View 4 RepliesI just noticed that I cannot open my task manager anymore, I right clicked on my task bar and click on Start task manager and nothing happens, did also the CTRL + ALT + DEL then click on Start task manager still nothing, no recent changes made in computer or newly installed programs.

I have had multiple instances now where Windows 7 hung after I started up and logged into an account. It seems to happen when I try to start a program by double-clicking on it. For example, it has hung when I tried to start CCleaner or Firefox. When I get into this state, Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing. In some cases, I can right-click on the Taskbar and choose "Task Manager," but it won't run (I just get the hourglass cursor). Today I tried to start Firefox and nothing happened, and the hourglass cursor shows in the Taskbar, so I can't even see the menu for the Task Manager.
This is happening on a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. It seems to occur when I don't wait long enough for the login to finish. When it happens, the only way out is to hold down the power key until it shuts off the system. Of course Windows is too stupid to tell me when it is done loading stuff into memory and starting its services; why can't they simply tell me when the login process is done and the system is ready to use? I find it infuriating that a supposedly multi-threaded, multi-tasking operating system can be so flaky. But enough of my rant; on to the possible cause:
I strongly suspect that my problems may be caused by SpySweeper, since it seems to be the last program that loads at login. (Or at least it's the last one to put up an annoying splash screen.) I use the following programs on my machine:
Windows Defender
Avast! Antivirus
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
SuperAntiSpyware
Spybot Search & Destroy
SpySweeper
I have read that SpySweeper sometimes conflicts with other programs, so I turned off real-time protection for Windows Defender. I have read conflicting opinions on whether SpySweeper conflicts with Spybot's TeaTimer program. Do I need to somehow turn off TeaTimer too?
Even if SpySweeper is the cause of my problems, I find it very disturbing that misbehaving or even deadlocked application programs should be able to prevent the Task Manager from running.
After downoading some windows critical updates (this is about 6 months ago) my computer would lock up after windows started and I could no do anything until I started task manager. All I have to do is start task manager and close it and then everything is fine. Becuase of this, I just didnt bother trying to find a fix but I wondered if anyone has advice on how to correct this problem.

Ctrl+Alt+del : get error message saying task manager not able to open, turn off using power switch. As nothing responds that is what I do. Checked anti-virus, and have run various scans, no problems reported. I have tried using different web browsers and the problem even occurred even when no browser open. Music continued playing until end of track. Have updated drivers, no overheating problems, PC 1 year old; MB: ASRock H67DE3; CPU: intel i5 2500; 8Go RAM; Windows 7 64-bits; ssd 64 Go (14.5 Go free); 1 To SATA 6Gb/s hard drive (840 Go free). Had no orblems until this last month. What proceedure can I take?

Whenever installing a program lately (can't remember how long -- I've been ignoring it for a while), Windows doesn't respond when I click the .exe installer file. But as soon as I hit Ctrl - Alt - Del and open the Task Manager, Windows suddenly wakes up and installs the program without a hitch. I don't have to do anything in Task Manager; simply opening it is enough. Also, the computer hasn't crashed in this state. If I want to open another already-installed program and use it, I can without any problems. It's just that it completely ignores my command to run the .exe file until I threaten it with Task Manager.
The first couple of times, before I thought of opening Task Manager, I'd double click the .exe file several thousand times, as you do, wondering why it wasn't doing anything. Then, when I opened the Task Manager, it'd try to install the program several thousand times. Now I know to simply double click the .exe file, then hit Ctrl - Alt - Del, and voila, the program is installed.
What I want to know is, why doesn't Windows install the program in the first place?
FYI, the programs I was having trouble with were (from memory) Dropbox, Skype, memoQ (translation memory software) and a few others I can't remember. I doubt that the programs were the problem though. I'm pretty sure this is a Windows problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new custom built gaming PC and it works fine in terms of performance. I've had the PC for just over a week and on two occasions I have had the problem where the PC would just completely freeze to the extent that I can't open task manager, move the mouse and the keyboard would stop working. Also the Skype call I was in would just stop. This would force me to have to reboot my PC using the button on the tower to shut it down. So far the two occasions have happened when I'm not actually on a game and when the problems did happen I was using two different programs. The first occasion I was on OpenOffice and the second occasion. I was just browsing using Firefox so I don't think it is program specific.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have installed this game, Singularity. The game worked fine for a week then suddenly It would crash as soon as it was opened from the desktop shortcut. The game is patched to it's latest version, I have direct x all other runtimes and PhysX installed from the CD. The shortcut it set to run as Admin in compatibility. No matter if i try with the desktop shortcut or from the exe in the folder or from the shortcut in the start menu the game will crash asap. The only way this game runs is by pulling up task manager and selecting New Task then browsing to the games exe. Malwarebytes reports no viruses or any malware. Tried reinstalling, and it didn't help.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had a 32 bit Vista installed on my machine first. Then I installed Windows 7 on another partition, thinking that I'd have a dual boot set up. But the second OS became the default system to appear after a bootup and the bootup manager did not appear at all.
So I tried creating another partition and installing another OS there -- this time XP. Now XP became the default OS, and bootup manager still did not appear.
Using EasyBCD, I made sure that the other OSes were properly recorded in the bootup manager. They were. But still...the bootup manager did not appear during bootup.
What do you think I should do? Obviously Windows' bootup manager is somehow impaired. Should I try GRUB?
It started a couple of days ago when an error appears on one of my hard drives (second drive) during bootup, but after the first encounter I logged into windows fine and thought nothing of it. A while after my desktop froze and I was unable to do anything so I restarted. The error was still there but I logged into windows fine again, but the desktop froze instantly after I clicked anything and this continued. Now I can only just reach the login screen and it will freeze there.I have been into safe mode and tried various scans. I have ran CCleaner which did not solve the problem, Norton360 fails to do any scan at all and I also used MalwareBytes to scan for malware. During the malware scan it found around 8 infections, but when it started scanning a certain area on my main drive inside the windows folder the desktop froze. The exact same thing has happened on two occasions.
Safe mode now seems to freeze after a short while, including on the login screen and it seems I am running out of options. I want to make formatting my hard drives a last resort as I have important files that I do not want to lose.I have also physically opened my desktop, cleaned for dust and reconnected both hard drives to try and solve the error but to no avail.
I am having a bit of an odd issue with my Alienware MX11 laptop. I just restored it to a previous "checkpoint" after just having the error "Failed to save all the components for the file \System32\000052af. This file is corrupted or unreadable This error may be cause by a PC hardware problem." After restoring via Control Panel it is running generally fine. However, my issue is wanting to reset it to factory default settings. I've reset to the Factory Image before with previous Dell laptops, but for some reason the repair menu will not load past the black screen with the grey bar on the bottom with the words "Windows is loading files..." After the bar fills white (very quickly might I add) it returns to being gray and sits there.
Is there another way to return to factory image or a way to fix this?
This laptop is still fairly young (got it last month) and the warrenty is still good.
Can't get into windows, black screen with blinking cursor for some reason I can't even get into windows 7, after I get pass the screen that says "asus", my laptop brand, It goes into a black screen with a blinking cursor in the left hand corner like this: Click this bar to view the full image. I'm unable to do anything at that point, it just blinks. I can't even boot into safe mode now, the only think I'm able to get into is the Bios Setup Utility menus and Asus' express gate, which is just a media/internet/gaming/skype thing that doesn't allow .exe files to run. This came factory installed so I don't have a windows 7 disc to run fixes.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhenever I load up windows 7 with bootcamp, my cpu jumps to 100 % usage almost as soon as I log in. I can not figure out what is taking up my cpu power. When I open up task manager, there are no processes running anywhere near 100%. Also, when task manager is open, the cpu goes back to normal at around 2-3% cpu usage. WIthout task manager, the cpu gets hot fast and the fans start in full speed! Its insane! I play a lot of video games on my computer, and when I dont have task manager open, there is insane amounts of framerate lag. For the last few days I've been running some CPU intensive programs which I wrote. My laptop was getting really hot (70+�C), so I decided to blow into the vent to clear the dust out. However all this did was clog the fan with dust and it stopped spinning, so I used a safety pin to hook the dust out. The fan started spinning and it blew a load of old dust out, and my laptop is now running in the low 40's.
However now task manager shows the CPU usage as 100%, but when I sort the processes by CPU time, nothing is using much of the processor, firefox sometimes jumps up to 50%, but it doesn't stay there for long.Even when I boot into ubuntu, everything is still running really slowly.Also, speedfan reports my CPU speed as 600mhz, sometimes it shows a few other values (1400, 1200, 1800 etc), I have two core2 duo 1.83 ghz processors, so I wasn't expecting to see 600mhz!
Below is my HijackThis log file. There are too many apps on the task manager and I am unable to turn them off. When I kill a process, it immediately starts again (SearchIndexer.exe Connectifyd.exe etc., and I noticed that all are running as services). How can this happen? And more importantly is there a remedy[CODE]
View 4 Replies View RelatedEveryone I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and I have a problem with the task manager.The problem is when I try to start task manager it loads for like half a second and doesn't do anything. If I do ctrl+alt+esc it just selects an open program. I've even scanned for malware but I have noticed something weird when I go to regedit under Policies then System there is only (Default) and WallpaperStyle. I think a virus may have disable my account as administrator.

It does not have any controls for looking at applications or performance. I must turn it off with the taskbar window, close window. Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause and cure?
