No 'explorer' After In-place Upgrade (to Win7) From Vista Ultimate (both 64-bit)
After installing Windows 7 on a well-working VISTA Ultimate 64-bit machine with Window 7's 64-bit upgrade, a couple of hours later all seemed well - UNTIL ...The Welcome screen (normal - and in high resolution) 2550 x 1600 - then a black screen with only "Windows 7<new line> Evaluation copy, Build 7100".Never any progress after this - explorer won't load (or exits right after it loads).Ctrl-Alt-Delete brings up Windows Task Manager, and you can run virtually anything by selecting "New Task" and browsing to the appropriate executable.Â
Office 2007, Outlook, the Internet, etc. can all be run without problem using this method. There are NO icons anywhere - no task bar - no start button - NOTHING. Have tried countless times. I cannot get to Windows Update (because there is NO start button).I DO get explorer to run in "Safe Mode" - but can't get resolution high.I did dual boot VISTA Ultimate and Windows 7 for several months. It was only when I delete the previous beta and tried to install Windows 7 that all "H" broke loose.
I tried upgrading the video drivers (from ATI for 4890) and those installed OK - but can't get to the control panel for those either.I've tried everything. Explorer (NOT INTERNET EXPLORER) will not run in 'normal mode.'I don't want to do a complete reinstall on a 'clean' HD unless I have to. I can access all my data now using the Task Manager - but I have so many programs installed it would take days and days to redo everything from scratch.Any suggestions?

Fail Upgrade To Win7 Ultimate RTM 32 Bit From Vista Ultimate 32 Bit
I just tried the upgrade from Vista 32bit Ultimate to Windows 7 32 Ultimate. Several issues occurred. First the install uses an incorrect version of jraid.sys (I suspect it may be a 64 bit version from what I have read on various posts). After copying the files the system reboots and fails as the jraid.sys file is corrupt or wrong version. I booted the Vista load and copied the Vista version of jraid.sys from windowssystem32drivers to $Windows.~BTwindowssystem32drivers and the system reboots Windows 7 and continues the install process. As it gets to the final stage, I get a message that the upgrade has failed (with no other info) and a rollback to Vista occurs. the $Windows.~BTsources ollback folder has a setupact.log file that details the roll back but the setuperr.log file is empty. Any suggestions?

Upgraded Vista Ultimate To Win7 Ultimate RTM Ok, But Boot Screen Is Still Vista's
I got my copy of Win & Ultimate and a legal key from TechNet, did an upgrade of my Vista Ultimate computer. All went well and other than my new copy of Norton Internet Security 2009 not working (long story for another thread). The problem I'm having is that the boot screen (Starting Windows with the 4 colored balls and the windows logo) did not change, I still have the old Vista one with the boring green progress bar. I never dual booted this system and I have tried the fixes out on the net - using an administrator command prompt to send: bcdedit /set {current} locale en-US or bcdboot %WinDir% /l en-US Neither one worked. This is not a fatal flaw, but it is annoying in an otherwise perfect upgrade. Is there a registry setting I can change or another fix to try for this? It used to be easy to change the boot screen in XP and not too hard in Vista, how do I get my correct boot screen back in Windows 7?

In-place Upgrade To 32-bit Win 7 Home Premium Or Ultimate
I currently have vista 32 bit home premium and wish I had vista ultimate. I want to purchase windows 7 ultimate UPGRADE. I checked around and there does not seem to be a definitive answer on the issue. I downloaded windows 7 upgrade advisor and found that it reports that you can in-fact upgrade to windows 7 ultimate form home premium. Before I purchase though, does anyone know if this is correct? I do not wanna be out 200 dollars. The exact text used by the upgrade advisor is below. "You can do an in-place upgrade to 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate. If you choose to upgrade to a different edition you will need to perform a clean installation. Go online to see detailed instructions about how to upgrade."

Vista Ultimate X64 To Win 7 Ultimate X64 In Place Upgrade Issue
I have, twice now, tried to do an in place upgrade from Windows Vista x64 Ultimate to Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. Vista is pretty much fully patched up to date, and Windows 7 is RTM and is choosing the option to download the latest updates for install. Both times it has taken about 11 hours to work through most of the phases of the upgrade, and then apparently hang in the transferring setting stages. It has hung at exactly the same point each time: 458886 of 607131 (for some strange reason, it reports this as 62%). The "hang" is not absolute, which is to say that all the rotation of "please wait..." messages continues, so it's not a totally lockup. That said, I let it be for about 8 hours the first time with no changes, and a whopping 35 hours last time (about 46 hours of total time with the upgrade running) - again without any change. Since there is no option to cancel, I was forced to shut down both times, and the rollback has taken perhaps a half hour. There are, of course, several questions to come out of this, but the primary one is "Where is the log?", and how can I determine what the heck it was working on when it decided to go away. Frankly, the idea that someone would RTM this when I'm hearing that a 5 hour in place upgrade is "fast", and it can take as long as 85 hours seems a bit more than ridiculous, but I'm doing my best to go with the flow.

Vista 64-bit To Win7 32-bit Can't Use Backup And Restore Center
If you plan on moving from 64-bit to 32-bit (and I presume 32-bit to 64-bit) you will not be able to use the Windows 7 Backup and Restore Center as this application needs to run on the old computer first to backup the data. You can't run the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Backup and Restore Center on Windows Vista 64-bit. Therefore, you can't backup the data... the first step in the process. Can I use the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Backup and Restore Center to backup the data and then restore it using the 32-bit version of Windows 7?Can I use the 64-bit version of Vista's built-in Backup and Retore to backup the data, and use Windows 7 32-bit Backup and Restore Center to READ the data?

Explorer: Changing Default Path From 'Libary' To 'Computer'
I even tried replacing the quick launch icon with the Windows Explorer Desktop icon. It still thinks I need to use the libary. When I use programs like Mp3tag when I return to the menu after editing an album, I have to change the path back to the drive where I am working. Is there a way to change the default folder view from 'Library' to 'Computer' ?

Vista Ultimate To Win7 Ultimate RTM Upgrade: Incompatible App Removal Error
Disk copy of Vista Ultimate used for upgrade attempt. First upgrade attempt identified several issues with apps needing to be uninstalled. First removed Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, but deferred reboot to complete, until rest of problem apps were uninstalled. After reboot, restarted upgrade install with check compatability online test (Win7 Upgrade Advistor Beta) - no problems found. Then, "install now" option taken: completed temp file copy, setup started, accepted option for "go online for latest updates...", accepted license terms, then, very quickly received the following "Check Compatability" errors: Windows needs to be restarted so necessary changes to system files can be made before continuing. For these items, make the following changes: Uninstall these programs. Open Control Panel and search for "uninstall a program". Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 - Examination of registry and installed programs and features list shows no sign of uninstalled app.

Vista Ultimate Upgrade To Win7 Ultimate Failing At Last Reboot
I've attempted to upgrade a machine 3 times as indicated. During the final reboot to Win 7 all appears fine until I get to a screen stating that the upgrade failed and the previous version will be restored. The restore works fine. The machine is dual core box with 2GB RAM. The upgrade advisor indicates no problems bar the fact that Ultimate Extras will no longer be available. I'm running setup from the d: drive (rather than CDROM drive). Unfortunately the process gives no indication as to why the upgrade has failed. Where can I find upgrade logs and what should I look for?

Upgrade From Vista Ultimate 32 Bit
I have a dual boot machine with XP Pro & Visat Ultimate 32 currently. I bought the rig from a self-build guy a year ago, Looks like Vista was a bogey copy and I'm being prompted to buy a key (which I have no problem with) That said, does anyone know WHEN seven becomes available for the public, will there be an edition available so I can just upgrade my Vista 32 and keep all my files / settings etc... ie that I don't have to scrub my hard drive.

Student Upgrade From Vista Ultimate 64 Bit Without A Clean Install
I purchased the academic version of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit under an apparent misunderstanding that I could upgrade and not have to do a complete reinstall which would cost me 3 days of thesis development time to reinstall the Autodesk, Adobe & other software that I use. Could someone please explain to me why (after paying a higher price for Vista Ultimate in the first place) I cannot purchase a student version of Windows 7 Ultimate or upgrade without a clean install which requires a complete reinstall of all of the programs on my computer? Is there something that I am overlooking?

Ultimate 64-bit Doesn't Support 4GB RAM
I have had Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit RTM installed for a couple of months now, but there is one issue that I have not been able to solve for this whole time. When I first went to install Windows 7, I had to remove a 2GB stick of RAM in order for the installer to even start without blue screen-ing on me. So I took the RAM out and managed to get 7 installed (yay!). However, when I tried to reinsert the RAM, I got the same BSOD that I would when trying to install 7 with the other 2GB in. I gave up after a couple of tries, and it has taken me this long to try to solve the issue. I am pretty sure that my specs are 7 Ultimate x64 compatible? Because if not, that is most probably the source of the error. Otherwise, could anyone lend a hand? It really hurts having 2GB of RAM lying around in a drawer being useless.

Vista Home Premium Upgrade To Win7 Ultimate
I have Vista Home Premium and am trying to upgrade to windows 7 Ultimate. all the charts say this is possible. I originally bought Pro but i saw your chartys this and got Ultimate but when i attempt to upgrade...the screen says this isn't possible. i need to do a full install. I think this is not very good and if I want support I have to pay for it. What about the software I already got? Why won't it let me upgade?Report:Windows Vistaâ„¢ Home Premium cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You'll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate , click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”. I should note: this is a fairly new Pc (3-4 months) that came with Vista Home Premium . I am not happy with it and debated to drop back to XP but had already installed everything (other software). So, i decided to upgrade to 7 but now find i have to go through the same process.

Sony Says I Can't Upgrade From 7 Premium To Ultimate
I am very interested in purchasing a new Sony L series ( all in one ) computer that comes with Windows 7 Home Premium installed . I had my wife call Sony the other day to find out if it could be upgraded to Ultimate and they said no because the lower end model does not come installed with Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium . Now I should mention that some of their laptops in the same price range as the L I am looking at can be ordered on-line with Ultimate installed and don't have Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium, so it makes no sense to me that the model I am interested in cannot be upgraded . Anybody know or have ideas/suggestions/advice/whatever ?

Upgrade From Vista Business 32 Bit To Win7 Pro 64 Bit
I have tried to install this software and am unable to do so, either from the unpacked download file, or from the iso file which I created following a thread on another forum.I also tried to install Win 7 Pro using the full retail DVD version I have also purchased and entering the product key I received in the e-mail from Digital River. Is this because I tried a custom install after formatting the disc drive, rather than an upgrade install? (And yes I did double check that I was entering the correct product key exactly as shown in the e-mail.)In other words is the product key for an upgrade version of the software different from the full version. If it is then I will try to install from my retail DVD using the upgrade path which will be easier than trying to get the Digital River software to work.
