Compatibility Mode Crashes Every Program
I have a BIG problem in every program that i have set compatibility mode on it crashes the program and says (program name) has stopped working.

XP Mode - What Is Running In Background When Application Is Run In Compatibility Mode ?
When i install XP Mode, and then using GUI i will install application for example: VMware infrastructure client. Then i got shortcut to it. When i run that app which components of XP are running in the background? Is it "full" XP? If i wont run any app using XP mode, are services running in the background? How much RAM does these processed consume? Is there running a copy of XP in the background? Shall i install there Antivir software top be protected or when app using XP Mode do not access vulnarable areas?

XP Mode Freezes / Crashes Host
I'm running the RTM of W7 Ent on a Dell D531 (AMD proc). Windows 7 runs great, installed VitualPC and XP mode. All bios hardware virtualization settings are on. XP mode start preping the machince and about a percent or 2 into the setup the host reboots. No errors in the system logs... nothing, just a reboot.I've uninstalled, reinstalled several times with the same result. Also copied a working VPC 2007 VM hard drive running XP and the same issue occurs. Gets to the XP logo with bar moving across the bottom, couple seconds, and boom a reboot of the host.After the initial reboot, another attempt either causes a reboot or freezes the entire host forcing a power down.Looking for help here... I wouldn't expect a RC to crash the host regardless.

Explorer Crashes Loading Update Program
I've run into an issue loading Windows Update that causes Explorer to crash everytime. A few days ago I tried installing a third-party Media Center plugin but the installer crashed... nothing surprising there except for when I tried to run Windows Update soon after, it failed to load and crashed Explorer. Fiddled around for a while and couldn't figure anything out, so I reverted to a Restore Point which fixed everything. Tonight I tried to install Silverlight (downloaded from Silverlight website) and nearly the same thing happened. This time the Silverlight installer loaded, I click 'Install Now', but the box disappeared and never installed. Then I remembered Windows Update had the Silverlight 'optional update' in queue, so I tried to open up Windows Update only to get the same Explorer crash. To eliminate the obvious, restarting does not fix it. Virus scan is completely clean. CHKDSK finds no hard drive errors. Etc. Compatibility Mode And Windows XP Mode
Is "Run this program in compatibility mode for: [Windows XP (SErvice Pack 3]" option (Ultimate RC 64-bit beta) in the properties box for an exe file the same thing as "Windows XP Mode" described in the Windows 7 features web page? If you don't pre-order Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate, you don't get this compatibility mode option to install software? Microsoft describes Windows XP Mode as a business software feature, but does not mention games or the difference between these two features if they are not the same feature. XP Compatibility Mode
I am currently running two XP applications in Vista Home Premium using XP compatibility mode. I have the same two applications also running in Windows 7 RC Ultimate. I've just been looking at a table giving a comparison of features in the various editions of Windows 7. This appears to show that XP mode is only included in the Professional and Ultimate editions, not in the Home Premium edition. Does this mean that the XP compatibility mode feature which is in Vista Home Premium and apparently in Windows 7 RC will not be included in the RTM version of Windows 7 Home Premium? Or is there some confusion here between XP compatibility mode and XP virtualisation.

Is Possible To Use XP Drivers In Compatibility Mode ?
I own a Epson stylus 600 printer. And although it is recognized in Windows 7 Beta and RC1, it does not works. Epson never released XP or Vista drivers, but they worked in XP because drivers where included on the windows installation CD (don't remember about vista, I uninstalled Vista, because it is such a disgusting OS) So, if want to know (if possible) how to extract the XP/Vista drivers from the CD , and use it in Windows 7 64 bit RC1.

Compatibility Mode: Do You Need To Reboot ?
I had tryed to get counter strike working properly (was stuck at start screen) by changing settings in compatibility tab. Nothing was working and I gave up. Then I tried the next day and it magically worked ! so yeah I'm kind of a noub and was just wondering if you need to reboot to 'apply' the settings?

It seems that, since the announcement of XP virtualization, the answer to many questions is to install in XP mode, or even Vista compatibility, as a solution for manufacturers who have not, or are not planning to, update their drivers.Is this the beginning of a trend, and an excuse for companies to not enhance or revise their drivers? And, while it may be a short term solution, does it allow the manufacturer to simply ignore a driver update or rewrite? And, while XP mode or Vista compatibility may be that short term solution that is needed for aging hardware and applications, it is not without its faults. So, when a driver or application fails [periodically] in XP mode or Vista compatibility, and even causes crashes, whose problem will it be: the user for not purchasing a newer supported product, the manufacturer for not updating their product, or Microsoft for not having a "perfect, fault free" virtual mode or compatibility mode?I can already see some manufacturers that will benefit from this "reprieve" of not having to update their software and driver suites [namely HP].So, is this solution really a mistake and a can of worms in the long run?Commentary and opinion provided by Doc.

Question About XP Compatibility Mode
I'm looking for a more technical answer on something here: when you set an application to run in "Windows XP (SP3)" compatibility mode (by right-clicking on the executable -> properties -> compatibility) what exactly is happening in the OS ? I mean from the application point of view, what does the application see different between running in native Windows 7 mode and in XP compatibility mode ? What exactly does the OS "sets up" for the application when you choose to run it in XP compatibility mode ? I bumped into this question when reading about the new desktop virtualization technology in Windows 7 (which lets you have a XP virtual machine running) because I fail to see the difference between using this new technology to run an application in XP mode AND using the "old" XP compatibility feature that I mentioned in my above paragraph to run the same application. Can anyone enlight me about this or point me to some technical documentation explaining this?

Compatibility Mode Does Not Work
I downloaded the driver for Canon Canoscan 3200F scanner. I get an error message that says the driver are for 32 bit only, and the install program shuts down. This one incompatibility is reason enough for me to stay with XP or go to Linux since it's foolish and borders on incredulity that I need to buy new hardware because neither Canon nr Microsoft really care. I can rebuild a 1913 Ford Model T with new parts, or repair a 1995 CRT TV but I can't get my 21st century hardware to work. Now what?

Errors When Using Compatibility Mode To Install
I'm trying to install a web based application that we use to program some equipment we sell. The program is called eManager and is by Toshiba, it's used for programming their PABX. It worked under Vista and XP, you need to install IIS and SNMP. I have installed every option under IIS and SNMP. The installer detects that I am running an unsupported version of Windows and bombs out. When I enable compatibility mode for XP (SP2 or SP3) the error I get is "Windows cannot find 'C:WindowsSystem32Sysocmgr.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." If I set compatibility mode to Vista SP2 then the error is "The specified Windows component could not be found: IIS-WebServerRole;IIS-FTPPublishingService;IIS-FTPServer;IIS-FTPManagement" Any help in resolving this would be appreciated. And before anyone suggests XP Mode, I have a Dell D531 and there is another forum thread that talks about how Virtual PC won't run on this machine because of an error in the current firmware from Dell... I've also tried Vista x32 SP2 in a VMWare machine but it has trouble using the hosts (my laptop) modem for dialup access to systems I want to program. I'm running Windows 7 for Partners x64.

Compatibility Mode For Printer Drivers
I've disposed of all of my HP printers because HP support has gotten so bad. Refusing to offer drivers for a printer that is over 5 years old, when that printer cost more the three thousand dollars was the final straw. Now, I'd like to update all of my machines to Windows 7 ( I love it) but the new Epson Professional wide format printer I have does not have a working Vista x64 driver. The compatibility mode in Windows 7 works great for applications, but I'm not having much success with printer drivers. I'm hoping that Epson will step up and produce the proper drivers, but until then I've had to keep a machine running WinXP just so that I could use that printer. This one sells for more the six thousand, and I can't afford to replace it. Am I going to have to resort to a VM?

Attach A Printer On XP Compatibility Mode
I have an NEC Superscript 870 that does not have Windows 7 drivers. Is it at all possible to run a printer in WXP compatibility mode as we can run programs in WXP compatibility mode??? Sure would not only save a few (very dear) dollars, but also prevent idiotic waste of a perfectly good asset (where is all of their "think green" money where their mouths are???). I am intentionally not upgrading one computer to Windows 7 just so I can copy docs over to the WXP computer and bring them up on it so I can print them.

Remove Win 7 Compatibility Mode
I have been trying to get Itunes or any IPOD software to work and recognize my IPOD. I even tried Windows XP SP2/SP3 compatibility and even though it says connected on my IPOD it will NOT show up in ITUNES. I upgraded to the lastest RC 7100 and it kept the compatibility settings. When I run the program it pops up telling me to REMOVE the compatibility mode. When I RIGHT CLICK and goto properties/compatibility EVERYTHING is unchecked. I have tried running with admin priveledges, unchecking everything.. for some reason it won't remove the compatibility. If i uninstall and RE-install it RE-applies the compatibility mode. Not sure how to remove it...

What Determines Compatibility Mode Operation ?
We are a Certified ISV Partner selling a 100% .NET Application developed in Studio 2005. It only requires .NET 2.0.The install, using InstallShield Pro's latest version, requires that the application is installed in compatibility mode. I can understand this, as InstallShield is not supporting Win 7 yet. However, running our application (which talks to SQL Server) is requiring compatibility mode. This seems strange since we are using the Microsoft tools, .NET, etc.Operationally, there are no issues with Win 7 that we know of and we have no issues with Vista. Here are some questions:1. What determines how Win 7 determines if compatibility mode is needed?2. What support is available to ISV Partners? (labs, etc.)3. Do we have to be developing and compiling in VS 2008 to avoid compatibility mode?

ITunes Issue Compatibility Mode
I have had a number of freeze and lockup issues running iTunes 8.02.20. One of the attempted fixes was to run iTunes in Compatibility Mode. It did not fix the problem and I eventually resolved the issue by following one of the recommendations in this Forum (renaming iTunes folders, etc.). However, I have not been able to run iTunes in any other mode but Compatibilty Mode. Each time I run the application I receive a notification that iTunes has been set to run in compatibility mode. I have unchecked (checked and unchecked again) the mode in the properties section of iTunes.exe but without success. I have not seen this issue raised here (or in Windows Vista Forums). Any ideas?Â

Compatibility Solutions - Zinstall Vs XP Mode
I'm looking for a way to run XP legacy apps in Windows 7, apps like IE6-based CMS (proprietary) and ACDSee, for a network I manage in a medium-sized design/print shop (among others). After some research, I'm now down to using either Microsoft XP Mode or Zinstall XP7 . The Zinstall thing seems like XP Mode, but integrated and also migrates the apps from XP by itself, not just a blank Windows. The XP Mode is from MS and is free with Windows 7 Ultimate, which is great. However, totally unavailable without VT or on lesser Win flavors? What are the pros and cons of each?

I recently installed a program in the XP mode on a Windows 7 PC and can only access the program as the user that installed the program. I need to allow all users to access the program shortcut, and have the shared the program and the virtual PC library but cant locate the program to add in the library.

I've got Virtual PC/Windows XP installed and working, but when I install a program in Windows XP mode and create a shortcut in the "All Users" folder I don't see it in the Windows 7 start menu, as a matter of fact I don't even have the "Virtual Windows XP Applications" folder in the Win 7 start menu.

Any Way To Run Outlook 2007 In XP Compatibility Mode?
I am using Outlook 2007 on Windows 7 RC1 (7100) with Franklin Covey PlanPLus for Outlook v.6 add-on. This add-ob really gets slow at times. I asked tehir support, they said windows 7 is not supported (ah, that was easy to forsee). Before I try the thing on XP - I want to try running Outlook in XP Compatibility Mode. When I try this Outlook starts, but cannot find my profile (or any profiles whatsoever). Ok, windows 7 keeps Outlook data differently from Win XP. But how can I create a profile for XP compatibility mode? The craziest thing is run a control panel which creates profiels in XP Compatibility mode, or reinstall outlook (or start it with some command-line switch to pretend that it runs the very first time and force it to craete a profile while running in XP Compatibility mode?) Anybody? Any ideas?
