Win7 Uses 1gb RAM Idle

Nov 26, 2009

Two days ago it used only about 600 MB of Ram when idle.

Yesterday it suddenly started using 1 GB idle and it froze a few times.

Why the sudden change? Can you help me decrease the usage?

PS If it helps, the problem started after installing G Data AV (before I used Nod32) and now I installed nod again and the usage is still the same.

I enclosed a picture from Resource Monitor in the attachments.

Explorer.exe is using 70mb. Is that normal?

Win7 (32bit) To Win7 (64bit) Upgrade Install Error

Nov 8, 2009

I have purchased and downloaded both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows7 Professional (no CDs or media here only download version)

I sucessfully upgraded from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32

Then I upgraded my hard disk (140Gb 500GB) and RAM (3GB to to 4GB)

Now I would like to go from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit

When I try and run the Windows 7-P-retail-en-us.x64.exe file it upacks the box then stops with this error:"We are unable to create or save files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write flies and that that folder is not read only".

I am the System Admin and I have full rights, and have moved the exe and the setup box files to My Documentsand I have modified the directory properties/attributes but I still get the same error over and over.

I searched the posts and some people stated one needs a clean install others say you can upgrade from any version so I am trying the upgrade here especially since the upgrade from Vista 32 to Windows 7 32 was smooth and did require all the extra work of a reinstall.

Reinstall Win7 32bit To Win7 64bit

Oct 28, 2009

I purchased the Win 7 Pro Upgrade 32bit via digitalriver, but I've been doing some reseach and probably should have selected the 64bit version.

- Any ideas how I can get the 64bit version?

- For those who ordered the 32bit back-up disc kit for the extra $15 and have received it, does it come with both 32bit & 64bit?

- I've already installed and activated the 32bit version, but when I go to install the 64bit version, will I need to / is there a way to deactivate my initial 32bit install or will this not matter?

Creating Bootable USB For Win7 X64 Using Win7 X86

Sep 23, 2009

I'm currently running 32-bit Windows 7 (Professional, full version) on my laptop, and want to use this machine to create a bootable USB drive with 64-bit Windows 7 (also Professional, full version). I tried going through the steps that are available on various tutorials online, but I'm always tripped up while attempting to use bootsect to make the drive bootable; basically I get an error saying that I need to be using a 64-bit OS.

I don't have convenient access to a computer with 64-bit Windows Vista/7 (I work at an academic institution where all pubic computers have XP or Linux), so I'm wondering if there's any way to get around this and create a bootable USB for 64-bit Windows 7 via a 32-bit OS.

CPU Spiking When Idle?

Apr 17, 2011

It seems that when I leave my laptop alone to go into sleep mode, the CPU keeps spiking at rather random intervals. Sometimes it spikes to 30% on one core just for a second.I have it set to dim display at 5 minutes, turn monitor off at 15 minutes, and to sleep at 20 minutes. It seems that just before the screen turns off, at about 14 minutes the BFE service and svchost.exe (defragsvc) take up about 50% of my CPU!!I have also seen the ssdp discovery service running and taking up some CPU power aswell? So far I have run a full scan of Microsoft security essentials, Malwarebytes anti malware, and Spybot search and destroy, none have found anything at all. Before the reformat I haven't experienced anything like these spikes. I don't know if that's because I haven't been paying attention to it this much, or if something has infected me, or if something is wrong with my windows 7 installation...

BSOD Only When Idle

Mar 20, 2012

This has been with me for a long time (can't remember how long) must have been about 2 years now. Just decided to try to solve it. When I'm using the computer, everything is fine. My video card is pretty old. When playing some games, sometimes the game crashes (and I get a notification about how my graphics sucks), but no BSOD. I haven't really exhaustively tested, but I think I've used it for 10 hours straight without any problems. The problem comes when I leave it alone (10-30 minutes.. I haven't seen it alive beyond 30 minutes of idle), even if its downloading something or running an antivirus scan. I have been able to run a full scan at startup (before windows loads), which took about an hour, with no problems. I used windows update to install all the latest updates (from windows). I have hibernate disabled and no screensavers, no standby after x minutes/hours. I do sometimes put it to sleep from time to time and there are usually no problems.

BSOD Usually When Idle?

Apr 26, 2012

I have a Dell XPS with most stock hardware (added 1 HDD and removed 1 optical drive). I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with and i7 and 12gb of ram. The Windows install is not factory, but it is from a disc I got from dell when I called and complained long enough (and to several different people) that I did want all of the standard junk that is on the factory restore. Most nights my computer apparently BSODs while I am asleep and yesterday was the first time I saw it happen. I am unfamiliar with reading the crash reports after the fact, but I was able to see on the 1 BSOD I saw that it mentioned my ATI Radeon HD5800 graphics card (atisys___ or something of the sort). I then removed the ATI drivers and software complete with Driver Cleaner and reinstalled the newest version. I do no do and have not done overclocking.

Too Much RAM Being Used On Idle (Windows 7 Pro)?

Jan 15, 2013

Just recently I have started having the issue of too much RAM being used on both my desktop and laptop.I am by no means a novice when it comes to computers. The desktop is a custom build and the laptop is a $3600 workstation. Both systems have never given me this problem until I installed Microsoft Office 2013.I can data this problem as soon as I started using this version of office. However, new updates on Windows 7 cannot be ruled out as a possible issue so I am posting on the forums to see if anyone else is having similar issues.

Here are screenshots of task manager. As you can see, there is no program using more than 80MB of RAM. I cannot figure out what is occupying all the space. Could it be clipboard? This usually happens after I am done working on assignments (which require quite a bit of copying and pasting graphs in uncompressed TIFF format created in MATLAB).

Side note: After restarting my desktop, the system usually uses around 1.8GB RAM and laptop uses around the same. This issue is on both laptop and desktop.

Relevant desktop specs: Intel i7 2700k, OCed at 4.5GHz (liquid cooled), Intel 330 180GB SSD, Nvidia GTX570, Western Digital Black 1TB for storage, Corsair Vengeance 8GB RAM working at 1600 MHz.

Relevant laptop specs: Intel i7 920XM, Intel 330 180GB SSD, Nvidia Quadro 880M, Western Digital Black 320GB for storage, Corsair Vengeance 8GB RAM, working at 1333 MHz.

RAM Usage At 46% Idle

Oct 29, 2009

My Win 7 Acer RAM (3GB) is running at 46% idle? This seems to be alot?

Though it does not increase that much with windows open, even when I open WMP and play music it only goes up to 49-50%.

I use the gadget on screen and double check it with task manager, they are the same.

This is more than the previous Vista Basic machine, which I returned, it ran at 40%?

Is there a way to adjust or sort this?

Oh, this morning it went up 99% and I could not switch it off, I had to hold the button to switch off?

Svchost.exe PID / Process During Idle?

Jan 8, 2012

When I don't touch my computer for a while, I get CPU 100% (or CPU 50% on this dual core). As soon as I touch the mouse, in one second the culprit escapes. I know it's something under svchost.exe and I know I could see which svchost with Process Explorer or Svchost Viewer. But since the whole process disappears as soon as I touch mouse, it's pretty difficult to pinpoint. Svchost Viewer doesn't list all the processes in one screen, scrolling is needed. So it's basically always hidden and I can't scroll to it as that kills the process. How do I find out what exact process inside svchost.exe is eating my CPU during idle? My goal is to prevent the offending process altogether from starting.By the way, which settings of Windows Defender can cause this CPU 100% on idle problem, I didn't yet try shutting down all the settings there.

Windows 7 Lock-Up After Idle?

Jun 18, 2012

The issues come when I leave the PC overnight, idling, with the monitor physically turned off (I use the power button). When I come back in the morning and turn the monitor back on, there is a black screen and the PC won't wake.I have left the computer idling during the day for many hours with the monitor being in standby (PC turns it off, not me).Interestingly, when the PC "hangs" after the night I can still access stuff over the network, and play some videos on my TV which is DLNA-ed to it. Logs do not show any issues, in fact there is some logging going on all night meaning the PC isn't totally dead. However, I try plugging some USB devices in and out, but it doesn't make that USB recognition noise.

Things I have tried:

- playing around with power settings, ie. disabling USB turn-off, disabling ULPS on my vid card (ultra-low-power-savings mode), changing the screen turn-off times, turning sleep and hybernate/hybrid off

- note it is NOT a taskbar auto-hide issue. If you are having crashing problems after idling (still able to access PC for 10s of seconds before it freezes), be sure to check out information on the auto-hide of the taskbar

Other info:

- I run utorrent overnight As a test, I turned my monitor off (physically) during the day, and came back to a "hung" system. I think this may be the root of the issue but it's still driving me up a wall because it's such a weird problem. I have to keep trouble shooting the issue to be certain. Furthermore, my main concern, and the reason for writing this post, is that I want to make sure this is not some hardware issue that is later going to progressively get worse. To me it doesn't seem like a hardware thing, but maybe there are some experts out there who can shed some light.

Windows 7 Freezes When Idle?

May 8, 2011

hen the system is not heavily loaded it seems to freeze after 10 minutes to an hour, primarily observed with the Up Time clock in Task Manager stopping. Other symptoms include no response to keyboard or mouse clicks and having the cursor lock to a particular shape such as the window size adjustment shape. The only way I have found to get the system going again is to shutdown and reboot. Usually a hardware reset or forcing shutdown is required to get applications such as Task Manager to stop. When the system is heavily loaded i.e. running Prime95, these symptoms do not seem to occur.I have been unable to determine conclusively whether the problem is hardware or software. The system(s) are new with the following configuration[CODE]I have performed multiple clean installations of Windows 7 Pro from two different Microsoft DVDs (purchased from Newegg), used two different sets of hardware (including CPUs, memory, video cards, Power supplies, disks, etc.) changed from Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3 motherboards to GA-X58A-UD5 motherboards, run memory tests for ten hours or more, run in Safe mode, run with absolutely no additional software other that the virgin operating system. Tested multiple BIOS settings, including optimized defaults, with changes only to allow RAID disks.

BSOD After Reinstall On Idle?

Jan 30, 2012

I have HP G61 that was working fine until around Christmas. Then I got BSOD on wake-up after idle. I did start-up repair, it ran fine. I thought it was fixed. It worked all day. I shut it off and restarted it many times, closed it down for the day. The next morning, same story. It acts like it is going to come up, starts the swirl of colored dots, then BSOD. I did chkdsk/r, clean. I updated everything I could through Windows. I was running Norton, but now I don't have anything. I have to keep reinstalling it every time I do a clean reinstall. The last reinstall was on the 21st. It is running 64-bit Win 7, oem. I believe I have attached the requested reports, but I don't know how to read them!

LAN Connection Gets Disabled By Itself On Idle?

Feb 21, 2012

A few days ago I tried connecting a MBlaze modem to my laptop (Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit) to access internet. But it resulted in instant BSOD everytime. I deleted the modem software after that & didn't try to connect it again. But now, whenever I connect using my LAN broadband, connection works fine as long as I am continuously browsing something. But as soon as I stop browsing and it goes in idle mode in about 10-15 minutes, the connection gets disconnected and in the Broadcom Netlink Ethernet properties it shows "No drivers are available for this device". The only solution to this is a forced shutdown & restart, after which it works fine untill not idle. I am not able to download anything because of this. I tried many things like reinstalling the network adapter driver, unchecking the power management feature, resetting the connection, etc. but nothing is working.

Experiencing Various BSODs While Idle?

Mar 3, 2012

I have been experiencing various BSODs over the past month on my computer, which I only built this January. They mostly happen while my computer is idle, but occasionally they occur while I am doing general activities, like browsing folders or the Internet. Recently I've seen them while starting games (tonight it was GTA IV: Episodes from Liberty City), but most of the time I can play games for hours without experiencing BSODs.

[code]...

I have tried reinstalling my OS. I am not overclocking. I've run MemTest in overnight tests, first on one stick, then the other, than both sticks - no failures. I've tried to make sure all my drivers were up to date, and I've turned Driver Verifier on - had a few related BSODS but haven't been able to track down any conclusive info on what they indicate. I've also run FurMark to stress test my GPU, and that test passed. I have also downloaded Crystal Disk Info and HD Tune to test my SSHD and HD, and both look to be fine.I am not sure what else to do... I think it is either the SSHD or drivers, but I`m not sure how to further track that down.
