I am upgrading my OS from XP to Windows 7, but I am having problems cleaning my hard drive so I have 16GB of free space. My D drive is not NFTS formatted so I can not install on it. How can I safely wipe the C drive so I can complete my upgrade.
I have an HP desktop running windows vista that will soon be passed on to me. If I buy an "Upgrade" version of windows 7, is there a way to completely and totally wipe out the hard drive and upgrade, or would I have to buy the more expensive "full install" version of 7?
I have a Dell XPS 13 that came with Vista home. I later upgraded to Windows 7 home. The computer began to have intermittent lock up and video failures so I decided to wipe the drive and do a clean install of Windows 7. Now I can't activate windows 7. Since I upgraded this legitimently I should be able to reactivate my system.
I have a co-worker that brought in his Acer notebook. It is running Windows 7 loads but only will show the background. Nothing else will show. When trying to do a repair it locks up the repair every time. Does the same thing if I try to install Windows again.
If you overwrite a file and disable windows shadow copy (system restore) service, is there anyway to recover the overwrited files? I've heard of people recovering data from wiped hard drive disks. I'm need to know because I accidentally erased a text file that had all of my passwords stored on it...
i have a lg xnote that i got given to me because they didnt know what to do with it. when i turn it on it comes up as "harddisk security" and "primary master" and asks for a password that i dont have. i just want to wipe it or something?
I am trying to help a friend out with his Sony Vaio E Series Laptop. The computer had crashed and he tried to do a clean install of windows but it failed and nothing would respond. Even when you tired to do a clean install of windows again it just went to the light blue windows screen with the bird and nothing happened. So I used Dban to Wipe the hard drive clean and start over from scratch. After I wiped it I tried to reinstall windows and it says there are no signed device drivers found. So I checked the bios and it's not even registering the hard drive. I have been searching the boards everywhere to find a solution to this. The Bios does not allow for much change so I can not make sure it is set to a SATA connection and I have tried turning off the signed device option when starting up. Nothing is working.
I would like to completely wipe the hard drive of my Lenovo Thinkpad as the Best Buy geek squad really messed things up. I need to back up all of my data first and was wondering if there was any free options online? I have a 4GB jump drive I can use as well.As for wiping the laptops hard drive, what is the best way? Keep in mind that I want to have it completely restored to factory state. I don't want to do a simple reformat through a Windows 7 install
I use my 4gb USB2.0 flash drive not only in order to save valubale documents, but also for portable programs. Since I got summer job in which my work-computers is changed frequently, I started using portable programs from my usb flash drive. Sometimes my work-pc's do freeze and I am unable to remove USB drive safely, so I corrupt my portable applications very fast.Maybe you know any tricks and tips on how to use flash drive as safely as you can in order to lose that risk of data corruption?I use NTFS file system, would FAT32 or FAT format be any safer in my case?
I recently purchased a Dell Xps 1340 laptop that came with windows 7 32 bit professional. After a few months, I needed to wipe the hard disk, and so I did. Before I did, I extracted my product key with a program that I downloaded off the internet. I got the following information:
Windows 7 Professional Product Part No.: X15-37377 Installed from 'OEM' media. Product ID: ******* match to CD Key data CD Key: ********* Computer Name: ***-PC Registered Owner: *** Registered Organization:
Anyway, I had a RETAIL windows 7 professional disc, and I installed this onto my dell laptop. However, it keeps telling me that my product key is wrong when I try to activate. I have tried both 32bit and 64bit? is it because I'm using a RETAIL windows 7 disc? If I try a dell oem disc, will that work with my product key?
i have just upgraded my pc with new cpu amd 8350, graphics card asus 7970 and sabertooth 990fx motherboard and corsair ssd 480gb drive.i did not install theses items and i have just got it all back. i noticed that in the safely remove hardware and eject media icon is showing and when i click to see what it was its show as my ssd drive which is my os drive.
Equipment: Acer Aspire 5535 Laptop Originally running Vista Home Premium - no problem. I have updated to W7 and now on W7 Ultimate SP1 32 bit I can slot an DS card into the card reader and copy to/from with Explorer.
I then eject the device using Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon in the rhs of the Task Bar.
I remove the card and then any other card slotted in is not recognised - including the original one. It does not appear in the Explorer window and is not accessible.
If I look on Device Manager, under Universal Bus Controllers, the eigth one down is USB Mass Storage Device and is showing an ! in yellow triangle. Right click on this brings up properties which tells me:
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)
To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again." Well, if course I did remove the card but it don't see that
If I reboot the LT this is cleared. If I watch Device manager whilst ejecting the card, nothing happens till I actually, physically take out the card when it updates the window to show the fault triangle. I have checked for latest driver and am told it has the latest one. Other USB ports work OK.
I have a new PC running W7 64bit.When I click the safely remove hardware button to remove a USB flashdrive, listed as well is the option to remove my hard drive. Is this normal? The shop that built the PC for me says it is because my hard drive is SATA, but it is still a bit disconcerting.
I have a Samsung QX410 with Windows 7, 64 bit. When i bought it, i had made a set of 4 recovery disks (i dont really know how they work, or what they do). A few days back my laptop slid and fell down, and since then i have had this trouble. My windows is not loading up.....it takes me to a black screen.
how i recover the windows using those CDs? And also if i use them, does that save my data on D drive or not? I dont really have any data that i want to save on my C drive. What other options do i have to save my data ?
I have Windows installed on an SSD drive. I want to reroute all the users folder to another drive (D:). Is this possible? if so how? What about changing the specified installation folder for program files and program files (x86) to point to the D: drive also? How can I do this safely and making sure that it will not make Windows go a bit dodgy and still have Windows Updates successfully download and install?
Lately i got myself a new computer. I use the wrong OS to install and installed Window XP and Got a BlueScreen mid way. Later i realize there was a Disc containing Windows 7. when i Put the CD in it does nothing. My Pc load all the way up to a black screen with a blinking underscore and stay there. I cant type and can only restart the PC.

hey someone put a password on my bios a while ago and I don't know what it is, I've full powered it down, taken out battery for 1min+, used the CMOS jumpers but it's still on there. How can it be this persistent?
About three months ago I built a new PC but with trying to keep in budget I opted to use my dads windows 7 CD and bought a code online. Recentley though it failed and after googling I found that this was probably a trial version. I have now bought a retail copy and thought I would get an SSD as I did want to get one origanlly but again couldnt get it into my budget.Basically I have alot of stuff I dont want to keep on there ( I will transfer all of my music, steam games etc onto an external hdd) so would like to do a fresh install of windows onto the SSD and completley wipe the HDD so it can just be used for storage.
I had encountered problems with my laptop and wanted to start a fresh so I tried to install windows seven again and got all the way through the installation up until the completing installation phase then after about fourty minutesi received an error of what I beleive said windows has encountered a problem restart the computer and restart the installation and when i tried to boot I got an error after the setup is starting services screen that says the computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error windows installation cannot proceed, and when I restart I get stuck in this loop, I have my bios set to boot from cd drive but if I do not press any buttons it shows four different windows 7 listed, I am completely stuck in what to do, i have a dell Inspiron N5030.
I want to wipe my hard drive becuase over a couple of years it has become a lot slower and i want to try wiping it before i start upgrading it. How can i compeletely wipe a disk but and then re-install windows on it without having to buy a new one. i don't have the original windows disk on it. Do i use the recovery disk, or do i only wipe the non-os partition.
Model: Toshiba Satellite P755-S5198 . I might get chewed for this but, I am tried of all the 'fluff' that comes with my Toshiba so I am sure I am dooming my self here.Ive had this Toshiba for a good two years now and it has more than paid for its investment for what Ive put it through, and I want to squeeze more out of it, but the fluff is the cause of so much stress for me. Now I know to be in a Administrator account to uninstall stuff, yada yada. But I know that doesn't get rid of it though cause of the Recovery partition. After alot of deciding I decide to put my Hirens to personal use and make all things on my Hard Drive Zeros!!! Well will soon after I get info I need.I will be using double driver to back up all this then restore it once I wipe the hard drive if that is feasible.ANyone who has a p755-S5198 know what key drivers are needed for basic operability?I am assuming the NIC, the Realtek LAN/Enet port controller, the GPU and Integrated Graphics driver, and the HM65 Chipset controller? Oh and Generic USB for mouse use.The rest I will use other tools in the Hirens to get Driver info and stuff..
1. Will I need to Flash the Bios if I completely wipe the harddrrive, recovery partition and all? Or will my Bios remain the same even if I wipe the HD?
2. Is there a way to make a recovery Partition on the HDD after installing windows and getting the computer perfectly set up like you want ((Aka Programs installed, modifications made and what not).? Assuming it will use the Windows Recovery stuffs? I dont want to just make a Partition on the Hardrive, I want it to be a actual partition that is strictly for recovery purposes, since I do a Factory restore 1 time every month, the principle is the same for making a New recovery partition if I wipe the computer.
I've been attempting a dual boot Vista 64 with Windows 7 on a 30GB partition on my c: drive.
This has not been successful as I can't get online, 7 can't see my router.
See dual boot thread in this forum if you're interested.
Anyway, in frustration I just tried a reinstall/ recovery with my original iso disk and I think I've bollixed the whole thing.
I realized what I was doing, another install, and ejected the disk in a panic and now find I have to 7 installs on that partition neither of which is booting properly.
So can I somehow wipe this partition and start afresh?
Also I'm thinking that my original download/iso disk might have been corrupt or something and that could be what's caused me these problems. I could download another one and burn a fresh disk.
Could I just format the drive or is there another way required.
I've heard that diskpart / clean all is very thorough, but I don't know how to do this on my netbook since the main drive of the computer in use can't be the one selected for clean all. Is there another way to do this, or an alternative that would be just as thorough? Any suggestions / instructions would be much appreciated. I have Windows 7 starter (32 bit).
