Ghosting To Different Hardware

May 8, 2012

In the past I have used ghost to clone XP PCs but it only really worked if all of the target PCs were the same hardware as the source. So basically if you had 3 different models of PCs - you needed 3 different source images.I was talking to another tech, and he tells me that this is no longer the case; that you can create a single source image and client will work regardless of what hardware it is.

Ghosting OEM Machines - Possible?

Nov 17, 2011

I have used ghost before to image XP PCs over the network, but have yet to try either Windows 7 or an OEM Operating System (xp was an enterprise license).

My Qs: Is it legit to ghost OEM PCs? I have 60+ new PCs, with OEM Windows 7. I was thinking that I could take one PC, set it up the software etc then push the image. I would then change the license key to the one on the box.

Is this correct? If all the systems are the same, do I need to sysprep? I have heard horror stories of system preping Windows 7 -

Shadow Or Ghosting On Desktop From Previous Window / Pop-up?

Oct 20, 2012

New install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.What causes ghosting or shadowing from a previous window on the desktop or next window you have on top?As we were setting up the wireless connection a pop-up from the network icon in the lower right taskbar area seemed to ghost or shadow on the next window that came to the top and even the desktop. It did not go away till the PC was restarted. This was a Windows 7 pop-up, not a software popup.

Dual Booting / System Ghosting Question

Sep 28, 2009

My main desktop is a Windows 7 installation but my partner still works from a laptop with XP installed.

She has a port replicator connected to my monitor and both our computers feed into it.

I was wondering if this scenario is possible;

Create a disc image of her system and install it on a new drive within my tower. (this will also have the added bonus of convincing her that we need a new bigger monitor!! )

Dual boot Windows 7 and XP.

Curveball;

Is there a way to allow her laptop to ghost the main install so that all files are synced or alternatively allow a ghosting of the whole installation?

The motivation behind this is that should she need to go away - always has a day or so notice, she can just pick up her laptop and know that when she opens it up she will just be able to carry on.

Curveball 2;

The laptop is a dell, so will all the drivers and bloatware that is on her install cause issues if the disc image is installed onto a desktop?

(before anyone asks, I have a retail XP licence which I will rely on for EULA etc.)
