Difference Between System Image, System Reset And Backup
Can some one tell me what the differences are between system image, system restore and system backup.
Also I made a system image and stored the file on an external drive and can't find the image file. Can someone tell me how I can find the file - did a search and organized the drive by date and could not find the file.

System Image Backup
I recently purchased a new computer (Dell XPS8000 running Windows 7). I backed up my files and created a systems image onto an external 1tb hard drive. When I review "System Space" on the Backup and Restore Window, the systems image has consumed 103gb of the hard drive. Realizing that much depends on the systems loaded on the PC, is that a reasonable amount of space, or is it excessive? My program files on the PC are 2.86gb, the Microsoft file is 15.75gb, and I have 77gb of images stored on the desktop.  The total amount of memory on the PC shows 800gb of 916gb available (total memory if 1tb).

Backup Of System Image
I perform an incremental back-up every day using the built-in backup program. How often would you do a whole system image? I was thinking of only doing that every few months or less. Each image would be 80GB.

How To Delete System Image Backup ?
In preparation for installing Win7 RC, I'm trying to free up disk space on a external USB drive to do a backup using Windows Easy Transfer. I've gone into the "Manage Windows Backup disk space" dialog, and I've deleted all of the "Data file backups" and the "System image". However, the dialog still reports that a system image is still using up 32GB. I've only used this external drive on this one PC, and I can't figure out how to delete this 32GB system image. This external drive is not bootable, I don't need the backups on this drive, and I can't find out where the system image is stored on this drive. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this hidden system image backup? I need the space. (and, yes, windirstat does report that there is 32.8GB in "unknown".)

Questions About Using System Image In Backup
I have a couple of questions relating to the system recovery of a Windows 7 machine. First I should say I have experiance of using ASR backup on XP and 2003 machines but have had very little to do with Vista and 2008 machines so I suspect things have changed somewhat now I have got to Windows 7. Firstly could someone confirm that the ASR backup method has now totally gone from Windows 7? And presumably the nearest thing to this is the creating a system image in backup? Anyway I have had a go with the system image method today and have one question. My original intention was to send the image to DVD(s). I was warned that I would need around 13GB to store the image and inserted my first DVD into the burner. Anyway the image was getting sent to the DVD and I presumed I would be prompted to insert a second, third DVD etc. However I got the message "The media in the drive has too little space". Should I ge this message, surely I should get prompted to insert the next blank DVD?

Create System Image After Each Backup
When I use Win 7 backup, it gives me the option each time I create a backup to create a system image. I created a system image on a CD a couple of days ago. Why does it ask me if I want to create another each time I do the backup? Is it talking about creating one on my hard drive, not a CD? If it's just my hard drive then perhaps I should create one each time, but creating one on a CD is onerous. Plus, if this is the case, (that it wants me to create a CD) I don't know how that's to be done if the backup is on a schedule in the middle of the night.

Iso Backup SYSTEM IMAGE
Did a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit and all my apps, deleted Windows.old, defrag'ed and activated. Then created a SYSTEM IMAGE using Win 7 BACKUP and RESTORE, so far so good. Win 7 and my apps take up 43.9 GB on the hard drive but the SYSTEM IMAGE it created on my external drive is only 23.7 GB. Tried it on my laptop with similar results ISO was about half the HDD. Does that sound right? Just seems the ISO should have matched the HDD GB-wise unless it compresses or something.

Backup / System Image Problem
I'm trying to make a system image and configure backups but I'm unable to select the internal drive that has the space I need. I have a 1Tb drive portioned into C: [Windows 7] and D: [Data] and a 750Gb drive [H:] that used to have XP on it that I want to put my backups on. I used to dual boot XP and Windows 7. Computer Management > Disk Management shows C: Healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dumo, Primary Partition) D: Healthy (Primary Partition) H: Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) System Imaging/Backup help says you can't backup to the system (startup) drive (not sure why?) Is there any way to change which drive is designated as the system drive? I've removed the dual boot and used bcdedit on C: to only reference itself What's else do I need to do to make C: the system drive?

System Image Backup Missing
I have run the "create system image" successfully until today. I have an external HD for that image file. It appears to run, goes through the steps and says it has created the image. But when I go to the external HD and click on the Image file that was created there is nothing there. It shows 0. What could I have done to do this. I even looked for that image file on my C: drive, just in case, but it is not there either.

Backup Utility: System Image Cannot Be Saved
I get the error "a system image cannot be saved on a drive that your computer boots from or that windows is installed on", when i try to use my D (physical array) drive for a target location.. I cant figure out why this might be.. i've taken a look at the files on there and dont see any that could be causing this message.. Anyone have any thoughts?

Windows 7 System Image Backup Failure
I have a new PC with Windows 7 on it (<1 month old) and have just got around to setting up the backups. The system image backup fails with an error message 'The backup application could not start due to an internal error; The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424)'.I ran the sfc system file scan which said 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them'. The CBS log file is over 4 Meg and difficult to make sense of.Any ideas?

System Image Backup Folder Size Problem
I have a question about System Image Backups. (Win 7 Ultimate, 64-bit). I have setup System Image Backups to my external 1TB eSATA drive. I have chosen to allow Windows to manage the space used for backup history, Windows says it will use up to 279GB (which is fine). The properties on the actual "Windows Image Backup" folder on the external drive shows the size as 32.6GB. However The Windows backup menu "Manage Windows Backup disk space" shows "System Image: 68.90 GB." Primary Question: Is Windows Backup storing my system images somewhere else in addition to this folder, or is the menu just plain wrong? Additional Question: Is the Windows Backup utility capable of doing differential backups for the system image, or is each backup a full backup? The GUI menus are not giving me enough information. Based on what I see, it looks like System Image backups are always full, and data files are incremental or differential.

System Image Backup Patriot USB Flash Drive
I have a 32 GB Patriot Xporter USB Flash Drive. It is recognized and usable by Win7RC for all applications, formatted either FAT or NFTS. It is even recognized when I boot from the System Restore DVD. However, the system image utility tells me that it is not an acceptable device on which to place a system image. Why not?

Backup System Image Is Created From Wrong Partition In Dual Boot
I have a dual boot win7RC x64 and vistax32 ultimate. The vista32 partition is on the primary drive and is the first partition. Win7 is on a partition on a secondary drive. When booted to Win7 the vista partition is visible as G: by activating it though the disk manager tool. When I try to create a system image with Win7 backup (both RC and Beta) the backup app states that it's trying to create a system image of (G:). It gets to 57% and doesn't complete. This seems to be a consistent problem with backup app. Anyone else have this? Solutions?

I'm using the RC of the Windows Automated Installation Toolkit for Windows 7.I'm following the instructions to build an answer file for an unattended installtion.These are the instructions: On your technician computer, insert the Windows 7 product DVD. What Is A System Image ?
I'm confused by the backup options. Â With Vista, I could backup my entire C: drive, which included the system by doing a "Complete PC Backup." Â With 7, I can make a "System Image" and/or backup the C: drive. Â I chose both, and I ended up with 2 vhd files, one that appears to be a complete copy of C:, and the other is labeled "System Reserved", is only 40 gb, and when mounted contains no files. Â Is the "System Reserved" vhd the "System Image", what is it good for, and doesn't a complete backup of C: make it unecessary?

Choosing Drives In System Image
I'd like to know if there is anyway to force how windows 7 chooses the drives that are used to create a system image. For some reason my D: drive is now being selected and there is no OS installed on this drive, just some user folders along with a lot of data. Yet for some reason the system image utility wants to include this entire drive in the backup. How can I prevent this drive from being selected, the option is greyed out when running the backup utility.

Restoring System Image To A Different Harddrive
I backed up my windows system disk using the build in "create system image". Now my system harddrive is failing so I need to restore my backup to a different harddrive, I figured something this basic would be handled easily by the Windows 7 system restore, but I guess I was wrong, it refuses to restore the image to any other harddrive except the failing one. Is it really true that the image can only be restored to a hdd that is exactly the same size as the original was or the same hdd? Is there anyway to skip the disk check? Just for record my new harddrive is twice the size of the original and the backup image is only 10GB so it cannot be because of lack of space. What's the point of making a system image if you can't even use it when your harddrive fails? Are there any other tools that can be used to restore the image created by Windows 7?
