Upgrading W7 From Vista Upgrade Version

I currently have the full version of XP Pro 32. I completely skipped Vista.

I'm now thinking of buying Vista Home Premium Upgrade version because of the offer to get a free upgrade to Win 7 when officially launched.

So I have a few questions:

Is XP Pro -> Vista Home Premium -> W7 Home Premium a valid upgrade path?

I understand that the W7 DVD will have both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. Would I be right in thinking that I can install either, regardless of the fact that I started the upgrade path with a 32 bit XP?

And that I can only install 32 bit OR 64 bit - I can't have both on different PCs. Since I'm upgrading an upgrade, will I need to do a minimal XP install, followed by a minimal Vista install, followed by a W7 install or can I just show W7 the earlier installer disc on a clean installation?

Will my copy of W7 replace the Vista copy - in other words will I still have a single license, or can I install W7 on my main PC and have the Vista installation on the spare PC in the corner?

Upgrade Path From Localized Version Of Vista To MSDNAA EN US Version Of Win7
I'm running an OEM version of Windows Vista Home Premium, and since I'm a class B netizen I only had access to a localized version of my operative system. The MSDNAA graciously makes a copy of Windows 7 Professional English and a copy of Windows 7 Multilanguage Pack available to me. Howerer there is no localized version of the former and no WinVista equivalent of the latter. The Windows installer aborts pointing out the localization conflict and links me to this unhelpful page.

My OEM seems to have disabled the option of using Windows Anytime Upgrade, so I will not pour money into this option just to get the option to relocalize my OS to English 'just in case'. Also, I would really rather not lose a week into driver scavenging, clicking through programs installers, staring at progress bars getting filled (multiple times). I'd really want to just upgrade. Is this a dead end? Do I have to cross my fingers and wait for Godot err a localized version of Win7 to appear on MSDNAA? Or is there a way around this?

Perfectdisk Version 10 Stops Upgrade Of Vista 32
I went to upgrade my Dell XPS M1730 notebook from vista 32bit and when running the combatibility test it said that I needed to uninstall Norton 2009 and Perfect Disk 10 which I did. Restarted and tried the install again from within Vista and it still asked  for Perfect disk to be uninstalled even thone driveugh it was not on the system any longer. I even went to regedit and made sure there were no registry items left behind and there were not.

So a suggestion in the final code is somehow to make sure that when Perfect disk is installed and uninstalled as suggested the upgrade can go ahead. I did a clean install of the 64bit project deleting the previous windows without issue and all went well and all drivers except for the Nvida 9700 GT mobile series were installed which is nice. Great job. Fast and resonsive for the most.

Installing 7 To SSD With Upgrade Version, Vista On Another HDD
I searched for a solution to my issue and could not quite find anything exactly like it. Here is what I have and what I am looking to do:

I currently have a HDD in an HP system, with OEM Vista loaded on it. I just purchased a retail copy of Windows 7 Home premium upgrade and a SSD. I plan to use the SSD for boot, windows, and World of Warcraft.

What I want: To do a clean install of Windows 7 on the SSD. I plan to wipeout the HDD afterward and use it as a storage drive, as I have no use for Vista.

Question: What is the easiest way to do this? I was planning to just hook it all up, pop the Windows 7 disk in, start it up, and do a custom install to the SSD. Load up windows, activate the thing, then wipe the HDD. However, someone said that might not work and I might have to call Microsoft with my Vista key.

Upgrade From Win XP / Vista To Win7: Product Key Language Version
We currently run 3 PCs at home (all 32 bit):

PC 1: German Windows Vista Home Premium
PC 2 & 3: English Windows XP Home

I'd like to purchase the Windows 7 family pack (English) to upgrade all of the PCs (clean install preferred).

Questions:

1. Can all 3 PCs be upgraded to the English version of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with the family pack, despite the different language versions?

2. When performing a clean install, is it sufficient to enter the product key of the previously installed system when using the upgrade disk/key or is the old system required on the harddisk?

3. Just to confirm: The family pack comes with both, the 32 bit and 64 bit version for Windows 7 Home Premium?

Vista's Version Of Movie Maker Is Deleted When You Upgrade To The Win 7 RC
I cannot find Vista's version of Windows Movie Maker now that I upgraded from Vista to the Windows 7 RC, so I assume it was deleted in the process even though it is compatible from what I understand. Windows Live Movie Maker Beta remained, but this is a very basic editor right now as it currently doesn't allow splicing, doesn't allow editing of audio tracks, and has very limited output choices (two).

Upgrade Or Full Version To Install Win 7 64-bit From Vista 32-bit
I have Windows Vista 32-bit. Would I be able to install Windows 7 64-bit with an UPGRADE disk or would I have to use a "FULL VERSION" disk? The question answered on the Windows 7 page doesn't seem to answer this, or at least clearly. Yes, I know I have to do a custom install.

Upgrading From XP To Win7 Via Vista
I've been told that it is possible to maintain all ones applications and settings when upgrading from XP to windows 7, if you first upgrade XP to Vista and then the Vista to Windows 7. Can anyone verify that? It would be more time consuming but given the amount of apps I have installed and need, it is the best choice in my view. I have an old Vista disc somewhere so there is no extra expense.

Anyone done this before? or heard of it working?

I did not see any duplicate accounts in profiles. I saw four different profiles with different numbers, but the last profile had a huge list of numbers, there has to be another way for someone who's a little afraid to mess with the registry.

Can't Delete Vista Backups After Upgrading

While in Vista, I had automatic backups to an external drive. I cannot delete these old backups manually, and the Backup and Restore module does not recognize them as backups, so it won't manage them.

How can I delete these old backups. When I try to delete them, I get an "Access denied" error. I can't even open the folder with the name of the computer.

Upgrading To Win7 From Vista On A Dual Boot System (XP)
I have XP on the C: drive and Vista on the D: drive in a dual boot system.I'm trying to upgrade Vista to Windows 7.  The initial upgrade went fine, but upon the first reboot I get an error message stating the hptxx3 driver is in conflict (out of date).  It then restores Vista.  I took the High Point card out and renamed the file hptxxw.sy1 instead of the system file.It still will not let me continue the upgrade.  I don't need xp on the C: drive any longer.  What should I do?  Is there a way to edit the boot loader file to remove this line of code? Or What?

Upgrading From Win 7 RC To Final Release Via Upgrade Disc
I have been using the RC on my PC for the past few weeks, and it has been working great so far. However, I have also heard about the recent, limited time discount for the upgrades, and so I rushed to set my preorder. However, I have some questions that I want to verify. First, if Windows 7 Build 7100 is the only OS on my computer, will I be able to install the final release version of Windows 7 via an upgrade disc?

Second, if this is not the case, I do have a copy of the Windows Vista installation DVD on hand, but Vista is currently not installed on my computer. Will I have to reinstall vista AND activate it again before I am able to finally install Windows 7 once and for all?

Is Windows 7 A Upgraded Version From Vista ?
I and my boss disagree about the 7 being a upgrade. He says 7 is a upgrade like 95 to 98 and few other previous OS after those. But I says it isn't a upgrade from Vista, and it is has more new features and way above Vista to be consider  Vista SE. Just to diffenert. But I do like Vista, I'm a Vista fan, but everyone else isn't a Vista fan like me at work. They don't care much for Vista.

So please helps us out and be a techinal as possible. I work at a computer repair store (small bussiness) so be as techincal as possible. And let us know who is right.

PS: Was Vista build from stractch from XP or did they make Vista from the very beginning? Same for 7 as well.

Guide To Drivers For Upgrading Dell Inspiron 1525 From Vista 32-bit To Win7 64-bit
guide to drivers for upgrading a Dell Inspiron 1525 from Vista 32-bit to Vista
64-bit or Windows 7 64-bit.

The Dell Inspiron 1525 is an extremely popular model of laptop and is a very good choice for a Dual-Core cpu at a relatively good price point. However, it has one very big drawback, it ships with only a 32 bit OS.

Simply put, a dual-core cpu is a 64-bit processor and the operating system that comes with the laptop is Microsoft Vista Home, which operates at 32-bits. You’ve paid for four lanes of highway, but you’re only using two! Upgrading to Windows XP 64 bit, Vista 64 bit, or even the Windows 7
beta (test version) 64 bit operating system is the only way to take advantage of the additional speed you’ve paid for. And it is worth it.

Dell does not support, suggest, or recommend upgrading your OS to anything other than the factory installed OS. So if you upgrade, you’re on your own. If you’re unsure of how this may affect your warranty, I strongly suggest you contact Dell before doing any modification of your OS.

I also highly suggest you back up all of your data, either to an online storage spot or to cd/dvd discs where you can easily access it after the upgrade is complete. (NOTE: I recommend you make that a bi-weekly, if not a bi-daily, habit) Backup! Backup! Backup!

Next make sure you have all of the original CD’s and installation material that came with your laptop in case you want to restore the original settings later on. There are hundreds of online guides that will walk you through the upgrade process. Google it and you should be able to find one that works for you.

Dell does not offer a readily available list of drivers for 64-bit operating systems. The purpose of this here is simply to give a list of drivers that I downloaded that worked for me. After doing a fresh, clean install of Vista 64-bit, I got out the Driver Installation disk that came with my Inspiron 1525.

On that disk, there are several drivers that are already 64-bit compatible. Insert the disk and select Vista 64 bit under Operating System. Click on extract for each driver you want and under
the View pane it will tell you if it is 64-bit compatible. Some drivers under the Vista 32 bit section will also show if they are compatible with 64 bit.

Install each of the drivers that meet the criteria. Alternatively, you can go to the Dell Website and enter your Service Tag number (from the back of the laptop) and Dell will provide you a list of all drivers that shipped with your laptop. Click on each one and select the Compatibility
option to see if it is 64 bit or not. If it is, download and install.

As I said before, Dell does not have a readily available list of drivers that may be needed after a clean install of a 64 bit OS. Here I will offer the drivers that I hunted down that worked for my installation of both Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 beta 64 bit.

These drivers are not necessarily listed as being for the Inspiron 1525, but I have installed
them and they provide the same functionality on the 1525 as their 32-bit counterparts. To find them, simply go to Dell’s website, in the drop down box next to the search bar select “Support and Help” and type the R number in the search bar. The driver should be the first one listed. Click and download. Once downloaded, double click to install. That simple.

Important:

Dell Support Center does not work with 64 bit OS.

Dell DataSafe Online works,
but not very well. For online backup, try MOXY.

Dell Media Direct 3.5 may be permanently deleted from your system if you upgrade and may not fully re-install even when performing a complete re-install via the reinstallation disk provided by Dell.

A few other things that I’d like to mention. First, is that you may find it difficult for some of your applications or software to work with a 64 bit OS. Try Compatibility mode. This will work for probably 60% - 80% of all software. For the rest, it’s hit or miss.

Check the softwares’ website for suggestions. Secondly, if your Inspiron 1525 has a built in webcam, try this: When installing, change the default installation directory from “C:ProgramFiles (x86)Dell” to just “C:Program FilesDell”.

This simple change was all that was needed to fix a very pesky problem which was preventing me from using the Webcam. And if you find any other software giving you a hard time, ie: ScreenSavers, this solution may well work for them too.

Third, you may need to re-install the Sigmatel STAC 92xx C-Major HD Audio driver after you install the webcam to get the built-in microphone to work correctly. During one install, I had to do this, during another I didn’t. So I just offer it up as a suggestion if needed.

NOTE: You can obtain a free test version of Windows 7 beta from Microsoft, but they do warn that its license expires in August of 2009 and you will need to uninstall it after that point. Therefore, I only recommend using Windows 7 for those who are technically inclined.

Stick with Vista if you don’t want to, or don’t like to, install a clean copy of the OS every few months. I will strongly urge you to purchase a copy of Windows 7 once it becomes commercially available as I have almost nothing but good things to say about the beta (test) version. I’m pretty sure the bag of chips will be included in the price.
