Built-in H 264 Codec Glitches
I am having troubles with the Win7 built-in H264 codec. It seems to be buggy and produces some blocky artifacts in a few of my videos (I am trying to play a MP4 container with H264/AAC).
This shouldn't be too much of a problem since 3rd party codecs do render the video just fine. But...
I can use these 3rd party codecs in other DirectShow players, but WMP always seems to fall back to the built-in codec, whatever I try!
What can MS do to fix this situation? I don't really care whether the built-in codec gets fixed, or WMP loads 3rd party plug-in, but as it currently stands, I can't watch my video in WMP.

Problem With Default H.264 Codec In Media Player / Media Center
There is a problem with the new default H264 codec in Windows 7 I have around 380 DVDs ripped to H264 by using Xillisoft DVD Ripper (apple tv h264 profile) bit rate max 800, frame rate 25 Now in Vista media center all of these movies played just fine (using the Community Codec Pack) Windows 7 default codec pack and only about 10 of the ripped films actually work, the rest of them are just a black screen, some play with sound, some dont play at all. This is when I try and play them in Win7 Media Player or Media Center. Now if I use Quicktime or another media player (VLC for instance) using the CCCP codec pack, they work perfectly fine in windows 7 (but still dont work in Win 7 Media Player or Media Center). Some something is seriously screwed in the Microsoft codecs

Explorer Glitches
I am currently running Windows 7 RC on a number of test beds, and one of them has been showing up consistent issues with Windows Explorer. The machine in question is a Toshiba Satellite A300, Centrino Duo 2.13GHz, 4GB Ram, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. My main concerns are thus- Frequently, when windows explorer is opened, it takes a long time to show up the computer drives. The progress/address bar takes almost 2 minutes to finish, and such the drives take as long to show. All icons (bar network) on the left pane continually show the spinning magnifying glass. I have rebuilt the search index, and subsequently have been through services.msc and switched off the indexing service (manual start), and restarted many times. Explorer is still doing the same thing. Also, intermittently, the Windows Explorer window will not load up at all (The start bar stays present however). When it is launched, an error dialog is displayed announcing 'The remote procedure call failed" and Explorer will not start. It takes a reboot to rectify. The RPC service is running. This particular system was an inplace upgrade from a clean install of Vista Home Premium SP1. Both my other test laptop (an MSI-GX600-08, clean install) and test desktop (acer Aspire M5630, clean install after XP Home) are working fine, and as such, I am lost.

Performance Issue, Glitches, Blinking, Cpu 100%
Too many glitches(windows, icons, everything blinks at different times and sometimes just after blinking for a while, they go black and as soon as I get the cursor over it it stops). I have a CPU meter and is running all the way to 100% almost all the time, with any Program, window opening or task that I try to perform. Because of that is running extremely slow. I am not a computer expert as I see most people are in here, so instead of trying to fix it my self and making it worst. I took it to "Geek Squad", in Best Buys, to get it fix, and after 2 day with them they told me that there was nothing they could do. They did see the problem, but they didn´t know how to fix it.

H.264 Hardware Acceleration And Ati Video Cards
I'm using an ati 4870 and a hauppauge HVR-2200 tuner card to watch New Zealand freeview (h.264). The high definition channels - tv 1, 2 and 3 and the HD preview channel - are working somewhat ok (though with some issues of stuttery playback especially after changing channels, although this is relatively minor). However, the remainder of the channels fail to play back properly. My tuner card finds them fine, and when I try and watch them I get the audio tracks fine also. However, the video is always incredibly stuttery and full of artifacts and is often predominantly green. It's not at all watchable. I've heard that this is a recurring problem for people trying to watch hardware decoded h.264 on an ATI graphics card on any operating system. So my question is this: Has anyone found a solution? Is there a way to tell media center not to use hardware decoding and use software decoding instead?

Media Player H.264 Diamond ATI Radeon HD 2600XT
I think i found a bug related to WMP12/Media Foundation and H.264 video files. Here is my PC specs: ATI2600XT (using ATI latest window 7 beta drivers 8.12) / Intel dual core / dual monitor setup (PC monitor res = 1680x1050 and HDTV = 1080p). the problem happens when both monitors set in extended mode and trying to play H.264 video with WMP12, the screen is black, closing WMP12 gives me "Media Foundation Protected Pipeline has stopped working" error, i already sent this error report to MS but no fix so far. now what i did to fix the video is by pressing Win + P and disabling my HDTV, now the video is playing however i can see green artifacts on screen or slow playback so it's not 100% fixed. i hope this is fixed upon Win7 release or perhaps a patch. see picture: http://i43.tinypic.com/2ir3ewp.jpg NOTE: MS generic drivers cannot play the file at all, whether HDTV is on or not.

Problem Streaming H.264 To Xbox 360 Via Media Center
Microsoft have done a great job with the Windows 7 RC. I can now stream MP4 movies (H.264 with 5.1 AAC audio) from my desktop pc running Windows 7 to my Vista laptop flawlessly with both media player and media center. The problem I have is when trying to stream these files from Windows 7 to media center on my Xbox 360 Elite. All files are encoded in the same format but some play ok while others cause the screen to go blank and freeze after a few seconds. Afterwards, the only thing I can do is exit to the dashboard or switch the console off. In a couple of instances I have been able to avoid the problem by fast forwarding a few seconds into the film before the freeze occurs but this does not always work. It seems that there is a compatibility issue with the Xbox 360 media center and MP4 files (H.264 5.1 AAC audio). My network is wired and testing shows I have healthy bandwith so I don't think that is the problem. Has anybody else noticed anything similar? Is there an easy way to overcome this hurdle? I have stacks of MP4 files with 5.1 aac audio and I thought that with Windows 7 I had found a solution to a niggling issue (yes, I should've realized that H.264 is only supported with 2 channel audio on the Xbox when I bought it but I was too excited at the time). Evidently, this is not the case and the Xbox 360 remains a redundant feature in my living room.

HP PAVILION Built-in Webcam
Who knows how many people complained for following issue BUILT-IN WEBCAM WON'T WORK UNDER WINDOWS 7RC! All right, I have the same problem, but I just could't find similar thread on any forum. So, I installed win7 RC over win 7 beta (clean install not an update). Everything went smoothly, drivers all found and instaled, device manager showing no yellow exclamation triangles. Every bit of hardware is in place, everything works perfectly according to system diagnostic. BUT, webcam shows no picture. Driver is properly installed and has no collisions with other system resources. Interesting thing was, that camera was working excellent under win 7 beta. I don't know what has changed in win 7RC, but camera just won't start. If anyone has any solution or similar issue, please don't hesitate to post a reply. Oh yeah, my configuration: HP PAVILION dv 6670el Entertainment PC intel core2duo 2.0 GHz 2GB RAM 160GB HDD NVIDIA 8400gs video card HP built-in webcam (at least that's what system information says) 1.3Mpix

Why No Built-in RAW Image Support ?
There is a RAW image viewer power toy available for XP which doesn't seem to work with 7. It would be nice to not even have to go through the trouble of installing the power toys and just have them built right in to the OS. Another useful one that comes to mind is the Image Resizer. I think one of my biggest gripes with all versions of Windows is having to go and install applications that are used for common computing tasks such as viewing / editing images.

Win 7 Built In Backup System
Question about Windows 7 Ultimate's built in backup system. If I create a full system backup of my "C" drive, then do a restore, will it just install the "C" drive partition only, or will it overwrite the entire HD, thus wipping the rest of the partitions? Not looking to have the other partitions wiped! I did some looking around, but that question/issue doesn't seem to be addressed.

Built-in Support For Bluray Playback / Burning
Confirmed by Mr. Sinofsky himself, there will be no native BluRay support in Windows 7. However, BluRay Drive makers and OEMs will be able to extend Windows Media Center to support playback. What will be supported in Windows 7 though, is the burning of BRD discs. Here’s the email that was forwarded to me from our loyal reader Theodore. I did make a WHOIS check to make sure that it was Sinofsky himself. Location was indeed from: United States Redmond Microsoft Corp.

MSi GT735 Built In Webcam Not Working
The webcam manufacturer is listed as Chicony ,(Sonix260) It appears in the Device Stage as "CNF7231", and in the properties window has the following device id string: USBVID_04F2&PID_B073&REV_1208&MI_00 I have tried the driver that is auto-installed by the OS, the drivers available from MSi's website, the drivers for other models in the same series (laptops with the same chassis and same webcam installed). I've tied using installers and manual installs. Tried in both compatibility mode and running as administrator, and all combinations with and without these. I tried all the drivers on sonix website and i've tried drivers from MS driver database. I've installed a play-tool called Crazy Talk Cam Suite - which reports that there is no camera found? but there is a camera, it is at least present, and drivers are loaded, and report that they are working. Microsoft LiveCam also doesn't work. Skype shows a black screen, though it finds the camera. The camera has a small yellow LED which illuminates when the camera is in use... this never goes on. I have verified that the camera is still working in Linux, so there appears to be no fault with the hardware. I notice that MANY other users are reporting that their webcams are not working - especially internal ones. Is this a problem with Win7 or the drivers?

No Built-in Driver: Marvell Yukon NIC
From my understanding the Marvell Yukon NIC is quite popular on several motherboard manufacturers, including Asus. I have an Asus P5B-Deluxe and was shocked to see after loading W7 I had no network connection. Thankfully I had a laptop which was working, so I could download the Marvell driver. Given that NICs are vitally important, I hope MS can include Marvell drivers in the RC and RTM releases.  I'm using this driver: http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?driverId=154

Generic Drivers For Built In For Laptop Card Readers
If you have a laptop and have a problem getting the built in SD / MMC card reader to work then I've found the "generic" one from the Twinhead german site does OK. For X-64 use the Vista driver. Expanding the zip file will give you the 32 and 64 bit drivers. The most "Generic" drivers seem to come from the F11Y laptop series but choose from other models if this doesn't work. Most of these drivers are pretty "Generic" so should work with a huge amount of hardware irrespective of your actual model. HP/DELL/COMPAQ owners are usually pretty lucky as the manufacturers sites are pretty OK. It's when you buy essentially an unknown brand of laptop where you can't find the "manufacturers" site as the laptop is badged under a different name. From the link just click on the Notebook model and get the drivers. No stupid registration or "Let's scan your computer to see what driver you need" -- and then you are re-directed to a PAY service or more adware nonsense -- I HATE those sites --what if I'm using a different computer to get the driver than the one I install it on.

Dell E6400 Laptop USB (Built-In) Webcam Problem
After searching the web and this forum for some answers I realized there are many many problems with USB Webcams from different manufacturers. (please see the link below). My PC is fairly new Dell E6400 Laptop (Duo II with 4GB of RAM and nVidia video card with 256MB) with integrated Creative Webcam and despite all my efforts, installing different drivers in different compatiibility modes including the one released by Dell/Creative only few weeks ago - my webcam does not work. The driver is installed and the device is being reported by Device Manager as working properly yet none of the applications such as Windows Live Messenger not Skype can utilize the video stream, reporting inability to connect to webcam and that a "different application is utilizing camera". Since I found threads regarding many different webcam vendors (including MS), PC configurations and drivers involved I suspect that this is an issue with Windows 7 itself and not the webcams nor their drivers. BTW. My webcam was properly working under Vista 64 i.e. before the upgrade to Win7 RC (7100). I am frsustrated that there is no release regarding this issue anb no available solution / fix to the problem. What is going on?
