Vista To Win7 Upgrade 32 And 64 Bit

I have both Vista Ultimate 32 and 64 bit with Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade coming after release.  Is it allowed to install the Vista 32 bit in one machine and the Vista 64bit in another machine and then upgrade each?  These were gotten when purchasing my system hardware for a new build.

Just want if it is legal to use both copies or if I can only use one of the version even though both keys are different?  Or if the keys are someway connected.

Upgrade From Vista Business 32 Bit To Win7 Pro 64 Bit
I have tried to install this software and am unable to do so, either from the unpacked download file, or from the iso file which I created following a thread on another forum.I also tried to install Win 7 Pro using the full retail DVD version I have also purchased and entering the product key I received in the e-mail from Digital River.  Is this because I tried a custom install after formatting the disc drive, rather than an upgrade install?

(And yes I did double check that I was entering the correct product key exactly as shown in the e-mail.)In other words is the product key for an upgrade version of the software different from the full version.  If it is then I will try to install from my retail DVD using the upgrade path which will be easier than trying to get the Digital River software to work.

I have tried running custom installation with windows 7 32 bit  upgrade disc, the option to choose between 32 bit to 64 bit never shows up. THe 64 bit disc does not work, and the 32 bit version obviously only installs 32 bit .  How do you install 64 bit version of windows 7?

Vista 64-bit To Win7 64-bit HP Upgrade Problem
I recently got the disc to upgrade to Win7. Using Vista 64-bit HP, I attempted to upgrade to Windows 7 HP x64, and I got the following incompatibility errors. "

You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.

32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc."

What is going on?

Cannot Upgrade From Win Vista 64-bit To Win7 64-bit
I'm running vista home premium 64-bit. and yet every time i run windows 7 set up i get the following compatibility report:

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

You can't upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go on-line to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.

32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.

yes i get both of those 'errors'. the windows 7 IS a 32/64-bit installation disc. it gives me the option to choose x32 or x64 at the start of installation. it just doesn't seem to be detecting my current 64-bit setup for some reason? if i chose to install x32 version, it gives me the "You can't upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows" error. and yet when i choose x64 installation it gives me BOTH errors mentioned above. whats going on here?

Vista 32 Bit To Win7 64 Bit With Upgrade Disc
I currently have vista 32 bit installed and was thinking of upgrading to windows 7 64 bit. From what I've read, it is possible to do this using the upgrade disc, but not with the in place upgrade. Wondering if anyone could explain how to do a proper clean install using the upgrade disc. Thanks.

BTW, I am running the home edition of vista and would be going to home premium of windows 7 if that makes any difference.

Could I Upgrade From Vista 32-bit To Win7 64-bit ?
I ordered the 50$ Windows 7 upgrade disk.

I realize that Windows 7 will need vista or XP already installed for the upgrade version of Windows 7.

But if I want to upgrade my Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit,

Will I be able to do it with this upgrade disk?

after all I will need a fresh install (because 32 to 64) and this is the upgrade version.

Upgrade Win7 From Vista (both 64 Bit)
I think I may have jumped the gun buying the Win7 Upgrade during the half off sale a few months ago. I'm running Vista64 on a XPS laptop and just received the Win7 Upgrade product today. Now I read that no upgrade in place exists for 64bit os's. Right?

If I'm wrong there, then no need to answer the rest. If that is true, can I dual boot Vista/Win7? A book I bought on Win7 shows a way to use the upgrade product to do a complete clean install, so I could do the dual boot.

If I am forced to use dual boot, will I need to reinstall all apps or can I use one of the migration tools to give Win7 access to the all the apps I already have installed? If I'm forced to reinstall all apps, how will apps like Office treat this install? In other words, would it consider itself as two installs? (1 vista, 1 Win7) If instead a complete clean install is required, again, does anyone know how Office would treat the reinstall?

Fail Upgrade To Win7 Ultimate RTM 32 Bit From Vista Ultimate 32 Bit
I just tried the upgrade from Vista 32bit Ultimate to Windows 7 32 Ultimate. Several issues occurred.

First the install uses an incorrect version of jraid.sys (I suspect it may be a 64 bit version from what I have read on various posts). After copying the files the system reboots and fails as the jraid.sys file is corrupt or wrong version. I booted the Vista load and copied the Vista version of jraid.sys from windowssystem32drivers to $Windows.~BTwindowssystem32drivers and the system reboots Windows 7 and continues the install process.

As it gets to the final stage, I get a message that the upgrade has failed (with no other info) and a rollback to Vista occurs. the $Windows.~BTsources
ollback folder has a setupact.log file that details the roll back but the setuperr.log file is empty.

Any suggestions?

No 'explorer' After In-place Upgrade (to Win7) From Vista Ultimate (both 64-bit)
After installing Windows 7 on a well-working VISTA Ultimate 64-bit machine with Window 7's 64-bit upgrade, a couple of hours later all seemed well - UNTIL ...The Welcome screen (normal - and in high resolution) 2550 x 1600 - then a black screen with only "Windows 7<new line> Evaluation copy, Build 7100".Never any progress after this - explorer won't load (or exits right after it loads).Ctrl-Alt-Delete brings up Windows Task Manager, and you can run virtually anything by selecting "New Task" and browsing to the appropriate executable.

Office 2007, Outlook, the Internet, etc.  can all be run without problem using this method. There are NO icons anywhere - no task bar - no start button - NOTHING.  Have tried countless times.  I cannot get to Windows Update (because there is NO start button).I DO get explorer to run in "Safe Mode" - but can't get resolution high.I did dual boot VISTA Ultimate and Windows 7 for several months.  It was only when I delete the previous beta and tried to install Windows 7 that all "H" broke loose.

I tried upgrading the video drivers (from ATI for 4890) and those installed OK - but can't get to the control panel for those either.I've tried everything.  Explorer (NOT INTERNET EXPLORER) will not run in 'normal mode.'I don't want to do a complete reinstall on a 'clean' HD unless I have to.  I can access all my data now using the Task Manager - but I have so many programs installed it would take days and days to redo everything from scratch.Any suggestions?

Vista 64-bit To Win7 32-bit Can't Use Backup And Restore Center
If you plan on moving from 64-bit to 32-bit (and I presume 32-bit to 64-bit) you will not be able to use the Windows 7 Backup and Restore Center as this application needs to run on the old computer first to backup the data.  You can't run the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Backup and Restore Center on Windows Vista 64-bit.

Therefore, you can't backup the data... the first step in the process. Can I use the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Backup and Restore Center to backup the data and then restore it using the 32-bit version of Windows 7?Can I use the 64-bit version of Vista's built-in Backup and Retore to backup the data, and use Windows 7 32-bit Backup and Restore Center to READ the data?

Guide To Drivers For Upgrading Dell Inspiron 1525 From Vista 32-bit To Win7 64-bit
guide to drivers for upgrading a Dell Inspiron 1525 from Vista 32-bit to Vista
64-bit or Windows 7 64-bit.

The Dell Inspiron 1525 is an extremely popular model of laptop and is a very good choice for a Dual-Core cpu at a relatively good price point. However, it has one very big drawback, it ships with only a 32 bit OS.

Simply put, a dual-core cpu is a 64-bit processor and the operating system that comes with the laptop is Microsoft Vista Home, which operates at 32-bits. You’ve paid for four lanes of highway, but you’re only using two! Upgrading to Windows XP 64 bit, Vista 64 bit, or even the Windows 7
beta (test version) 64 bit operating system is the only way to take advantage of the additional speed you’ve paid for. And it is worth it.

Dell does not support, suggest, or recommend upgrading your OS to anything other than the factory installed OS. So if you upgrade, you’re on your own. If you’re unsure of how this may affect your warranty, I strongly suggest you contact Dell before doing any modification of your OS.

I also highly suggest you back up all of your data, either to an online storage spot or to cd/dvd discs where you can easily access it after the upgrade is complete. (NOTE: I recommend you make that a bi-weekly, if not a bi-daily, habit) Backup! Backup! Backup!

Next make sure you have all of the original CD’s and installation material that came with your laptop in case you want to restore the original settings later on. There are hundreds of online guides that will walk you through the upgrade process. Google it and you should be able to find one that works for you.

Dell does not offer a readily available list of drivers for 64-bit operating systems. The purpose of this here is simply to give a list of drivers that I downloaded that worked for me. After doing a fresh, clean install of Vista 64-bit, I got out the Driver Installation disk that came with my Inspiron 1525.

On that disk, there are several drivers that are already 64-bit compatible. Insert the disk and select Vista 64 bit under Operating System. Click on extract for each driver you want and under
the View pane it will tell you if it is 64-bit compatible. Some drivers under the Vista 32 bit section will also show if they are compatible with 64 bit.

Install each of the drivers that meet the criteria. Alternatively, you can go to the Dell Website and enter your Service Tag number (from the back of the laptop) and Dell will provide you a list of all drivers that shipped with your laptop. Click on each one and select the Compatibility
option to see if it is 64 bit or not. If it is, download and install.

As I said before, Dell does not have a readily available list of drivers that may be needed after a clean install of a 64 bit OS. Here I will offer the drivers that I hunted down that worked for my installation of both Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 beta 64 bit.

These drivers are not necessarily listed as being for the Inspiron 1525, but I have installed
them and they provide the same functionality on the 1525 as their 32-bit counterparts. To find them, simply go to Dell’s website, in the drop down box next to the search bar select “Support and Help” and type the R number in the search bar. The driver should be the first one listed. Click and download. Once downloaded, double click to install. That simple.

Important:

Dell Support Center does not work with 64 bit OS.

Dell DataSafe Online works,
but not very well. For online backup, try MOXY.

Dell Media Direct 3.5 may be permanently deleted from your system if you upgrade and may not fully re-install even when performing a complete re-install via the reinstallation disk provided by Dell.

A few other things that I’d like to mention. First, is that you may find it difficult for some of your applications or software to work with a 64 bit OS. Try Compatibility mode. This will work for probably 60% - 80% of all software. For the rest, it’s hit or miss.

Check the softwares’ website for suggestions. Secondly, if your Inspiron 1525 has a built in webcam, try this: When installing, change the default installation directory from “C:ProgramFiles (x86)Dell” to just “C:Program FilesDell”.

This simple change was all that was needed to fix a very pesky problem which was preventing me from using the Webcam. And if you find any other software giving you a hard time, ie: ScreenSavers, this solution may well work for them too.

Third, you may need to re-install the Sigmatel STAC 92xx C-Major HD Audio driver after you install the webcam to get the built-in microphone to work correctly. During one install, I had to do this, during another I didn’t. So I just offer it up as a suggestion if needed.

NOTE: You can obtain a free test version of Windows 7 beta from Microsoft, but they do warn that its license expires in August of 2009 and you will need to uninstall it after that point. Therefore, I only recommend using Windows 7 for those who are technically inclined.

Stick with Vista if you don’t want to, or don’t like to, install a clean copy of the OS every few months. I will strongly urge you to purchase a copy of Windows 7 once it becomes commercially available as I have almost nothing but good things to say about the beta (test) version. I’m pretty sure the bag of chips will be included in the price.

Installing 64 Bit Win7 From Computer Running Vista 32 Bit
I understand that a custom (clean) install will be necessary to use Windows 7 64 bit.  However, will I be able to copy items from a c:Windows.old folder to the new operating system, or will I have to put anything I want to keep on an external drive and manually transfer them back from the external drive.

Upgrading ASUS F8 Vista (32 Bit) To Win7 64 Bit
First off windows 7 has installed and it works great aside for some some small issues. I am starting this thread in hopes that somebody else has done the footwork on this otherwise Ill do a little more research.

First after installing all of the drivers at the ASUS site I still have 2 unknown devices. I'm not sure of all the drivers I need to install because on their site (asus) it appears I have to get drivers from different releases of windows. Ill probably call them this afternoon or next week to see what drivers I need.

Second my computer properties doesn't display my computer make/model information, it says unknown, is there a way I can fix that?

Third: The media buttons and the fn keys aren't working. I think that could be an asus driver issue.

Where To Buy Upgrade From 64 Bit Vista To 64 Bit Win 7 ?
hello, I currently have a inspiron 531s motherboard with a OEM vista 32bit, I also have a license for vista 64 bit but its an upgrade version, is there any possible way that I can get a w7 upgrade license, I cant afford to buy the full version, I can only afford to get the upgrade version, I was wondering how much it is, a friend of mine purchased a upgrade license from his vista 64 bit to w7 for 50$ I was wondering if there is any way I can possibly do that, I prefer going from my vista 32 bit OEM to w7 64 bit that would be a lot easier but if that wont work I will install my 64 bit vista and go to w7 64 bit, I don't know where to buy the w7 upgrade.

What issues am I expected to face? The computer was originally installed with Vista Home 64.

Upgrade From Vista Ultimate 32 Bit
I have a dual boot machine with XP Pro & Visat Ultimate 32 currently. I bought the rig from a self-build guy a year ago, Looks like Vista was a bogey copy and I'm being prompted to buy a key (which I have no problem with)

That said, does anyone know WHEN seven becomes available for the public, will there be an edition available so I can just upgrade my Vista 32 and keep all my files / settings etc... ie that I don't have to scrub my hard drive.
