View 4 Replies View RelatedI'd like to put a .cmd file in my c:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup directory, but Documents and Settings has a lock on it and tells me "Access denied" when I click on it. Is this a job for "Take Ownership" or is there another way? The instructions for "Take Ownership" say not to use it on the C drive, but it's not clear if that applies to the whole drive, or individual files/folders on it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a notebook PC, and was quite annoyed to find that Intel has magically removed the ability to change the Centrino N 130 wireless adapter's MAC address. Before the nutters get in here with accusations of "illegal" activity, I feel obligated to point out that there is nothing "illegal" about changing the MAC address on my own property. Briefly, I want to pose my notebook as a hypothetical attacker, trying to bump one of my other wireless devices off the router by assuming its MAC address. I don't really know what would happen if I did this, because, like I said, Intel artificially crippled the Centrino N 130 through its Windows 7 drivers. Rather paternalistic of them.Another benefit of the proposed experiment: showing the futility of MAC filtering in keeping out the "bad guys." I have been convinced of this for some time, but been simultaneously unable to demonstrate it to my own satisfaction. There is no substitute for actually trying something, rather than just reading about it.
I am also a little annoyed at the Centrino N's (lack of) performance. I have yet to have it connect at greater than 72 Mbit/s, even while sitting less than 10 feet from the router with a clear line of sight.FWIW, my router is a NetGear WNR3500v2. N wireless is enabled. As far as I know, this router is capable of supporting a full 300 Mbit or so 802.11n wireless connection, as long as the wireless NIC on the other end is doing its part (which mine doesn't).With all that in mind, can someone suggest an N-capable wireless NIC that is not purposely crippled by its manufacturer? I would prefer an internal mini-PCIe card, but Intel seem to be the only ones making those. Even a G-capable or USB device would probably serve the purpose, if that's all that's available.
I have one PC running Vista (home basic), one running XP (professional) and one running Windows 7 (home basic). There is a printer connected to the Vista box, which is shared.
On the XP box I can both see and use the printer on the Vista box (i.e. a "net view \vistabox" shows the printer, and under "printers and faxes" I can install and use it).
On the Windows 7 box, however, I can see the Vista box (i.e. a "net view" shows it in the list of available PCs on the network) but a "net view \vistabox" gives me an "access denied" error.
The Windows 7 machine has a password on it, the Vista and XP machines don't. All machines are on the same workgroup name (which is "WORKGROUP"). On the XP box I don't need a password to access the shared printer on the Vista machine; it just works.
Extensive Googling has failed to render enlightenment, nor has browsing this forum. I'm sure it has something to do with security and passwords, somewhere, somehow, but I have no idea in which direction to look for it, let alone fix it. I have also read some things about workgroups and homegroups not being the same in Windows 7, but I'm not sure if this is correct (and if so, relevant).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI haven't really had any issues since I first installed Windows 7 and now I'm trying to access a shared drive over a network and I'm getting this annoying error message that I cannot access a shared drive over the network.
I decided to reinstall Windows 7 and before that I never had this issue.
I have not installed any third party software, I've enabled network discovery and right now I cannot access any shared folders or drives, at all, though it can see it.
I'm getting that stupid error message: "<Network drive> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied."
What am I doing wrong here?
how do I find my network security key on my Verizon router 37H9B

I'm always on the administrator account, and there are no other users on this computer, and I've set the file so that the administrator has full control over it.Normally, I should be able to access the files [for example, my 'My Documents' and my 'My Videos' folders are unaccessible].
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a go at installing Windows 7 yesterday and have run into a small hiccup. On my XP installation, my HD was partitioned into 2 drives, C: and D: (both the C and D drives are NTFS formatted).C: was used for windows and program files.D: was used for my documents eg. videos, photos etc.I installed Windows 7 as a fresh install to the C: partition and the installation went smoothly. However, My Computer, I can see the D: drive listed, but every time I click on the icon it says "Access Denied - Drive Not Accessible"All my stuff is backed up on an external drive so I'm not too worried about re-formatting HD etc, but wondered why it is doing it and if anyone knew a way to get my D: drive back without formatting?
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy husband and I have been trying to get pictures from our camera (Fuji FinePix S3400) to the computer with the supplied USB lead. WE have been able to do so by taking the SD card and shoving it into the computer but we can't do so with the lead which we prefer to do. It seems wrong that we can't do that! With lots of going into all jigging around into files and setting we keep getting the message, "Access is Denied". We have even got into security of the folder and put in "Authenticated Users". We have an Acer that was bought with Vista and then converted to Win 7.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI seem to be having a problems with my computer's Administrator perks. My account is an administrator, and recently, I have been unable to do anything that requires that I be an administrator. Whenever I run an application that is set to Run as Administrator, an error box opens that says "The specified module could not be found" I can not access User Account Controls, the window just does not open, no error message. I can use applications that would normally display the error message in Safe Mode, but I still can't access things like User Account Controls.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOk, I have XP and Win 7 setup in dual boot mode, but I can't run XP because (I am pretty sure) the boot.ini file I have in Win 7 now is pointing to the wrong disk and partition for the location of XP. So I wanted to edit the boot.ini file and change the numbers so that it would point to the correct one. But when I go to save changes I keep getting "Access Denied" message. I have admin privileges, so I don't understand why it won't let me write to it. Is there a security setting I need to change so that I can edit this file?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been having intermittent OS problems on my PC, so before they managed to get any worse, I ran the sfc/scannow check. It ran without a problem and when it was done it reported it had completed 100%, however "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."So, I go into my windows (yes I am logged in as administrator) to read the log file and access is denied. I went into the security settings for the main Log file to change the security settings for myself to full control, however it didnt change anything. I am unable to get to any type of security measures for the file itself going the regular route via its properties.I am not all that knowledgeable with these types of things, (but know enough to get myself in trouble now and again! ) and would appreciate knowing if there is something else I need to do in order to gain access and read this file? I also tried to get to it going through my Administrator Command Prompt but I was denied access in this attempt also.

View 5 Replies View Relatedspent an hour searching for a topic like this - and I know the answer is out there - but I cannot find it. Can anyone point me to the right answer?I have 2 Windows 7 PCs on a switch. I can see the "Users" folder on the other PC over the network from both sides. But trying to open the administrative share (SHCPCC$) Windows throws me "Access denied".From another computer I can get my hands on - no problem. I can access the admin share without hassle. Why is one computer allowed, another not? I cannot figure out a difference between the systems. Small maybe - the user names I'm trying from, is the same on both computers. But I even try using login account "SHCPCSirHC" from SH2PC, and vice versa, "SH2PCSirHC" from SHCPC, passwords are the same. Nothing, just "Access denied", as if the passwords were wrong.
