Use VISTA Windows Mail In Win7
a little tip here as I HATE webmail based type of email clients. I was quite happy with Outlook express and Windows mail.

This tip works on both X-86 and x-64 versions.

1) Take ownership of the windows mail folder (it's in program files or program files (x86) depending which version of W7 you are running.

2) delete contents of the folder.

3) copy your old VISTA windows mail folder to the windows mail folder on W7

4) make a shortcut link to winmail.exe

5) set up your accounts like on Vista / Outlook express in XP

6) enjoy.

Dell Windows Vista OEM To Win7 Upgrade
I recently bought a DELL STUDIO 1555 on June 12.

Since Free windows upgrade is for the systems purchased after June 26 i am not getting a upgrade.

I am from INDIA. I contacted Dell Customer Service here. They said i cannot purchase it from them also. Actually they had very less information about Windows 7. All they just said is that since my system is bought before June 26 i am not eligible. They had no further information about it.

I have Two Questions

Q1. Why Can't i purchase OEM version of windows 7 from DELL?

Q2.Since my laptop is shipped with OEM version of WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM 32 BIT SP1, if i purchase a WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM UPGRADE PACK from Microsoft / Amazon etc,.

Can i install it on my machine ??

Can i install WINDOWS 7 by formatting C Drive or should it be installed over Vista ??

Vista Windows Mail On Win 7
I used what I did read here to tranfer my vista windows mail on Windows 7 and it works great.

I just have one problem; when i move a mail to one of my folders (from inbox to something else) all the content seems to be missing and I get this error

Message cannot be found

The contents of this message cannot be found.

Did I forget something when moving my files? I didn't take ownership of nothing since it wasn't mentioned on the post i did read (just renamed old dir and moved all allong)

I also seem to get empty message without subject, sender or message body ... simply fully blank.

Any ideas (did get any of those on my vista for over a year)

Upgrade Path Problem - Win 7 RC To Vista To Win7 Upgrade
I installed Win 7 RC on a new build and purchased Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM with upgrade to Win 7 Home premium. The Win 7 upgrade disc has arrived. I understand that Vista must be installed and activated for the upgrade to work. Attempts to install Vista with Win 7 RC running or booting from the Vista disc lead to error code 0x80070103, insufficient free space. My HDD has > 450 Gb free space in 2 partitions. Do I need to reformat the HDD in order to install Vista over Win 7?

Will I Be Able To Upgrade To Win7 From Vista ?
I am ready to buy a new dell computer which ships with Vista SP1 64 bit premium.  I have heard great things about Windows 7 and want that operating system.  If I buy my system today, will I be able to upgrade to Windows 7 for free when it starts shipping from Dell, or should I just wait to purchase?

Cannot Upgrade From Vista To Win7
I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 Service Pack 1.  I downloaded the ISO of Windows 7 RC 1 and used Nero 9 to burn a DVD.  Using both the DVD to perform and upgrade and copying the contents of the DVD to a separate hard drive and performing an upgrade from there, I get the following error:"Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation.

Error code: 0x8000FFFF" I'm pretty sure both the DVD and the hard drive sources are clean and free of physical errors Any thoughts?

Vista Upgrade Before Windows 7
I have Vista upgrade (that I would upgrade my Windows XP Media to) but have chosen to stay w/XP.  Would it make sense to upgrade to Vista so that I did not have to do a "clean install"......but just a regular upgrade?

Removing Vista From Dual Boot - Vista On C: And Win7 On D:
I installed Windows7 as a dual boot on a Vista computer. Windows7 is the default operating system because it is listed first in the boot menu & launches automatically after 30 seconds. I realized that everything in Windows 7 is installing under D:etc. When I remove Vista & revert to one larger partition what will happen to all the installed programs that have a path to D:?

Won't the one drive become C:|? When installing Windows 7, I deliberately created a partition at the front of the drive & moved Vista to the 2nd partition assuming that whichever OS I booted into, it would use C: as the letter for their individual partition.

Vista To Win7 Upgrade Just Keeps Rebooting Over And Over
My upgrade from 32 bit Vista Home Premium to 32 bit Windows 7 Home Premium seemed to go ok. All five steps were completed but when Windows attempts to boot a message along the bottom of the new Windows screen says the installation was not successful, the previous version of Windows will be restored and not to restart the computer during this time.

However Vista never gets restored and the Starting Windows screen appears again and goes through the same cycle. So I don't know now if I have any operating system. Windows 7 won't boot and there is no sign that Windows Vista has been restored. It seems obvious that I should power down the computer but I'm not sure I'd be able to boot up again.

Upgrade From Winxp To Win7 Via Vista
I do NOT want to reinstall all of my applications (and possibly cannot) after switching to Windows 7!  This could take days.  I am currently running Windows XP.  It appears that Windows 7 will not install over Windows XP and keep everything running.  It is possible to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista and keep all of your applications intact.

Win 7 documentation implies that it is possible to upgrade from Vista to Win 7 and not lose your applications. Is the easy way to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 to first go from XP to Vista and then Vista to Win 7?

How To Remove Vista After Upgrade To Win7 ?
I finally upgraded computer from Vista to Windows 7. MAJOR IMPROVEMENT. However I still have Vista on computer, as when I reboot it gives me the option to run Windows 7 or Vista. I have Windows 7 Ultimate and I no longer need to use Windows Vista of course. And if I am correct it is taking up memory on CPU. Drive C has 24.3 GB available of 62.4GB. And Drive D has 322MB available of 9.99GB.

So I would like to clear more space by removing Vista. Can someone please explain in detail, step by step how to properly remove Windows Vista from computer. I have only found articles how to remove Vista to go back to XP. I hope I do not have to reinstall Windows 7 all over again!

Upgrade Win7 From Vista (both 64 Bit)
I think I may have jumped the gun buying the Win7 Upgrade during the half off sale a few months ago. I'm running Vista64 on a XPS laptop and just received the Win7 Upgrade product today. Now I read that no upgrade in place exists for 64bit os's. Right?

If I'm wrong there, then no need to answer the rest. If that is true, can I dual boot Vista/Win7? A book I bought on Win7 shows a way to use the upgrade product to do a complete clean install, so I could do the dual boot.

If I am forced to use dual boot, will I need to reinstall all apps or can I use one of the migration tools to give Win7 access to the all the apps I already have installed? If I'm forced to reinstall all apps, how will apps like Office treat this install? In other words, would it consider itself as two installs? (1 vista, 1 Win7) If instead a complete clean install is required, again, does anyone know how Office would treat the reinstall?

No Internet With Upgrade Of Vista To Win7
I have a MSI K8N Neo2 mobo with a  nvidia nForce 3 Ultra chipset which functioned perfectly from the get-go with a clean install of Vista Ultimate. I didn't have to jump through hops to find drivers since everything was included on the disk.

When I do an upgrade to Windows 7, I can't connect to the internet through the onboard ethernet. I thought I read somewhere that the Vista drivers should work with Windows 7.

Does anyone have internet  access using the K8N mobo, or a similar mobo?

XP To Win7 - Upgrade To Vista 1st ?
I have an unused Vista upgrade that came with my purchase of a Dell XPS laptop running XP MCE 2005. Rather than having to backup files and then reinstall apps for a clean install of 7, would it make sense to run the Vista upgrade, deal with the Vista driver issues then, and be able to do an upgrade to 7?

Vista To Win7 Upgrade Promotion
I recently bought a Windows Vista laptop with 4GB of ram which was covered by the free upgrade to windows 7 promotion. I have sent off for and received the Windows 7 media. After this I learnt the difference between 32 and 64 bit operating systems and discovered I have a new laptop which can't use all the RAM it was sold with. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor shows the laptop only able to use 3.1GB of the installed RAM!

Who should I contact to get a 64 bit version of Windows 7 so that my laptop can use all of its installed RAM? There is no mention of receiving the 32 bit version of Windows on Amazon where I purchased the laptop.

Alternatively can I use the product key I have received with the 32 bit media for a custom install with borrowed/"purchased and then returned" windows 7 64 bit media on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5536G)? Is there any legal technical or moral reason not to do this? I have checked the Laptop with the windows 7 upgrade advisor and it says my laptop meets all the technical specifications.

As a final resort I would return it as not suitable for purpose as it has been sold with an operating system which can't use all the installed RAM. I expected a laptop to be sold in a state so that it can use all installed RAM. Are there any other options open to me short of returning the laptop as I am not willing to pay for a second licence to use windows 7 – especially as all information I have found published by Microsoft states that both versions 32 bit and 62 bit would be supplied.

Vista To Win7 Upgrade 32 And 64 Bit
I have both Vista Ultimate 32 and 64 bit with Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade coming after release.  Is it allowed to install the Vista 32 bit in one machine and the Vista 64bit in another machine and then upgrade each?  These were gotten when purchasing my system hardware for a new build.

Just want if it is legal to use both copies or if I can only use one of the version even though both keys are different?  Or if the keys are someway connected.

FREE Upgrade To Windows 7 From Vista
I just received my "Free" upgrade Windows 7.  I don't know what I did wrong, but everything on my hard drive is GONE. I've lost my internet connection, word, excel, mail, pictures, itunes, etc.   Does anyone have any suggestions? How can I go back to Vista or restore to yesterday? When I looked at the restoring point, because it's looking like I "Formatted" the hard drive, it isn't showing a restore point.

Upgrade Performance Windows 7 Vs Vista
Windows 7 vs. Vista - Upgrade Performance

The latest Windows 7 client has its precursor beat in terms of upgrade speed

Windows 7 is âoutrunningâ Windows Vista in more ways than one. Microsoft has labored to ensure that the latest Windows client outpaces its precursor in a variety of scenarios, from startup time, to common usage tasks, and to shutdown, to name just a few. Another aspect in which Windows 7 has Vista beat is upgrade performance. According to Chris Hernandez, from the Windows Deployment team, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 to Windows 7 upgrades are at least 5% faster than Vista SP1 to Vista SP1 upgrades.

In fact, when it set out to do the operating system upgrade measuring contest, Microsoft was looking for at least a 5% threshold for upgrade scenarios involving Vista SP1 to Windows 7 was in comparison to jumps from Vista SP1 to Vista SP1. The Redmond-based company explained that the Windows Upgrade team monitored the Windows 7 upgrade performance during the development process, and that it compared it against its Vista baseline.

âThe reason we choose to use a Vista SP1 -> Vista SP1 upgrade instead of Windows XP -> Vista as our baseline was for the following: Windows XP is a vastly different operating system compared to Vista and an upgrade from Windows XP -> Vista would not be a good comparison with Vista -> Windows 7. Windows XP did not support 64-bit upgrades and we wanted to track 64-bit upgrade performance as well as 32-bit upgrades for Windows 7. Vista SP1 -> Vista SP1 is a valid upgrade path that ********s all upgrade code (this upgrade is commonly used by Product Support Services for a repair scenario),â Hernandez explained.

Now, 5% doesnât make a huge performance gap between the two operating systems. Still, users have to keep in mind that Microsoft used the Vista SP1 baseline comparison, and while I have heard countless complaints about Vista RTM, the barrage of criticism subsided with the advent of Service Pack 1, indicating a far superior user experience.

At the same time, the vast majority of end users donât actually perform benchmarks, or monitor performance metrics. For them increased performance in every aspect of the operating system, including upgrade scenarios, is a matter of perception. In this regard, 5% is more than enough to deliver a palpable impression of boosted upgrade performance for Windows 7 in comparison to Vista.

âThe upgrade performance tests used the metric of total upgrade time to gauge how Windows 7 upgrade performed against Vista upgrade. The tests were designed to measure total upgrade time simulating different user profiles (with different data set sizes, number of programs installed and settings) against different hardware profiles,â Hernandez added.
