Upgrade XP Prof X64 English To Win7 Ultimate X64 Dutch
Ok, i'm dazzled by the many websites with each a different opinion, upgrade paths, and so. It took me hours of reading and clicking. I'm nearly fed up. So finally made it to this forum. With my question:
Is it possible to legally upgrade from XP professional X64 English (OEM) to Windows 7 Ultimate X64 Dutch? Retail or OEM needed?
BTW: Windows 7 Professional X64 Dutch would be a good alternative.
It's unclear to me if it' s allowed to switch from an English OS to a dutch OS. Some say any new OS MUST be the same language as the old one. But is this also appliable for the Ultimate version, since it can switch to other languages after install?
I will be doing a clean install.
Further on i am struggling with the ' professional' to ' ultimate' switch. In some cases that path would not be allowed, others say it is allowed.
What we'd need is a wizard containing all the different choices and possiblilities. Simply choose the old OS from a drop down menu and the new OS, and it would tell you YES thats possible or NO, impossible. And under what conditions. Would draw a lot of site visitors.
Just my 2 cents.

If you already have updated device drivers, click Load Driver if available and follow the instructions. Or, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers". IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller I have my SATA drives configured as 1 stand alone for boot C: and the other three in RAID 5 configuration. Vista Ultimate X64 To Win 7 Ultimate X64 In Place Upgrade Issue
I have, twice now, tried to do an in place upgrade from Windows Vista x64 Ultimate to Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Vista is pretty much fully patched up to date, and Windows 7 is RTM and is choosing the option to download the latest updates for install. Both times it has taken about 11 hours to work through most of the phases of the upgrade, and then apparently hang in the transferring setting stages. It has hung at exactly the same point each time: 458886 of 607131 (for some strange reason, it reports this as 62%). The "hang" is not absolute, which is to say that all the rotation of "please wait..." messages continues, so it's not a totally lockup. That said, I let it be for about 8 hours the first time with no changes, and a whopping 35 hours last time (about 46 hours of total time with the upgrade running) - again without any change. Since there is no option to cancel, I was forced to shut down both times, and the rollback has taken perhaps a half hour. There are, of course, several questions to come out of this, but the primary one is "Where is the log?", and how can I determine what the heck it was working on when it decided to go away. Frankly, the idea that someone would RTM this when I'm hearing that a 5 hour in place upgrade is "fast", and it can take as long as 85 hours seems a bit more than ridiculous, but I'm doing my best to go with the flow.

Unable To Upgrade Vista Ultimate X64 To Win 7 Ultimate X64
I tried to upgrade from Vista Ultimate x64 to Windows 7 Ultimate x64. This is supposed to be a supported path for an in-place upgrade. When choosing Upgrade from Setup I get the following message: Windows Vistaâ„¢ Ultimate cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You'll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”. I have run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and uninstalled any application or driver that reported problems. The only application left with a warning is Visual Studio 2008. Everything else is reported as compatible (green check mark). In fact, the Upgrade Advisor indicates that an in-place upgrade is available as an option. I haven't been able to find anyone else with this issue and there is nothing else pointing me in the right direction to resolve this. Has anyone seen this before and/or found a work-around.

Upgrade From Home Premium X64 To X64 Ultimate
I have a new laptop coming and its only going to have Win7 x64 Home premium installed on it. I do have an MSDN sub and in fact not too long ago received MSDN disc's for Win 7 Enterprise and Ultimate as part of my subscription. I already spoke with HP and was told I would want to put Ultimate on before I install any other software on the new laptop and am wondering as to the best way to do this. Can I just go to my MSDN account get a new key and using the DVD's I received simply do an upgrade to the current install or will I need to do a full format and then install Win 7 x64 Ultimate?

All Programs Is Blank On Win7 X64 (upgrade From Vista Premium X64)
I installed Windows 7 Beta x64 as an in-place upgrade over Vista x64 Premium Service Pack 1. There's one minor hiccup in the UI post-upgrade: when I go to the Start Menu and click on "All Programs", nothing at all is displayed. Ironically, this hasn't been a major impediment for me because of how I work. I usually get to what I need through QuickLaunch icons (which came through fine), application launch via hotkeys, finding items in Recent Items, or using the Control Panel. All of those work fine. If I right-click on All Programs, I can successfully open my personal start menu folder nested under my AppData, or the All Users menu folder under the root ProgramData folder. I just don't get a vertical list of items as expected. Anyone have any ideas? I'm guessing this is probably due to a glitch during the migration process, and since the menu appears very similar to Vista's this may be something that happens there as well. EDIT: This isn't the problem documented in MSKB 939041 or 932404. Actual paths to the folders containing the items are: C:Users<name>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms Also note that the menu plainly does "update". I get the <Back displayed after clicking "All Programs".

X64 Vista Ultimate To Win 7 Ultimate Upgrade Fails
I addressed all compatibility issues by uninstalling the software that it didn't like and downloaded the 3gig 64bit upgrade ISO. After it ran for a few hours and moved to what appeared to be the final stages - it rebooted. I found the screen hung right after the spinning MS logo displaying "starting windows" (or similar verbage). I gave it some time... moved the mouse, pressed spacebar, unplugged an external drive, and nothing made the silent HDD act up. Left with no other choice I killed it and rebooted. When it got to the same place it paused... but then informed me the upgrade was not successful, previous version of windows being restored, do not restart.Any advice on where to start here?

Upgrade To Windows 7 RTM From Vista X64 Ultimate Stuck
Just wanted to state that I encountered the "stuck" issue as well, but on my machine it was stuck at 32% for hours on a machine with over 1 million files. I powered down my machine and it restarted in Vista with no problem, although there were three new folders obviously created during the upgrade to hold installation files. I've deleted those folders.I was unable to find a log file that might indicate the file(s) which were causing the "stuck" condition. NOTE TO MICROSOFT: It would be GREAT if you could provide more on-screen feedback about what specific file or setting is being migrated, and some onscreen indication of the location of a log file (if it exists) where one could go to find out how far the process went. You display every file as it is installed in Visual Studio. Why be so obscure during the upgrade process in Windows 7?In my case, I've been testing Win7RC in a separate partition via dual-booting. I zapped that partition and did a clean install of Windows 7 RTM, which went off without issue. I've been re-installed my programs (a pain, but I'll only put on what I need). In the meantime, I've still got my Vista partition to boot up in if I need anything there.

Build 7057 X64 Upgrade From 7048 X64 Fails ?
Can someone confirm that it's a general problem or have I just got a bad D/L. If I try and UPGRADE from Windows 7 build 7048 X-64 to Build 7057 X-64 it starts OK but after a while (during the expanding files stage) I get error -- some necessary files for installation cannot be copied ?? Clean install seem to wok. HA1 and checksums of my iso seem correct. Actually upgrading from a beta to another beta is not a goood idea anyway but I want to make sure that I haven't got a bad D/L before I try an upgrade from a Vista installation.

Vista X64 To Win 7 X64 Upgrade Fails
I have tried upgrading my Vista Hope Premium X64 system to Windows 7 Home Premium X64 system many times in the past few days and I am having a problem with the process aborting. I am running an Acer Aspire x1200 with 4GB of ram. System is running fine on Vista but I wanted to upgrade my home network with Windows 7 for ease of use. I have run the Upgrade Advisor and the only thing it flags is the NVIDIA nForce System Management Controller with a status of Unknown and "We don't have compatibility information about this device". I have checked and the driver is up to date. When I run the migration, I run in an update mode. It runs for about 4 hours. When it gets to the "Transferring files, settings, and programs (62%)" point, it sits there for about an hour while it moves thousands of Sun cache files. This appears to finish normally. I then get a screen that says "Setup will continue after restarting your computer". I then get the Windows Logo screen. The next screen says "Setup is starting services". Next, the process continues with the "Transferring files, settings, and programs" at the (63%) point which seems to indicate that things are going forward. Next comes the BSOD. "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. The technical information on the screen: *** STOP: 0x0000003B (0x00000000C000001D, 0xFFFFF88006277D30, 0xFFFFF880054C5EC0, 0x0000000000000000) . It then states that it is collecting data for a crash dump. At this point, to MS credit, the process rolls back to my Vista system and I am able to have my system back in an operational manner. I have disconnected all of my USB devices except for my wireless mouse. I ran scans to get rid of any spybots and ad-bots before I started the migration. I turned my McAfee security software off before starting the migration. I have the latest Vista updates applied. All of my other software is up to date.

Vista X64 - Win 7 X64 Upgrade
I obtained a copy of Windows 7 from my friend, Windows 7 X64, and I want to do a clean upgrade to it from Windows Vista Home Premium x64. However when I attempt to upgrade from inside windows, the setup stops at the message "you can't upgrade to windows x64 from windows x86, you can't upgrade from windows x86 to x64" etc, and another message concerning restarting my computer. Why won't this work? I have a lot of documents and programs that I want on my PC and I don't want to have to "easy transfer" all of them from and to my computer, and I do NOT want to reinstall all the applications I have. Any ideas?

Upgrade From X86 Vista To X64 Win7
I plan to upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium x86 to Windows Seven Home Premium x64 when it is released. However, I only want to pay for an upgrade license, NOT a full price version. My current version of Vista Home Premium is itself an upgrade from the original OEM copy of XP that came on my PC. There are two ways as far as I can see: i) Vista Home Premium x86 > Vista Home Premium x64 > Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (first stage done using an alternate media which I have just paid GBP 7 to be delivered shortly. ii) Vista Home Premium x86 > Windows 7 Home Premium x86 > Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (first stage using an x86 retail upgrade, second stage using alternate media obtained after buying the retail x86 package). However, looking at the following article: Installation choices for 64-bit consumer versions of Windows Vista it reveals that the steps are likely to be even more complex. For example, my option i) becomes:Uninstall Vista altogether Reinstall my original Dell x86 copy of XP Home Edition. Use the Vista alternative media to do an upgrade installation of Vista Home Premium x64. Then do an upgrade installation of Windows x64 on top of that. Extremely messy, and almost certain to end in tears! It would be nice if MS took the opportunity to provide a straightforward upgrade path from x86 to x64 this time around; until we know the upgrade options no one knows for sure I guess. However, does anyone know or suspect an easier method? For example, with my x86 copy of Vista Home Premium in situ, could I install a clean copy of Vista Home Premium x64 on another partition by booting from the DVD, and then just do an upgrade install of Windows 7 x64 when it become available?

Upgrade Vista Enterprise X64 To Win 7 Enterprise X64
I'm trying to upgrade my Vista Enterprise x64 to Windows 7 Enterprise x64 by using the MSDN DVD. This is the Italian version of the Windows 7 Enterprise DVD (x64 and x86), upgrading an Italian installation of Windows Vista Enterprise x64. When I run the installer, it asks me to select between the x64 version of the OS and the x86 version. I select the x64 version. After thinking on it for a while, the installer kicks me out saying that I can't upgrade from a 64 bit version to a 32 bit version, even though I selected the 64 bit version. If nothing else works, I'll download the 64-bit only ISO from the website, but I'd rather save the hassle - has anyone else had a similar problem?

X64 Ultimate Freeze With ITunes 9.0.3
I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Build 7600, and have not had a single problem before this. I have been able to recreate the exact same freeze 5 times, even in safe mode, so I am certain this issue is caused in some way by iTunes. When I open iTunes, the window comes up, but just after it attempts to access the iTunes store, iTunes freezes, followed immediately by a full system lock-up. This happens regardless of the presence of an Internet connection. There is no way to get out of the lock-up besides powering off manually. This freeze has occurred with both the x64 and x86 versions of iTunes 9.0.3. Has anyone else experienced this problem/know of a fix?

Win 7 Ultimate X64 Floppy Drive Issues
I experienced some issues trying to format, write or copy to floppy drive since I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my pc. Floppy drive is correctly recognized by m/b, but I can't format, read or write because I get errors. It seems surface is damaged. But it isn't, because IÂ moved the same drive and the same disc to another computer, and they works perfectly in reading, writing and formatting. My m/b is an Asus M3A78, with AMD770 chipset, and I read around the net that it could be a chipset driver issue with Windows 7 x64. Is there any solution I can try to fix it, and make my floppy drive working again?

Install Win 7 Ultimate X86 Or X64 With 4GB RAM
I have a Dell M1710 laptop, with 4GB of RAM. Currently I'm using Windows XP, which sees 3.2GB of RAM. I have a choice of installing either the x86 or x64 version of Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm trying to decide which to install based on the 4GB RAM hardware ceiling that I have (motherboard can only accept two 2gb SIMMs max). Would I get better performance (less hard drive paging) with the X86 version using 3.2GB of RAM, or the x64 version using 4.0GB RAM? How much overhead does the x64 version of Ultimate have, vs. the x86 version? Is that overhead more than 0.8GB of RAM?

File Version Error On Installing From Vista Home Premium X64 To Win 7 X64
I get this error message when I try to install Windows 7 x64 on my Vista Home Premium x64 HP9340F machine from within Vista x64:The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher. I can install the x32 version of Windows 7 fine, but I need to use drivers from my x64 Vista ie. IR Transceiver for Windows Media center. I would imagine the Vista x64 drivers might work with the x64 Windows 7 where they do not work with the x32 Windows 7. I'm not sure I'm making sense to anyone but me, sorry. If you have any ideas drop me a bone. I didn't try the Windows 7 x64 install from a boot, maybe that would have worked?
