its because 7 is 3gb and my USB is 16GB, so its kinda wasted.

Install Windows 7 ON (not FROM) A USB Key
I want to install Windows 7 ON (not FROM) a USB key (instead of disk) and run from it.

But without VirtualBox or VM Player or something. Directly to the USB key.

Guide Use A USB Key To Install Win 7
Putting the Windows 7 installation on a USB thumb drive has a few advantages—a small USB key is much more convenient for carrying around than a DVD, the OS will actually install much faster, and you can use a USB key to install Windows 7 on systems that do not have a DVD drive, such as a netbook. In fact, you can even install Windows 7 on netbooks that have fairly modest hardware.

Here’s a quick look at the process:

First, you’ll need the DiskPart utility on the system you will use to prep the thumb drive. This is a free disk partitioning utility that is likely already installed on your Windows system. If not, you can download DiskPart here Launch the DiskPart utility by typing diskpart at the Start Menu.

Then run the list disk command to check the status of your drive. Now run select disk 1 where the "1" is actually the corresponding number of your USB drive. Run clean. Once the thumb drive is clean, you can run create partition primary.

Now make the partition active by entering active Then you need to set up the file system as Fat32 by running format fs=fat32 quick (quick, of course, specifies that you want to perform a quick format to speed up the process).

Entering the assign command gives the USB drive a drive letter, making it easy to access from Windows Explorer Then you can copy everything from the Windows 7 installation DVD onto the USB key (a simple drag and drop will do).

Now you can insert the thumb drive into the system you want to install Windows 7 onto and boot the system. The installation will now proceed as usual—but faster.

New Install - Forgot Key - In _old Folder From Previous Install?
my Windows 7 professional install seemed kind of lame after some years so I decided to install a new and clean one. I noted down the product-ID from my computers properties because I thought that was the key (right next to it it says change key, so I thought that must be the key). After the new install I realied that it is not equivalent to the key as the ID has less letters. Is there a chance to get the key from the "old" folder that is generated if you install a new windows over an old one?Or is there a chance to get to the key from the product ID? because I have no clue where I put the key..

Bitlocker With Usb Key For Encryption
I bought Windows XP Ultimate and setup my computer with Bitlocker, using a USB key for the encryption key. After setting everything up and confirming it all works, I thought I would make a copy of this USB key. When I look at the USB stick using Windows Explorer or via a Dir command through a DOS prompt, I don't see any files on the USB stick. Is this normal? Is there no way to make a copy of the stick, I would have thought I would have seen files on it.

Making And Using A Bootable USB Key?
I'm using an HP laptop and made a bootable flash key with the Microsoft utility (which I downloaded from Microsoft) to make a Windows 7 installation. I(supposedly) changed the boot order in the bIOS to look first at the key. Didn't work - booted directly into Windows 7 (seemingly bypassed the bootable key)1. How do I tell if the USB key is bootable?2. What could have prevented my BIOS from remembering my new boot order?3. What might be the reason(s) why my laptop won't boot from the USB key?HP Pavilion dv5t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PCSerial Number: CNF84816H3 Product Number: kq573av

Press Any Key To Boot From USB
So I built a new system, and created a bootable USB with Win7 on it, I've tested it on my previous comp to make sure it is bootable.I plug it into my USB slot (tried both USB 2 and 3 slots) and set the bios (F15) to boot from what it reads as a Generic Storage Device 0204.I reboot and then see "Press any key to boot from USB..." <-- 3 dots which immediately (<1sec) changes to 4 dots. And then the system hangs. Num and CAPS are both lit up, and cannot be turned off. Nothing else does anything. While I'm in the BIOS, the keyboard functions just fine. It's a USB keyboard plugged into a USB 2.0 slot (but also didnt work when plugged into a USB 3)

USB Key Bootable But Not Showing In Windows 7 Or Ubuntu
I created a bootable key of Backtrack 5 using YUMI from Pendrivelinux. Choosing USB as first boot device allows me to access the key and choose to boot BT5. It doesn't seem to boot up properly but at least I can access the drive; so I should be able to format it, right? On booting to both/ either Win7 or Ubuntu 11.04, the drive isn't mounted. Under Win7, it's available only under Device Manager as an Unknown Device and comes complete with exclamation mark! It also seems to be listed under USB Controllers as a USB Mass Storage Device (properties say Device working properly!). There is also no listing of the drive under the Disk Management section of Administrative Tools/Computer Management. I have also tried Spotmau but the drive still doesn't show up. Any ideas of how to format the key? There is no data worth saving on it, as it can easily be rebuilt, but it's a handy 4Gb Kingston Datatraveller 102 stick.

64 GB USB Key Occasionally Needs Drive Letter Assigned?
I have 4 USB memory sticks I use on a regular basis, a 4, a 16, a 32 and a 64 GB.This problem only happens with the 64 GB stick, and only on one of my several computers. Most of the time when I insert it, windows does not automatically assign it a drive letter. I have to into the computer management --> Disk management section and manually assign it a drive letter. Occasionally however when it is inserted, windows assigns it a drive letter just fine. This only happens on one of my laptops. It works fine of all of my other computers and every other computer I have stuck it in

WMP Copies CDs But Can't Play Them On USB Key?
Is driving me mad, I'm running a Windows 7, 32 bit laptop and have been ripping CDs to copy onto my USB drive to play in the car, I got about 50 CDs copied tonight and transfered to the USB, I tried it in the car and it was fine, had my tea and copied the rest, tried it in the car and only the ones I'd copied before tea will play, plugged the USB back into the laptop and tried to get it to play using Windows Media Player, the message I'm getting on screen shows this-:"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

USB 3.0 External HDD Failed Windows 7 Driver Install On USB 3.0 Port?
Just got a new Asus Zenbook UX31E and am having a certain problem where if I plug my external drive (Samsung S2 1TB, USB 3.0, 2.5") into the 3.0 port windows tries to install a driver for the new device but fails. Now the drive powers on when connected but wont load up as an accessible drive and is not found is disc management.I've tried the HDD successfully in another laptop with USB 3.0 and it works fine on my Zenbook's USB 2.0 port so I'm guessing there's no problem with the HDD itself. Also I have tried a small flash drive in the Zenbook's 3.0 port which worked fine.I have tried updating the USB 3.0 driver to the latest version via Asus' driver database but have got the same result.I would of thought with such a prestigious laptop someone else would of run across this problem but all my googling has turned up ziltch.

Upgrade Install With No Key
I have Vista Home premium 64 OEM pre-installed.

I have Windows 7 Home 64 UPGRADE RETAIL pre-ordered

I have an ISO of Windows 7 Home 64 Retail (I'm guessing it's the full version? I don't even know if there is a difference in the media itself or is it just the key that is different)

Now my question is:

Can I upgrade from Vista to 7 with my Windows 7 Home retail iso and NOT put in a key and when i get my upgrade cd key just put in that cd-key and activate windows?

Or would i have to do an upgrade install on top of Windows 7? (can you even do that?) and during that upgrade put my key and activate it.

Or would i have to reload Vista and then upgrade to 7 again?

How To Install 7 From Release Candidate Key
I have a friend who who bought Windows 7 (I think Professional) x64 from school via the Microsoft Academic Alliance when it was Release Candidate 2. The issue we are running into is re-installing it. We don't have the original CD, but we do have the key. I have a CD full of 7 OEM installs, but I can't find one that will accept this key. I have the PC installed to OEMALL 7 Pro currently hoping that I could then change the key, but it won't accept it, it says the key is not valid.Anyone have an idea how to re install this version of 7?

Same Key Used To Activate 32 Bit Install?
What I want to do is convert a 32 bit Win Ult to 64 bit, transfer it to a new hard drive then install in a new build. It this possible using the same key used to activate the 32 bit install? I have Windows install DVDs for both which are Upgrade versions.I'm also confused on the order to do things. Convert first, if possible, then clone the drive. Clone the current drive, do the build then convert. Also I understand maybe sysprep would be needed too.I will have a new motherboard soon (hopefully) so I want to use my old one and CPU, graphics, and RAM to make a new PC for my wife. The only component that will be re-used is the DVD-RW and I may add a 2nd one which I don't need.

Using Upgrade Key On An Retail Install
I have purchased 2 retail copies of Windows 7 Pro for 29.99 with my student discount. If you have questions as to how I achieve this go to this thread

Full Retail Version of Pro For Students only 29.99

I now have another computer that I want to put Windows 7 pro on. I am thinking about purchasing an upgrade key and just using the retail version to install so I don't have to reinstall Vista in order to do the upgrade.

Anyways, do you think I could purchase an upgrade key, install with my retail disk without filling out the product key and then activate with the upgrade key?
