Difference In Media Between Regular Upgrade And Family Pack
I have just spent the last three hours driving around from store to store to try to buy a copy of the Family Upgrade Pack for my kid's computers. No one had it at retail. I need to order it online but I'd like to get started on the installs now.
Is it possible to use the media I already own (Win 7 Home Premium Upgrade), install it as a trial without the serial number, and then use the serial number that comes with the Family Pack that will be coming in the next few days? Weekends are best for these projects but they are looking for the upgrade asap.

Family Pack, IP Address And Future Upgrade
I was just wondering if Microsoft will do "IP address verification" when someone buy a family pack. In other words, is it possible for 3 friends to buy the family pack and to install it in 3 differents houses? Also, will it be possible for me to upgrade to a single Windows 8 license with a 7 family pack license? Thanks for any insight.

Media Player Will Not Play Regular Codecs Such As MP3, WMV, And AVI
I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 installation to Windows 7 RTM x64 a few days back. The upgrade went smooth and everything worked as it should. The new media player got hold of all media files in my new Libraries, and was able to play almost every file I got, more than Vista used to, including regular mp3, avi and wmv files. Then I did two things. I installed Apple iTunes (and Quicktime) and uninstalled the Nokia Music Manager application (which had been with me from the Vista upgrade). The next time I started WMP to play music I got the error message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.". This is for standard mp3 and avi files as well as a bunch of other media file types. Some files still play though, for instance the C:UsersPublicRecorded TVSample Mediawin7_scenic-demoshort_raw.wtv video sample. Neither C:UsersPublicMusicSample MusicSleep Away.mp3, C:UsersPublicVideosSample VideosWildlife.wmv or any other of the mp3 and wmv samples will play, giving me the same error. The Media Center application behaves in the same manner. VLC media player and iTunes are able to play all files that WMP is unable to play with no problems. It seems to me that either Nokia Music Manager or Apple iTunes have messed up my codecs when uninstalling/installing. I've tried to remove all media applications from Windows 7 using optionalfeatures.exe, and then reinstalling them, with no change in behavior. Has anyone got any ideas as might what have happened? And is there anything I can do to reinstall/reactivate the nonworking codecs?

Upgrade Pack - Will I Receive A 64 Bit Disk Key ?
I very recently bought a new laptop which qualifies for the Windows 7 Upgrade. The laptop came with Vista HP 32bit but the hardware supports 64bit. I have purchased the upgrade which is due to arrive soon, but then realized i need a 64bit OS to get the most from my system. I have been led to believe that i will receive a Windows 7 32bit Disk and Product Key, however i have seen elsewhere that i will get 2 disks, 32bit and 64bit and 1 product key that will work for both. So should i cancel my order before its too late and download a pirate version of 64bit 7? Or will the product i have purchased provide me with the 64bit OS my system is designed to run?

Difference Between Free, OEM Upgrade Key And Retail Upgrade Key
Is there any difference between the "Free" upgrade key to be received for a new computer purchased during the qualifying period, and a retail upgrade key?The last information I had is that the "Free" upgrade from HP/Arvato will not be shipped until after 11/12/09.I have retail upgrades previously ordered from Best Buy. Can I use one of them to upgrade the new computer and use the "Free" upgrade to ugrade a different computer?

Upgrade Media - Clean Install From Installed Win 7 Upgrade ?
I did an in place upgrade of Windows 7 home premium and I am thinking about trying to do a clean install since the start up time after the upgrade is brutal (about 10 minutes). My question: I know you can do a clean install using a custom install but do I have to re-install vista first or can I just boot up to my working Win 7 install, put the disk in and do a custom install?

BSOD - I Had Been Having Regular Crashes
Hey Tom's! I hope everyone is well. I'm returning to the community with a problem I was having before. I have just upgraded from Windows 7 RC to Win 7 32 bit Enterprise Edition with no problems. Did a fresh install and had it formatted. Just got my first BSOD/crash, and I had been having regular crashes (about once every 4-5 days) I don't think it's hardware related, probably driver, so I was hoping people could help narrow it down and kill this problem for good. Here's the text of the BSOD: Problem signature: Problem Event Name:BlueScreen OS Version:6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.4 Locale ID:1033 Additional information about the problem: BCCode:1000008e BCP1:C0000005 BCP2:828D1082 BCP3:8C28D920 BCP4:00000000 OS Version:6_1_7600 Service Pack:0_0 Product:256_1 Files that help describe the problem: C:WindowsMinidump

Standard DVD Playback Regular Stutter
I am seeing a problem with the Win7 beta and Standard DVD playback. I have only installed Beta, and installed the necessary drivers. No MCE setup other than the minimum (i.e. no tuners or anything in use) If I play back a standard DVD in MCE it will slow down and stutter (similar to what you see when layers changes sometimes) every so often. It seems to be about every 15-20 minutes this will happen for a little bit. I'm not sure about the timing, but it seems relatively regular. I was thinking maybe the CD drive is spinning down and then having to spin back up every now and then? But i can't find any power options related to the CD drive... Any ideas?

IDE Or AHCI For SATA Drives (SSD And Regular)
I would like the good and bad about running your SATA drives in IDE and AHCI modes. I have 3 drives. 1 SSD and 2 normal hard drives. Does it even make a difference? I have an Esata bracket that I want to run in AHCI mode but how about the normal system and data drives? What is the best way to set up drives?

Difference Between US And EU Hardware
just wondered if theres any difference between hardware bought from the US and their EU equivalents. this is specific to RAM and Graphics Cards, but other info would be much appreciated also. EDIT: Lets make this a multi subject thread. This here is my upgrade list: Processor: AMD Phenom II 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0ghz AM2+ RAM: 2x2 240pin 1066 (havent chosen a particular brand yet) Graphics: HiS ATI Radeon HD4870 1GB Crossfire Ready (if i have enough to get 2 at the same time...) Mobo: ASUS M3A79-T Delux A black suit. Parts kept: PSU : 700W something. HDD : 350GB 7200 samsung something Optical drives : CD/DVD burner, DVD player, multi card reader Case: Xclio something something. My main query is related to wether if i get certain products from the us (gfx and ram, prolly the processor too) do they differ from the EU versions? is there a reason why the UK seems hellbound on overcharging me? ALSO im looking on advice for Mobo and Ram, since I dont REALLY know enough about them/various companies to make an edumacated guess.

Difference Between Language
Does anybody here was able to see the difference between a Windows 7 installation disk in another language than English and a Windows 7 installed in English + a language pack (MUI)? Personally, I don't see any. But I think my MUI (French) is still incomplete because there is some places in Windows which are still in English. Note: The question is valid for any language.

M-Audio Delta Family 64-bit Driver
I had a little trouble getting the driver files out of the Vista x64 installer (M-Audio don't make it easy!) so thought I'd post them up here for anyone to use. I am running Windows 7 x64 and my Audiophile 2496 works perfectly with this driver, which is the new Vista x64 SP1 driver just out of beta (01/27/20095.10.00.5069v3).

Intel 945 Mobile Family Compatibility
I've been trying to find out everywhere to see if my graphics card is capable of Windows 7. I'm having a real hard time. My card is Intel 945 Mobile Family. My brother installed Windows 7 and his card was outdated so now everything is "blurry" and not nice looking. He couldn't downgrade so he bought a Mac. So yeah, I'd try it out on my computer if I could fork out 1k to get a new computer, but I simply can't. The windows update advisor says that my graphics adapter isn't "supported" with Windows Aero. The requirements state that it needs 128MB, which I believe I have 256. It's getting annoying that the Windows Advisor says that it's not supported, yet Best Buy is selling my same exact computer with Windows 7 with the same graphics card. I'm conflicted; I don't want to mess up my computer, yet I want Windows 7.

Setting Up A Home Media Network Using Media Center And Media Extenders
I am trying to setup a media network for my new home that's being built. What I want to accomplish is a network that can feed my 5 TVs live feeds or be able to record up to 4 or so TV shows at once. But I wanted it all to come from one centeralized location. I know that I can do this with Windows Home Server and Windows 7 Media Center and then I know that I need a media extender for each TV. Other than that what else do I need? Can I just have one cable box plugged into the Server and have that feed all the TVs or do I need one cable box for each TV and do I need a Tuner Card in the Server for each TV? How many TV Cards can Windows 7 support at one time? How many Media Extenders can support one TV Card? I want to store my movies and music and pictures in this same server that I'm using for the live TV and DVR so what specs on the server do you recommend?
