i was on the internet and it seemed windows crashed everything said not responding then wouldn't load. So felt that i had no other choice but to switch off the PC as it had stayed like this for a long time, when i came to reboot i got a message saying 'Reboot or select proper boot device' I am using an Acer Aspire X3450 PC and don't have the recovery disk but i do have an Acer Aspire laptop with the disk, when i put that in the PC it loads up giving me the option to Restore but it wont let me select it or highlight it. So downloaded a copy of windows 7 as a torrent and burned it to a disk in the hope i could re-install windows. This will allow to go into options like startup repair but wont repair anything as it will only seem to recognise the OS on the disk. So i removed the disk and all that happens is the same reboot error. I can't re-install windows as it will not allow me to.
PC Spec
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
RAM: 6GB DDR3 Memory

Short version: Swapped HDDs, then got the error message in title on one of the drives. Tried mbrfix and bootsect via repair through Windows 7 CD, but doesn't help. Drive is still functioning.
Long version: I recently swapped some HDDs back and forth (one with Windows XP and another with Windows 7, but I did not try booting with both at the same time) and all of a sudden, I get the error message listed in the topic. The HDD is definitely still functioning, I can see it in BIOS and when booting with the Windows CD, I can use command prompt and browse the directories. I've tried mbrfix and bootsect. With bootsect, it says it is successful when entering the line "bootsect /nt60 all" and automatically finds the C:. However, when selecting repair through the Windows cd, the adrive does not show up and the operating system is listed as unknown local disk.
I've read through most of the threads with this same problem but either mbrfix or bootsect seems to usually fix it. I'd prefer not to have to copy the entire drive or reformat if possible, but I guess I will have to if I can't find any other solutions. Since bootsect was successful, does it mean the problem lies elsewhere and is not the MBR?

When I try to start my computer I get a message "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key_". This problem started a few days ago after my computer crashed. I have had it up and running for 7 months now with no problems. I bought a drive that was not compatable* with my motherboard when I got the parts, but a friend let me borrow one to install windows 7. I just bought a drive to try and fix the problem and now I can't locate my windows 7 disc. I've checked all cables and unplugged everything that was in a usb slot. I've gone in bios and looked for boot order and the only thing that is trying to launch is my HDD. I'm beginning to think I'm just boned since I can't find my windows 7 disc.

I'm getting the message " Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" upon starting up my computer. This happened randomly after I was torrenting something, I heard the torrent finish, fell asleep for an hour and when I woke up my computer was off. Don't know why. Turned on the computer and got this message. I've tried a few things based on the advice of others like clearing CMOS, tinkering with the BIOS and using Diskpart to make a specific partition "active" which is where I ran into some weird problems.
First off, it seems like according to my BIOS my computer recognizes both of my SATA hard drives and my DVD drive. The boot device priority was in the correct order and I tried tinkering with that to no avail. But it does show up. I've been running my computer and trying things out now with rather only the primary SATA HD hooked up or with the DVD drive as well (when trying to use the recovery disk).
The odd part though is when I tried using the recovery disk to access the command prompt and try out diskpart, I found out that I had no partitions? I was following steps to make it "active" and when I got to typing "list partition" after "selecting disk 0" I got a message saying the disk had no partitions which I found odd cos I was using the computer a few hours ago off of that very hard drive...

My computer randomly had a blue screen when I was using it. It restarted it by itself, and now every time I try to turn it on, it shows a black screen that says "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I honestly don't know anything about computers.
Toshiba Satellite L775, Windows 7.

I have recently encountered the infamous " Reboot and select proper boot device. " this occurred after I formatted my 500GB Hard Drive. I am a bit of a noob and I forgot that this would wipe off my windows too. I had lost the windows CD so I went to other means (torrenting, I know I'm a scumbag) to get the ISO of the Windows 7 Ultimate CD and burned Windows 7 to a DVD. Then I put the disk in and it won't boot. It just gives me the error message. I am currently trying to make a bootable USB drive and do it that way but I am doubtful that this will work.

I was playing video games and suddenly my screen froze. Thinking it was a minor problem, I started pushing all the "oh crap" keys when a game freezes. After nothing happened after five minutes, I restarted my computer. For the first time I saw the message "Express Gate Installation not Complete." Thinking nothing of it, I let it continue to load and once it reached the windows loading screen, I figured something was wrong. I have the OS loaded on an SSD and it's never taken more than maybe a couple seconds. However, it took about five minutes before the computer restarted itself and went through the loading process again. When it was supposed to load the windows screen, it gave the "Reboot and Select Proper Device" line.Restarting it, I went into BIOS to see if all my drives were detected, and they were. Letting my computer restart itself a couple more times just gave the "Reboot and Select Proper Device" screen over and over again. Assuming it was my SSD, I went out and a bought the same exact one. After plugging in the SSD and putting the Windows 7 Disk in, it went straight to the same screen as before. It's not reading the CD/Dvd Drive either. After having a friend look at and coming up with nothing, I'm getting fairly frustrated

Last night my computer froze and gave me a BSOD, and when I tried to simply restart it, it would get to the windows splash screen and BSOD again. Then after trying a few things to fix it, its giving me the 'Reboot and select proper boot device etc'. Ive checked command prompt and it is showing my HDD as the 100 meg system partition that Windows 7 makes when installing, but I cannot access the rest of the drive.
Took the HDD out and to a mates place so I could get anything i needed off it before I just wiped the drive completely, and his computer did the same thing after a few minutes.
From that I assume it was a virus of some sort, and for me I can lose what I have on the HDD without caring too much, however he has things not backed up on his HDD that he really needs to recover.
Has anyone had this problem and been able to recover the data somehow?

My computer was working fine for a year and a half and just had this message,"reboot and select proper boot device". I unplugged every device one at a time (including all external peripheral devices) and tried to reboot unsuccessfully. I checked to make sure everything was properly attached multiple times. Sometimes I'm able to boot with the windows 7 disk....most times not so lucky. I checked my bios boot order and everything seems to be correct after reading posts online. I wonder if the CMOS battery can cause this or if their is some type of diagnosis tool or hardware malfunction causing this. I ran seagate tools to check hard drives..They are all working fine.

I installed Windows 7 on a sata HDD. I also have XP on an IDE HDD which is what I was using up until now. When I boot the windows 7 HDD by itself it gives me the error "Reboot or Select Proper Boot Device".If I start the computer with the XP HDD and the Windows 7 HDD, then I get the option to boot from Windows 7 or "an earlier version" (which is just the xp installation I have).Everything works fine this way, but I want the power cable for my graphics card. So I need to get the W 7 HDD to boot by itself.I have a TP43D2-A7 Tseries motherboard and I installed the BIOS update. When I'm in BIOS it does detect the windows 7 hdd, but it does not want to boot from it, even if it is the only item on the boot list.

I received and installed my Samsung 830 64 GB SSD today. However, when I try to install windows 7 on it, I keep getting the following error: "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". I already have a HDD with windows 7, but am planning to clean install 7 on the ssd. I've flashed my mobo (ASUS M5A88-V EVO AM3+) to the latest version and have set the controller for the SSD to AHCI in bios. I tried disconnecting my hdd and tried installing windows 7 but I got the same error.

I got my computer working but when I started it up it didn't tell me to press F8 or ESC or anything to get into the Bios. But what it does say is "Reboot and Select proper boot device. Or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". I am assuming, since I cant enter the bios too tell it where to boot from, Id just put in the Operating System disc and let it install itself. When it says "boot media" it means the Operating System right?

I recently built a new rig and attempted to install Windows 7, yet when I attempted to install the software from the disk I received the message "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device". I have changed the boot order in bios (I have a Gigabyte Z77- D3H motherboard) but that has not helped, with it not booting from the drive with the disk in that I assigned.

I am having a problem starting my PC! I have to start it in the boot menu under the RAID option. If I do not do this a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.." comes up, and just keeps popping up regardless of what I press! I would try using my boot disk but for the life of me I can't find it, and as windows 7 was already installed on this computer when we got it 3 year ago, I can't accurately recall if it came with one!I am no expert on BIOS, but I have read other problems similar to this one, and know that if I don't have the boot disk or the OS disk, I will need to know that at least.I am curious if the (Hard drive) is the issue. The BIOS tells me that anything in parentheses is disabled from corresponding type menu.
