From Win XP / Vista To Win7: Product Key Language Version
We currently run 3 PCs at home (all 32 bit):

PC 1: German Windows Vista Home Premium
PC 2 & 3: English Windows XP Home

I'd like to purchase the Windows 7 family pack (English) to upgrade all of the PCs (clean install preferred).

Questions:

1. Can all 3 PCs be upgraded to the English version of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with the family pack, despite the different language versions?

2. When performing a clean install, is it sufficient to enter the product key of the previously installed system when using the upgrade disk/key or is the old system required on the harddisk?

3. Just to confirm: The family pack comes with both, the 32 bit and 64 bit version for Windows 7 Home Premium?

Vista's Version Of Movie Maker Is Deleted When You Upgrade To The Win 7 RC
I cannot find Vista's version of Windows Movie Maker now that I upgraded from Vista to the Windows 7 RC, so I assume it was deleted in the process even though it is compatible from what I understand. Windows Live Movie Maker Beta remained, but this is a very basic editor right now as it currently doesn't allow splicing, doesn't allow editing of audio tracks, and has very limited output choices (two).

Upgrade From Vista Home Premium To Win 7 Ultimate
I have Vista Home Premium  and am trying to upgrade to windows 7 ultimate. all the charts say this is possible. I originally bought Pro but i saw your chartys this  and got Ultimate but when i attempt to upgrade...the screen says this isn't possible..i need to do a full install. I think this is not very good and if I want support I have to pay for it. What about the software I already got? Why won't it let me upgrade?

Report:Windows Vista⢠Home Premium cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate  instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. Youâll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive.

To install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate , click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select âCustom (advanced)â. I should note: this is a fairly new Pc (3-4 months) that came with Vista Home Premium . I am not happy with it and debated to drop back to XP but had already installed everything (other software). So, i decided to upgrade to 7 but now find i have to go through the same process.

Upgrade 7 Home Premium To Professional With Product Key Initially Purchased
We have a laptop that currently runs Vista Home Premium.  We purchased Windows 7 Professional and proceeded with a clean install.  After several hours of working with the drivers supplied by the laptop manufacturer (who shall remain nameless) the machine was having significant problems and lost functionality of several components.  So here is the question now that I restored the laptop back to Vista:

If I purchase Windows 7 Home Premium and perform an "upgrade" install (vice the clean install) thereby preserving the drivers and programs, can I then upgrade 7 Home Premium to Professional with the product key I initially purchased?  From reading the Windows 7 site, I know I can upgrade Home Premium to Professional via the Anytime Upgrade function, but I was not able to find any information on performing the same upgrade using my previously purchased product key.

Upgrade From Vista Home Pre To Win 7 Ultimate Failed
I was trying to upgrade from Vista Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, after all the processes when it finally starts booting into Windows 7 (almost after 2 hours process), the message came that the Upgrade has failed and restoring back to previous version of Windows.

I am wondering what the problem could be. Though it has very gracefully restored back to Vista now without any data/file loss.I ran the Upgrade Advisor also, and it suggested to remove Windows Virtual PC and Daemon Tools. I did that.

My notebook is Dell XPS 1530, Intel T8100 2.1GHz, 4GB RAM, and there was 26GB free space available.I checked technet also but couldn't find any solution there.

I checked this post too..

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/9ad6e877-c96d-4a8a-bdbe-63909e806dc2/

but the issue I'm facing is different, after completing final Transferring files, settings, and programs step, and on booting into Windows 7 it gives me the message of Upgrade failure.

Upgrade From Vista SP2 To Win 7 Home Premium Fails
Completed upgrade on first DELL Inspiron after several attemps and many hours.   Second DELL Inspiron 1705 Vista SP2 I have wasted many hours.  When I insert the disk into the DVD there's activity which looks like a decompress.   There's no SETUP screen.  After an hour the process completes but no SETUP screen.   If I try to access the DVD the process starts over.

If I boot with the disk in the DVD the process starts again but the initialization of VISTA is delayed. The BIOS has been updated. I have uninstalled McAfee, PCTools, iTunes, QuickTime and Real Player. With all the problems recorded in this forum, I'm reluctant to proceed.   I do not want to be in the position wher I have to reinstall VISTA.

Upgrade From Win Vista Ultimate To Win 7 Home Premium
I have 2 PCs with Vista Ultimate it on and I bought 2 "upgrades" (or downgrades - you decide) to Windows 7 Home Premium (I never use Bit Locker and only need English). When I bought the upgrades (Amazon.com), it stated that I can do this upgrade. However when I attempted to upgrade it stated that I can only do a reinstall. Can I purchase an upgrade from 7 Home Premium to 7 Ultimate that works at pre install oris there a work around? There is nothing I hate more about Windows than having to reinstall applications, drivers, and updating the registry.
