Keep EFS Private Key On Removable Media
Is it possible to store the private key for an EFS certificate on normal removable media, such as an SD card, in a way that EFS encrypted files can be accessed when the card is online but not when the card is offline? If so, how is this done?Â

Cannot Export Certificate With Private Key
I have downloaded a digital certificate with private key from authority CA using a link. And the certificate was installed with no errors. Now when I'm going to export the certificate it will NOT allow me to export with private key. The option "Yes, export with private key" was grayed out. From MMC, add snap in certificate > local computer > certificate > certificatename. In this location "I can see the certificate image with a key on it". Is this mean that the import is successful with private key? If so, how to export correctly? Kindly help please!

Backup Error: Insert Removable Media
running create a new, full backup. when blank dvd gets full windows 7 gives a messsage "insert removable media". Windows backup needs a cd/dvd or usb drive to continue. Insert the required one. But the drive door will not open to let me insert a blank dvd. The drive door will not open until I reboot the system and i have only 91% of the backup complete.

Copying EFS Encrypted Files Over Network Does Not Work
Copying EFS encrypted files over the network ceased working between my Win7 machines. This is a known limitation until Vista. It worked fine between my Win7 machines for a while, but now I do get the error "... you need permission..." like with Vista. I takes a very long time with Win7 showing the Calculating dialog until the error displays. Same EFS certificate installed on both machines. Sharing encrypted file via an external hard disk works fine. Because I thought the problem resulted from switching from "Allow HomeGroup to manage homegroup connections" to "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers" I switched back to HomeGroup managed - but this did not help. Copying EFS encrypted files unencrypted is extremely slow Because copying encrypted files over LAN does not work I clicked yes when asked to copy them unencrypted (planning to reencrypt them on the destination machine). The following copy operation was extremely slow, so I had to cancel it. At least cancelling worked without hanging Explorer :-) [Apr 4, 2009] I observed that Explorer first tries to copy all selected files and then deletes them again before the "copy unencryped" dialog shows (on can see the file names being created and deleted on the destination machine). So I had to resort to using an external disk to move encrypted files from one machine to another. This problem is severely crippeling the usability of EFS.

Can A Win 7 N Key Be Used To Install On Non-N Media ?
I have non-N keys and N keys. There are options to download non-N media and N media. I've already downloaded the non-N media, so can I use N keys on the non-N media or will I need to download the N media just to find out? I know the difference between the two being the non-inclusion of WMP and the whole story about the EU, etc.. Just wondering if I can use my N keys on the non-N ISO I have here.

Windows Seven Full Media With Upgrade Key
I purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad T500 a month ago with the understanding I would get a free upgrade to Windows Seven... Well, it wasn't free and I have yet to even hear from Lenovo on the status of the order. Something about the distributors not getting the right information from Lenovo in the first place... i.e. something you would expect from Lenovo considering their track record of great customer service. Anyhow, at this point I'm fed up with the fact that I have not revived my upgrade and it is impacting my work. I have a few friends with full, retail, copies of Windows Seven and was wondering: can I install Seven on my machine without a key, using their media, then input my upgrade key when it arrives? I have Vista Business x64 and my upgrade is Seven Professional x64. Even if I have to do a "double-install" (i.e. install a full copy of Seven, then "upgrade" that copy with my upgrade media/key) I would be fine. But I don't want to risk a full format/reinstall before I do that.

Activation Key For Window 7 Media Center
I have a Sony Media Center PC, equipped with a cable card tuner for digtal/premium TV viewing and recording. The cable card is recognized in Vista, but to activate it I need a Media Center Activation Key that is included with my PC. When I try to activate the cable card in Windows 7, I am prompted for a MC Activation Key but I wasn't given one by Microsoft. I tried the Win7 Key, but no luck. Any ideas where I can get a Media Center Activation Key?

Valid License Key With No Access To Media
My company just purchased a new Compaq tower yesterday that came with Windows 7 Home Premium, but the network is still XP pro and so IT used their volume license to format/reinstall the system. I spoke with my boss and he approved me to take the 7 Home Premium license key for my home Compaq laptop because by the time they upgrade to 7 they would use volume licensing for pro anyway, but then when I spoke with IT he said that the system didn't come with any media. Is there any way to get Windows 7 Home Premium Media, or to use the system recovery partition from the desktop to create media that I could then use to perform a fresh install of Windows 7 on my home computer? And is it even legal to do so?

Use OEM Key To Activate Win 7 Volume License Media
I just ordered a new Lenovo Thinkpad R400 with Vista Business preinstalled for personal use. I am still waiting for its delivery and will order the free Windows 7 Business upgrade from Lenovo asap.The company I work for has joined MS Enterprise Agreement and therefore I just got the volume license version of Windows 7 Business. Is it possible to install the Win7 business VL now, and then activate it once I got the Win7 OEM key from Lenovo?

Media Key Functionality Problem / Remote Keyboard Keys Not Working
I already had a topic about this, but since its locked, and some people still seem to have this problem, ill post a new one. No one seems to have found a solution, but i just got one, and now i wish to share it with everyone having the same problem. Hope this is the right place where to post it. The issue: Neither are Microsoft xp media center remote (model: 1039) or Logitech G15 keyboard media buttons working. The cause: Obviously the situation to be fixed here is very rare, since there is no reason at all that the Service "HID" would be disabled, but seems in some cases this might happen. This is only a rough guess, but it is probably something to do with some drivers or updates you or windows have/has installed. The solution: 1. Open start menu located on your taskbar. 2. Right-click "Computer" and open "Manage". 3. At the left, under "computer management", you find "Services and Applications". Open it and select "Services". 4. Search for a service named "HID (Human Interface Device)" (or something VERY similar). 5. Once found, check the status. If the value is not "Started", start it. 6. To make sure it will be on also in the future, check the Startup Type value. If not "Automatic", right click it, and select properties. 7. Under the tab "General", change the Startup type to Automatic. 8. Apply and close. Note! If everything is already as above, the problem might be caused by wrong or old drivers, but with the remote control, this shouldn't be the issue. Hope this helped. Format Removable USB Drive
I have a Western Digital USB drive attached to my Windows 7 Professional laptop. I frequently disconnect the drive whenever I move the laptop to a different location - at least once or twice a day. On some occasions, after reconnecting the drive, which is actually connected via a USB hub, I get a message saying that I have to format the drive before I can use it. I close out the message, and shortly thereafter, the drive is available for me to use. This is a drive that I use mainly for backing up files and system images. Obviously, the last thing that I want to do is to reformat it. I know better, but I can envision some less experienced user click on OK and losing all of their data for no good reason.

Cannot Eject Removable Usb Drive
Cannot eject removable usb drive, I am using Windows 7 RC x64. When I connect my Seagate FreeAgent Go usb drive (NTFS) and use it for some time, Windows doesn't allow me to eject it anymore. I get the following message: "Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it. Close any programs that might be using the device, and then try again later." This happens even if I all my (visible) programs are closed, even Explorer. If I try to find who is using drive E: with ProcessExplorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx), I get nothing. But if I use LockHunter (http://lockhunter.com/?ver=&vertype=pro&sm=main_window_64) the following handles appear: System  e:$Extend$RmMetadata$TxfLog$TxfLogContainer0000000000000000002  e:$Extend$RmMetadata$TxfLog$TxfLog.blf  e:$Extend$RmMetadata$TxfLog$TxfLogContainer0000000000000000001 I also noticed two diferences when I compare my FreeAgent to a regular Kingston DataTraveler flash drive (FAT32): 1) Only when using DataTraveler drive I can see an "Eject" option in Explorer's context menu. For FreeAgent I have to go to the notification tray usb icon. 2) When I run "fsutil fsinfo drivetype E:" I get "removable" for DataTraveler but "fixed"(!) for FreeAgent. I hope someone can help, I am tired to restart my computer everytime I have to remove my drive.

Filename Character Limit On Removable Drive
My removable NTFS formatted hard drive seems to have a limit of 128 characters for a file name, regardless of path length. The same limit does not apply to the local drives. Additionally, I am able to bypass this limitation through XP virtualization. Why would Windows 7 limit file name length on a remote drive lower than on the local drives, even those it doesn't own (my local D drive belongs to XP)

USB Hard Drives Mount As Non Removable
I've just installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (fresh install) and my external USB hard drives now mount as non-removable. Under Vista, I could right click and Eject them or use Safely remove hardware. Under Windows 7 they mount as non-removable and the option to eject is gone and if I try to safely remove the USB-IDE bridge device, I get an error that the drive is in use when it isn't.

Win 7 Does Not Recognize Removable Dvd Drive
I have a Thinkpad W500 laptop with a CD/DVD-R/RW multi drive in the UltraSlim-Bay. Windows 7 Pro 64-bit does not recognize it as a removable drive and does not provide a means to "safely remove" it. Previously, Vista Business SP1 64-bit ran on the same hardware and handled the same optical drive correctly. There was driver for "ez-eject" that was available from IBM/Lenovo for previous Microsoft OS. Is that what made the optical drive removable? If so, is there anything like that available for Windows 7 to correctly handle this drive as removable?

Private Data On Different Partitions
So many users use 2 Partitions, one for Windows and all installations and the other one for all personal data. That just makes any new installation so easy. Would be great, if you add a option to your install routine, so all private data get's connected right from the beginning to the second partition (or wherever the user needs it to be).Makes new installation so much easier!

Disk Management / Multiple Partitions On Removable Devices
Just ran in to an excruciatingly painful issue with W7 RC (build 7100). The Disk Management utility (via control panel>admin tools) gets confused with removable drives that have multiple partitions. The setup: W7 7100 16GB SD card - 3 partitions, 4gb ext3/1gb linux swap/10gb fat32 Partitioning and formatting was originally done with a linux system. I was looking to transfer some files from the W7 box on to the fat32 partition so I put the SD card in to the W7 box. Initially, W7 would not recognize the fat32 partition and silly me thought that perhaps I hadn't formatted it, so I loaded up the W7 disk manager, which correctly identified the 3 partitions on the card and their sizes, but reported all 3 partitions as unknown files system. I expected the ext3 and linux-swap partitions to show as unknown, but the fat32 showing as unknown rather empty or such seemed a bit odd. Guessing that perhaps the linux partitioning tool I used may not have created the fat32 file system correctly after all, I instructed W7 to format the 10gb partition as fat32 by right clicking the partition, selecting format, and telling it to use fat32 as the file system. After OKing the format, the disk management tool froze for a second as it has done in the past when initiating a format, and then the status of the 10gb partition changed to formatting. A few moments later, the status for the 10gb partition goes blank, the file system of the 4gb!partition changes to fat32 and its volume label was cleared. Right clicking on the 10gb partition and selecting info/properties produced an error message saying that the disk manager's information was not current and that I should try clicking the refresh button/restarting disk management/rebooting the pc. Trying all 3 of those steps just resulted in the same message coming up. When I put the SD card back in to the linux machine that had done the partitioning originally, it showed the card as having an empty 4gb fat32 partition, a 1gb linux swap and the 10gb fat32 partition that it had created initially. This has resulted in the complete loss of the ext3 filesystem that was in the first partition of the SD card. After realizing that my 3-4 hours of work on the ext3 partition were gone, I set out to see whether this issue was confined to SD cards, or would extend to anything that W7 identifies as a 'removable device' I had a smaller SD card and a USB stick floating around, both 4gb. Using the linux machine, I partitioned each in to 3 partitions, 1gb/1gb/2gb, and then attempted to format the 2gb partition on each as fat32 using W7. In both cases, W7 formatted the first 1gb partition, leaving the other two partitions untouched. Why is the W7 disk manager differentiating between HDDs and 'removable media' in its operation? Considering there is nothing at all to indicate that it exhibits this behavior, it is an issue that will cause heavy data loss to anyone using multiple partitions on a usb stick or sd card. Has anyone else experienced similar issues? or perhaps it might work for you?

Setting Up A Virtual Private Network
my girlfriends pc at her university blocks certain ports which are required by a website which she uses to watch tv online. Therefore as a work around, she bought a service which offered a VPN. This meant that she on her uni pc be connected to the uni internet, however then open a VPN connection which meant she would then be connected to this VPN and browse the internet through them whom do no block ports. My question is could someone please advise me on how to do this, I have WIndows 7 and she has XP Pro. I tried setting up my pc as a host, allocating her a username and password and allowing incoming connections etc. however upon trying to get hers to connect to me, it just timed out and could not connect! I would appreciate if someone could give me a step by step guide on how to set up my PC as the host and her PC as the client, in order for her to browse the internet using my internet, not her universities. I don't want remote desktop as dont want her having control and seing my desktop, just sharing my internet.

Network Sharing / Homegroup On Private LAN
I have searched but not found much with what I want to set up. I currently have a wireless connection to the internet for my PC and Laptop. What I would like to do is setup a private LAN with an old router to use but be able to keep the desktop connected to both WiFi and this LAN. The only way I have managed to do so so far is by manually setting the IP address for the LAN (disable DHCP, change IP address etc) and assigning the LAN IP address manually to my desktop/laptop, leaving the gateway fields blank. I have noticed that doing this makes my network "Unknown" to Windows 7, which then forces it into Public mode, and disables Homegroup. Is there a way for me to accomplish what I want? Is pretty much how I want it to work. The desktop has two NICs, the laptop does not, so I realize the laptop would be a one-or-the-other scenario.

How To Make A Private Unidentified Network Identifiable?
Windows 7 seems to be unable to effectively identify my VPN connection. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. I've installed OpenVPN 2.1RC20 (the latest release of OpenVPN). OpenVPN creates a virtual network connection using the "TAP-Win32 Adapter V9". When I connect to the VPN, I am not prompted to identify the network. This is apparently due to the fact that the network to which I'm connecting does not supply a default gateway. That is, I'm connecting to a private network and I only need access to the private nodes on the network. Read more at forums...

Setting Up A Home Media Network Using Media Center And Media Extenders
I am trying to setup a media network for my new home that's being built. What I want to accomplish is a network that can feed my 5 TVs live feeds or be able to record up to 4 or so TV shows at once. But I wanted it all to come from one centeralized location. I know that I can do this with Windows Home Server and Windows 7 Media Center and then I know that I need a media extender for each TV. Other than that what else do I need? Can I just have one cable box plugged into the Server and have that feed all the TVs or do I need one cable box for each TV and do I need a Tuner Card in the Server for each TV? How many TV Cards can Windows 7 support at one time? How many Media Extenders can support one TV Card? I want to store my movies and music and pictures in this same server that I'm using for the live TV and DVR so what specs on the server do you recommend?
