LG Optical Drive Disappears From Device List

I have a HTPC with dual boot WinXP and Win7 RC7100. I have a problem with my optical drive in Win7, but the problem does not occur in WinXP.

Problem Description:

On booting up the system the optical drive works fine and appears in My Computer and the Device manager. At some point (usually within three minutes of bootup) the drive disappears from My Computer and the Device manager – it just vanishes…

There are no errors or windows explaining why it happens, there are no errors shown in the event logs either around the time it occurs.

Once the drive “disappears” the tray cannot be opened by the button on the drive and it isn’t redetected if you run the search for new devices gizmo.

If you just leave it in that state, periodically the drive light flashes and there is a clicking noise. In the event logs it shows an error “drive not ready”. The error repeatedly appears sometimes every few seconds for a few minutes. It then stops and might not do it again for hours, or might start again in a few minutes.

Whilst all this is going on, the drive still doesn’t show in device manager and you cant eject the tray by the switch…

I would suspect a faulty drive, but as I said above it works completely fine in WinXP.

I have tried stripping the machine of any added software, which didn’t take long as all I have is Kaspersky AV, PowerDVD and software for the LCD on my Antec case.

The drive in question is an LG GGC-H20L (Sata CD/DVD Writter, Blu-Ray Reader).

I have tried searching on the net for others with the same problem as me, but surprisingly mostly I found people saying their same model drive works fine on Win7.

On the other hand the couple of people I did find with similar problems both stated that LG had refused to help them saying they wouldn’t support Win7 until it was released. The closest thread to my problem I could find on here was this one:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprohardware/thread/1a40914b-d90d-4d0f-b228-942d8880218e

At the moment I can only see a few options:

1. Buy another drive from a different manufacturer and hope for the best.
2. Wait for Win7 to be released and hope that LG fix the problem with a driver update.

Any advice or ideas on how to solve this without resorting to the two options above would be much appreciated.

Optical Drive Disappears When Rebooting
Rebooting disappears the optical drive when attempting to view it by clicking on "Computer."  It also disappears from "devices."  However, shutting down and starting does not affect the system in any way.

Hence, when I'm instructed to reboot, I now simply shut down and start rather than reboot.  I haven't been able to find out the source of this problem.  You should know that this is a desktop with a very small form factor; i.e., mini ITX with an Atom and the optical drive is a slim laptop optical drive with an adapter for use on a desktop setup.

ATI Driver Disappears After Inserting USB Device
I have a Toshiba A215-S4697 AMD 642 with ATI X1200 video.  I can get the drivers to install just fine, but here is the odd part.  If I insert my USB memory stick, long range wireless card (Linkys WUSB300N), or mouse (Microsoft wireless notebook mouse) in the small time frame between the POST and the time it takes to come up to the login screen my ATI drivers fail to load and the Cataylst Control Center tells me no ATI card detected.

My max resolution then drops to 1024x768 and I have to uninstall all ATI software then restart an reinstall.  Now I make sure to not plug in any USB device unless the computer is turned off or I am already logged in to Windows.  Any idea what causes this freak out or is there a work around.  I can deal with it but its just an annoyance, especially if the girl friend gets home before me and plugs the damn mouse in and I have to reinstall the video again.

Storage Device Does Not Appear In List Of Network Locations
I have installed Windows 7RC and everything is fine except Action Center Backup can't see my Network Storage Device.

Windows Explorer can see the Network Storage Device.  Yet, the drive does not appear in the list of network locations.

The Network Storage Device is a Maxtor, Central Axis.

I had it working before I installed Windows 7RC, under Vista.

Optical Drive Problems
I recently installed windows 7 professional on my system and now my optical drive is acting weird.  The drive will run CDs just fine (I can install and rip. haven't tested burning), but it will have nothing to do with DVDs.  When I put a DVD in it, it doesn't do anything.  After a while, if I go to my computer and double click on the disk drive, the optical drive will eject the disk and say "Please insert disk".  I have looked in the device manager and it says the driver is working properly.  I have tried looking into the "regedit" and the upper and lower filters aren't there.

I have tried uninstalling the drivers and rebooting so that windows installs them (no luck). I have also tried starting with the driver signature enforcement disabled but nothing happens. My ODD is a (SATA) Samsung Sh-S223Q in case you wanted to know. One thing that i noticed that I thought was odd was that my device manager had 2 drivers for my Optical Drive. They are HCB JGPYF*X SCSI CdRom Device and TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223Q ATA Device. I have a virtual drive (daemon tools lite) installed but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Optical Drive Issues
It seems as though my two optical dvd-rom & dvd-ram drives are working only intermittently, since loading windows 7 64 ultimate from vista 64 ultimate.

While there are many drivers that I have saved as downloads plus those that can be found online there are drivers that are only available via disk, so having the optical drives consistently function properly is of the utmost importance.

Anyone with any suggestions are solutions please let us all know your thoughts.

Thumbnails And Optical Drive Problem
I know how to disable thumbnails system wide and this is not what I want to do.

The problem my system is having is when I place a disc such as an SVCD in the drive and want to copy one of the files. When I go into the folder with the videos, Windows tries to make thumbnails of all the files or at least it tries to gather information on them. The problem is that since it's an optical disc, there is only one laser, so there is a very long explorer.exe freeze while it tries to do so. I guess it is reading a little of each file at a time and trying for all of them at once.

Is there a tweak or a setting I can change without affecting videos stored on the HDDs?

Hard Drive Disappears After A Few Minutes
I have installed and been using Win7 RC for about a month and a half.  During that time my computer booted very fast, and was working very well.  About 2 weeks ago, I turned on my computer after a critical update from Microsoft and it now takes about 30 minutes to boot.

Once booted, my secondary Hard Drive (Western Digital 500 GB 7200RPM SATA) will disappear after about 2 minutes.  If I try to access it during those two minutes, it just hangs with the green bar in the address area taking a long time to go from left to right.  before it completes the window will close and the drive will disappear.

The Bios sees the drive fine.  I have tried changing SATA ports (went from STAT2 to SATA4).  One forum said to set the jumper on the drive to mark it as slave instead of auto select.  I pulled out the drive and read the jumper settings, but all it says is that it does not need jumpers and there are no other instructions.

I then tried to roll back the critical update using a restore point, however this did not help and when i checked the critical update was still installed (or was re-installed without my knowledge).

At this point I don't know if my drive has died, or if it is a software issue.  I am hoping the community can help with this issue.  Please let me know what specs you need to help diagnose this issue and I will add them when I get home.

Second Hard Drive Disappears After Install
I built a dual core / pentium with 2 gb of ram. Installed vista, and couldn't figure out why it wasn't finding my secondary hard dive. After a few months, I finally found that the key to solving the problem was by going into the ADNINISTRATIVE TOOLS and doing something. Now, whenever I install windows 7; I have the same problem. When I install windows 7; it asks me if I want to install it on disk 0 or disk 1.

So, windows 7 does find the second hard drive. But, after the install is complete, it only shows 1 hard drive. I'd like to do a fresh install of widows 7 rc 1, if anyone can help me out. I've found windows 7 to be faster and more stable than windows vista. I always backup my data files to my secondary hard drive, then do a clean installation of windows seven (even though it's only an RC 1 release). I don't dual boot or anything. any answers?

DVD Drive Disappears After Installing Various Drivers
This was a weird one. I did a clean install of RC1. I used my Dell driver CD to reinstall drivers. After installing the sound, chipset, and SATA drivers the DVD drive would disappear at the end of each installation. I rebooted and BIOS did not detect it. I had to power off at the end of each installation to get the drive back.

I've copied the entire contents of the drive to the hard drive and had no problems. I installed one of the drivers from this copy on the hard drive and had no problems. This is all now working so I probably won't play too much with it but I wanted to put it out there for others to consider.

Drive identified as: TSSTcorp_DVD+-RW_TS-L633B

Also lists D200. I'm wondering if this is the firmware version.

CD/DVD Drive Disappears After Successful Installation
I have installed it on both a desktop and a laptop. A few days after installing on the desktop, I noticed the CD drive was gone. I could boot from it, but Windows couldn't see it. I tried uninstalling the driver, updating the driver, etc, but no go. I finally did a system restore and it took several tries and choosing different ones, but I finally got a restore that put the CD Drive back in.

While doing System Restore, I got error message that I had problems with the Disk and had to run a chkdsk /f to fix them. Tonight I discovered that the DVD-R on my laptop is gone. I again tried the same steps to repair the broken drive in Device Manager, and then I tried Restore. I got same messages that harddisk needed fixing. I am now in the middle of that. This is just plain weird. Anyone have an explanation.

I am not convinced that anything was wrong with the hard drives, esp on my new laptop. I think it is a false positive. Anyone have any tips for reinstalling optical drives. Nothing I seem to try works and obviously, one cannot go to the Internet for an updated Win7 driver.

LG DVD Drive Disappears After My PC Returns From Sleep
I have a strange issue with my PC (Gigabyte motherboard, Intel i5 processor, Windows 7 professional):

When I start my PC, all drives are listed and work fine. But when my PC is sent to sleep, and later is "woken up" again, my DVD drive (LG, model Gsa-h10n) is nowhere to be seen. It is not even listed in the device manager.

Just to be clear: this is an internal IDE drive. My HDD is a Sata drive.

Explorer Optical Drive Default To Open Not Play

It's just a nuisance to forget, double click, get the error(because I have WMP disabled in local security policy) then right click on the drive icon and click Open. Life would be easier if I could just double-click it!! Anyone know the secret?

Upgrade Problems From Vista, No Optical Drive Detected
I am having major problems upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista. I have an HP dv3 with Windows Vista 64-bit. I am using the HP upgrade disc with the upgrade option. I first ran into problems when the Windows 7 disc told me that some components would not be installed properly, namely that I needed to upgrade my keyboard filter driver.

I did what I was told and when I tried to re-start the upgrade process the disc told me that I would need to re-start my computer. I did that and when it re-started, a message from HP popped up saying that my optical drive was no longer connected and that I needed to re-connect it in order for the upgrade to continue. So now my optical drive is not reading anything and I do not know what has happened or how to even fix it.

CD/DVD Drive Suddenly Disappears And Reappears On Ejecting The Cd
After deciding to use Windows 7 (32bit, German) on my Laptop like it is for real, I installed several programs including Daemon Tools and the latest Version of Alcohol 120%, which both didn't work. I can not tell whether those two programs are responsible, but i discovered following behaviour when I installed Office 2003 (and later Visual Studio 2008) via CD/DVD:

There was no CD-Drive in "Computer" nor in the "Gerätemanager" (List of Hardware), and it did not appear when I tried to find new Hardware. When I decided to skip installing I ejected the CD and discovered that the CD Drive Icon suddenly appeared in the "Computer" list next to my hard disk drive artitions.

Now I could normally access all data on the cd, until it suddenly disappeared while still installing (after 2~5 minutes or so). After ejecting and continuing the install this happened again and again.

I also tried to uninstall the SPTD-Driver from Daemontools and the current version of Alkohol 120% via the uninstall routine of the SPTD-Driver itself, which still lead to the message, that a driver has been deactivated. I set this to ignore, which obviously did not solve my problem. Even in the energy-settings I did not find an appropriate setting.

I use an Dell Inspiron 15, has anybody else discovered such a problem or has any idea how to help?

A Required CD/DVD Drive Device Is Missing
So I have this problem that it would appear heaps of others have:

I have a Kogan Agora pro: Kogan Agora Netbook PRO - Kogan Technologies Pty Ltd

It does have a sata hdd. I looked through the BIOS but couldn't find any places to change the sata settings to AHCI or raid.

I am trying to install from a usb key (using an ISO I created from an install dvd) but had the same problem with a downloaded iso. Also tried to install using the default language settings (As identified by David76 in another thread) but no luck.

I think it relates to the SATA HDD. I put the drivers for the netbook onto a seperate usb drive which it finds and lists in the box but none of the drivers do anything (hit next it thinks about things for a while then says no new drivers found).

I am really starting to get a bit ticked and regretting my move away from linux. If it wasn't for a few particular programs I use that don't work on linux i would have given up ages ago.
