Difference Between Upgrade And Custom Installation Regarding System Performance?

I have brand new notebook with Vista Business  (only OS and some drivers factory installed) and I would like to upgrade to Windows7 Ultimate. Is there any difference between upgrade and custom instalation regarding system performance? In which case would be notebook faster?

Is the time to "Upgrade from vista to 7 supposed to be way longer then it would to do just a clean install? (For example, hanging at 18% for a while while installing during upgrade).

Performance Difference Between Windows 7 Clean Install And Upgrade Install
Does anyone know whether there is a difference in performance between doing a clean install of Windows 7 vs upgrading Vista? Any better stability? I'm just wondering whether it's worth the trouble of the clean install.

Difference Between Custom Install And Deleting A Partition, Formatting, And Installing
I have a few questions about installing Windows 7.

(1)  I'm preparing to upgrade my Windows XP Pro SP3 machine to Windows 7 Pro.  I'm been planning my "attack" on this for several weeks now and recently settled on using Windows Easy Transfer and installing onto my current Windows partition.  I understood that this would create a Windows.Old folder with all my old files and settings but that I would nonetheless have a "clean" install of Windows 7.

However, this article on cnet.com leads me to believe otherwise:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-19882_3-10386856-250.html?tag=TOCmoreStories.0.

Essentially, the author seems to suggest that custom install "set up [his] computer more-or-less cleanly with Windows 7."  He goes on to say that "I really wanted to do was re-format my hard drive and start from a blank slate on my computer," and that he eventually worked up the courage to simply reformat his partition (rather than install over it) reinstall Windows 7 again.

This absolutely, positively, confuses me.  What on earth is the difference between using the Custom Install option to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7 and formatting the partition and installing clean?  I thought using Custom Install was a clean install - am I missing something?

(2) If I do elect to simply format my existing partition and install Windows 7 there, will I even be able to use that option since I am installing an "upgrade" version of Windows 7?  The author in the article I linked to above was able to, and he notes that many others were able to as well, but he seems to make the suggestion that some have had troubles.  Does anyone have any information on this?

(3) Finally, I'd like to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7.  Currently, I am using a 32-bit version of Windows XP.  Will that limit my ability to install the 64-bit version of Windows 7?

Custom Installation, Error Message 0x80070057
I managed a to install Win7 Professional in place of XP Pro.  After, I realised that I had used my XP setup with sytem files in C 40GB and programs in D 100GB, both partions on the C drive.  I decided that this might cause problems in the future and so I decided to repeat the custom install with C drive as 1 partition.  Didn't spot an option to reformat C.  The program would not install, error message 0x80070057.

Searching the internet and Microsoft indicated that this an error associated with Explorer 2007!   My C drive is 2 SATA drives setup as RAID 1.In frustration I reformated my 2 hard drives using my 2nd PC (running XP pro), cleared the CMOS and re-entered all required settings.  So that I would have a clear fresh PC setup.  I probably attempted 6 or 7 custom installations, each time getting the same message that the drive can not be formatted.

Then I spotted the advanced symbol and dicovered commands for Format, partion, etc.  Only by experiment did I discover that I needed to partition the drive for Win7.  It seems that Win7 does not set up new empty drives automatically and no guidance given to the installer.  XP pro installation does this automatically, perhaps Microsoft should look into this.

Difference In Media Between Regular Upgrade And Family Pack
I have just spent the last three hours driving around from store to store to try to buy a copy of the Family Upgrade Pack for my kid's computers.  No one had it at retail.  I need to order it online but I'd like to get started on the installs now.

Is it possible to use the media I already own (Win 7 Home Premium Upgrade), install it as a trial without the serial number, and then use the serial number that comes with the Family Pack that will be coming in the next few days?  Weekends are best for these projects but they are looking for the upgrade asap.

Install Wont Recognize Any Hard Drives During Custom Installation
I am having trouble trying to install windows 7 64 bit rc.  I have already dual  booted windows 7 32 bit on this computer with Vista 32 but wanted to take full advantage of the RAM so deleted Windows 7 32 bit.  When I try to do an install from the installation disk I get to the point where I select custom installation and when the next screen comes up it is not recognizing ANY of my hard drive partitions.  I have went in and made sure the partitions appear to be correct.

I am on a Dell Lap with an AMD Turion 64x2 with 4GB of RAM.  I am not sure what is causing this as I have also installed windows 7 on my desktop and haven't had any trouble.  As I stated previously I have also installed on the computer I am currently having the issue's with but deleted to install the 64 bit version.  Does anybody have any idea's why its not recognizing my hard drive.

Any help or idea's would be greatly appreciated.  Oh and by the way been running windows 7 on both of my pc's for about 3 months now and it is GREAT!!!!  I hope I can get the 64 bit installed to take advantage of the extra RAM (even though its only a little more that half a GB).  Also has anybody been able to download Java on windows 7 yet.  I havent tried for a while now but was unable to a while back.

Performance Index Reboots System
Latest x64 RC is installed & runs great (multi-boot & other OSs run fine). I tried to run the Performance Index & it reboots near the end of CPU tests.  Has anyone else run into this?

Specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 Processor 955 (3.2GHz) AM3
Biostar TA790GX A3+
STT DDR3-1333 4GB (2x2GB)

Not over clocked, but it's tempting.

Custom Upgrade - Advanced Options Greyed Out
I have 2 hard drives in a Raid 0 configuration. On this configuration, I have 2 partitions, C and D. C currently has Vista on it.

booted from win 7 64bit disk. Select Custom. Select advanced options and highlight the C partition. All of the advanced options are greyed out (format, delete, etc).

If I select the D partition, all the advance options are available, but obviously I don't want to install to the D drive.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why the options are greyed out on my C partition? could it have to do with the Raid 0? It came from Dell like this.

Upgrade Performance Windows 7 Vs Vista
Windows 7 vs. Vista - Upgrade Performance

The latest Windows 7 client has its precursor beat in terms of upgrade speed

Windows 7 is âoutrunningâ Windows Vista in more ways than one. Microsoft has labored to ensure that the latest Windows client outpaces its precursor in a variety of scenarios, from startup time, to common usage tasks, and to shutdown, to name just a few. Another aspect in which Windows 7 has Vista beat is upgrade performance. According to Chris Hernandez, from the Windows Deployment team, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 to Windows 7 upgrades are at least 5% faster than Vista SP1 to Vista SP1 upgrades.

In fact, when it set out to do the operating system upgrade measuring contest, Microsoft was looking for at least a 5% threshold for upgrade scenarios involving Vista SP1 to Windows 7 was in comparison to jumps from Vista SP1 to Vista SP1. The Redmond-based company explained that the Windows Upgrade team monitored the Windows 7 upgrade performance during the development process, and that it compared it against its Vista baseline.

âThe reason we choose to use a Vista SP1 -> Vista SP1 upgrade instead of Windows XP -> Vista as our baseline was for the following: Windows XP is a vastly different operating system compared to Vista and an upgrade from Windows XP -> Vista would not be a good comparison with Vista -> Windows 7. Windows XP did not support 64-bit upgrades and we wanted to track 64-bit upgrade performance as well as 32-bit upgrades for Windows 7. Vista SP1 -> Vista SP1 is a valid upgrade path that ********s all upgrade code (this upgrade is commonly used by Product Support Services for a repair scenario),â Hernandez explained.

Now, 5% doesnât make a huge performance gap between the two operating systems. Still, users have to keep in mind that Microsoft used the Vista SP1 baseline comparison, and while I have heard countless complaints about Vista RTM, the barrage of criticism subsided with the advent of Service Pack 1, indicating a far superior user experience.

At the same time, the vast majority of end users donât actually perform benchmarks, or monitor performance metrics. For them increased performance in every aspect of the operating system, including upgrade scenarios, is a matter of perception. In this regard, 5% is more than enough to deliver a palpable impression of boosted upgrade performance for Windows 7 in comparison to Vista.

âThe upgrade performance tests used the metric of total upgrade time to gauge how Windows 7 upgrade performed against Vista upgrade. The tests were designed to measure total upgrade time simulating different user profiles (with different data set sizes, number of programs installed and settings) against different hardware profiles,â Hernandez added.

ICH7 - Greatly Reduced Performance Since Upgrade
This was an actual upgrade from Vista Ultimate x64 to Windows 7 Ultimate x64, not a clean install
Hardware - NC8430 business class notebook.  Core 2 Duo, ICH7 chipset, Seagate 250 GB 5400 RPM drive, 3GB RAM.  Had been running Vista Ultimate x64 for last year.  Performance rating 4.2 which was limited by graphics.  Now it has dropped to 3.0, limited by hard drive transfer speed. I have tried native SATA modes enabled and disabled, write caching is enabled.  Everything also perceptively seems much slower.

Win 7 Upgrade Degrades Video Performance
Upgraded an HP desktop from Vista to Win 7.

It has onboard Intel graphics, set up with 64meg on the card and using 192 meg of system memory.

On vista, the system had a graphics performance measurement of about 3.5. On win 7 it drops to 3.0 and sites like youtube are measurably choppier.

I upgraded the chipset bios, I have not upgraded the system bios (cause HP doesn't support it yet), the monitor driver is also hp and missing (generic monitor).

Are there system level options I should look into or look into new hw?

Win 7 Installation To System With 5 Logical Or System Hard Drives Drives.
I am planning to upgrade my XP Professional system via a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64bit.  The hard drive sub-system consists of a 12 drive RAID array that presents 5 68GB logical hard drives to the operating system.  Each of these drives are currnetly partitioned into single FAT32 partitions (C: through G:).I understand that the C: drive will have to be converted to NTFS but as I understand the installation process the data on that drive will have to be saved to an external drive and then restored.

I would prefer to stick with FAT32 and retain the ability to dual boot to MS-DOS - but I can live with it.  Drives D: through G: are another matter. The drives are used mainly for data but there are some programs that I have installed in "E:Program Files" over the years to keep the C:  drive from running out of space.

I realize that all programs will have to be re-installed loosing that option is not that big a deal. The question boils down to: Do drives D: through G: have to be converted to NTFS or will Windows 7 live with the existing FA32 setup?   Also, I saw some chatter suggesting that it might be possile to install Windows 7 on a FAT32 partition-- if that is the case this whole question becomes moot.

System Unexpectedly Rebooted During Installation
I am installing Windows 7. I deleted all partitions during the install setup and created a new one for Windows to install on (plus the 100MB partition it created itself). The installation seems to go fine until the "completing installation" phase. The computer reboots and the Windows 7 desktop appears but an error window pops up that says "The system unexpectedly rebooted during the installation. The installation can not be completed." It also tells me to restart the installation (which I've done several times with the same result each time).

I know that the system meets (actually exceeds) the minimum requirements. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or what could be causing this problem?

System Freezes During Final Reboot For Installation
I have tried 3 various ways to install 7.

1. Fresh install to a new partition.

2. Upgrade from Vista to 7.

3. Deleted and used my main partition making a new partition.Every time I try to install I get through all the steps with ease.  When I get to the finalizing windows it goes to a black screen and then continues to what would normally be a reboot process to come back to the Windows desktop. At this point it freezes and stays on the black screen with no hard drive movement whatsoever.

I've left it in this state for over a half an hour before doing a manual restart (knowing that Vista also does this sometimes and usually continues after no more than 15 minutes). Once back up, the install fails and has to be completely restarted, of course having the same results each time.

Hardware.Asus P5RD1-Vm system board,Intel Pentium D 945 Dual Core 3.4ghz,2 GB of DDR pc3200,Nvidia 8800 GT graphics card w/512 ddr2,2 IDE WD hard drives, 1-80gb, 1-250gb1 SATA  WD Hard drive, 250gb. Any ideas would be helpful.

Error: The System Administrator Has Set Policies To Prohibit This Installation
I have a clean install of Win 7 x64 Pro, and am running no 3rd party AV software.  I am the only user and an administrator.  To install DeLorme Topo USA for my GPS, the app wants me to first install C++ redistributable from the CD.  Every time I try Windows throws the error "The system administrator has set policies to prohibit this installation".  I have gone into the UAC and made sure nothing inhibits installing new programs.

I have disabled windows protection and disconnected from the Internet.  I right clicked and selected "run as an Administrator", which didn't work because Windows "don't think I are one"!  I installed Visual Studio to try it as a work-around.  I even gave myself a password to make sure that I'm logged in as the administrator.  It was a long shot that didn't pay off.

I can't find any information about this in TechNet, nor on the Internet.  It may be a related symptom that there are shortcuts in my user named folder that I cannot launch or delete, because "user access is denied".Can someone help?  I and totally frustrated with this, obviously it never happened with XP Pro.

Installation Guide For Installing Win7 On A 2 Drive SSD / HDD System ?
I have been searching for a guide to installing Windows 7 on a 2-drive system; a 30GB SSD and a 1.5 TB HDD.  I would like to minimize space on the SSD by placing the read-mostly parts of the operating system there.  The write-lots parts will go on the HDD.

I am also interested in tweaks to reduce any file system journaling that Windows may be doing.  I know that modern SSD's can tolerate writes but I am worried about degrading the SSD's performance over time.

Base System Device Drivers Not Installed After Win 7 Pro 64 Bit Clean Installation
I've just clean installed Win 7 Pro 64 bit on a Dell Inspiron 640m laptop with Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor (original OS was Vista Ultimate). All appears to have gone well but on checking Device Manager there's a Base System Device entry in Other Devices group which is showing an exclamation mark. On opening this entry it shows "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)" Clicking Update Driver and searching the Internet fails to locate a driver.

I didn't install an Intel chipset after the Win 7 install (this computer is almost 3 years old and Dell haven't provided a chipset for Win 7 so I'm assuming chipset support is included in Win 7 out of the box).Could anyone advise if the above is likely to cause any significant problems?

Difference Between US And EU Hardware
just wondered if theres any difference between hardware bought from the US and their EU equivalents.

this is specific to RAM and Graphics Cards, but other info would be much appreciated also.

EDIT: Lets make this a multi subject thread. This here is my upgrade list:

Processor: AMD Phenom II 940 Black Edition Deneb 3.0ghz AM2+

RAM: 2x2 240pin 1066 (havent chosen a particular brand yet)

Graphics: HiS ATI Radeon HD4870 1GB Crossfire Ready (if i have enough to get 2 at the same time...)

Mobo: ASUS M3A79-T Delux

A black suit.

Parts kept:

PSU : 700W something.

HDD : 350GB 7200 samsung something

Optical drives : CD/DVD burner, DVD player, multi card reader

Case: Xclio something something.

My main query is related to wether if i get certain products from the us (gfx and ram, prolly the processor too) do they differ from the EU versions? is there a reason why the UK seems hellbound on overcharging me?

ALSO im looking on advice for Mobo and Ram, since I dont REALLY know enough about them/various companies to make an edumacated guess.

Difference Between Language
Does anybody here was able to see the difference between a Windows 7 installation disk in another language than English and a Windows 7 installed in English + a language pack (MUI)?

Personally, I don't see any. But I think my MUI (French) is still incomplete because there is some places in Windows which are still in English.

Note: The question is valid for any language.
