Does Win 7 Rc Support FTP ?

I installed IIS management tools, created and configured (fairly certain) an ftp share.

I've enabled permissions from the Windows firewall to incoming and outgoing FTP resources. I configured my linksys WRT610N for FTP access (Already worked with 2003 server), but cannot gain access from outside my network.

I can share files internally, but have not tried to TELNET in or out of the Windows 7 pc. I couldn't find much on technet regarding FTP setup on Windows 7 - any thoughts?

FTP Program In XP Virtual PC
I'm running the RC of Windows 7 and I installed the virtual pc to run XP.  I installed an FTP program on the XP virtual PC, but I can't get it to work right.  The application loads just fine, but it doesn't seem to be able to connect to the internet. Any attempt to connect to any server fails. However, IE can connect to the internet.  I turned off my firewall but that doesn't seem to help.  Any ideas what could be causing this?

FTP Servers Via Explorer
Several FTP servers, previously accessible via XP/Vista Windows Explorer, cannot be invoked similarly in W7, though they can be accessed with an FTP client or a browser.

The message states that "You may not have permission, Handle is invalid."

As a test, one of these server entries was deleted, then recreated via MAP NETWORK DRIVES|CONNECT TO A WEBSITE. No success.

What needs to be tweaked to make these sites again clickable from the Windows Explorer interface?

FTP Via Explorer Does Not Work
I decided to check out and see if the FTP feature was improved or anything in Windows 7 - it doens't seem to be but it doesn't seem to work either. I tried logging onto my FTP server, it kept giving me a permission error (cannot access the folder), then I tried logging on anonymously and received the same error.Anyone else get this to work?

Windows Firewall And IE Or Firefox FTP
Does anyone know how to configure the built-in firewall to allow IE and Firefox for Passive Outbound FTP access Port 21?

Currently, all Outbound without rules are set to Deny. Current rules for IE/Firefox set to Allow/TCP 80 and 443/Any IP.

Cannot seem to get the Elevated Command Prompt with the "netsh advfirewall firewall" commands to allow FTP access for IE and Firefox to work.

FTP Server Firewall Glitch
I've installed IIS and the FTP feature on a Windows 7 computer, and configured a default FTP site on it.With that minimal configuration, trying to connect into it from an FTP client on Windows Server 2008 R2 is failing. The Windows 7 firewall seems to be blocking the incoming connection.  I turned on all 3 Windows Firewall with Advanced Security rules, which should enable the connection.  Still no luck.I disabled the inbound rules entirely, and the connection worked!  So it seems that the Win7 firewall rules aren't adequate to allow Windows' own FTP client to connect?

I re-enabled the firewall, and created my own inbound rule that enables port 21 from any IP, and that worked! The only difference I can see between my rule and the default rule 'FTP Server (FTP Traffic-In)' is that the built in rule is tied to the execution of SVCHOST.EXE, and specifically, the use of the Microsoft FTP Service (FTPSVC).

I used a net stop FTPSVC and net start FTPSVC to verify that there is a running service with that name (although I don't know where it appears in the Services window). Why do the default Windows 7 firewall rules fail to allow a Windows FTP client to connect to the Windows FTP server? UPDATE: I tried it in reverse order - Windows 7 FTP Client, Windows Server 2008 R2 FTP Server - Same results.

Mapping A FTP Server As A Local Drive
I have a big problem, I was using NetDrive to map my FTP Server to my computer for some time now. I was using Windows Vista 32-Bit, I just installed Windows 7 64-Bit. Now to a surprise I found out that NetDrive doesn't support 64-Bit Operating Systems as of this time. I have been searching no-stop for about 2 hours and haven't found much.

I found some posts that recommended another FREE program to use that is like NetDrive but they still doesn't support 64-Bit. I don't want to buy a $50.00 program like WebDrive for example. I have also tried to use windows explorer to connect to the FTP Server and doesn't seem to work well (mostly not at all). I don't know why?

So at this point I am asking everyone if someone knows of a FREE program or method that I can use to connect my FTP Server to a local drive on my computer?

Create New Network Connection To FTP Client
Has anyone ever tried to change from XP to Vista, and create a new network connection to an FTP client? the "My Network" menu option has disapeared in both Vista and Win 7. The most logical choice therefore would be to look under Network for a menu option to do this. Nope.... Not there either.

I found out how to do it. It may be easy, but not if you cannot find it. Users should not have to search that hard to find an answer.

To help users, is there any plan to restore a menu option to do that under Networking?

How about putting Networking back under the Start Menu?

Win7 Firewall Wont Allow SSH Or FTP
I've got an issue that's been driving me crazy. I've installed MobaSSH and the windows firewall absolutely refuses to let it through. I've taken down the firewall and everything works fine, so I know its the firewall. Same problem with a Serv-u FTP server but I'm not as worried about that as I am the SSH server. MobaSSH adds itself as a service, so while it was running I found the process and made sure that it was added to the firewall, I can find nothing else to add to exceptions.

I haven't found much in terms of firewalls for Windows 7, so I would prefer to get this to work instead of switching firewalls, but if someone can recommend a good one thats fine too.

Ftp: Download Folders Http: Directory Via Program
My FTP allows me to access folders as a standard http directory.

I can download files from there. But, obviously I can't directory just download a folder.

Is there any way to download full folders from a http directory similar to a FTP program lets you do this with folders in a FTP?

FTP's transfer rate is a lot slower.

Can I do this using SmartFTP?

BUGS: Border Padding, Changing Drive Letter, IE FTP
Windows Border:

I'm using the nice glass interface, when I set my window Border Padding to over 15 then maximizing the window no longer takes into account the start menu and they maximize behind the start bar.

It takes the sum of the Active Window Border + Border Padding to be over 15 before this happens. The result is the same if my Task Bar is left aligned or Top aligned. Why would I want a thick border? It looks great.

Changing Drive Letter:

When changing the drive letter using compmgmt on a drive which has my user shell profile folders (My Documents, Desktop, My Music...), windows starts giving a 'server' error because the shell folder's are still pointing to the old location. It would be nice if before the drive letter change is committed, a check is done on the shell folders to give the user the option to change them also to the new drive letter.

IE FTP:

Everyone has this same prob. The explorer style ftp view doesn't let you upload files: (I'm using ie x64)

" An error occurred opening the folder of the FTP Server. Make sure you have permission to access this folder. Details: The handle is invalid. "

For this one, just don't use that feature of the ie

Win 7 Does Not Support New PC Games
Question about PC games. Shall Windows 7 support also PC games that have meant to work with Windows XP and Vista?

There is obviously support for the games.

Or is it only that Windows doesn't support yet fully 64 bit platforms?

For example HP Pavillion dv6000 with AMD 64 AthlonX2 doesn't work with Games that have been made for Windows Vista.

Why Does Win 7 Not Support 1900x1200 On Laptops ?
I am trying to figure out why Vista and Win7 do not support 1900x1200 on any of my laptops. I am currently testing on 2 HP systems that are capable of 1900x1200 screens. When I had XP Pro installed I was able to enjoy 1900x1200.

When I moved to Vista and Win7 the best resolution I am able to achieve is 1680x1050 on system 1 and 1024x768 on system 2.

Seems a bit odd that both Vista and Win7 can not support the resolution on either system yet XP can.

Multi Language Support In Win 7
I'm planning to buy a new PC with Windows 7 (English) and not sure what version I should buy. I need to be able to switch into Japanese language mode for writing Word documents and composing/reading email sometimes. I do not need the desktop, menus etc. to be displayed in Japanese, however. I've found some info on the Internet and MS web site but still confused:

1) I have read that LIPs can be installed on any version of Win 7 but looks like Japanese must be installed as a full install (no parent language). If this is the case, can I setup 2 user accounts and configure one for English and the other for Japanese?

2) Do I need to have Win 7 Ultimate or Enterprise edition to do what I want to do?

Does Win 7 Ultimate Edition Support Both 32 And 64 ?
I would like to ask this straightforward question: does Windows 7 Ultimate Edition support both 32 and 64 bits? I have a legal copy of it and installed it on my Vista Business PC, but it seems to be running at 32 bits only. Is it because of this Vista only supporting 32 bits? How do you tell the bits your OS is running at?

Does Win 7 Support Symbolic Links ?
I'm researching an issue in which Windows 7, Vista, and Windows 2008 Server cannot delete user profiles host on an EMC SAN (The error says that I require permission from the user, even if I AM the user).  XP and 2003 Server do not have this issue and can delete the same files without any problems.

During my research I've been looking into some of the new features introduced in Vista and up that may be responsible for this issue.  I'm away of UAC and have tried all settings related to that without success.  I also see that support for Windows Symbolic Links was introduced with Vista (see link) however I can't find out if Windows 7 also supports it.  Does anyone know?

Win 7 - Support For Legacy Hardware
Buy new hardware is not an option.

ALL Windows OS prior to Vista contained support for Legacy hardware devices. The drivers for these devices would load just fine and run as designed. Then along comes Vista and no more support for Legacy hardware.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but Windows XP required less HD space than Windows 7, but XP offered more support for ALL hardware and drivers, while Windows 7 doesn’t allow any legacy support?

Now Windows 7 is touted as being the “End-All-Be-All of OS's. I smell Vista in a new package, with no support for legacy hardware.

Why is that? Does Microsoft really think that we should scrap the devices that we have and buy new hardware just because we need to in order to run an inferior OS? Linux doesn't seem to have an issue with legacy hardware in their newest releases, nor does Apple.

I will not throw away thousands of dollars of hardware just because Microsoft will not support it. My Dell GX270 test platform worked just fine with Windows XP Pro. The hardware did it's job very well.

Sorry Microsoft, I am not going to replace all of our systems just because you are too lazy to allow support for legacy hardware. I guess that I am stuck with XP Pro until Microsoft stops supporting it, or comes up with a real live working OS. If I must, I will transition all of the systems to Linux and Microsoft can die a slow painful death.

Gee, you would have thought that Microsoft may have learned a lesson with the Vista failure. I guess that the developers at Microsoft have forgotten that WE, the consumer put them where they are at today. Continuation of FAILING to support WE, the consumer will only lead you to continued failure in the marketplace.

Win 7 Support Of Dynamic Disks
I understand there will be a preorder of Windows 7 comming out, but I haven't found informaiton on which version(s) will support Dynamic disks?

Background:  I had Vista 64 Home Premium and installed Windows 7 (now RC) after adding two 1.5 TB drives which I wanted to run stipped.  I couldn't get Dynamic disk to function in Home Prenium and from what I read on the web, I needed Ultamate.  Windows 7 was available and worked.

The public betas are only Ultimate, so it's dificlut to determine what functionality is lost on other versions.  I haven't found a detailed feature list that indicates which versions will support Dynamic disks (Supersite for Windows, searching Microsoft forums).

Win 7 Support For Seagate Disk
In Windows 7 RTM I have had trouble with one of my two HDs, a Seagate 300 GB. During Windows 7 installation, installer "could not find drivers" when the Seagate was the first SATA drive. Once the Western Digital drive was set as the first drive, system installed ok.

After installation, the Seagate shows in the Disk Management as 300 GB, but if look at contents with Explorer, it has only 125 GB capacity. Can this be a Seagate firmware problem? (Windows 7 RC earlier had no problems with this drive when the system had Win7RC + Vista + XP.)
