Unable To Start Most Programs From Taskbar And Start Menu?
Jul 1, 2012When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

Jan 25, 2012I unfortunately used Perfect Uninstaller to remove SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2010. After reading the forum I know it was a mistake to use this as it probably infected me.I used Avast to locate the viruses on my HD and then removed them with their program.So, then I tried to re install the SQL Server and it installs successfully but when you go to the start menu, then click to expand the folder it says (empty) under the folderI also re installed Visual Studio 2010 which also completed successfully and when you click on that folder in the start menu, there are items there but they are shortcuts that look like documents (have the document icon), and you cant launch Visual Studio.I so do not want to reformat my hard drive for this to work.
I also ran the unhidefolders.exe from this site but it did not correct the problem.
Any one have any ideas how to fix this? These are the only two programs that are like this on my start menu, the others are fine and work correctly.

Sep 17, 2011Keyboard shortcuts are very important to my computer use, which brings up a small but annoying problem I've been having in Windows 7. In XP I was able to place a shortcut to a program or even to a particular file on my Start Menu. If I then renamed the shortcut on the start menu with a unique initial character, I could start a program or access a particular file simply by hitting the Start key and then an initial. For example, for my most common Microsoft Word file, I need only hit Start and then the letter x, and up pops my most commonly used file. In Windows 7 when I try this I am delayed while Windows performs some sort of search for items starting with an x.
In a moment or two, it discovers there is only one such item, and it offers me this item in a list and I must hit enter to get the item to come up. The negative effect of this is still more pronounced when I start a new session and I know how want to open say three separate files/applications. In XP I can do this very quickly if the names I gave the shortcuts are unique. (And even if I have multiple items, say starting with the letter m, the Start men lets me essentially choose which m item I want by repeatedly hitting m. Very quickly, I learn that such and such file is: Start>mm>enter.) Is there a way to tell the Windows 7 Start Menu to behave like the XP Start Menu, at least in this regard?
No Icons Or Start Menu On Start Up?
Mar 1, 2011I have an Acer Aspire M5811 running Windows 7 - 64 bit. When I tried to start my pc tonight I ended up with just the desktop wallpaper with no icons or start menu.
I tried to reboot in safe mode but the pc became unresponsive. I also tried using the system restore disc but again nothing.

Dec 26, 2012This morning I powered the computer following the Christmas break (Windows 7 64 bit). The screen displayed the backgorund colour only, not a black screen. There was no desktop, icons or start menu. The keyboard did not function; could not start Task Manager. Pressed the Windows key + f5; no response. Pointer shows and moves with mouse but no mouse functionality.
I rebooted in safe mode and the system was restored with limited Safe Mode functionality. I ran ESET virus scan; no viruses found. I rebooted; no change. I attempted to do a System Restore to earlier this morning prior to a Windows update install dated 2012-12-26: 729 EST. No change. I attempted to restore to an earlier restore point last week; no change. I am currently running CHKDSK /R in order to verify that there are no disk problems. I have all data files backed up but do not have a disk image.
I cannot download TSG SysInfo until I get the desktop back.
Windows 7 - Cannot Open Start Menu Or Any Downloads
Sep 19, 2011I cannot open the start menu or open any downloads. When I click on any of these the screen flashes blue then goes away. At times it flashs and opens a little window and ask me to type in the folder name where I want to put the download. I cannot open system restore until I go through the help menu and it gives me the link. I can open the icons on the desktop. I use Internet Explorer for my browser but, it does this no matter which browser I use. I have Windows 7 64 bit Dell Inspiron.

May 20, 2011I recently purchased a used computer, running Win 7 Pro, that was configured with a display language of Spanish (Mexico was the set location). I changed all of the display and language settings and restarted, but annoyingly, the title of the Guest account is still in Spanish, as are many of the Programs and files within folders in the Start menu (CD Burner XP, Intel ProSet Wireless, etc.) How do I finish configuring the computer so that everything is in English?

Jan 29, 2012I just built my own PC (specs can be listed if requested). I just installed Windows 7 Professional and I seem to be uncovering more and more small errors/issues everytime I turn around. Here's a small list of some of the issues I've found thus far.
1.) No matter what folder I am in (or even on the desktop), when I try to create a new folder by right clicking and going to "New", it does not work. The next extension menu just says "Empty".
2.) My Start menu does not have any recently used programs on it and also does not maintain any item that I pin to it. Currently there exists only one item on it (internet explorer). Even when I remove that from the start menu and replace it with something/anything else (say Firefox), if I power down the system anything that was pinned there is removed and Internet Explorer returns (just IE, the rest of the menu for recently used/pinned programs is blank).
3.) When I open Firefox it asks me if I want to make it my default browser. I click yes, update my homepage, etc. When I open it again, it acts like I have never opened it before and asks again. The same happens for internet explorer. This happens everytime I shut down or restart my settings.. it's as if they aren't being saved and the computer thinks I haven't used them before.
4.) Windows hangs and random times doing random tasks.. or so it seems. I was downloading a file and it "hung". It didn't purely hang and make it so that I couldn't do anything at all. Mouse is still active, I can Alt+Ctrl+Delete, etc, but nothing can be ended and no windows disappear. Eventually the screen changes appearance to something comparable to setting the opacity to 50%. At this point I must hard reset and the system forces a disk check (which always turns out fine) upon restart.
That's just a short list of a few of the issues I've had so far. I thought maybe I could just try to re-update windows by going back to my earliest restore, however, it listed my earliest restore as being fairly recent and upon doing so yielded the same issues. I'm not sure if anyone knows if there is a way to set windows back to the original conditions that existed immediately upon installation, but if that is possible and someone could explain how to do it, I would like to give that a shot. Windows also only is listing 5 restore points. I would expect there to have been many more given the number of updates I have done today (since I just installed it earlier), is there a way to see more of these so I could go back even earlier? I saw a check box that said "Show additional restore points" or something along those lines, however, when clicked, no additional points were listed.I'm not sure what I did, but it isn't pretty and I would love if someone had an alternative to reformatting all of my harddrives and resinstalling windows.

Mar 28, 2011I am having issues with searching for program shortcuts in Windows 7. When I type in a shortcut name in the search field on the start menu, nothing appears. Files and Control panel applets do appear though but no program shortcuts located under the C:ProgramdataMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu folder. The OS is Windows 7 Enterprise RTM 64 bit. I have confirmed that the user that is having the issue does have read and execute rights to these shortcuts because they appear in the start menu and in the appropriate folder. This is in a corporate environment so the local hard disk has restricted settings on it via group policy.
They include the following:
- Hide these specified drives in My Computer Restrict C drive Only
- Prevent access to drives from My Computer Restrict C Drive Only.
The tasks I have done.
- Confirmed the index options settings and the start menu is listed.
- Rebuilt the index and the same issue applies
Access My Advanced Boot Menu To Start Windows Normally?
Jun 9, 2011Everytime I restart the computer it boots into a repair mode,attempts to repair my computer, and then tells me "startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically". Why it's doing this I don't know,the system was working fine an hour ago.The only change I made was to attempt to make my RAID work, I rebooted, entered BIOS and changed my "Sata Operation Mode" to "RAID",then the problems started happening. I tried turning it back, even resetting BIOS defaults, but no go. During the boot up though I turned my comp off during the middle of windows loading, I wonder if that could have caused the problem?I know it's not recommended but it's something I've always done and never had a problem with.I've been trying to access my Advanced boot menu to start windows normally(perhaps it's stuck in some kind of repair cycle?) but pressing f8 does nothing, I've tried a thousand times.
I put in my Windows 7 disk and attempted a repair through there which halfway worked. When I boot up now it gives me two OS options to choose from, Windows and Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered).The latter one boots up windows fine but all of my files are gone and it's telling me my copy of windows is not genuine! I had the majority of my data so it's not a huge deal to do a clean install but I would like to avoid that if possible.I'm using an asrock 890fx mobo with AMD processor.

Dec 9, 2011On not so infrequent occasion, my Start Menu and Desktop, without warning, will suddenly experience the equivalent of an epileptic seizure.The Start Menu will start flickering really fast and windows will be slightly moved, resized or closedhe episode will occur for maybe 10 - 20 seconds and then the fireworks stopAfterwards, the fallout may result in some applications/windows that still remain open, they may (but not always) no longer respond to mouse clicks.o be honest, I'm having difficulty figuring out what triggers this event. The best I can gather it happens when I move the mouse (nearby?) to click the Start Menu, but am not absolutely sure. It does not always happen and when it does, it occurs super fast and I lose complete control until this wacky (and very disruptive) behavior stops.I searched google and could not find this problem documented. I am using Window 7 Ultimate, 32 bit, with the latest updates. My computer is a Dell Dimension 8300 (old), which means I am using a generic settings which include the mouse driver and video display (no Aero). May 15, 2012my Windows 7 machine is acting strangely, here are my symptoms:personalization missing from login box desktop icons have no text beneath them, some apps won't start text in menus has disappeared dialog boxes have no text can't access start menu, therefore unable to run cmd as admin screenshot similar to mine except my start menu doesn't come up I've run sfc /scannow, it says no problems found.I do have Vista on a separate partition that I can boot from. Desktop Icons/start Menu Disappears On Hp Windows 7?
Jan 19, 2012My desktop icons disappear on my new hp. If I leave the screen up for various amounts of time, the start menu and desktop icons disappear and my wallpaper is the only thing i see on my screen. It will not give me the chance to alt cntrl delete, I can right click but it only gives me the breifcase options. I was on the phone with hp,. they remotely accessed, saw nothing wrong. I took back the other computer, and now my new one is doing the same thing. I hate to turn off the computer by pushing the button, especially when Im trying to keep my new computer working properly. Has anyone had this issue? Can I changed a setting? Obviously it happened on the same type of computer twice.
