The other night I was putting something on my 8gb sandisk flash drive. My pc shut off randomly and I go to recopy the files onto my flash drive and the drive keeps saying the disk is write protected. I cant format the drive because it says the disk is write protected. I've tried going into regedit and making the write protect reg key. Didn't work. The flash drive does not have a little switch to make it protected.

A software company send me a program on a usb flash drive - Toshiba 16GB. I just received another one as they upgraded my program. I went to format the little toy and it tells me that it is WRITE PROTECTED.I tried to go in regedit to see if the value for write protect is set 0 or 1 - needs to be 0.I tried couple of freewares but failed.

I have been using a 4GB Toshiba USB flash drive on my computer & also on USB ports stereos. All of a sudden the drive has started appearing write protected and I cannot add or delete any files on the drive. This is very surprising as I havent found any answer as to how can I remove the write protect thing and use my drive normally. The other thing is that the drive has no write protection switch to control it.

Ive been googling this non stop and have found this seems to be a common error with USB drives. So far ive only been able to find fixes for windows XP by editing the reg, but that directory doesn't exist in windows 7.
Anyone know how i can fix the USB or force it to be formatted?

This isn't specifically Windows 7, but I hope I have more possibilities with Windows 7. My thumb drive, which I hate to have to throw away, has become write-protected. It's a 16 GB thumb drive, so nothing to toss easily. It has no physical switch on it. I read about all sorts of solutions, like low-level format or registry editing. Nothing works. I always come back to square one: Can't format because of write-protection. Registry doesn't do a thing. I also found out that there is a virus on it. Maybe it caused the problem. However, the virus program can't remove it, because of the write-protection or because it is a 'non-local disk'. Vicious circles...
