Choosing A Preferred Network: LAN Vs Wireless

I've set up Sync/Offline files successfully on my laptop.  The problem is when my laptop is docked, and has both LAN and wireless connections, the network chooses the wireless connection over the LAN (which obviously is much faster).  Is there a way to make the LAN the preferred network?  When I try disabling the wireless, sync does not work as it appears to be linked in some way to the wireless network.

Unexpected Error When Creating Wireless LAN
When I'm trying to use the "Manually connect to a wireless network"-function, I always encounter the text "Unexpected error", which just gets displayed after I entered the network information (SSID, Security and stuff) and clicked next.

I'm using the x64 version.

Is there any workaround known?

Atheros AR5007 Wireless Lan Drivers
I have an issue with Atheros AR5007 wireless lan card drivers.  My laptop is 2 months old: Compaq CQ60-210US with built it wireless.  Came with Vista Premium.  Everything worked.  I upgraded it with 32bit Win 7.  Most things worked.  The Wireless light would stay yellow indicating there was NOT a wireless connection, but I could connect using IE.  When connected, the light turns blue.

There are posts on this site saying to download the XP, not the Vista drivers from HP and install those to fix the light issue.  The wireless card is Atheros AR5007EG.  When I go to the HP website for this model, there are Vista wireless drivers listed but none for XP.  The original driver used was a Microsoft driver.  It worked other than the light issue.

The HP site lists the drivers as Broadcom Wireless LAN drivers for Vista. I downloaded these and tried to install them.  Nothing ever happened.  This is a single .exe file. When I tried to install and double clicked, it just goes off into space.  Never comes back and says the drivers are installed.  Now the networking is down and I can't get it back up.  Went to uninstall programs in Control Panel and tried to uninstall everything dealing with wireless.  When the system reboots it reinstalls the "latest" drivers, but still doesn't work.

Tried to install using the compatibility options listed in the post I found on this site. Same thing.  Never installs.

Tried to install by updating the driver and manually pointing the update to the Vista driver .inf file.  Same thing.

HP Wireless Assistant asks what wireless router I'm using [Netopia 3347] and tells me that router is not supported.

Went to Device Manager and uninstalled all network adapters.  Same thing.  On reboot, installs the latest drivers and will not connect to my wireless router.

The HP site appears not to contain any Atheros drivers, only Broadcom.

When I try to find my network, I get my neighbors listed but nothing that is my network.  I don't broadcast the ssid.

I updated the auto connect list with my network name.  Nothing. Can't find it.

Oddly enough, I just had a flash while writing this.  The wireless light on the laptop is actually a switch.  You can turn the wireless off on an airplane by just pressing the light button.  I never considered it might be in an off position because it always shows yellow.  I pushed it and the HP Assistant came up and said the wireless was on.  I can now connect to the net. Yeah!  But the light issue still remains, which was the original problem.  Its still yellow when the network is active, and should be blue.

I went back to one of the posts and downloaded Atheros AR5007EG drives for XP from the listed site in CZ.  Installed those.  Same issue, the light is still yellow, not blue, but I can at least connect to the wireless router.  Oddly, the installed drivers are listed in device manager as AR5006.

I'm still asking for any insight into the whole broadcom/Atheros which driver to use to get this to work right issue. It would appear everyone else fixed it in Feb except me.

Win7 Can't See RT2400 Wireless LAN Card
I'm trying out Windows 7 RC (build 7100) 64 bit and i have problems with my lan card. When I was using Windows 7 beta (build 7000) 32 bit I never encountered such a problem. Windows simply doesn't see this card. Without it I can't connect to the Internet thus simply makeing whole Win7 useless. Drivers are pretty old (2003-10-08) but, as I mentioned, worked propertly on build 7000. What might be wrong? My specs: Pentium Q8200, P5KPL/1600, GTX 260.

Driver For Ralink Wireless LAN Card On HP Pavilion M9350F
For some reason, Windows 7 does not find any adapters on my computer. I have heard that Netgear does not support Windows 7 yet, (Aren't vista drivers supposed to work on Windows 7 anyway? I have a WPN111 adapter) so I'm using a built in pci-e Ralink for my adapter that came with my comp. I downloaded the most recent driver for it off of HP's site, but when I install it on Windows 7, it comes out saying that my system does not meet the miniumum requirements.

Driver For INPROCOMM IPN 2200 Wireless LAN Adapter
I have just installed Windows 7 RC on a Toshiba Satellite Pro L10 Laptop.

Broadly speaking it works except that the Wireless LAN Adapter doesn't work.

The device is reported (by Linux) as an [Air Conn] INPROCOMMIPN 2200 Wireless LAN Adapter (rev 01) (Probably from Linksys/Cisco?).

Does anyone have any idea where / how I could get a suitable driver? I have downloaded the XP & Vista32 drivers and they don't appear to work. Incidentally, I have had Windows XP Home working on this laptop.

Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG LAN Driver Does Not Work
I've installed a Windows 7 Beta few months ago in my laptop. My WLAN worked properly.

Now I have downloaded Windows 7 RC and successfully installed. However, my WLAN doesn't work this time.

It's the same driver and I've tried to use "Windows XP SP2" compatible mode to install it, still failed.

My WLAN is either Intel® Pro/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b+g) or Intel® Pro/Wireless 2915BG (802.11a+b+g).

Does anyone can help me about this?

LAN On Public Network
My LAN (local area connection) is automatically on a Public network, I'm not sure why or if its always been like this. My Broadband is on home. I cant change the LAN to home. A message popped up and said something along the lines of "this network has too many internet connections".

I'm wondering what it means if my unidentified network is public and if there is anyway to change it to home?

Enter Network Password In LAN
i've just reinstalled XP on my internet routing computer (i have dsl usb modem that's routed towards my laptop through a LAN card) and when i try to access the desktop resources i get an ënter network password" message. The shared drive is for everyone, i've even tried with firewall down, the laptop's Windows 7 that tries to access it sees it as a home network, all rights are allowed, file sharing services are on and all passwords are off.

This never happened before using this combination of Windows 7/XP, but something similar happened a while back using Win 7/7 with a different behaviour.

The Aspire is the name of the laptop. Domains are turned off on both computers and they're in the same network. help?

Change Network Location For LAN?
I currently have my Xbox 360 connected up to my Laptop via Ethernet and I am having a problem with streaming videos and music. Everything else works fine, it connects to Xbox Live etc, and connects to the Laptop and finds the video files, it just won't play them. It gives the error:

'The connection to your computer was lost. Make sure your computer is turned on, connected to the network, and running media sharing software.

Status Code: 53-C00DF238'

I can't find much information about this error apart from one person stating that the ethernet connection to their Xbox had made itself public rather than private and could fix it by changing it to private again.

This is where I'm having a problem. The connection is showing up as an unidentified network with no internet access and as a public network. I can't figure out how to change it to a private network, there just doesn't seem to be an option.

Everything else on the laptop is working fine, my firewall is configured correctly, media player 12 is sharing correctly, the homegroup is set up etc. It just won't stream the video and the only thing I can think of now is that it needs to be a private network in order to allow streaming. I just can't change it.

I have attached a screenshot of my network & sharing centre to show you how it won't let me change the network location type.

A Preferred Method Of Uploading/Posting Screen Shots
The method used by most to upload screen shots and pictures is saving it in .jpeg/jpg/jpe format and by using the Snipping Tool and the Attachments (paperclip) at the top of the Reply Box.

If you do not know about the Snipping Tool, please read this Tutorial on it.

How to use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums

To start, use the Snipping Tool or whatever screenshot program you prefer and save it as a .jpeg/jpg/jpe.

When you are ready to include a screen shot in your thread/post, click on the paperclip in the reply box, where it will go to the Manage Attachments page.

From there, click on the browse button to open up the File Upload window.

Insert you image and click on The Upload button to the right.

You can also upload the file from a url.

Now, close the Attachment window at the top right.

You can now reclick on your paperclip..

and pick the file to insert into your post.

Not Connecting To Preferred Networks Configured Via Group Policy
I have  Windows 7 installed on a Dell Latitude D830 system. Our Active Directory pushes two preferred wireless network configurations to laptops, both SSIDs are hidden/not broadcasted. Our group policy does not allow re-ordering, configuring, etc. of those preferred wireless network configurations.

Our specific location no longer uses the first (in order within Manage Wireless Networks) wireless network connection, only the second WLAN connection. For Windows XP systems, they successfully auto connect (bypassing the first and connecting to the second). However, our test Windows 7 systems are not auto connecting to the second WLAN connection (they do not bypass the first to connect to the second).

Windows 7 test systems can use the Dell Wireless LAN Utility to switch to the second WLAN connection, manually. This is not ideal, we want this automated like our Windows XP systems.

What could be causing this behavior? I am not aware of a Group Policy, reg key, or any other setting in Windows 7 that would make these test systems behave differently than Windows XP system.

Network Sharing / Homegroup On Private LAN
I have searched but not found much with what I want to set up. I currently have a wireless connection to the internet for my PC and Laptop. What I would like to do is setup a private LAN with an old router to use but be able to keep the desktop connected to both WiFi and this LAN.

The only way I have managed to do so so far is by manually setting the IP address for the LAN (disable DHCP, change IP address etc) and assigning the LAN IP address manually to my desktop/laptop, leaving the gateway fields blank. I have noticed that doing this makes my network "Unknown" to Windows 7, which then forces it into Public mode, and disables Homegroup.

Is there a way for me to accomplish what I want?

Is pretty much how I want it to work. The desktop has two NICs, the laptop does not, so I realize the laptop would be a one-or-the-other scenario.

LAN Connects To Unidentified Network On Startup
I'm running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit on an ASUS laptop with a Realtek PCIe Gigabit Ethernet LAN. Every time I restart my computer the LAN connects to "linksys10" (the router it I want it to connect to) AND "Unidentified network". Both connections say Internet access, however I cannot get on-line until I go to the adapter settings>disable the LAN>then enable it again, then it connects only to the "linksys10" network and the Internet works fine.

The router I am connecting to is a Linksys WRT54GS (security disabled, SSID hidden). I have tried power cycling the router too.

It's very annoying to have to disable and enable the LAN device upon every startup. I tried uninstalling the device, then rebooting and have windows install the driver again for me. This did not work.

Then I downloaded the updated driver for windows 7 from the Realtek website, installed it, reboot my system, but I still have the same problem. I have no idea why it's connecting to two networks on startup.

LAN Overload Causes Network Adapter Driver Crash
I've been having a pretty annoying problem lately. My setup is based on two computers, one server and one gaming rig. I've mapped all the disks from the server over to my gaming rig so that I can access my files easily over the LAN. This has been working perfectly for quite some time, but recently I've gotten pretty major problems with it.

This is what happens: When I transfer a lot of files over the LAN, either it can from the gaming rig -> server, or just using the interface to transfer something between the disks on the server (from my gaming PC) eventually everything will crash. Streaming video, music or other stuff works perfectly, but when I start trasfering like 50gb between the disks the network-adapter driver on the gaming rig crashes. The server maintains in perfect condition.

And when the driver crashes the gaming rig the explorer.exe process freeze and I can't shut the computer down, and it forces me to hit the power-switch. However once I've rebooted everything is back to normal. I've looked around in the even viewer which is where I found what I think is the source of the problem.

Here is a screenshot of the messages I'm getting once the driver goes boom:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v373/murfh/yukonw7.png?t=1262447496

I haven't found any other events that are related to this matter (stuff that happens at the same time... etc etc). Note: It does not matter whether I transfer stuff around on the server or from my gaming rig --> server. I this the fact that I've mapped the drives through my gaming rig, and controls them from there is the source here.

If I transfer files from the interface on the server (through remote desktop etc.) everything goes like it should. What have I tried to fix this? I've reinstalled the network driver several times and goggled a lot, but I've yet to find a working solution.

Additional information: Processor: Core2 Quad CPU Q9450 @ 3.6GHz (4 CPUs), Memory: 8192MB RAM Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 + ATI Radeon x1550 Monitor: 40"+26"+24" Sound Card: Creative SB X-Fi Platinum Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit RC Motherboard: Asus Maximus Formula Computer Case: Lian Li P80

Note: I've never had this problems like this before, and W7 worked perfectly for almost half a year with the same hardware that I'm running now without any problems what so ever. I thereby hope some of you might have some input on this, because I'm making me go insane at the moment.

Win7 Network With Games (LAN) Not Working
Windows 7 Network With Games (LAN) Not working

In windows 7, You can create network connections to connect to the Internet, I have one of these, Then I have a Hamachi connection and my normal Local Area Connection.

When I disconnect hamachi and my Internet, I can host and play games in Warcraft 3, but as soon as i connect to the Internet, I have to run the game through hamachi in order to be able to see or host game in warcraft that others can join. This is only with warcraft.

Most other games I tried playing over a Local network just doesn't work. Tiberium wars for one. It runs fine, single player and on-line. Demigod as well. Worked 100% On windows Vista, but no luck yet on windows 7.

Yes, All the correct ports are linked to the games in the firewall as far as I'm able to check. It took me a while to figure out how the firewall works, but its correctly done. All the games are allowed in the firewall and the ports they normally use allowed with them. Even tried disabling windows firewall.

Also tried making my Local Area Connection the primary connection, but the Internet connections does not show up in the list when you go to: start/control panel / network and sharing center / change adapter settings / [Press ALT] Advanced / Advanced Settings / Adapters & Bindings. (Which is what people recommended I change when playing over hamachi to make hamachi the main adapter in Windows Vista so i thought i'd try it with windows 7 to make my local network my default connection)

I also tried running my Internet connection from my router and just normally connecting through lan with NO other network interfaces on. Games still won't pick up the other players or hosts.

Extra note on Tiberium Wars: In the network settings you can select which IP it should run on. Hamachi, LAN or Internet connection, Even selecting it there on LAN didn't help.

Tried this on 2 PCs both running windows 7, and another running windows Vista. Nothing worked.

Removed all software network relating from ym pc including hamachi VPN software, no luck. Games still only work over Internet and cannot see LAN games. I know from experience with windows vista, that there is some setting somewhere I probably need to change or something, but I have gone through the firewall (even disabled it) and the network and sharing center. no luck so far.

Nvidia / NForce LAN Issues - Network Unavailable After A Cold Boot
Is anyone else seeing a problem with their Nvidia NForce Mobo LAN when the machine is either booted from cold or rebooted and windows starts up but the network is unavailable.   The problem is intermittent, but I can't quite find any pattern to the problem.  I had the same problem occasionally with Windows Vista x64 and I was hoping the problem would be resolved in Windows 7 but alas it’s just happened in Windows 7 x64 for the first time today.

Now unlike in Windows Vista, I’ve not installed the Nvidia drivers, its just the drivers that ship in the box with Windows 7.  In Windows Vista if I got the issue I could occasionally disable the device from Device Manager, then re-enable it, however sometimes disabling the device would just hang the Device Manager window, so it was pot luck.  I’ve not tried working round the issue like this in Windows 7 yet, but a reboot usually fixed the problem.

My current mobo is Gigabyte m750sli-ds4 (rev1), however I did also see the problem on my ABIT AN9 32X SLI so it not specifically this hardware and feels more like a software issue?

Does anyone have any answers on this particular issue and/or some fix?

Choosing Drives In System Image
I'd like to know if there is anyway to force how windows 7 chooses the drives that are used to create a system image.  For some reason my D: drive is now being selected and there is no OS installed on this drive, just some user folders along with a lot of data.  Yet for some reason the system image utility wants to include this entire drive in the backup. How can I prevent this drive from being selected, the option is greyed out when running the backup utility.
