how good are the notebook/laptop ati video cards, do they work, is it better than nvidia, how reliable are they and such?

H.264 Hardware Acceleration And Ati Video Cards
I'm using an ati 4870 and a hauppauge HVR-2200 tuner card to watch New Zealand freeview (h.264). The high definition channels - tv 1, 2 and 3 and the HD preview channel - are working somewhat ok (though with some issues of stuttery playback especially after changing channels, although this is relatively minor). However, the remainder of the channels fail to play back properly. My tuner card finds them fine, and when I try and watch them I get the audio tracks fine also. However, the video is always incredibly stuttery and full of artifacts and is often predominantly green. It's not at all watchable. I've heard that this is a recurring problem for people trying to watch hardware decoded h.264 on an ATI graphics card on any operating system. So my question is this: Has anyone found a solution? Is there a way to tell media center not to use hardware decoding and use software decoding instead?

Old Video Cards
Is there by any chance that windows 7 be built with drivers for old AGP graphics cards? Noticed that when it detected my INNO3D MX440 video card it says that it's only a standard VGA graphics card. How will this OS replace XP/VISTA or should I say how will Microsoft can sell this OS to those users that has XP/VISTA and want to shift to Windows 7 if they have encountered the same problem as I did? Been using Windows 7 for about 3 days now and I can say that I'm impressed with it's performance compared to Vista.

ATI Cards And Samsung LCD
i just installed the latest build of Windows 7 (build 7100). and there are a few problems with my graphics options. There are 2 systems that i tried this on and both are having the same problem. The first setup has a Ati Radeon X1650 by MSI, and the drivers install, signed by WDDM. Now the monitor/tv that i am using is a 42inch LCD TV, and has the 1920x1080 resolution, that is its native resolution. Windows 7, supports the resolution and has it as the recommended resolution, however, when i select it, my monitor says "mode not supported" this is the same problem i have with the HD2600XT card from ATI. Both of these cards work in Vista Ultimate, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, and XP Pro SP3 and XP Home SP3, and even tried Server 2008 and server 2003. all of those OS's work with the native resolution on the monitor except the Windows 7 builds. anyone have an idea why this would be?? also, for the HD2600XT i did install the latest ati driver 9-4, and nothing is fixed. right now i am running it at 1280x768, but its skewed. if anyone has any info on this it would be great, as i have tried everything. i have also tried installing the 9-3 drivers on both cards, manually and using the installs. the manual way was to unzip the driver package and in device manager install the drivers myself. The one system i have plugged into it now is a Shuttle Barebone SG31G2B, 4 GB of ddr2/800 ram, quad core q6600 2.4ghz, and the hd 2600xt.

Just a thought. I'm currently running an XFX 260 Black Edition on my Asus P5Q Pro MB. I still have my old card- A BFG 8800GTS OC 512MB. I kept meaning to ebay it but never got round to it. Is there any way I could usefuly use it in my present set up?

Multiple Video Cards
I have a ATI Radeon HD 4800 that I use with DVI for my main display. I recently installed a Radeon 7500 PCI with the sole purpose of using the S-Video output to stream video to my TV. Under the device Manager I get the following error with the new card PCI bus 7, device 1, function 0 "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12) If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system." What can be going on?

ATI Mobility HD 3400 Series Cards
i went into Windows 7 64 bit, Mobility Radeon, Mobility Radeon HD 300 Series and installed their driver. Everything went smoothly. But when i get into any game i get horrible performance compared to the original driver Windows 7 installled automatically (WDDM 1.1). My framerates halfed the usual ones o got, and sometimes less. Can anybody confirm if this is normal considering these are beta drivers, or am i unlucky here? I was forced to roll back my driver and now im getting much stable fps...

Two Video Cards With Two Different Drivers Not Working
I have two different ATI cards installed in one system, each with their own 22" HP LCD. One is an ATI FireGL V5600 for my CAD applications and the other is an X1900XT for Left4Dead. When I ran Windows Update after I installed Windows 7, it immediately downloaded an updated driver for the V5600 (8.623, I think) but when it installed it, it disabled the X1900XT. I went to the Device Manager, uninstalled the X1900XT, then Scanned for Hardware Changes, it finds the X1900XT, installs the driver and it works again. Unfortunately, it also reverts the driver for the V5600 back to 8.56.1.15 which isn't even a valid driver for the V5600 as seen on this page. I'm not sure why I can't have independent drivers for each card. I know for a fact that this is supported in XP as I have my system dual booting with XP and it work perfectly there (see photo 1 and photo 2 it's hard to tell, but both of those screenshots are from XP with each card having independent drivers). The downside is that my CAD apps don't recognize the V5600 with driver 8.56.1.15 as the workstation card it is, and my graphics are severely crippled in those apps. I would like to report this to Microsoft, but unlike in RC1 there is no way to report a bug.

Two Video Cards In Win 7 X64
I recently built a new machine that I have three monitors for. When I only had two monitors I had this card installed: Newegg.com - PNY XLR8 VCG98GTEE5XEB GeForce 9800 GT EE 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards This card works perfectly fine and I had no issues with it and I plan to continue using it. However, now that I have three monitors and I need another video card I'm running into a lot of issues. I tried installing another PCIe 16 card I had lying around but my setup didn't seem to recognize the new card. I do not have the exact model number on that since it was given to me, but I believe it was a GeForce 6 series card. I also tried a PCI ATI Radeon card that I had laying around found here Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100945L-BK Radeon 7000 64MB 64-bit DDR PCI Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards This card showed up in the device manager as a Standard VGA adapater but in the properties it had an error saying "The device could not start". So I guess my question is this: What is the cheapest way to get three monitors working on my windows 7 64 bit machine? I want to use the first card I linked to and one other one. Dual Video Cards Causes UI To Hang
I'm currently running the 64 bit version of windows 7 professional and have two video cards in my machine (nvidia 8800 and 6200) driving three monitors. After much frustration, I managed to narrow my explorer crashes (more on that in a sec) down to having the monitor attached to the 6200 enabled. As soon as I disabled it and only used the two monitors attached to the 8800, everything was fine. If I had all three displays active, the entire interface would become completely unresponsive (though I could still move the mouse) after some random period of time. I could routinely cause it to hang by minimizing and maximizing any window repeatedly. Once it stopped responding, I could ctrl + alt + del and log off/log on to restore things sometimes, while other times I'd have to reboot from that screen or hard reset my computer. I tried using the default nvidia drivers that came with win 7 as well as the newest ones (191.07) and had the same results with both. Given that the video cards use the same driver (and worked flawlessly in this configuration in vista), I wasn't anticipating having stability issues. My google searches haven't turned up much that has been helpful. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ATI Reduces Support For Older Graphics Cards
As time goes on and a product catalog grows, it's not unusual for a company to reduce and eventually eliminate support for older products. In the case of ATI, AMD's graphics division, a new decision to reduce support for older graphics chips is about to take effect. To date, ATI has provided a new WHQL certified driver every month to nearly every graphics card capable of DirectX 9 acceleration. That includes cards all the way back to 2002's Radeon 9700 Pro. After this month's Catalyst 9.3 release, that will not be the case. After Catalyst 9.3, products prior to the R6xx generation of graphics cards (that go by the Radeon HD 2000 series brand names) will be changed to "legacy support status." This means that these products will get quarterly WHQL driver updates, instead of monthly updates. AMD assures us that these products will still receive critical "hotfix" drivers if high-priority fixes are needed.

ATI 4850 Crossfirex Cards, Vista, And Lockups
I recently bought a new machine and thought it was going to blow my old machine out of the water. First it was latency issues in game that the game was actually unplayable. Next it was windows updater wouldn't stop running. My third and final problem i cant seem to get around is the game lockups. I have downloaded the latest drivers with all my software, I have uninstalled the game and reinstalled the game, I have pretty much done everything i can think of. The problem i have it that i load the game (accountname/password), click enter world, the game bar loads completely and right as the game is about to load it completely locks up, causeing me to manually shut it down. I have tried alot of things almost to the point where i am going to give up completely. I was told by the game provider that i needed to update all my drivers with my hardware and i have checked every single driver possible and all are up to date. Im no computer genius but if the game loads and everything and all of a sudden completely locks up, what would cause this? Obvioulsy some kind of hardware problem?!?

Problems With Nvidia Cards And Drivers
I have found that Geoforce/Quadro cards & Windows 7 beta drivers (x32 & x64) from Windows Update prevent a user's profile unloading from memory. This prevents roaming profiles from working properly for example. Increasing the Computer Config/Admin Templates/System/User Profiles/Maximum retries to unload and update user profile doesn't work either. This is also true for current nvidia drivers on Vista. Removing nvidia cards and using Intel motherboard graphic drivers or ATI cards alway fix the problem.

Dual Nvidia 6200 Cards
I Have two nvidia 6200 cards in an msi pm8m -vh motherboard one in the agp slot the other in a pci slot. Have updated the board to the latest Bios but this made no difference to what happens. Started with a clean instillation of win 7 rc1. With both cards installed the system would stat up and the four color screen would disappear and the screen would remain blank. Removed the pci card system would start up and work on the agp display ok. Reinstalled second 6200 card and after the four color start up screen disappeared the screen remained blank, via safe mode disabled the second 6200 card and the system would start up on one screen. Â if I use the control panel, via device manager, I can see both cards. Use the update driver button and having the microsoft wddm driver installed and shut down the computer, when the system reboots both screens work and the nvidia control panel Icon appears in the system and security section of the control panel. If I shut the computer down, when I start up again we end up with the blank screen after the startup screen diapears. If via safe mode I restore the system to pre wddm instillation and reinstall the wddm as above I can get both screens working again (and have done several times trying out different unsuccessful fixes) If i put the computer into sleep mode it will restart both screens, in hibernate mode it will not restart both screens. With both screens working and going via appearances and the advance tab the system has the nvida driver installed and will give driver details, when one screen is working the device manager says the nvidia driver is installed, if I go via appearances the system says the Microsoft vga driver is installed but can not detect the cards or driver number Any help would be appreciated as this setup works well on win xp sp3 and linux suse 11.1. Please include instruction if you require memory dumps or copies of system files as I have not delved into the heart of the windows system.

3 Monitor Setup With Dual Video Cards
I know some people have been asking questions concerning 3 monitors on Windows 7, but they don't answer the question for me (i think). My system is an ASUS P7P55D-E Pro, Core i7-860 2.8Ghz and dual GeForce GTX 275 1.7 GB. I've spent a good couple of hours to get this to work or reading up on it, but I just have a 3rd monitor sitting here.

Older Intel 82845G Video Cards
It appears there is no driver for the Intel 82845G integrated video card. I got it working in Vista by using the driver for the 82852/82855 GM/GME card but that doesn't exist in 7 either. Any alternatives or is there a driver for this out there somewhere?

Blue Screen Crashes With ATI Cards 3450 And 4830
The ATI drivers for WINDOWS 7 (Engineering sample WDDM v1.1) version 8.560 1.0 crash on a daily basis on a couple of machines, one running a 9550 quad core processor and one running the i940. Generally the screen will flicker, sometimes windows recovers, oven it shuts down. The error message is: Description: A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly. ATI Radeon Graphics Cards Multiple Monitor Problem
First off, I'm sorry if this should be in hardware compatiblity but I think since the card works with everything but multiple monitors that it is very compatible. Okay, the problem is whenever I use extended display, 1 screen flickers (the crt, the lcd does not) for about 30 seconds, then they both go black for 30 more seconds, then the desktop appears on both and the computer has froze. So I have to do a hard reboot and when it restarts I have to quickly go into screen resolution and switch to 1 display or it will happen again fast. I don't think its a problem with the video card cuz I had been using it in XP for a month (using dual-monitors) with no problems at all, and then I switched over to Windows7 and this problem started. Now I understand it could be a compatiblity problem or ATI's problem with a bad driver; I was just wondering if someone knows whats up. Oh and I've asked friends with ATI cards and they have the same problem while I have asked others with nVidea cards and they have no problems what so ever. My card is: RadeonHD 4850

Nvidia Graphics Cards Drivers Problems
People with Nvidia cards please visit the nvidia forum and let them know we are having problems with the cards/drivers. All of the nvidia cards are crashing an older golf game called Microsoft Links 2003. I would place a safe bet that Drivers for series 5000 to 9000 Nvidia Geforce AGP and PCI-e cards are the problem. I have posted my two cents at Nvidia's forum but they don't seem to want to respond to the few of us who have gone there to post our issues. Links 2003 is an old golf game that plays "perfectly" on late ATI cards. So you might say switch, right? NO way. I have a great system set up with all types of upgrades around my AMD Athlon 64x2 5000 dual processor and 8800 OC GT 512 MB PCI-e graphics card and 4 GB RAM. Not one glitch with the card in Windows 7 Home Premum 32 or 64 bit (except Links 2003). To replace the 8800 GT's would be another $200.00 for an ATI card that I do not/should not have to purchase. Problem With Triple Display And Two Different NVIDIA Cards.
I have a PCI-E Geforce 9800GT and a PCI 6200GT installed in my machine. I am not running SLI, obviously, I need the second card to run my third monitor. On Windows 7 I have problems when the 6200 is installed. The monitor that is attached to that card will go black until I drag a window to it. It is as if the screen isn't refreshing. When I drag the window over the background starts "painting" itself back. The entire desktop also appears to freeze. The computer isn't frozen because I still hear my emails and instant messages come in. It is like the computer is running fine in the background but none of the screens will update. This setup works flawlessly under Vista SP1 x64. I had this problem with Windows 7 Build 7000 and now Build 7100. I am assuming that this is an NVIDIA driver problem, I have ForceWare driver 185.81 As soon as I took out the 6200 the computer started running fine, but as I said, this setup worked in Vista.Â

3 Viewsonic 22" monitors and one Dell 24 inch monitor all running DVI cables. I have three of the video cards in the computer to run multiple monitors. Windows 7 has a feature where when you plug in a monitor, it auto detects it and then enables it and sets its proper screen resolution. The problem is that when I plug in more than one monitor, I get inconsistent results. Here are some examples: Example 1 that happens: I have two monitors plugged in and I plug in a third monitor. It enables it within Windows 7, but the monitor does not actually turn on. If I restart the computer, somtimes it will stay enabled and boot up with all three monitors on. sometimes when I reboot it, it again shows all three enabled but only two are actually on. This happens also when I plug a fourth or fifth monitor on. Sometimes two or three monitors will be on whereas one or two others will not be on but will show enabled in display properties. Example 2 that happens: Sometimes when I plug in a second, third, or fouth monitor, it will actually show an additional monitor as disabled. For example, if I have three monitors plugged in and it shows three monitors enabled (regardless if all three are on and working), and I plug a fourth monitor in, then it enables the fourth monitor, sometimes it turns on, sometimes it doesnt, and it also shows a "generic non-pnp monitor" as number FIVE. Even though only four displays are plugged in. I've seen this happen even if I plug in a third monitor (shows four, with 3 or number 4 disabled). If I try to enable that FIFTH "ghost" monitor, and click apply, it says "cannot save settings." You can see an example of this as an attachment. When I plugged in another monitor, it shrunk 2 and there is also a 5 the same size but disabled. Strangely enough, the 2 says the pnp monitor and 5 says the model number of the monitor. However, enabling 5 does not actually enable it and says that it cannot save settings. XPDM Compatibility - Troubleshooting For Older Video Cards
So for all of us with older notebooks, stuck with unsupported integrated graphics...Does anyone have any word on a fix for the XPDM driver instability problem? Any MS project engineers out there? I've been able to run the Vista XPDM driver for my intel 855GM, but only with the hardware acceleration turned almost all the way down.In fact, I've found that video actually runs faster with the standard Windows 7 VGA driver than the Vista XPDM driver with acceleration disabled. Needless to say, I don't expect miracles. I don't expect to ever run Aero, and I'm not looking for advanced 3D performance, but I would like to be able to run DVD's and video files as well as I was able in XP.
