Second Drive Not Recognized With Win7 RC

I have an AMD 64 (single core) processor based machine.  It recently became my 'second' PC for testing.  Previously Windows XP Pro was installed an used for a few years.  This PC has two IDE hard drives.  THe system in on the first drive, the second is for data only.  With XP this was, of course, no problem.

Flash Drive Not Recognized When Trying To Boot Win7
I've created the ISO file and moved it to the 4g drive using the AWESOME guide found here. However, the BIOS doesn't seem to recognize that the device is present. I've done some research and found that some usb drives aren't compatible with the BIOS? I made usb storage the only available boot option and nothing showed up.

However when I look at the drive while in Vista through my computer->G: It shows up as a windows system. I've also seen somewhere about enabling "Legacy usb"? I didn't find anything like that. Should I just got buy another flash drive and try again?

Hard Drive Recognized In BIOS But Not In Win7
hard drive registers in BIOS, but not in the windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installation screen. Any questions I will answer RIGHT away. Oh dear God please help me. I took it in to a repair shop and I think I knew more than they did and left without any substantive help (but a $40 bill ). Do I need to format the HD? Would drivers help? All the websites say everything should be compatible - no problem - but nothing here.

External Hard Drive (USB) Not Being Recognized As A Drive
I am having trouble with my external hard drive (USB) not being recognized as a drive. I have a Dell Dim 9200 which was running Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7 and now my external hard drive is not recognized.

It is a Venus DB3 enclosure with a WD 500 GB HD.

Under Devices and Printers "Cypress AT2LP (3.03.0000.2)" shows as unspecified.

Everytime I turn the HD on/off the computer recognizes that it was turned on.

USB Device Not Recognized Only In Win7
I have a WD Passport 160GB portable HDD, which worked fine in XP on the same computer before I installed Windows 7.

As many other people experienced, the once the device is connected, it will show USB device not recognized. However, my mouse and keyboard, which are USB also, are working flawlessly.

Besides the Passport, I have a Maxtor External HDD which is not working also, I tried every single USB port on the computer and it just won't work. And this one is powered by a small power adapter, so it should not be anything related to USB power. On the other hand, the Maxtor HDD is visible from BIOS, just not in Windows 7.

My computer is single boot Windows 7 RC 64bit, clean install.

I'm using Q6600, Foxconn MARS P35 mobo, Seagate 7200.10 250GB HDD, PNY 8600GT, OCZ 2x2GB DDR2 800 ram. I don't think the hardware have any problem since in XP everything worked fine, and all the drivers are up to date according to the device manager in Windows 7.

Any advice?

Upgrade Xp To Win7 - Partition Not Recognized
I'm currently running Windows XP (SP3)and am trying to run the Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade. Each time the installation gets to the point of starting to erase the XP program files and load the Win 7 files and stops with a statement that it doesn't recognize the C partition where XP is installed. The PC has a single SATA HD with only a single partition. Is there some step that's left of the installation instructions that I could be missing?

CD Drive Not Recognized After Reboot
I'm using a Dell laptop Studio XPS 1640. Ok, I was about to upgrade to Windows 7 and it listed a couple of programs that needed to be deleted, so I uninstalled them. The 2nd or 3rd time I was required to restart my computer, it froze at the "Shutting Down..." screen for about 20 minutes. I waited and waited and decided to power down. I turned it back on, and it didnt say Windows was not shut down properly, so i figured it was ok.

However when I booted back up, I was going to eject and re-insert the upgrade CD. I hit eject, nothing happens. Hit eject again, nothing happens. I go to Computer to try and view the CD thats in my CD Drive....NOTHING SHOWS UP! MY CD drive is now UNRECOGNIZED by my computer! Now I cant complete the upgrade. Not to mention, the upgrade made me uninstall itunes and my virus protection, saying a new version will be installed automatically after the upgrade.

SATA Drive Not Recognized
I attempted to install win 7 RC to my secondary drive.,which is SATA. After loading the drivers from FLOPPY, i was able to install the files onto the drive. After 1st reboot, the machine went into an endless look rebooting. I am assuming that after that reboot, it lost the drivers for the sata drive. my primary drive is IDE. The only way I got to install 7 was empty a partition on my ide drive. This OS does not look ready for prime time, not even a little.

Win7 X64 HP Pavilion DV6-1140ez Hardware Not Recognized
I'm trying to fix the last hardware problems I find with Windows 7 x64 RC1 version after battling for some of the hardware (touchpad Synaptics detected but not completely functional - had to install Synaptics official Vista 64 complete driver to make it work with vertical scroll ....)  on my HP Pavilion I just bought one month ago.

I find this hardware not wanting to be installed in unspecified section of Devices :

- A309 that I presume to be the DVB T Tuner but even with official driver no luck.
- 3 Base System Devices located on PCI bus 6, device 0, function 1, 3 and 4. I presume them to be related to motherboard components such as SMB, and bus stuff ...
- SD Host Controller that I can't figure out why it seems to appear in unspecified. Though I didn't try to use it .... so not sure it's not functional.

Can't Get NEW Hard Drive To Be Recognized
I have THREE Hard Drives.

1) XP. Old PATA hard drive

2) Windows 7 SATA

3) New Hard Drive (E; with program files, back up, images, music.

Sorry, I had to edit this message as every time I went to type E colon, slash, it gave a smiley face. so the E; = E colon, slash to indicate E assigned hard drive letter, the new hard drive.

When I boot to XP with the new hard drive (E; shows up fine.

When I disconnect XP and boot to Windows 7, the new hard drive (E; shows that it installs fine (lower right in windows, shows that the OS see's it and says it installed fine), yet I cannot see it.

The configuration that does not work is two (2) SATA drives, one with Windows 7, the other, the new hard drive.

To be sure, I disconnected the Windows 7, connected XP (PATA) and booted again, sure enough, the new hard drive (E; is fine and shows up.

I then disconnect and attach the Windows 7 hard drive with the new hard drive, (I even tried moving the SATA cable around) and Windows 7 boots fine, shows me that it installs the newly found hard drive (E; but does not show up on my computer.

Now, here is what may, or may not be a bug.

The new hard drive was formatted NTFS in WINDOWS XP, the drive letter assigned was E:, when I boot to Windows 7, I have a Virtual Clone Drive which also has the letter E: assigned to it. Could it be possible that Windows 7 does not know what to do since the Virtual Hard Drive was there first and therefore, doesn't show the new hard drive when running Windows 7?

I have tried everything I can to get it to be seen in Win 7 to no avail. Again, it works fine in XP, but does not show up in Windows 7.

Has anyone heard of this problem before? Do I need to rename, or assigned a different hard drive letter to E:? If so, how do I do that?

MSI CD-RW MS-8348 CD Drive Not Recognized
Built a new machine: Intel DG35EC MOBO, Intel E8400 CPU. Nothing fancy, no programs installed. The CD used to install Windows 7 64 Bit is not recognized.

1) Known good IDE Drive (it did the installation)

2) No programs installed

3) Recognized in the BIOS

4) Appears in device manager as MS-8348 ATA Device w/(Windows cannot load the device driver for the hardware) comment. So, how come? XP, Vista, Ubuntu recognized and used this drive.

Why doesn't Windows 7 have drivers to use this plain Jane generic CD drive (MSI).Same problem with Ativa CD drive under the identical conditions.Otherwise ecstatic about Windows 7. However the very-soon date for release surely will crimp current PC sales.

I am running Win7 RC1

DVD Drive Is No Longer Recognized By The System
I am using a Gateway GT5428 w/Intel Pentium D processor 935 and Windows Vista Home Premium.  Windows 7 RC cannot install due to the compatability issue and when I follow the directions and remove the One Care and reboot - the E: drive is gone so no installation can take place.

I have tried to disconnect the drive and reboot and then shut down again and reboot but the system still does not reconize the drive.  How do I get around this problem because the boot disk absolutely will not install with the Windows Live Care on the system.

Western Digital WD1001FALS 1T Drive Not Recognized
Am running Windows 7 RTM and have a sata3 hot swap tray and I use storage manager to take a 320G drive offline and then insert and try to put a WD1001FALS 1T drive online. Windows 7 does not recognize any drive being put online. This scenario works fine with Server 2008 R1 in an almost identical computer (same mobo and bios anyway). I can hot swap 320G and 640G drives in this fashion just fine. It is only the 1T drive that does not work dynamically.

If I boot with the drive already inserted then Windows 7 recognizes it just fine.

Any ideas or suggestions?

DVD Drive Not Properly Recognized In Explorer
I installed Windows 7, 64 bit last week as a dual boot on a system with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ @ 2800 MHz processor, 2048 MB of RAM, and an nVidia nForce 560 chipset. I have two internal hard drives and two USB ones attached. XP Pro is on the other partition. The DVD drive type is ATAPI, model HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H62N

After installing I thought the DVD drive flamed out. It spins when I put a disk in, and the title shows in Explorer, but clicking on the drive link in the left column leads to disaster. A green bar moves like a snail across  the address field. It never completes.

Contents of the drive never appear. When I try to close the window, it hangs. Task Manager is never able to end that task. Sometimes the option to log off on the preliminary screen for Task Manager works, but more often I end up forcing the system off and doing a hard reboot. Explore seems to remain stuck on whatever drive it was in when I activated the G: link.

I thought the drive had died and was on the verge of ordering  a new one when my friendly repairman suggested that I purchase a laser lens cleaner and run that before ordering. When I got the cleaner, it did not run as I'd been led to believe. Using the G:Winclean in Run hung the computer. While I was rebooting, I popped into XP. To my astonishment, the utility autobooted and ran. Then I stuck a program disk in and the drive ran flawlessly.

When I booted back to 7, nothing had changed. The drive did not work. I went to Device Manager and uninstalled the drive, then rebooted and let it reinstall. No change. I clicked on the Update Driver button, and learned that it has the latest drivers.

I just put in a data disk that works in XP. After I let it spin a couple of minutes, I clicked to open the drive G. On the first try, Drive H opened. When I clicked on G again, the contents panel shows desktop.ini (found in C:Users|MeAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsBurnBurn)   as being ready to burn. How that file got there baffles me. I sure didn't put it there! Ejecting the disk avoided the need to do a hard reboot.

Inserting another data disk has the same results. A commercial music disk is not recognized at all, and is ejected.

Now what?

Second SATA Hard Disk Drive Not Recognized
We are at RTM already for Windows 7 ads still no update on this issue. Meanwhile I found this procedure worked for me so I hope others will also find this fix helpful.

Even in the latest build (7600) additional HDD's are not installed after a clean installation of Windows 7 (ie: drives other than the system drive Windows installed to).

I hear of many people (like myself) going as far as using forensic tools to establish if their precious data remains intact which of course it is, as are the partition structures. This can be simply verified by connecting the drive to another system with XP or Vista installed which will then show up in my computer.

The drives appear in the machine BIOS however may or may not appear in the Windows7 Disk management Utility. If it is an old drive with existing data it may appear initialized but not formatted and may ask to format the drive! If it is a new drive then you may initialize it but find it impossible to format!!

The problem appears to be the disk and or volume drivers which Windows refuses to install automatically for additional SSD's and HDD's. While searching for drivers by any method provided (search online & manually) does not produce any positive results, it is possible to load the drivers if you know exactly what to look for, which is the pnp disk driver and Volume manager driver located within C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository

So far of two methods I have found, method 1 has proved the most successful inwhich you use the 'Update Driver Software' option of the unknown device (your drive) found in the Device Manager.

1a.
Open The Device Manager
Select 'Other Devices' and then the drive
Select it and 'Update Driver Software' or from "properties - Driver TAB - Update Driver"
select 'Browse My Computer'
then 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
scroll to 'Disk drives' and select it and next if needed
select 'Have Disk' and browse to disk.inf within the:

"C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepositorydisk.inf_x86_neutral_b431b61a11f8df6c" folder
select it; click 'OK' select the appropriate device if presented. Your hard drive will now show up in Device Manager under 'Disk Drives'

1b.
Under 'Other Devices' you may find 'Storage Manager'
select it and 'Update Driver Software' or from "properties - Driver TAB - Update Driver"
select 'Browse My Computer for driver software'
Check 'include subfolders' and browse to:

'C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository' folder,
then select 'Next' allow Windows to install the driver

Your HDD or SSD will now show in 'My computer' (or 'Disk Management' if it is a new drive where the disk can now be formatted).

2.
If in doubt as to which 'Other Device' is your drive, then select each unknown device in turn and select 'Update driver'. Use the 'Browse My Computer for driver software' Check 'include subfolders' and browse to:

'C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository' folder,
select 'Next' and allow Windows to install drivers it finds.
Still have problems, then return to step 1

3.
The other method (still confirming it's success rate) is updating the device in the new 'Hardware and Printers' selection from Windows Start Menu (which I believe is new and improved in Windows7)

Hope this is useful to all those having this issue and also if anyone would like to enlighten us on why this is happening, we'll all be much appreciated.

Hard Disk Drive Not Recognized During XP Or Win 7 Setup
I recently purchased a WD Scorpio Black 320GB 2.5" HDD for my Gateway MX6920 notebook. I wanted to upgrade to this larger, faster HDD and replaced it into my notebook and attempted to install Windows 7. During setup it stopped and gave the error 0xc00000e9 for "unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive ......".

I tried installing Windows XP and it gets to a blue screen to choose a Repair of Windows or a fresh install. Choosing either one returns a blue screen that says system can not find a Hard disk connected.

I put this drive into an enclosure and formatted it in another computer. Also it is recognized in BIOS. I'm running BIOS version 77.08 if relevant.
