Win 7 - Support For Legacy Hardware

Buy new hardware is not an option.

ALL Windows OS prior to Vista contained support for Legacy hardware devices. The drivers for these devices would load just fine and run as designed. Then along comes Vista and no more support for Legacy hardware.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but Windows XP required less HD space than Windows 7, but XP offered more support for ALL hardware and drivers, while Windows 7 doesn’t allow any legacy support?

Now Windows 7 is touted as being the “End-All-Be-All of OS's. I smell Vista in a new package, with no support for legacy hardware.

Why is that? Does Microsoft really think that we should scrap the devices that we have and buy new hardware just because we need to in order to run an inferior OS? Linux doesn't seem to have an issue with legacy hardware in their newest releases, nor does Apple.

I will not throw away thousands of dollars of hardware just because Microsoft will not support it. My Dell GX270 test platform worked just fine with Windows XP Pro. The hardware did it's job very well.

Sorry Microsoft, I am not going to replace all of our systems just because you are too lazy to allow support for legacy hardware. I guess that I am stuck with XP Pro until Microsoft stops supporting it, or comes up with a real live working OS. If I must, I will transition all of the systems to Linux and Microsoft can die a slow painful death.

Gee, you would have thought that Microsoft may have learned a lesson with the Vista failure. I guess that the developers at Microsoft have forgotten that WE, the consumer put them where they are at today. Continuation of FAILING to support WE, the consumer will only lead you to continued failure in the marketplace.

Support For Parallel (legacy) SCSI In Win 7
I have been running 68 Pin SCSI for quite a long time, and I have a SUBSTANTIAL amount of drive and controllers across my network.  I am looking to move towards Windows 7 64 bit, however so far I cannot get the install for windows 7 to detect 19160/29160 or 2 different revisions of 3200S Raid controllers.  They are not acknowledged during installation, nor are they detected when installed into a existing windows 7 system.  The card is detected as unknown I/O controller and will not load drivers.

Is there any way to force drivers into Windows 7, or, are there supported Windows 7 SCSI controllers (both standard AND Raid, raid being the priority).  Are there plans to impliment this in the future if it is not currently available.

Win7 With Legacy Hardware
I noticed that I'm able to run Windows 7 in a Mini-ITX build with an Intel Atom CPU and 2GB of RAM and embedded graphics.  I'm wondering if I'll be able to run Windows 7 in an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 3800+ 2.00 GHz with 3GB of RAM on an Asus A8S-X motherboard and an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card.

I tried Vista Home Premium (prior to service pack 1) in this rig and couldn't get it to work.  It froze consistently.  Has anyone ran Windows 7 on a similar system, or is there a compatibility testing site for Windows 7?

Should I Delete Legacy Recovery Drive ?
I am planning to perform a clean install of Windows 7 on my Dell Vista PC (as I understand this is better in the long term than an upgrade).

My PC has a 10GB D: drive, which it came installed with, 'Recovery'. Is this something I should delete/format as part of the Windows 7 upgrade process (and will I get invited to create anew one?), or I should I just leave it be? Apologies if this is a simple question/answer, but I'm a bit snowed under with children today and I don't have time for Google and 'due diligence'!

Testing Legacy Apps For Compatibility
Having spent a while checking which of my existing applications will run under Windows 7 I have now learned enough to realise that my conclusions may have been affected by XP Mode which I believe exists only in Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate.

My current copy of Windows 7 is the Windows 7 Release Candidate which I believe is Windows 7 Ultimate, but the PC I hope to buy after Christmas will most likely be Windows 7 Home Premium.

Can anyone advise how I inhibit XP mode so I can test compatibility with Home Premium and/or how I can tell whether a legacy applications is running in Windows 7 Ultimate courtesy of XP mode, and therefore may not run under Windows 7 Home Premium?

PC Locked Up And Rebooted With Legacy Dos Screen Again
This time the message was DES has been disabled. Enable it or some such nonsense. I have no clue what it means. Luckily I had a PS/2 keyboard to use to hit the ENTER key or my PC would have been disabled again.

When I got back online, every website that uses PWs had to be logged back into. Sites that I never have to log into once I've done it once.

What is this DES and is it related to cookies?

ATI X1650 Legacy Driver Issue
I'll start with when I installed Windows XP. My ATI X1650 worked fine when I downloaded the latest drivers from the ATI website. (at the time it was 8.11) Well, other then openGL. DirectX 9 worked fine on it but openGL had issues. I ended up installing the drivers on that came with it and everything was happy.

So, now on to Windows 7. I installed Windows 7 painlessly and everything was working fine. (It even recognized my card and dual monitors without a problem.) And then when I tried an openGL game openGL wouldn't work. So, I found my drivers from forever ago (8.11 which didn't work the first time...) and installed those. Poof, openGL worked. And then I hit my other problem. Aero didn't work now.

So I went online to try and find a new driver and found that ATI had put my card on legacy support. (Basically Windows would ship with all the drivers my card would need. And it did, other than openGL.) So, I went to Device manager and had it check for an updated driver. And guess what, it wouldn't install the original Microsoft driver over my old one. (which I installed to get openGL working)

So basically I need to find some way to get the original Microsoft Windows 7 display driver to install over my old driver without uninstalling my old driver. (I've tried installing the newest ATI drivers (9.2) with support for my card and that didn't work.)

Legacy Networking - Simple File Sharing
I have 2 Windows 7 machines connected to a network with several other devices all of which I can see in Windows Explorer - Networking. I've set up shares on each of the Windows 7 machines and turned off Password protected sharing in Advanced sharing settings. The first time I try to access shares on either of the Windows 7 machines from the other machine it asks for a username and password before I can access the shares.

Once the credentials have been accepted the shares continue until the machine is rebooted. Setting the 'Remember credentials' box on the login page doesn't help. Other shared resources (XP desktop, NAS, Media player) on the network all work fine from either of the Win 7 machines. What I am looking for is the equivalent of the old "Simple file sharing" from XP, can anyone tell me how to set this in Windows 7 (Ultimate & Professional)?

Firewire Problem: Legacy Driver And Daisy Chain
Cannot get "last" hard drive in firewire daisy chain to work when using legacy drivers.

Original problem:  dual opteron with Windows 7 Pro 64 locks up when moving large files to 1394a (tyan mombo builtin) or 1394b (addin card TI chipset)  This combination worked fine in Vista64 and on an early RC win7 but failed when I upgraded to win 7 pro yesterday.

and  I tried the TI driver on the addin card as it had a TI TSB81BA3 chipset but the TI OHCI driver still failed. I then set both devices to the legacy driver. That seemed to work OK until I connected a 2nd device and observed that the last hard drive device does not work.

Peripherals:  Venus 2x1GB (dual drive) firewire 400 oxford chipset
Rosewell  2TB (single drive) firewire 800+400
no-name oxford chipset firewire 400 dvd burner

If I put the Venus on either the mombo or the addin firewire 400 then the 2nd drive of the Venus is not recognized.

If I put the Rosewell on 800 (or 400) and daisy chain the Venus (400) to it, I see only the 2TB Rosewell drive

If I chain a 3rd drive (the dvd burner) onto the Venus 400 then the first drive of the Venus shows up in addition to the dvd burner and the original Rosewell 2TB.

Again, all this worked fine on vista 64 and (I am almost certain) on a RC 7 that I had before I put in Window 7 pro on this Tyan 2985.

I recall something very similar when windows xp came out and a hotfix was used.  I think the problem had something to do with either too many or not enough resets being sent to various devices on the bus causing the last device not to be recognized.

Want to mention that when using the new Windows 7 firewire drivers that all the drives show up unlike the legacy drivers.  Unfortunately, the system quickly locked up when transfering large files (iso images) to the Venus or the Rosewill

The dvd burner did work correctly with the new windows 7 drivers but I used it to rip images.  It was only when I attempted to copy the images back out to the firewire drives that I noticed the system hung.  Pulling the firewire cable released the hang.  It was at that point I googled firewire problem and tried the legacy drivers.

Edit - I just tried putting the Rosewell at the end of the daisy chain.  It worked.  The problem seems to be when two drives are in a case (my Venus case).  The 2nd drive of the venus is not recognized.  Since this is hot swappable, I pulled out the first drive and the 2nd one immediately came online.

When I pushed the first drive back in, the 2nd drive went off line and the first drive came back online.  The rosewell 2tb stayed on all the time even though it was the last on the chain.  I pulled the venus and put it on an intel quad running vista 64 home premium and also on a dual opteron running vista 64 ultimate and both drives in the venus were recognized immediately.  It just does not work in windows 7.

Qn About Legacy NForce2 - SATA Drivers For NF7-S Mobo
I have an Abit NF7-S mobo (5+ yrs old) that has an nForce2 Ultra 400 + MCP-T chipset. The nvidia site has classified this as legacy, and only has the download for Vista.

Well I usually prefer to install the 'official' drivers, as MS ones seem to be at times problematic from experience. However I went along with installing the ones provided my microsoft update. All components in Device Manager seem to have been installed, and the OS is working without a problem.

But the voice within me still prefers the 'official' vendor software. Would the vista one provided by nvidia work on Windows 7. I use to get a nice small app to control audio in the official release, which I am obviously not getting in the MS trimmed version.

I also have a SATA 150 RAID (Silicon Image Sil 3112A SATA PCI Controller) on the NF7-S which has the same issue as above. All working.. but for that voice.

Legacy Printer Drivers HP Deskjet 600 And 990c
Are windows going to include legacy printer drivers? In particular, there are no drivers for the HP Deskjet 600 and 990c. These are the only drivers that allow me to use my printer with some applications. If this will not be included in Windows 7, can you ask HP to include drivers on their website? Right now, the 600 only has Win 98 drivers on HPs site, and the 990 only has XP drivers, which are not functional in Windows 7. So currently SOL.

OHCI Legacy Driver, Error 51, And Texas Instruments Chipset
I have a firewire card (PCIe) with a texas Instruments chipset because TI chipset is what is recommended for FW audio interfaces. However, when I write to or read from a HDD connected by FW, I get thousands of " events ID51

"An error was detected on device %1 during a paging operation". Also I think transfer spped is lower than it ought to be.

I did try the legacy driver briefly and the error 51s went away, however I was concerned about the effect on my firewire audio of not using the TI driver. However, I have since read that many device manufacturers recommend making this change and that it has solved some people's BSOD's (with FW audio drivers) so I guess I will try it.

I would like to know, however, if anyone here has definitive knowledge of how using the non-TI driver would affect what makes the TI chipset good for audio...

Win 7 Does Not Support New PC Games
Question about PC games. Shall Windows 7 support also PC games that have meant to work with Windows XP and Vista?

There is obviously support for the games.

Or is it only that Windows doesn't support yet fully 64 bit platforms?

For example HP Pavillion dv6000 with AMD 64 AthlonX2 doesn't work with Games that have been made for Windows Vista.

Why Does Win 7 Not Support 1900x1200 On Laptops ?
I am trying to figure out why Vista and Win7 do not support 1900x1200 on any of my laptops. I am currently testing on 2 HP systems that are capable of 1900x1200 screens. When I had XP Pro installed I was able to enjoy 1900x1200.

When I moved to Vista and Win7 the best resolution I am able to achieve is 1680x1050 on system 1 and 1024x768 on system 2.

Seems a bit odd that both Vista and Win7 can not support the resolution on either system yet XP can.

Multi Language Support In Win 7
I'm planning to buy a new PC with Windows 7 (English) and not sure what version I should buy. I need to be able to switch into Japanese language mode for writing Word documents and composing/reading email sometimes. I do not need the desktop, menus etc. to be displayed in Japanese, however. I've found some info on the Internet and MS web site but still confused:

1) I have read that LIPs can be installed on any version of Win 7 but looks like Japanese must be installed as a full install (no parent language). If this is the case, can I setup 2 user accounts and configure one for English and the other for Japanese?

2) Do I need to have Win 7 Ultimate or Enterprise edition to do what I want to do?

Does Win 7 Ultimate Edition Support Both 32 And 64 ?
I would like to ask this straightforward question: does Windows 7 Ultimate Edition support both 32 and 64 bits? I have a legal copy of it and installed it on my Vista Business PC, but it seems to be running at 32 bits only. Is it because of this Vista only supporting 32 bits? How do you tell the bits your OS is running at?

Does Win 7 Support Symbolic Links ?
I'm researching an issue in which Windows 7, Vista, and Windows 2008 Server cannot delete user profiles host on an EMC SAN (The error says that I require permission from the user, even if I AM the user).  XP and 2003 Server do not have this issue and can delete the same files without any problems.

During my research I've been looking into some of the new features introduced in Vista and up that may be responsible for this issue.  I'm away of UAC and have tried all settings related to that without success.  I also see that support for Windows Symbolic Links was introduced with Vista (see link) however I can't find out if Windows 7 also supports it.  Does anyone know?

Win 7 Support Of Dynamic Disks

The public betas are only Ultimate, so it's dificlut to determine what functionality is lost on other versions.  I haven't found a detailed feature list that indicates which versions will support Dynamic disks (Supersite for Windows, searching Microsoft forums).

Win 7 Support For Seagate Disk

After installation, the Seagate shows in the Disk Management as 300 GB, but if look at contents with Explorer, it has only 125 GB capacity. Can this be a Seagate firmware problem? (Windows 7 RC earlier had no problems with this drive when the system had Win7RC + Vista + XP.)
