The security software on the laptop will not work because Windows 7 SP1 has not been installed on the laptop. I can't seem to download SP1 from Microsoft. The local office of Geek Squad diagnosed the problem being that there is a problem with Windows 7 and it will need to be re-installed. I would like to see if forum members agree or have a different diagnosis. Its going to take me quite a while to re-install windows 7 and I would like to get a second opinion before I devote that sort of time.

I was thinking of buying windows 7 and a new HDD for myself for xmas and I wanted to install 7 on the new HDD. I currently have XP installed on my HDD at home and I was wondering if it were possible to install 7 on the new hard drive I buy and still have access to the files and programs on the other drive? Will the other programs be able to run from another hard drive or will they NEED to be installed on the new one?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have formatted and copied windows 7 to my 4GB USB key and I have installed a new HDD into my Dell Optiplex 745. When I boot up the computer I am notified with:PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cablePXE-M0F: Existing Broadcom PXE ROMI have searched and found out that this can be caused by a bad hdd but this can't be the case seeing that I literally opened it new from it's packaging and instantly installed it. Also I heard that in order to install via USB you need to place USB to #1 in boot sequence. I have tried this but when I do this all I get is a screen with a flashing underscore at the top of the screen and I can't do anything. So I changed my boot sequence back to the way it was:1. Onboard or USB Floppy Drive (not present)2. Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive3. Onboard SATA Hard Drive4. Onboard Network Controller5. USB DeviceI have no backup disk and I have no access to a Windows 7 DVD, all I have is it on USB.

I grabbed a HDD out from another computer that is running on XP and plugged into my new PC. It loads to the WinXP screen, then a quick blue screen of death and resets. New PC Specs are as follows:

AMD Phenom 2 x4 Quad Core

View 2 Replies View Relatedrecently had to re-install Win7 on my 2009 Acer Aspire 5738Z. The laptop originally came with Vista. I had the hard drive partitioned in half. D: is running Vista. I didn't want to nuke it in case of an emergency. That was a good call because Win7 went bad. C: now runs fresh install of Win 7 64x Pro. I bring up the fact about Vista so you know this was not a native Win7 machine. After the OS re-install & a million window updates & reboots later I was left with some questions.-I have just some basic programs installed so far. My work Outlook (several gigs), office 2010, firefox, chrome, skype, teamviewer, iTunes (fresh install no music). I looked in C: in Computers & I'm using 59G of a 100 G HDD! Does that sound normal? I think I saw right after the Win7 install & all updates it was just over 40G used! Should Win7 & all needed updates amount to 40-50+ G of space? If not what have I done wrong?
-So far the system seems to be running fine. I'm just not sure if i have all the needed drivers for my laptop. I've noticed when I use the volume buttons no icon displays on the screen. It always showed up in Vista & the old Win7. That make me think I might be missing some drivers after the re-install. How can I find out if I have all the needed & up to date drivers?
i have two hard drive 320gb and 500gb and currently my operating system(windows 7 x64) is installed on the 320gb.i have no dvd or usb and i need to make a clean windows 7 install on the 500g but the problem is if i launch the windows 7 setup using virtual drive software on the 320gb and select to install windows 7 on the 500gb,if i remove my 320gb the boot menu is gone and wont detect my 500gb and it seems like the boot stuff is on the 320gb i want to be able to run the windows 7 setup on the 500gb hard drive independently without the 320gb because i need to give that hard drive to someone.i tried this method but it wont detect my 500gb Install Windows 7 Or Windows 8 From USB Drive/Pen Drive.i made 3 partitions on my 500gb (50gb, 50gb and 400gb) and i want to install windows 7 on 50gb partition.i have no files on my 500gb

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've given in and bought a 80GB SSD. At the moment I have a 1TB HDD in 3 partitions.
52.6GB 'C' 0 6.75GB free
727GB 'D'
151GB 'E'
D and E have plenty of space on them.
To install windows on the new SSD lets call it 'F'.
I need to unplug the 1TB HDD, plug in the SSD and load from CD (I know how to install windows) Just install it, won't bother with partitions on it. I will now plug in the 1TB. Once installed I have to do all the driver updates (I'm sure I'll miss a few out somehow). Then programs etc and good to go.
What can I do with the 'C' drive on the 1TB? Should I just delete the partition? I only use up 45.85GB so far on my C drive, so should have 34GB to play around with.. maybe put like WoW on there which is 23GB I think. Then leave the rest free?

View 3 Replies View RelatedA couple of years ago I got a laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled, now I am looking for a new laptop it since windows 8 just came out many of the new laptops are lacking it. So I was wondering if there was away to get a genuine copy of Windows 7 onto a brand new laptop, without having to buy another copy of it from Amazon or somewhere. If I wiped the drive in the old laptop and then either clean install Windows 7 on the new laptop or use windows system image to transfer it to the new one.Would either of these methods leave me with a genuine copy of 7? Or of I do get a new laptop with Windows 8 am I stuck with it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently ordered a new PC - it doesn't come with an O/S so I'm going with Windows 7 Home Premium (I'm comfortable with it and I'm very unsure about Windows 8). Have a couple of questions I'd be grateful for assistance with:
1. I've seen Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows Home Premium Family Pack advertised. Are they the same and if not what's the difference?
2. I know my current system is 64 bit and aware that there's a 32 bit. What factor determines which one you use (i.e. do I choose or is this chosen my the set-up of the PC)?
My Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop's hard drive recently crashed. I have ordered a new 320GM hard drive and installed it, and I am trying to get Windows 7 Ultimate installed. After the initial installation, I saw that the video card was not getting the proper driver, so I downloaded what seemed to be the right one, and the problem that I am having is this: After Windows finishes installing and I log in for the first time, any updates or changes I make cause the "Startup Repair" Window appears, saying it will try to fix problems. It then either says the problems are fixed or can't be fixed, tells me to click "Finish" to shut down the computer, and no matter if the problem was fixed or not, the "Startup Repair" comes up automatically again. It i like I am in an endless loop. Also, it seems for some reason that Windows was installed in the D: partition, rather than on C: drive, even though I told the software to install it in the one large partition that was visible when installation began. The bottom line is, I seem to get Windows 7 installed fine, but as soon as I run Windows Update or try to install updated drivers, it ends up in this "Startup Repair" loop.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just made my first ever build and it went off without a hitch. I decided to go with a Crucial M4 64GB SSD for the Windows 7 Pro OS, MS Office, and the Adobe CS5 suite; and a 1TB WD caviar black drive for the vast majority of other program files, user files, and the like.I installed Windows 7 Professional x64 on the SSD. Everything was fine. Now I want to make it so pretty much EVERYTHING besides the OS is on the second, mechanical HDD and I can't figure out how. I've googled and googled and I can't get it. I want all user files (My Documents, the Desktop, everything) to be on the mechanical HDD too.I found one post that directed me to go into RegEdit and edit the registry files so the default Program files location was the other drive but that resulted in the computer no longer working so now I had to format and re-install the OS on the SSD.
