Why No Built-in RAW Image Support ?

There is a RAW image viewer power toy available for XP which doesn't seem to work with 7. It would be nice to not even have to go through the trouble of installing the power toys and just have them built right in to the OS. Another useful one that comes to mind is the Image Resizer.  I think one of my biggest gripes with all versions of Windows is having to go and install applications that are used for common computing tasks such as viewing / editing images.

Built-in Support For Bluray Playback / Burning
Confirmed by Mr. Sinofsky himself, there will be no native BluRay support in Windows 7. However, BluRay Drive makers and OEMs will be able to extend Windows Media Center to support playback. What will be supported in Windows 7 though, is the burning of BRD discs.

Here’s the email that was forwarded to me from our loyal reader Theodore. I did make a WHOIS check to make sure that it was Sinofsky himself. Location was indeed from: United States Redmond Microsoft Corp.

Drive Shows RAW Filesystem
I had two 500G drives in raid-0. I then took apart the raid, formatted the two drives, installed into the machine on a DIFFERENT sata controller, everything works well. I use it a few days. Then I just boot the machine once more and, can't see my 500g drives AT ALL. They have simply vanished.

I check the disk management WHAT? it shows ONE 1t drive there, RAW filesystem. I shutdown and take out one drive, reboot and STILL it shows just one terabyte drive there. One, two drives, any SATA port, it always shows as one terabyte drive.

I rip both drives out, put in USB case and stick in my laptop, shows as one 500g drive, RAW filesystem, nothing on disk. Very nice. Incredible.

So now I've destroyed the partitions, formatted the drives...put them in the Windows 7 machine...and now I just wait how long will it take for win 7 to decide they are actually a single terabyte drive again.

And no, my sata controller (intel on Asus P5Q) is not set to raid mode either. If I have to reinstall Windows 7 for the third time to get it to work without amazing trickery.

Raw Drive Access Need For Virtualbox
hopefully this is the right forum for this question. Using virtual box for a VM on a laptop that dual boots into Linux or window 7.  What I want to do is share my home partition between the Linux VM when running windows 7 and native Linux.  In order to do so, I need access to the raw partition from Windows 7.  When I follow the instructions in the virtual box manual,

I got the following result: C:Usersesj>"c:Program FilesSunxVM VirtualBoxVBoxManage.exe" internalcommands listpartitions -rawdisk .PhysicalDrive0 VirtualBox Command Line Management Interface Version 3.0.2 (C) 2005-2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc.

All rights reserved. Error opening the raw disk: VERR_ACCESS_DENIED any ideas on how I can access the raw disk for use by the virtual machine?

NTFS Disk Reported As RAW
I am running Win 7 RC. I have non system/boot disk formatted as NTFS that is always CHKDSKed at boot and completes with no errors (and is reported to be NTFS). If I boot into XP or Ubuntu the drive works fine. Disk Management in Win 7 always reports the drive as being RAW. Any idea on how to get Win 7 to recognize the drive as NTFS short of re-formatting?

Unable To Format A RAW External Drive
So I have a 1TB external drive connected to my computer via eSATA and recently it got changed to a RAW file system some how. I'm not very concerned about recovering the data on the drive as it was mostly replaceable media and such but for some reason I am completely unable to reformat the drive. I'm running windows 7 64-bit.

I tried using using disk management with no luck, it just told me that it could not format the drive (I tried both a quick format and a regular one).

I then tried formatting it by booting with the windows 7 disc and trying that utility and it told me "Failed to format the selected partition. [error 0x80070057]."

I've tried acronis disk director but it always gets stuck when it is analyzing the partition. I also tried making a boot disk with that program and got the same problem.

I also tried just using the normal usb cable and plugging it in via that, I tried this with the steps listed above with the same results.

I can't seem to format this drive, does anyone know why?

WAIK: Error When Selecting Image In System Image Manager
I'm using the RC of the Windows Automated Installation Toolkit for Windows 7.I'm following the instructions to build an answer file for an unattended installtion. These are the instructions:
On your technician computer, insert the Windows 7 product DVD.

Navigate to the Sources directory on your DVD-ROM drive and copy the Install.wim file from the Windows product DVD to a location on the computer.

To open Windows SIM, click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Windows AIK, and then click Windows System Image Manager.

On the Windows SIM File menu, click Select Windows Image.

In the Select a Windows Image dialog box, navigate to the location where you saved Install.wim in Step 1, and then click Open. You will be prompted to select an image. Choose the Windows image that you want to install, and then click OK.You will be prompted to create a catalog file. Click Yes to generate the file.

When I do this, WSIM starts to process the image. The status label reads "Mounting image" and then later "Serializing" and then "Unmounting image".After that it stops with an error:windows SIM was unable to generate a catalogDetails:

Data Drive Converted To A RAW Format Drive
Have i7 with Hardisks.

Disk 1 has Windows 7 installed successfully. The other 3 disks are data disks.

2 of the 3 data disks are fine but 1 has somehow messed up.

The problem is the data disk which is/was 200gb seems to have converted itself to a RAW disk in data manager and in the desktop array it says corrupt needs formatting.

I have done nothing that I am aware of except prior to activating W7 I backed up to another spare disk, external...only thing that has changed.

Rebooted the machine, recovered the backup W7 installation and activated but none of this seemed to or should have affected the disk that is now RAW data in computer disk management.

The other point is the drive is showing as 94gb RAW data. I have activated it in in computer management with the hope of activating allow access to the data, but I have not formatted it.

Can anyone help please as I need to get the data back?
Can anyone help explain why the drive formerly NTFS has mysteriously converted to RAW format?
Anyone had any experience or ideas what needs ot be done and to avoid this in the future.

I was hoping there may be a way to restore the partition table as very little has changed on the drive.

HP PAVILION Built-in Webcam
Who knows how many people complained for following issue BUILT-IN WEBCAM WON'T WORK UNDER WINDOWS 7RC!

All right, I have the same problem, but I just could't find similar thread on any forum.

So, I installed win7 RC over win 7 beta (clean install not an update).

Everything went smoothly, drivers all found and instaled, device manager showing no yellow exclamation triangles.

Every bit of hardware is in place, everything works perfectly according to system diagnostic.

BUT, webcam shows no picture. Driver is properly installed and has no collisions with other system resources.

Interesting thing was, that camera was working excellent under win 7 beta. I don't know what has changed in win 7RC, but camera just won't start.

If anyone has any solution or similar issue, please don't hesitate to post a reply.

Oh yeah, my configuration:

HP PAVILION dv 6670el Entertainment PC
intel core2duo 2.0 GHz
2GB RAM
160GB HDD
NVIDIA 8400gs video card

HP built-in webcam (at least that's what system information says) 1.3Mpix

Built-in H 264 Codec Glitches
I am having troubles with the Win7 built-in H264 codec. It seems to be buggy and produces some blocky artifacts in a few of my videos (I am trying to play a MP4 container with H264/AAC).

This shouldn't be too much of a problem since 3rd party codecs do render the video just fine. But...

I can use these 3rd party codecs in other DirectShow players, but WMP always seems to fall back to the built-in codec, whatever I try!

What can MS do to fix this situation? I don't really care whether the built-in codec gets fixed, or WMP loads 3rd party plug-in, but as it currently stands, I can't watch my video in WMP.

Win 7 Built In Backup System
Question about Windows 7 Ultimate's built in backup system.

If I create a full system backup of my "C" drive, then do a restore, will it just install the "C" drive partition only, or will it overwrite the entire HD, thus wipping the rest of the partitions? Not looking to have the other partitions wiped!

I did some looking around, but that question/issue doesn't seem to be addressed.

MSi GT735 Built In Webcam Not Working
The webcam manufacturer is listed as Chicony ,(Sonix260)

It appears in the Device Stage as "CNF7231", and in the properties window has the following device id string: USBVID_04F2&PID_B073&REV_1208&MI_00

I have tried the driver that is auto-installed by the OS, the drivers available from MSi's website, the drivers for other models in the same series (laptops with the same chassis and same webcam installed).  I've tied using installers and manual installs.  Tried in both compatibility mode and running as administrator, and all combinations with and without these. I tried all the drivers on sonix website and i've tried drivers from MS driver database.

I've installed a play-tool called Crazy Talk Cam Suite - which reports that there is no camera found?  but there is a camera, it is at least present, and drivers are loaded, and report that they are working.  Microsoft LiveCam also doesn't work.  Skype shows a black screen, though it finds the camera.

The camera has a small yellow LED which illuminates when the camera is in use... this never goes on.  I have verified that the camera is still working in Linux, so there appears to be no fault with the hardware.

I notice that MANY other users are reporting that their webcams are not working - especially internal ones.  Is this a problem with Win7 or the drivers?

No Built-in Driver: Marvell Yukon NIC
From my understanding the Marvell Yukon NIC is quite popular on several motherboard manufacturers, including Asus. I have an Asus P5B-Deluxe and was shocked to see after loading W7 I had no network connection. Thankfully I had a laptop which was working, so I could download the Marvell driver.

Given that NICs are vitally important, I hope MS can include Marvell drivers in the RC and RTM releases.

I'm using this driver:

Generic Drivers For Built In For Laptop Card Readers
If you have a laptop and have a problem getting the built in SD / MMC card reader to work then I've found the "generic" one from the Twinhead german site does OK. For X-64 use the Vista driver. Expanding the zip file will give you the 32 and 64 bit drivers.

The most "Generic" drivers seem to come from the F11Y laptop series but choose from other models if this doesn't work.

Most of these drivers are pretty "Generic" so should work with a huge amount of hardware irrespective of your actual model.

HP/DELL/COMPAQ owners are usually pretty lucky as the manufacturers sites are pretty OK. It's when you buy essentially an unknown brand of laptop where you can't find the "manufacturers" site as the laptop is badged under a different name. From the link just click on the Notebook model and get the drivers.

No stupid registration or "Let's scan your computer to see what driver you need" -- and then you are re-directed to a PAY service or more adware nonsense -- I HATE those sites --what if I'm using a different computer to get the driver than the one I install it on.

Dell E6400 Laptop USB (Built-In) Webcam Problem
After searching the web and this forum for some answers I realized there are many many problems with USB Webcams from different manufacturers. (please see the link below). My PC is fairly new Dell E6400 Laptop (Duo II with 4GB of RAM and nVidia video card with 256MB) with integrated Creative Webcam and despite all my efforts, installing different drivers in different compatiibility modes including the one released by Dell/Creative only few weeks ago - my webcam does not work.

The driver is installed and the device is being reported by Device Manager as working properly yet none of the applications such as Windows Live Messenger not Skype can utilize the video stream, reporting inability to connect to webcam and that a "different application is utilizing camera".

Since I found threads regarding many different webcam vendors (including MS), PC configurations and drivers involved I suspect that this is an issue with Windows 7 itself and not the webcams nor their drivers.

BTW. My webcam was properly working under Vista 64 i.e. before the upgrade to Win7 RC (7100). I am frsustrated that there is no release regarding this issue anb no available solution / fix to the problem. What is going on?

Win7 + X-Fi: Can't Decode DD/DTS (Isn't This Built Into
I'm getting a little frustrated because the latest Creative X-Fi drivers say this: Added Features or Enhancements:

For systems using Windows 7 or Windows Vista

* What U Hear feature is enabled.

To find out the Product ID of your audio device and if it supports the following feature in Windows XP, click here.

* Dolby® Digital and DTS® decode re-established for sound cards that included decoding in their Windows XP drivers (Not applicable for products that included a 3rd party software DVD player license in the package). I've checked the compatibility, and my Xtreme Music supports this DD/DTS decoding.

However, in the audio console I do not have a decoder tab and my SPDIF I/O tab has the SPDIF drop-down grayed out and set to "Default". How do I get my X-Fi Xtreme Music to hardware decode DD/DTS? (under Windows 7).
