Extended Monitor From Laptop Doesn't Default Laptop When Unlocked

I have my HP 8530 docked on an HP docking station which has an external monitor connected to it. I extended my desktop between the 2 and made the external monitor the primary display. When i un-dock the laptop it does not auto change this and make the laptop screen the default again so all i can see is the extended portion of the laptop. Is this a feature or a glitch?

Where's The Extended Multi Monitor Support ?
I thought Windows 7 was supposed to have improved support for multi-monitor. OK, it's nice that each monitor can have it's own Cleartype and colour settings, but what about wallpaper and the taskbar.

Tiled wallpapers always start from the primary monitor - not the left most monitor. As a result, it's impossible to have a panaorama image stretch across the desktop all the way from left to right, unless you have the primary monitor as left-most.

The Taskbar only appears on the primary monitor.

The new Snap options for positioning windows just don't work very well with multi-monitor. There seems to be no way of setting up a half-screen view if it isn't at the extreme left/right edge of the whole space. It'd be really nice to be able to (say) drag to a corner and have a half-screen view on that monitor.

Laptop Battery Monitor
I have a new HP Compaq laptop and the battery meter is in % which really doesn't tell me much. So I am looking for a battery meter that tells me how much time I have on battery power. I have looked at a few sidebar gadgets and couldn't find anything and Google really isn't helping me either so I thought I would ask here after 2 weeks of research and coming up empty like my battery.

Laptop External Monitor Issue
I recently got a 24" 1920 x 1080 external LCD monitor for my laptop. It's awesome. I've been using laptops only for many years and now I'm very sorry I waited so long before getting one. But, on to my issue:

I want to only use the external monitor and keep the laptop screen turned off. The problem is that when I resume from sleep sometimes, but not always, the laptop display comes back on showing only the desktop wallpaper. So I then have to hit the windows key plus "p" (for projector) and select projector to get the laptop display turned off again.

I know how to select the external monitor in Windows 7. Basically, one goes to screen resolution from the desktop right click context menu and make the proper selection under multiple monitors (see screenshot below).

But windows 7 seems to forget this setting sometimes and it's a mild annoyance to have to check the laptop monitor and if it's on, hit the windows key plus "p" each time (or almost each time).

So I'm wondering if there's some way to force windows 7 to remember to use only the external monitor and keep the laptop monitor off until I tell it otherwise? I suppose this issue is likely due to some bug in one of my drivers but I am using all the latest drivers.

SSD Laptop Drives 'slower Than Hard Disks'
Being a laptop owner i was not happy to read this SSD laptop drives ‘slower than hard disks’

But are 40% more expensive

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are becoming a more frequent storage component in laptops, and are promoted as being faster and more energy-efficient than traditional spinning hard drives. But tests prove that such drives are actually slower than standard laptop hard disks.

Laptop No Longer Allows 1680*1050 On External Monitor
I have an eeepc 1000he with a viewsonic 22inch screen VX2255wmb. I have been using both for a while now with the dual screen setup without any problem. Since a couple days now, my external monitor won't show the optimal resolution which is 1600*1050. In the screen resolution set up page in windows 7,

it used to highlight the optimal ones that respected the aspect ratio of the screen but now it just shows all of them and when I set it up at 1600*1050, I get an error message on the external monitor saying that the configuration I chose is out of range. Now the highest resolution I can use is 1400*1050.

I dual boot with windows xp and I don't have this problem with it. I didnt use any driver for both Os, just plugged the monitor in and it worked.

Anyone has an idea?

Can't Connect Laptop To Tv
I have an HP Pavilion on which I've recently installed Win7 (it came with Vista). I would like to hook it up to my tv but can't get it to recognize that another device is hooked up.

I have a plain old standard def tv with rca plugs on the front and there is an s-video connection on the laptop. I bought an s-video to rca cable (it also has an audio jack that will plug into the headphone jack on the laptop). I've hooked everything up & pressed the "Detect" button but get a message that nothing is detected. Is there some setting that I'm missing or software/driver that I need to download to get this to work?

Laptop Won't Shut Down
running win7/64 here, problem is when shutting down Windows, the OS seems to perfectly shut down, but the laptop keeps being powered on, fan is working, power button is on, must press it a few seconds to turn off the system completely. It doesn't happen all the time. I use to dual-boot with Linux (not the case anymore, so the issue is not there), and it never happened when shutting down from Linux, but often from Windows, which makes me think that it's not a hardware issue. I chose this section to post because i can't think of any other one.

I got this problem too of being very often temporarily logged in to a temporary profile, may be the two issues are related. And no, my profile is not corrupted, creating a new one, as I already posted here in another thread, leads to the issue coming back soon or later. May be the profile is not properly unloaded, and may be this causes the issue too when shutting down the system, any clue?

ps: no problem when rebooting.

Laptop Won't Sleep
Today, I installed Home Premium 32 bit (it's dual booting with Win 2K Pro) on a Dell Latitude C640. After much patience, googling and having a driver disc for this laptop, I finally finished the install. For a 2002 model laptop, it looks pretty good. The only known problem that I'm having is that it won't go into sleep mode. All of the other options are there except that. Windows 7 will install on almost anything there is, it looks like. Anyone have a suggestion for the sleep mode problem?

Monitor Doesn't Come Back From Sleep State
I went to sleep last night with the computer on (Windows 7 7077) like always and this morning it's still on but none of the usb devices are working, monitor doesn't come back from sleep state but the fans on all the components are still spinning. I tried hard rebooting 3-4 times and still nothing. I let it sit and cool off for a bit and still nothing. Anyone know what the problem could be?

I was thinking it was the motherboard but then wouldn't the ethernet light be off if the board wasn't working? The only thing on the computer the has been overclocked is the CPU which I took from 3.0ghz to 3.8ghz and it's been running fine on the stock cooler for the past 6 months almost and then bam it's like this. I don't think it could of been over heating as the temps usually run 30C at idle and 50-60C at full load and the side is off of it.

Can't Get Laptop And Netbook Linked Via Homegroup
Have one laptop running Windows 7 Build 7100.

And a netbook also running Windows 7 Build 7100.

On the laptop I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

On the netbook I am running Avira anti-virus (although this problem existed when there was no anti-virus program installed).

I created a homegroup on the laptop and shared all folders.

I then joined this homegroup from the netbook (and shared all folders there too).

So under homegroup on either machine, I now see the other computer's name.

If I click on that name it brings up the libraries- documents, music, pictures, videos.

But if I click on any of them, nothing happens. If I right click, then properties it says 'the properties for this item are not available'.

Something seems to be preventing the machines from sharing these files properly.

I have tried looking in Kaspersky but can't see what might be 'untrusted' that I should mark 'trusted'.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Homegroup was the main reason I installed Windows 7 on the netbook!

Laptop Can't Find Desktop Computer - Both Win7

When I type in computer name, it tells me that it can't locate that computer.

So I can't print from my laptop, because the printer is attached to the desktop. I've tried everything I can think of -- renaming networks, etc. -- nothing has worked. The weird thing is that the laptop could find the printer last week, and I don't remember changing anything. Advice???

Laptop Screen Goes Black And Won't Respond
I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 on my HP Pavilion dv5-1000us laptop, and now sometimes when I leave the computer on (and plugged in) after some time (usually around ten minutes or so) the screen goes black even though the keyboard lights are on, and the computer will not respond to any keystroke. I have to reboot.

Also, when I close the lid (still plugged in) sometimes, although it is supposed to hibernate it does not, and the same black screen/lighted keyboard problem occurs, and again I have to reboot. Neither of these problems occurs in a predictable manner.

I looked at similar questions on the web and in other forums but I don't see the answer. One other person's similar problem involved an ATI driver, but my computer uses a Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset Express Chipset Family; I checked for driver updates but seem to have the latest driver already installed.

Dell M1330 Laptop Won't Hibernate
I have a Dell XPS M1330, Windows 7 64bit RC1, and have never been able to hibernate it. It sleeps fine, but when I press the hibernate button, the screen fades out, turns off momentarily, then comes back to the desktop. If I have "require password on wakeup" turned on, it will come back to the locked login screen.

The drivers are up to date on windows update. I have tried every combination in the "Advanced Power Settings" window, I have tried powercfg -h off and on, and setting size to 100% but nothing helped.

I'm going to be traveling soon, and having the hibernate option would help a great deal. Can anyone help?

Laptop Won't Wake From Sleep Mode
I have a Toshiba Satellite P205 and prior to installing Windows 7 I was running Vista.  I've had it set up to go to sleep when I close the lid and this has never been an issue.  I installed 7 and now when I open the computer after it's been in sleep mode,  the blue light on the front indicates that it's awake, but the screen is blank.  I move a finger across the touchpad and this does nothing, I press buttons on the keyboard and this does nothing.  The only way I found to resolve this is to hold the power button until the computer shuts down and then  wait a minute or 2, then hit it again to get it to start up.

Before I installed the beta I did a Windows update and checked to make sure that I had the latest drivers.  Any ideas or suggests as to what the problem is and how to solve it?

Hibernate Won't Completely Shut Down Laptop
Ok so when I had XP I would always use hibernate and only about once a week I would actually reboot the computer completely. Now that I have Windows 7 I would like to do the same. But now when I click hibernate the screen goes black and everything shuts off but the computer acts like its in standby. The lights are still on and computer is running.

Once this happens I cannot get back into windows or reboot without holding down the power button to force a reset. Each time that I have done with Windows 7 boots an error saying the computer was not shutdown correctly. Anyone know why it won't completely power off when I click hibernate. I have tried it about 5 separate times and it has not worked once.
