I was wondering about sound cards, If I get a sound card that works with Vista will it work with Windows 7? Can someone tell me a good cheap sound card that would work with a Desk top Dell Computer and work with windows 7?

ATI Card Works Fine In Win 7 Ult RC, Not In Win7 Prof
I've been using the Windows 7 Ultimate release candidate as an evaluation copy for a while now with no problems. I have an ATI radeon mobility X1600 graphics card in my laptop and I'm using an external monitor through my laptop's DVI port. I bought a product key for Windows 7 professional and therefore had to reinstall that version because I'm using Ultimate as the evaluation copy. I have each version on its own partition so I can switch back and forth between the two.

The problem is that the newly installed windows professional copy will not recognize my ATI graphics card and I can't use my external monitor. It has the standard windows VGA adapter drivers installed. I've installed and run the ATI file i downloaded off their site, '9-9_beta_win7_32_dd_CC', and this accomplishes nothing. I looked in device manager on the working ultimate version and the card is installed correctly so I copied all of the drivers and files it says its using and then tried to update the driver for the standard windows VGA adapter and it says it can't find any better drivers than the current ones.

I remember initially having this same problem when I first installed the Windows 7 Ultimate RC several months ago but I have no clue how I was able to get it to work... Any ideas?

FPS Drop Because Of Sound Card / Sound Card Drivers
I've recently upgraded my os to windows 7, and noticed a significant

fps drop in all games I've installed. The problem seems to come from the sound card.

I've disabled it in device manager and I gained a steady 15-20 more in most of the applications.

Any idea what to do? Is it a driver issue or something? I got an Athlon 64x2 4600+, Asus M2N mainboard,

2 gigs of ram, Gainward 8800GS video card, Sound Blaster Live 24bit soundcard.

Drivers are downloaded from creative.

Sound Only Works With Headphones Or Ext.speakers
My friend's laptop has a weird problem. It was running vista fine, sound worked and everything. One day, the internal speakers randomly stopped emitting any sound. However, they do make sound effect sounds while the computer is booting... so they're not broken.

I figured it was a software problem, so he just reformatted and installed 7. Same problem. Makes the booting up noises, "Gamers Republic... BOOM", obviously coming from the internal speakers. Once into windows, in the HD control panel, it shows as something being plugged into the green analog input, but nothing is plugged in. So, no matter what, windows is detecting that he has speakers plugged into his laptop so it refuses to use his internal speakers.

His only option is to use headphones / external speakers.

Drivers are up to date.

Any ideas?

SB Audigy SE - Driver Works, Sound Doesn't
So I have a SB Audigy SE (SB0570) and I installed Windows 7 about a month ago. Initially, my sound did not work even though I installed the drivers correctly. It began working one day when I restarted the computer in safe mode and then restarted it again normally.

Today, however, it failed again. The only thing that I can think of that has changed is that I installed drivers and software for my Sony Handycam last night. I've since uninstalled the software, but to no avail. When I click on the sound icon in the system tray with Winamp playing, I can see the green bar jumping up and down, signifying that there is sound. I've tried using speakers and headphones, so I know it's the sound card that's causing the problem.

I have uninstalled my drivers and I've tried daniel_k's drivers (first the ones that were too new for the SE - lol - and then the ones that were designed for the SE, the 2.0 version), the drivers that Windows 7 automatically downloaded for me, the 917x support pack, and the drivers that Creative provides on their site for Windows 7. None of them made any difference. My current driver reports its version as 5.12.1.2020, and Windows says that it's working correctly.

Can anyone tell me why I can't get sound even though my drivers seem to work? What might have caused this seemingly random problem?

Surround Sound Works Via HDMI, But Not WMV, No Audio
I've got a bit of a problem with my audio with my new installation of Windows 7. Previously I had Vista installed, and had no problems with my Realtek HD audio. Installed Windows 7 everything looked good, then realized my Sony A/V receiver model SA-WCT100 was not outputting my movie collection in surround 5.1 like it use to using Vista.

I figured, thats cool, probably need to install ac3filter_1_51a, I had to in Vista, and it worked a treat when I enabled SPDIF pass through. I guess I should mention Im using HDMI all the way through, from my PC to the receiver, from the receiver to the LCD. Well, that didn't fix it, everything still plays in stereo. After scratching my head and clicking here and there, I finally found a little tab in the sound settings of my Realtek HDMI setting called 'Custom'.

I selected it, it said to enable AC3, DTS, etc click this box will require a restart. I said awesome, sounds like just what I need. I clicked, and rebooted. I went into WMC, and setup my audio wizard again, and selected 5.1, and tested, and this time it reported 5.1 on my Sony receiver as before it only showed 2 channels (Stereo). I played some of my DVD rips, and bam my DVD rips were playing surround sound again.

I was like that was easy enough. I went to test my Blu-Ray rips that I had converted to WMV HD using TMPGEnc Xpress 4.0, and the video started to play, and I was like, wheres the damn sound. I noticed on the receiver, it didn't report anything for sound. I had no idea what was going on. My surround sound was finally working for everything, but my WMV HD videos had no sound output. I mean I can't even get stereo or anything out of them now. At least before the WMV played in stereo, now I can't hear anything.

Please someone tell me what could be the problem, I don't know what else to try. I don't want to have to revert back to stereo, and disable the magic box under custom in my sound setting.

I have downloaded the latest Realtek drivers form Realtek, version 2.35 for the ATI HDMI audio, and the Digital Audio. I also have the latest drivers for my integrated Radeon 3200 graphics card. I read that sometimes a high resolution can affect the audio, so I lowered my resolution from 1080p, and that didn't help, which I figured it wouldn't.

CMI8738 Sound Only Works Through Front Jack, Not Rear Ports
My CMI8738 sound card only transmits sound through the front jack (headphone jack on the front of my computer case) since installing Win7 RC 64-bit (interestingly enough, I had the opposite problem in XP 32-bit: only the rear jacks worked and the front port had no sound).

I'm pretty sure this issue has more to do with the 64-bit than the actual OS I'm running. Unfortunately, I can't seem to locate any drivers that give me sound through the rear port. On XP, my sound card came with an application that gave me some sound configuration options, but the installation won't run for me on my current OS.

Does anyone know of anything I can try to get sound to come from the sound jacks on the back of my computer case again?

Homegroup Works With Ethernet Card Not With Wifi
I've started a homegroup on a desktop pc running windows 7 RC 64-bit and connect to my router through an ethernet card.

I can join and use this homegroup from my netbook running windows 7 RC 32-bit but only when using the ethernet (wired) connection.

As soon as I unplug the network cable the homegroup becomes unavailable and cannot be joined again.
Yet this netbook can use other network services and in particular the internet with either the onboard wifi or with the ethernet card.

The homegroup troubleshooter didn't help and I cannotsee  any network configuration that would be different between both interfaces (both have ipv4 and ipv6 enabled).

The problem persists even when the software firewall is off on both computers.

Is there something specific to windows 7 homegroups over wifi ?

Cannot Find Creative Sound Blaster Xtreme Audio Sound Card
My fairly new PC: Core2Quad Q6700 on ASUS P5K (Intel P35) with RealTek HD Audio chip, plus Creative Soundblaster Xtreme Audio internal sound card.

I've installed Windows 7RC on a new partition on my HD alongside Vista Ultimate. I've experienced no installation problem, but Win7RC does not recognize my SB sound card at all! So, I can't even update the driver!

It recognized the Realtek chip and my external USB mic, but not the sound card that had been installed for audio quality!!

To come to think of it, I've had the problem with Vista, with my Dragon Naturally Speaking Pro 10.1 not recognizing the "existence of any sound system" in an administrator account I used to install the software. However, the software recognizes all my audio systems in my other user account (admin) and the software runs smoothly!!

Any connection? What's the problem here? Anyone have any idea?

Edit: I also found that the stereo mix feature of the Realtek HD audio isn't recognized either. (Recognized in Vista and my old XP)

Sound Blaster Audigy PCI Card Sound Problem
I installed windows 7 home premium today on my computer on a dedicated hard disk. All went fine and did windows updates to all my driver issues. At this point I had sound. I then installed ubuntu 9.10 on a separate physical disk without issue. Ubuntu installed a boot loader (Grub) which recognised windows 7 and I could boot into both OSes (dual boot), both working happily (including sound).

I then installed some apps in ubuntu (incl. wine) and now when I boot into windows 7, I don't have any sound. The sound icon is happy, the device manager is happy. I haven't touched the windows disk or installation, yet the sound doesn't work. The sound hardware is a Sound Blaster Audigy PCI card.

This doesn't make sense surely. Any ideas?

Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Sound Card Compatibility
I just bought a new pc from Dell. I opted out of buying the SB sound card they had as an option and now I am sorta regretting that. I loaded RC 7100 as soon as I got the machine and after going through this forum I am sorta left with the impression that SB cards don't work with Win 7. Is that really the case?

I was looking at an "Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Sound Card" but if it will just cause me grief it's not worth it. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can get and not pull my hair out trying to get it to work? The main game I play sounds sorta mediocre with the on-board sound.

No Sound With Audigy 2 Sound Card
This is probably just a stop gap but I was finally able to get my old Creative Audigy 2 card to work with 5.1 surround by using Audigy 4 drivers for Windows 7. I haven't been able to adjust bass and treble yet but I've been too busy just enjoying the music to get around to looking for ways to make that happen. Music sounds better than it ever did in XP or Vista!

It may not be a complete fix but at least it'll get you some sound until they come up with driver for those of us with older sound cards. Be patient as it takes a while for the complete install!

Should Win 7 Works On All Computers ?
I my self believe that we should update our hardware to follow new operating systems instead of trying to make new OS works fine on our 2,3,4 years old computers...One of the reasons i built a new system is to be able to run up-to-date windows systems. Will not go far with that but luckly my windows 7 working like charm and IE8 is working also perfect since i installed the os on c drive as main os.

I would like to know if bugs are 100% system failer or it has to do more with hardware issues as well! How can some body be sure about! I my self can amost tell but shouldnt microsoft offer users a very clear notice about the compatible hardware they built windows 7 on-for example.

Change Motherboard - Will Win 7 Works ?
I have a question about Windows re-activation.

If I change a motherboard/cpu in an Dell PC, will I still be able to use Windows 7 on that computer? I know that I can get the drivers loaded ok in safe mode, but will I need to re-activate Windows 7 to get it working again?

I read something a long time ago about hardware changes and activation, but I don't know if this will happen in this case. No big deal if I just need to ring up, but I wanted to check it wouldn't just break.

Boot Menu Shows 2 Win 7, Only One Works
Had beta on my machine. Worked fine. I used the windows xp instal disk, repair function (R) console to make a new Master Boot, and I deleted and reformated the partition Beta was on. Thus, I was cleanly prepared to instal Windows 7 RC.The installation went without incident other than a fine install. It works as smooth as the Beta did, but strangely the bootup OS select window shows two incidents of Windows 7, meaning the Beta select did not clean out of the new boot up screen.

So, if I select the wrong one nothing's there.  Really not a big issue, but if you the reader has the knowledge that can rid my machine of that "wrong" windows 7 entry and are willing to share it with me, please, please do.Once again, at boot up I have three os selections to chose from:  XP (works fine), Windows 7 (works fine), and another Windows 7 (no workee). My intention is to remove the one that doesn't work. Please, how do I do that?

Avermedia A800 USB DVB-T Works And Does Not Work In Win 7 X64
During the install process Windows 7 automatically installs a driver for the Aver A800 DVB-T receiver.

The Aver TV program itself (the Vista x64 version) works with Windows 7 ... (everything ... watching TV, recording, programmed recording, etc.)

The Win7 Media Center itself is able to find the receiver (connected via USB) but crashes every time when looking for channels. The crash results in a bluescreen or simply a system freeze (something I never saw in Vista ;) )

Does anybody know if you have to do something special to make it work with the MC?

Is this a USB-receiver problem with Windows 7? A friend of mine reports the same issue with another USB DVB-T receiver (Terratec Cinergy S USB)?
