How Can I Place New Programs On The Start Bar ?
I'm trying to figure this out. I use programs that are not on my local disc, but on a network, on windows servers. I created a shortcut and placed it on my desktop, but now I wan't to have those next to the start button.

I am unable to drag them to there, because a red symbol shows up that contains a round and a line through it. When I open the program i normally see "Pin to start menu", but not with this. It only gives me the option to close it.

Black Screen - No Start Bar - No Icons
First I have read someone comments about issues regarding missing Start Bar issue however this one seems to be a little more challenging. I have been using Window 7 RC for approximately 6 weeks and everything was working (generally speaking very good). However, yesterday upon power-up I log on as usually and after the login I have a black screen, period.

No Start Bar, No desktop icons, No Sidebar, just a black screen. Mouse right click does nothing, Ctrl Alt and Delete brings up Task Manager and from there I can run all programs without problems. This issue occur both in the Admin Account and the Guest Account. I can open the sidebar and then see the Icons however on a re-start I'm back to the black screen same issues.

I have done another install of Windows 7 RC yesterday and again the same issues occur. I have completely Virus checked and Malware checking the machine prior to yesterday's install and found nothing abnormal.

Whereas I have two montiors I 've checked out whether it maybe defaulted to the 2nd - Not - Re installed the Windows Graphic Drivers as well. I also tried system Restore before I re-installed windows 7 same result with the black screen.

Can't Search Programs In The Start Bar
I recently installed windows 7, and it generally runs great, but...

apparently there is supposed to be a little search bar in the start menu so when you click start you can just start typing to search for a program...

but mine doesn't seem to exist. Where can I enable it?

Doubly Pinned Program On Start Bar - Bug
How to produce :

Drag notepad from the startmenu to the startbar to pin it to it.

Now doubleclick on a .txt file to open notepad.

Do you now have 2x notepad on the startbar like me or does it combine into one ??

I have  the option always combine, hide labels selected in the startbar preferences
which should prevent this from happening.

Taskbar For Each Monitor With Multi Monitor
Is there a possibility to have a taskbar on each monitor, optionally containing only the programs which are on that monitor?

I doubt this feature is available as I just found the following entry within the support: "Find the taskbar" which is stating "If you're using multiple monitors, the taskbar will only appear on one monitor."

So my suggestion is adding the feature.

Plus showing the alt-tab-window on all monitors.

Task Bar On Top, Start Menu Is Always Full Screen Height
I prefer my Task Bar across the top of the screen, rather than at the bottom. I also like it to autohide. This is my preference.

This seems to work okay but for one thing. When I click the Start button the start menu expands to the full height of the screen, making the thing I'm most likely to want to click on ("All Programs") as far away from my mouse as is possible!

I've been told by various fanboys not to crave the Classic start menu any more, as clearly I am a dinosaur for wanting that. Fair enough, I'm trying to use what's given to me by Windows 7.

Is there a setting or trick that will allow my Start menu to be only as high as it needs to be? Even if it's only half the height of the screen that will be a relief.

And don't say I should move my Task Bar to the bottom, that's not gonna happen.

Multi Monitor Screen
The new multimon screen looks nice, but apparently I can't mix 4:3 and 16:9 screens anymore? If I set the first screen to 16:9 and the second to 4:3 I get a "Cannot save/apply display options" error.

Weird...

Multi Monitor Wallpaper
i use a triple-head configuration with my center monitor specified as primary display. i have made some 3x Wide screen wallpapers, and i set them as the desktop backgrounds. it works fine with one caveat:

the images left most border starts on the center display --the image is triple wide, but the right-most third wraps around the the left display.

any ideas on how to properly center the image? i need the center display to be the primary as certain applications throw a fit when they are run on a non-primary channel.

Multi-Monitor Taskbar Support
Any suggestions to deal with multiple monitors in Windows 7? I was using UltraMon in Vista and really liked what it did. With all the changes to the taskbar in 7, UltraMon has lots of issues.

Is there anything new in 7 dealing with the taskbar (across multiple monitors)?

Trying To Get Multi-Monitor Resolutions Set Up
I have been having a problem with trying to get Multi-Monitor resolutions set up. On XP my monitor setup is capable of 3360 x 1050; with 7 it automatically separates them and sets each resolution to 1680 x 1050, I would like to enable Span-extended desktop and have had no luck, CCC on XP allows this and on 7 the option simply isn't there. I was just wondering if I was overlooking something.

Multi Monitor Taskbar - Confirmed
I read recently that upon release, windows 7 will have multi-monitor taskbar support, which I'm very excited about. Is anyone able to confirm this, as it seems that they were already shipping Windows 7 when this news emerged.

If I can pin programs to one monitor or the other, and have 2 "show desktop" buttons, then I'll be a very happy man.

Win 7 Multi Monitor Problem
As a partner, I installed 7Ultimate on my personal machine.  I have a problem and I'm puzzled by the lack of any forum corresponding to 7 on the community website.  These responses from Microsoft engineers have been very valuable in the past.

If there is an appropriate forum, please route this question to it.

I have four monitors installed in a 1,2 top and 3,4 bottom configuration. Monitor 1 is the primary and had the master toolbar at one time, (quicklaunch etc).  It is still primary but the master toolbar has moved to monitor three which is left bottom and is not primary.  Why did this happen and what can I do to fix it?

Multi Monitor Window Movement
I have connected 3 Monitors to my Nvidia graphic card. Only two are supported by the GPU at the same time. New with Window 7 (or the Win7 Nvidia driver) is the feature to automatically activate the display for usage with window, when I turn my connected monitors on. Thats cool.

However I have some problems with the window placement. When a monitor is disabled and a window is placed still on this monitor, I cannot easily move the window to the active monitor. Yes, I know the Win-arrow-keys shortcuts, but in my eyes thats not intuitive.

Suggestion:

- Isnt it possible to allow dragging the small taskbar preview? Meaning if dragged the window will be placed where the mouse button is de-pressed (should work with or without Aero).

- In the taskbar preview a small indicator for the display the window is located on should be given.

UAC Mess Up Multi Monitor Setup
I'm not sure where to report a bug in Win7, or if it's related to drivers, but I'm prone to say it's win7 - didn't have the problem in vistaI have 2 monitors and a TV connected to my PC, the two monitors are connected through a ATI HD4870, and the TV through a HD4350.

My problem is this, sometimes when I perform an action that activates UAC, windows completely mess up my monitor setup, but primary goes black, and my tertiary (TV) becomes primary, the secondary stays the same. The only way to fix this is to reboot my system, and it's only sometimesDoes anyone have the same problem and/or a fix ?

Where's The Extended Multi Monitor Support ?
I thought Windows 7 was supposed to have improved support for multi-monitor. OK, it's nice that each monitor can have it's own Cleartype and colour settings, but what about wallpaper and the taskbar.

Tiled wallpapers always start from the primary monitor - not the left most monitor. As a result, it's impossible to have a panaorama image stretch across the desktop all the way from left to right, unless you have the primary monitor as left-most.

The Taskbar only appears on the primary monitor.

The new Snap options for positioning windows just don't work very well with multi-monitor. There seems to be no way of setting up a half-screen view if it isn't at the extreme left/right edge of the whole space. It'd be really nice to be able to (say) drag to a corner and have a half-screen view on that monitor.

Span A Multi Monitor Wallpaper With No Software
Despite all the incredible advancements that Windows 7 offers, it still sucks at managing all but the most rudimentary functionality of multiple displays. I run three monitors at home, and it's often bothered me that I repeat the same wallpaper three times, once on each monitor.

I have looked around and discovered that if you make your wallpaper the same dimensions as the available screen real estate and then tile that background, it will fit perfectly and span all three monitors.

For example, I use 3x22" displays with 1680x1050 resolutions for a total screen dimension of 5040x1050. If I make a single image that's 5040x1050 and tile it, it fits perfectly across all my displays.

Multi Monitor Support Using Nvidia Go 6100 Graphics Issue
When windows installed it found the drivers for the graphics from nvidia via windows update and everything operates as expected. When an external monitor is connected, the laptop display will turn off and the external will become the primary monitor, this happens regardless of the external monitor is on or off when connected.

Additionally it happens on any monitor new or old connected and it does correctly detect and set the resolution and frequency for the monitor. In the Nvidia control panel it does not display the laptop display as existing and the only option for monitors is single display (no other options are shown). Using the windows monitor controls yeilds no different results, it simply acts as if there is no built in monitor at all.

One other interesting quirk is that when the external monitor is disconnected the process will not reverse, the computer still acts as if it is connected and the laptop display remains blank. The only way I have found to reset it so that the laptop display can be used is to restart the computer after unplugging the display. Is this a driver/windows issue or a hardware problem? Any thoughts?

Support True Multi Monitor RDP Session (as A Server)
We're using 3 monitor setups with both portrait and landscape monitors.

I did initial testing of the new "true multi monitor" feature of RDP 7.

It worked great as long as I was connecting to either Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 Ultimate (both in trial versions). Based on additional research of microsoft websites that noted that true mutli monitor remote desktop connection is support by Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise, we have purchased 5 new computers with Win 7 Professional.

Now I'm trying to connect to Windows 7 Professional from Windows 7 Professional system and I can only get the RDC session on one monitor only. Quite frustrating.

I contacted both Dell and Microsoft but neither could tell me if Win 7 Professional can host true multi monitor session.

Did any of you try this? I'm trying to determine if it is Win 7 Pro limitation or some system setting that I'm missing?

Changing Multi Monitor Layout Changes Screen Refresh Rate
I have an old screen (800x600 non PnP) that I use for multi monitor. It is correctly configured at 800x600 and 60Hz.

If the Control Panel, I change the position of this screen maintaining all other configurations (namely the screen resolution) windows changes the refresh rate from 60Hz to 70Hz making unusable. I have to manually go to advanced settings and change it back to the normal value.

Windows should not change any other value other than it was requested to. The resolution and refresh rate are not connected with "virtual" position of the screen in my desktop.

The screen refresh rate can only be changed in the advanced settings, I did not even open this window so it should not change any setting inside.

One-click Minimize / Restore Missing For Multi-window Or Multi-tab Programs
The new taskbar is fabulous, but it has lost one really valuable feature: the ability to minimise and restore multi-tab programs like IE8 with one click on the taskbar icon.

Restoring from the taskbar
----------------------------
Programs with one window work perfectly.  Click the taskbar icon, and the program minimises/restores perfectly well.  But programs with multiple windows or tabs - such as IE8 - force you to use the Preview feature, and then select a window/tab to open.

The preview feature is wonderful, but it shouldn't be FORCED upon you.  If you just want to restore IE8 back to as it was before you minimised it, you should be able to just click on the icon.

Minimising to the taskbar
---------------------------
I can no longer minimise a multi-window/tab program (such as IE8 again) by clicking on its taskbar icon.  This is often much more convenient than navigating to the little minimise button in IE8's title bar.

In fact, when IE8 is open, clicking on its icon in the taskbar has exactly the same effect as hovering over it.  So really its behaviour is inconsistent and puzzling.  (IE8 is just my example; all multi-window/tab programs suffer this).

Summary
----------
The new taskbar is fabulous, but it really does need these two little glitches sorting out.  For multi-window/tab programs, if the user chooses not to use the Preview feature, then simply clicking on the taskbar icon should do the minimise/restore action, just as it does for single window/tab programs, and just as it did in Vista, XP, et al.
