How Can I Place New Programs On The Start Bar ?

I'm trying to figure this out. I use programs that are not on my local disc, but on a network, on windows servers. I created a shortcut and placed it on my desktop, but now I wan't to have those next to the start button.

I am unable to drag them to there, because a red symbol shows up that contains a round and a line through it. When I open the program i normally see "Pin to start menu", but not with this. It only gives me the option to close it.

Can't Search Programs In The Start Bar
I recently installed windows 7, and it generally runs great, but...

apparently there is supposed to be a little search bar in the start menu so when you click start you can just start typing to search for a program...

but mine doesn't seem to exist. Where can I enable it?

All Programs Empty After In-place Upgrade From Vista
As the title says the "All programs" menu in start menu is empty after upgrading from Vista SP2 beta to Windows 7 RC. I did some googling and other people seemed to have the same problem. Creating a new account won't fix the problem as the problem persists in every new account.

Maybe it has got something to do with permissions? I think this is a major issue if other people can reproduce it as Vista -> Win7 upgrade path will be used extensively after Windows 7 has been released.

Black Screen - No Start Bar - No Icons
First I have read someone comments about issues regarding missing Start Bar issue however this one seems to be a little more challenging. I have been using Window 7 RC for approximately 6 weeks and everything was working (generally speaking very good). However, yesterday upon power-up I log on as usually and after the login I have a black screen, period.

No Start Bar, No desktop icons, No Sidebar, just a black screen. Mouse right click does nothing, Ctrl Alt and Delete brings up Task Manager and from there I can run all programs without problems. This issue occur both in the Admin Account and the Guest Account. I can open the sidebar and then see the Icons however on a re-start I'm back to the black screen same issues.

I have done another install of Windows 7 RC yesterday and again the same issues occur. I have completely Virus checked and Malware checking the machine prior to yesterday's install and found nothing abnormal.

Whereas I have two montiors I 've checked out whether it maybe defaulted to the 2nd - Not - Re installed the Windows Graphic Drivers as well. I also tried system Restore before I re-installed windows 7 same result with the black screen.

Doubly Pinned Program On Start Bar - Bug
How to produce :

Drag notepad from the startmenu to the startbar to pin it to it.

Now doubleclick on a .txt file to open notepad.

Do you now have 2x notepad on the startbar like me or does it combine into one ??

I have  the option always combine, hide labels selected in the startbar preferences
which should prevent this from happening.

Task Bar On Top, Start Menu Is Always Full Screen Height
I prefer my Task Bar across the top of the screen, rather than at the bottom. I also like it to autohide. This is my preference.

This seems to work okay but for one thing. When I click the Start button the start menu expands to the full height of the screen, making the thing I'm most likely to want to click on ("All Programs") as far away from my mouse as is possible!

I've been told by various fanboys not to crave the Classic start menu any more, as clearly I am a dinosaur for wanting that. Fair enough, I'm trying to use what's given to me by Windows 7.

Is there a setting or trick that will allow my Start menu to be only as high as it needs to be? Even if it's only half the height of the screen that will be a relief.

And don't say I should move my Task Bar to the bottom, that's not gonna happen.

Live Dual Programs On Task Bar
I do not like having my programs "group" themselves in the taskbar as I do not run 100 things at once. Since I turned off this option I now have (2) applications running when running Live Messenger.

As seen in the picture the (2) programs are "linked" as one when you rollover and use AeroPeek.  It appears the left side program is actually a Windows Live application of sorts...and the right side window is of course Live Messenger.

I found this annoying personally and am wondering if

A) Is it possible to have this go away via an option somewhere

if not....

B) Is this a final design decision by MS relating to Windows 7?

I think the concept of the windows live application being there for quick access to all things Passport is a good concept I just don't know/want that program cluttering my taskbar.

Edit:

I've found via another post running Messenger in compatility mode with older windows (Vista SP2) fixes the double programs issue..but still am curious is this dual program is a design choice or bug.

Start-Up Programs Question
Regarding the Start-Up menu, the list of programs and items that start when the PC is turned on:

a. If there are two Users, is the list different depending upon which User logs on ?

b. IF there is a separate list for each user, and then the two Users just

do "Switch Users" during the day, do these start up items then change, or once going, they continue irrespective of the User ?

e.g., each user would be operating on "his side" of the PC as expected, but the start up programs for the other user would (also) be active. True ?

Start Menu Programs
When I click on my start menu I am unable to see my installed programs. I can see "all programs" but apart from a few that have been pinned to the start menu, I can not see any other programs. Ithink it has become corrupted or something like that.

The only way I can identify my installed programs is by going 'program files'.

Start Menu's All Programs
I've installed Windows 7 on my laptop and want to customize the Start Menu's All Programs window. I normally consolidate like programs/folders into one common folder to minimize the number of items on the All Program window (i.e. all Microsoft related items in one folder called something like Microsoft Programs). I can't seem to figure out how to do that in Windows 7.

Deleted Programs From Start Menu
Maybe a week or two ago I was cleaning a junk from a system with revo uninstaller and have checked few more options then they are checked by default, and I erased some of the apps from start menu. That were apps which are in Accessories and System tools folders, and all Administrative tools folder.

After that I tried to approac them through Administrative tols in Control panel, but I was getting a message that a shortcut refers to a location which is unavailable, and that they are maybe moved to some other place on HD.Since I knew what have I done, and it was 3:00 AM,I decided to do a System restore, but some other day when I won't be sleepy.

Tomorrow and day after tomorrow I was kind a busy, and forgot to do a System Restore, but I was downloading some games and I was running out of a place on that partition.I was maybe a few hundreds megabytes short, and decided to delete all system restore points and turn off system protection,so I can get some extra place which was earlier dedicated to System restore.Off course,in that moment I forgot about the programs I deleted few days before but I remembered them in the same moment I turn off System protection and when restore points were gone, but a second or two too late.

So,my question is:

Is there any way so I can get back System tools and Administrative tools back?

Of course there is because I see some of them in System32 folder and in Windows folder(exe files) or maybe they are all there but I can't tell which one was where, and I don't know how I can get them back in Start menu, and reassociate Administrative tools with Control panel shortcut.

And of course,I don't have an image of a system.

I hope that you undersand what I was trying to tell.

Empty All Programs Start Menu
Since a few days, my "Start" menu, when I select "All programs", is completely empty. Everything looks and works perfectly okay until I go to "Start" / "All programs", then I get just an empty frame of the right size.

Szenario: Windows 7 RC x64, 8GB RAM, so resources shoudn't be an issue.

Certain Programs Dont Start Up Automatically
I have a couple of programs that I would like to automatically startup when Windows 7 starts up.

1. Fraps
2. Steam
3. Speedfan

For some reason they wont startup automatically when Win7 starts up. I have selected the option within each program for it to start when windows starts, where this option is available, or creating a shortcut and adding it to the startup menu, but nothing works.

Any ideas?

All Programs List In Start Menu
Many aspects of the Windows GUI have been reworked in Win7. I like most of what I see. The Control Panel, the Network Center, the Security Center, the Action Center (? - in Win 7?) all use bigger icons, more space around items, etc to make that information easier to read and understand and locate.

One place that remains mostly untouched for a long time is the "All Programs" list.

On a PC with alot of apps (which means any PC bought from a retailer or that has been around for a while), the All Programs list is difficult to parse/read.

I think this area needs some updating/refreshing. Maybe after clicking "All Programs" that list could expand/magnify or zoom in.

Maybe just redo the way the programs are listed - more whitespace, bullet-points, bigger font, to make that list more easily readable and comprehended.
