HP DV5-1002US Performance

Nework connectivity is frequently questionable with frequent disconnects.

Tonight I got a BSOD....something I haven't seen since my Windows XP days years ago.

In the past 5 days of execution I also had a critical Kernel exception.

Waiting for the next set of patches...but I may have to uninstall Windows 7 and move to WIndows XP if this does not resolve soon.

I need a stable system and Windows 7 is less stable on this system then Vista has been.

HP Pavilion Dv5-1004nr
All but 1 drivers were installed for the HP Pavilion dv5-1004nr.

The only driver that was missing was the ENE CIR infra-red received. Since it is a Microsoft e-home InfraRed received I think that the driver should be included by default. However, I managed to make it work by installing the Vista driver available.

Install On HP DV5 1251nr
I've got a HP DV5 1251 nr laptop. Came with Vista. Has a D:Recovery partition.

I did the upgrade install last Friday. Took 3.5 hours. Went smooth.

But now I want to do the clean install. I have the Family Home Premium version of 7.

My question is; will I be able to pass the compliance check now that I have Win 7 and am basically reinstalling 7.

Also, what do I do with my Vista Recovery Partition? Leave it alone? Is the recovery partition involved with the compliance check? I do have a 3DVD set of downloaded HP Recovery discs as well.

Also if anyone knows about the SwSetup Directory that has all the HP Software - should I use that or just look for all the HP Win 7 components that apply.

HP DV5 Laptop - Driver Issues
Windows 7 installed without a hitch. After installation of Windows Vista 32-bit drivers it functions perfectly. It appears to be a very peppy system with really neat improvements. Windows One Care live won't install because it does not view Windows 7 as a 'verifiable Microsoft Windows' Operating system.

I have been a part of the Windows Feedback Panel for at least 4 maybe 5 years. When Vista was in Beta testing I was chosen by Microsoft to be part of that group. Unfortunately in my view I was testing Vista on a Machine that ran Windows XP very well but was not capable of Hardware rigors of running Windows Vista.

I have tried for about the last six months to become part of the Beta testing for Windows 7, especially because I think I might have a better idea of what to do.

HP Pavillion Dv5 1388 N Audio Problem
I purchased an HP Pavillion dv-5 1388n Entertainment Notebook PC. It came with Vista Home, and was deemed compatible for the Windows 7 upgrade, to Home Premium. I received the upgrade disc and installed it this past weekend. The install went smoothly with no errors during the 2+ hour process. All apps worked fine, but I discovered that I can hear no system sounds or play any audio via I-Tunes or Windows Media Player. I have checked the sound properties and all is fine. There are no updates needed for anything and I have tried updating my drivers. I even uninstalled the drivers and restarted the laptop to allow the laptop to find the correct drivers.

When I try to play any audio file I get an error "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file". I tried to update the media and have even tried to download VLC Media Player with no success.

Performance Monitor
I was on a conference call this morning to troubleshoot some performance issues, in which I am responsible for the desktop systems. I tried using the Windows 7 performance monitoring application to hook up to a few performance counters on the remote system(s), which are running Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows XP SP2, and was unable to view performance counter data from them.

I was able to use the Windows XP performance monitor to connect to the same remote systems.

Any ideas on why I couldn't make this work from Windows 7?

Network Performance
This may be more of a cosmetic flaw, but my network doesn't seem to have the same connectivity.  When I had XP on the computer, same exact conditions, it said I had 4 or 5 out of 5 bars of connectiviy.  But, now on average I get 2 bars, and sometimes 3.  I haven't noticed an extreme change or any change at all, but I don't have any connectivity tools to find out technically so.

Any advice?

Performance Monitor Bug
I can't use the Resource monitor. This is build 7048. Is this a known bug? I can't find anything about it. Do any of you have this problem? It just keeps coming back until I close Resource monitor. Thanks for any info.

I mean the Resource Monitor. Also....it worked at first....I assume it's just a bug because it's a beta.

Get More Performance From Your Hard Drives
If you think that switching to the high performance power plan is enough to set your computer to the best plan, well, it isnt.

Heres how to set your hard drives so they are included in the high performance:

1. open control panel

2. type power in the search bar and click "change power-saving settings"

3. to the right of the plan name click "change plan settings"

4. Click "change advanced power settings"

5. Go to the hard disk section and then "turn off hard disk after"

6. Enter 0 (zero) in the box (this will change to never)

Doing this prevents your disks from being "turned off".

Boot Performance Monitoring
I have been having a problem with running the Windows Experience Index.  On looking into this I have noticed that an error and a warning is being logged in the operational diagnostic perforamance log each time Windows starts up.

The error is related to boot performance and the warning with shutdown performance.  Does anybody have an idea what might be casuing this?

Slow Network Performance
I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (retail) on an ASUS AMD motherboard (AN8-SLI) with nForce4 Gb Ethernet built-in - a clean Windows 7 load (not an upgrade). I am using Samba file shares on Ubuntu and Buffalo HomeStation, and file transfer is now 1/10 the speed when this PC was running XP - getting around 350KB/s.

At first I thought it might be a problem with SMB and non-Windows servers, so I tried the same transfer over http: I setup the Windows 7 PC as a web server and used a browser to download the file on the Ubuntu box - some improvement - around 450KB/s, but I attribute that to the protocol change and nowheres near what is expected (should get up to 3MB/s).

Networking in Task Manager shows 1Gbps link with utilitzation around 1% while copying over http and 0.5% using a file share.I am using the latest NVidia drivers (15.51) for the nForce ethernet, but the speed option under Advanced only shows up to 100Mb full duplex, so I left it at autonegotiate.

The switch indicates it's running at 1Gbps and so does the Task Manager, but it's behaving like it only running at 100Mbps - I'm beginning to suspect the driver is guilty, especially with the 10x loss of speed. I used to copy 25GB in 2 hours, now it takes around 20 hours.

USB Performance Sucks
Had the hope that upgrading to windows 7 would cure the performance problems of USB under windows vista, i'm sorry to say they are the same.

Copying 2.5 GB from a 45Mb/s compact flash drive takes about 5 hours and stalls completely sometimes.

This was the same under vista.
Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

When I swap harddisks with one which contains XP and ubuntu there is absolutely no problem and copy just is fast and does not stall.

What is causing this under vista and windows 7?

What's Up With The Performance Monitor ?
why did M$ wreck the performance monitor? i can't get to view the monitor because it's stuck in a directory (c:perflogs) that i don't have permission to access. what a crock.

unless someone can point out something i'm doing wrong. but i added counters, only to see that it's output was something in that perflogs directory.

and bill, what kinda drugs were you taking when you made windows 7? because never in my whole entire life did i ever have so many directories on my computer that i can't access. what on God's green earth were you THINKing?

W7 64 Boot Performance Errors
I've recently clean-installed W7-64-bit on a Dell Precision 390 dual 6700 and am experiencing slow boot problems. It can take up to 3 minutes before the system is fully usable. I have searched , but cannot see a message on the forum that quite reflects my problem.

The Event Viewer Diagnostic-Performance displayed a Boot Performance Event ID 100 message which ranges from Critical to Error, with boot durations lasting some 104705 ms. I have disabled Kaspersky AV, and virtually stripped the system back down to no more than the OS, but still receive these warning.

Can any one please advise me how to start analyzing where to go from here.

2.9gb Or 4gb Performance
My computer is a dual cpu system with ecc memory, two sticks of 2 gb each. Win7(64bit) only reads 2.9 gb's and in the performance monitor; it shows that 1.1 gb's of it is hardware reserved. I did a little research and found out that I have to make my bios remap around holes to see the rest of the ram.  When I do that  my system gets horribly slower than it was before; games take forever to load, they are horribly laggy, and I can barely do anything in them.

Even the chess game that comes with the OS is lagging when I try to just move a piece. even switching from window to window is slow and can lock-up my system for about 20 seconds. So I set it back to not go around the memory holes, so I have only 2.9gb's of ram again, and now everything is fast, games are fast, the computer is fast. everything is good again. But still, the question remains, why is it that when I use all of my ram, the computer is way slower than when I use only some of it?

Performance Slow Network
I have searched through some of the threads and there seems to be an issue with the realtek drivers, but I am wondering if anyone has any other ideas.

I am currently running build 7237 and everything runs great except if I copy something across my network. I have attached a picture that shows my network utilization spiking up to almost 99% when just coping files from one computer to the other. This only happens under 7, not on xp or vista.

I have tried playing around with adapter settings, etc but nothing seems to help. My motherboard is a Gigabyte with the built in 8168/8111 nic card. Connecting to a Linksys WRT54GL router. I have checked gigabytes site and they don't have any new drivers for 7 yet.

Anyone have any idea's I could try?

Performance Index Dropped
I have a Toshiba Satellite A300M00 Notebook and got it about a year ago with Vista Home Premium. I purchased the new Windows 7 Home Premium (Full) and did a clean instal.

Now they issues is this. When i was running windows vista my WEI (windows Experience Index) was at an overall 5.0 (knowing that vista's max is 5.9, my laptop was pretty powerful and ran games and other things beautifully).

So knowing that Windows 7 is supposed to increase computer performance, the opposite has actually happened on my system (both by looking at the WEI which is now 3.8 and the performance itself with games in particular being much slower).

I was wondering why this may be the case, i have installed all driver related to the graphics card which is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650 512MB Ram. My CUP is 2.5Ghz Dual core, i have 4GB Ram and a 400GB Harddrive.

The windows experience index is as follows. Processor went from about 5.4 to 3.8, RAM went from 5.0 to 4.0, Graphics stayed about the same at 5.2, gaming performance went from 5.5 to 6.1 and HDD went from about 5.2 to 4.9.

The lowest of those being the Processor is the subscore and not only is this rating system different but the performance is actually worse with games, Far Cry 2 i use to be able to run 1,024 x 768 with 2XAA at Very High Graphics nicely (just as an example).

So anyone with any answers would be awesome.

Poor Performance On Good Hardware -- Why?
I have Windows 7 (x64) build 7264 installed and encrypted on a 32GB SSD.

(I also have a 1TB drive for storage.)

I installed it about a week ago and lately it has been becoming sluggish and unresponsive at times. Mostly when loading webpages with lots of pictures or videos. I've tried 3 different browsers with the same result. When watching streaming video, it freezes randomly for a few seconds at a time when playing (but the video play bar shows that it's loaded way past the point where it freezes). I don't think it's my internet connection, because it's pretty fast (university) and I don't have these problems in ubuntu. Also, iTunes sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to gain window focus when I click on it.

I'm having trouble pinpointing where the problem lies. It's obviously not the memory. The processor does't seem to be under a heavy load (and it has 4 cores). Could it be the SSD somehow? It is one of the cheaper ones. My ubuntu installation is on the regular hd and works fine.

USB Hub Affecting Performance
OK, so I have a usb hub (with about 6 different gadgets attatched to it) that is plugged into my laptop at almost all times because I basically use it as a desktop. One time I needed to take the laptop out to do something, so I unplugged everything and opened up the laptop. I had installed something that needed me to reboot, so I did, and the reboot was almost 50% faster, if not more! Would you know why that is? Also, Windows 7 seems to boot up slower then Vista with the usb hub plugged in, but much faster when it isn't.$0
