XP Mode Freezes / Crashes Host

I'm running the RTM of W7 Ent on a Dell D531 (AMD proc). Windows 7 runs great, installed VitualPC and XP mode. All bios hardware virtualization settings are on. XP mode start preping the machince and about a percent or 2 into the setup the host reboots. No errors in the system logs... nothing, just a reboot.I've uninstalled, reinstalled several times with the same result.

Also copied a working VPC 2007 VM hard drive running XP and the same issue occurs. Gets to the XP logo with bar moving across the bottom, couple seconds, and boom a reboot of the host. After the initial reboot, another attempt either causes a reboot or freezes the entire host forcing a power down.Looking for help here... I wouldn't expect a RC to crash the host regardless.

Getting Host OS To See Driver Installed In XP Mode
If I have a piece of hardware that doesn't have and will never have Vista/Win7 compatible drivers, can I install it in the VM and have an application in the host use it?  Our company uses a fax driver that has no Vista or 64-bit support.

I can install it in XPMode and it works there, but an instance of Word opened from the host doesn't have that driver available to it.  Only an instance opened from within XPMode can use it.  Is there a tweak or settings change to have host applications use drivers that only exist in the virtual machine?

Access Host Drive From Command Prompt In Xp Mode
This might be a silly question, but I'm having a terrible time trying to access files on the host machine (Windows 7) through the command prompt within the Virtual Machine (XP). I can see the drives in Explorer (e.g. C on VAULT_CORE_I&) and I see sclientc in the prompt, but I have no idea how to access the drive from the prompt.

I'm trying to help out a colleague who runs an old FORTRAN compiler and does alot of his engineering calcs with it, and would not work in Windows 7 (but it is working in XP Mode). However, I'd like to keep the files on his Windows 7 machine and not contain them inside the virtual machine.

RTM + XP Mode - Network Connect On Host Causes Blue Screen
Ok this one is driving me mad and I'm at a loss to undersatnd what's going on, so any help would be apprechiated.Issue: XP Mode installed and working well on Windows 7 Pro installation (Dell E6500 Laptop)I have set the network settings in XP mode to my network adapter so that I can run IIS and connect to it from my host machine. All works fine.

I can browse the host machine from XP Mode and can ping the XP mode Virtual machine from the host... BUTAs soon as I open IE or a file window on the host and direct it to the XP Mode machine I get an instant blue screen with an IRQ message. Now here is where it gets really odd.  I have a VPN connection to my work network.

If i connect to VPN, therefore I now have two active network connections on the host PC the network connection to XP mode works fine (no blue screen).I'm guessing that the issue is caused when the same network connection is being used for Internet / local traffic and the XP mode machine at the same time...

some kind of loop back?Does anyone have any ideas? PLEASE!PS: if anyone is interested I have Server 2003 running as a Virtual machine using XP Mode, but this issue relates to both a std XP Mode install and a basterdised one for Server 2003..

Problems With Full Screen Mode - Host Taskbar Hides Guest Ta
I enjoy the new look of the full screen mode, where it looks very much like RDP.  I do have one issue with the new full screen mode - my host taskbar hides the guest taskbar, even when the guest is in full screen mode.  This makes it impossible for me to click on the guest taskbar unless I tell my host taskbar to auto-hide.

This is a very major usability problem.  I would expect that in full screen mode, it would take up the entire screen, including the space for my host taskbar - very much like RDP does.  Please consider changing this before you RTM.

Random Crashes, BSODs, Freezes
I think this all started after I did a RAM upgrade

It began with programs stopping (kernel32.dll, idon'tknowthenameanymore.dll)

But also games are just freezing after some time, mw2, ac, cod4. They all crash randomly.

Now sometimes the whole system freezes and I have to reset it.

Also, I get various BSOD's (ie IRQl not less or equal)

I think it has somethin to do with my memory,

I have 4 gb dual corsair 1066 kit combined with 2 gb Reaper 1066.

I am thinking of re-installing windows, because I didn't install it after the upgrade

Or do you guys think that the memory is corrupted?

Specs:

Win7 ultimate x64
MSI p45 Neo-3 FR
Core2Duo E8400
Ati HD4870

Random Win 7 X64 Crashes And Freezes
every time i try to install windows 7 on my new build, i do a clean install, however it spends about a second on the copying files part, then waits a few minutes before it starts expanding files. it hangs at 0% for a few more minutes then it will start accelerating. it will crash at random points while it is "expanding files".

the crashes vary, sometimes the display will explode and look lagged out then look like small tiles, the display sometimes turns red where shadows are as well, it also likes to just freeze. it frequently likes to freeze at 76 or 46%.

i had 7 installed one time when i kept my mouse moving constantly throughout the installation, but then the freezes would happen when i would boot into normal windows, but not safe mode.

Microsoft Word 2007 SP1 Crashes And Freezes On Saving And Closing
 I am running Windows 7 beta X64 build 7000 on my T61

Problem: after installing MS Office 2007 Standard, everything works fine. After installing the required security updates, SP1, and fixes, only Word 2007 crashes (not PP, Excel, or Outlook). The crash happens just about every time I save a doc or exit Word.

I had a problem with word crashing with XP, Vista, and Vista X64. The fix was simple; since I have an HP C6280 printer all I had to do was make sure it wasn't set as the default printer. (therefore it was an HP driver issue).

This time with Win 7 that is not the case. I have even tried uninstalling all of my HP drivers and products. The only solution which has worked for me is to disable all add-ons in Word. Has anyone else experienced this problem or know of a fix?

I suspect it has something to do with the XML add-on; or maybe one of the updates.

XP Mode Freezes
I have Windows 7 loaded on a newly built computer consisting of the following components:Gigabyte EX58-UD4P System BoardIntel i7-920 Processor12 Gb Corsair DDR3 RamnVidia GeForce 9800GT PCI-e Graphics CardAfter loading the 64 bit version of Windows 7 I loaded the 64 bit Virtual PC Beta and then the 64 bit XP Mode Beta.I am finding that the XP window freezes for approximately 30 seconds at random intervals ranging from 10 seconds to 3 1/2 minutes.

I checked the properties of My Computer in the XP window and found that the memory allocated to the XP virtual machine was only 256 MB. After some searching I found the settings and I increased the memory allocation to 1024 MB. That change did not help. As is the XP mode is unusable due to the freezing. I will update this post if I have anything further to contribute.

Freezes In Sleep Mode
Windows 7 is freezing in sleep mode now... I don't think it's my drivers or anything because 2 updates earlier it worked fine. I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is an RC problem, or if something is wrong with my computer. I hope not since this computer is only 2 week old... There is like nothing on it and everything downloaded has been from a disk so no viruses (well except kasperky anti-virus but I HOPE that would be clean lol).

Basically when I put it into sleep manually, I cannot get it out, and my power/reset buttons do not work, I actually need to turn off the electricity.

Oh, and it's not my screen considering I CAN turn my screen on but it goes right back into powersave mode (sleep mode). I DID force it out once, and it said no signal from the computer even though the computer is on. This leads me to believe it is the OS (or god forbid one of my parts).

I just realized something... I have on HD connected via sata cable, but I took the power away from it (I wanted to hear something). I mean is that the possible cause? I doubt it though since it's not registered as an HD due to having no power... And my sound card light is on, so I'm assuming that is still on when I put the computer in powersave mode... Maybe that's an issue?

Virtual XP Mode Freezes
I have Windows 7 RC 64-bit and Virtual Windows XP 64-bit. It boots up normally and works but after a while it freezes. It's frozen about 20 seconds and then you can work again. And then it goes on like that. Any clue of what the problem is?

Sleep Mode Freezes Computer
I was one of the lucky people who got an advance retail copy of Win 7 Ultimate. I've installed it on my HP Pavilion DV7 laptop and have discovered that both sleep mode and hibernate mode cause the computer to lock up completely requiring a forced power down. When entering sleep or hibernate mode the screen will shut off,

you'll see a few seconds of HD activity and then the computer completely locks up. The backlit multimedia keys above the keyboard remain lit (these normally turn off in sleep or hibernate mode) and all keys and buttons are unresponsive except the power button, which I can hold down for 5 seconds to force a power-off. The laptop shipped with Vista Home Premium, both sleep and hibernate modes worked perfectly with Vista.

I have updated the BIOS to the latest one which HP says is needed as it adds Win 7 support. I have read the other threads on the site talking about making changes to the various power settings, I have tried all of those suggestions and nothing seems to work. Unfortunately, the BIOS on this laptop does not have settings where I can edit the S1 and/or S3 modes but, again, sleep/hibernate worked perfectly under the previous OS. Has anyone seen something similar on another system and managed to fix it?

EXPLORER.EXE Crashes, MMC.EXE Crashes, Moviemaker.exe Error
I want to love Win7 so badly, but this is just crazy. I'm about to go back to good old XP, simply for the stability. I'm about fed up with Windows 7 after only using it for two weeks. Off of a brand new and formatted clean install, with only Norton NIS 2010, Itunes, Adobe Reader, and Firefox 3.5.7 installed, I get constant explorer.exe crashes.

Shortly followed by an mmc.exe crash, then it just gets caught up in a never-ending explorer.exe crash that only a reboot resolves, for a short time. All drivers are up to date, and all Win 7 updates have been applied.

I've even formatted and re-installed Win7 only to have explorer begin crashing a day later. This is all on a stock Dell Inspiron 545 quad core, 8GB RAM, etc. I'm very tech savvy and am about jump off of the Win 7 bandwagon. Maybe the Apple Mac commercials are correct, another fumbled attempt at a stable OS from Microsoft?

After extensive reading, it appears that many others are suffering through this ____ also. Some get it while attempting to right click any icon, some when launching apps, some, like me , for no apparent reason at all. I don't ever get the BSOD, but the computer is essentially non-functional due to explorer restarting all the time.

I've done a ton of reading and have tried sfc /scannow, which found no errors. I've tried shellexview, to no avail for the context handlers. I've uninstalled and re-installed all non-MS apps. I've tried everything that I've read, and it eventually starts crashing again. It is very random, and I can find no patterns that cause the explorer crashing.

It works for two days, then goes haywire. Sometimes it only works for an hour before the explorer crashes begin. And yes, this is a fully licensed and legal copy of Win 7 Pro that I purchased through CDW. A side note, this computer ran WIN XP perfectly. All hardware has been tested and is perfect. If anyone has found a fix for this issue, then please chime in! Below are the errors that populate the Event Viewer:

Activation context generation failed for "c:program files (x86)windows livephoto galleryMovieMaker.Exe".Error in manifest or policy file "c:program files (x86)windows livephoto galleryWLMFDS.DLL" on line 8. Installation On VirtualBox 2.1 - Ubuntu 8.10 Host
Win 7 works perfectly as a guest OS on VirtualBox 2.1 (Ubuntu 8.10 Host). Tested both with 512Mb and 1Gb memory allocated. When you install Guest Additions you must set compatibility to "Windows Vista" and run Guest Additions as Administrator (both done through right-clicking on the appropriate Guest Additions exe file.)

Networking, automatic resolution switching (full screen to windowed) and "free" mouse movement works as intended.

Prevent Standby Mode When Running XP Mode Programs
Normally my PC enters standby mode after some period of doing nothing. That's good.I also use the XP-Mode functionality for perfoming some tasks without polluting my Windows 7 installation. For example downloading files from newsservers.I am searching for a way to automatically prevent my computer entering the standby mode when I am running a program on a Virtual Machine using the integration mode.

In short: when I am running a Virtual Machine I do not want my PC to enter the standby mode. If I am not running any Virtual Machine it is ok to enter the standby mode after some period of inactivity.Of course I do not want to turn standby mode on or off manually everytime I start or stop a Virtual Machine. I want this being done automatically.

I know I could also run a program as Insomnia which is a really simple program that blocks the standby mode as long as it is running. But I don't want to use such program too. Is there any way to setup the standby mode in such way that it detects a running Virtual Machine and block the standby mode as long as it is running?Does somebody know a tip or trick to make this work?

Slow Access To Host Hard Drive
Has anybody experienced (and fixed) extremely slow access to the host hard drive, from within a VM run by Windows Virtual PC on Windows 7?

I used pretty much all of Microsoft's virtualization products before and their access to the host HD was almost seamless - Windows Virtual PC in Win7 is incredibly slow at that. Everything else runs fine: overall performance of the VM and its local processes, internet access through the host machine, etc.

Any thoughts?

Host Freezing Dell Inspiron 1721
I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 latptop that freezes up every time I boot up a virtual machine. I'm running the RTM version of win7, and the RC version of WVPC. The lockup happens almost instantly after the guest boots. If I downgrade my bios to the previous version, i get BSOD instead. The BSOD mentions that an interrupt on a processor wasn't received in the expected time frame.

I can provide a minidump file from the above BSOD if anyoneat MS would like to take a look at it. The laptop has a Turion TL-56 processor in it - which is capable of hardware based virtualization. Any suggestions on how I can get WVPC working on this machine?
